Gay male communities have long had unique relations to pornography and the pornographic. From the time of the Physique Pictorial and Tom of Finland to the present age of porn at the click of a mouse, gay men have made choices about the porn they watch. As a result of these choices, porn becomes social in gay spaces, such as bathhouses, sex clubs, bars and discos. However, porn use and consumption in the gay home can also be highly social and communicative. In this article I engage anthropological methodologies in order to understand how a specific group of men engaging in online hook-up cultures communicate by and through the display of gay pornographic films within the space of the home. The data collected suggest that pornography is enmeshed within communicative systems that include commodities, bodies and pleasures.

This article addresses the various ideological constructions of the US-Mexican border from the perspective of Latino Men Who Have Sex with Men. These men constructed the border through the assignation of various qualities supposedly inherent in bodies and landscapes. In engaging in these assignations, this article will argue that in fact these men embody ideologies that create the border as not just a mark in the geopolitical landscape but also as a lived and practiced reality. The border is therefore a bodily experience of regimes of power-knowledge-pleasure (Foucault) which allows borderlanders to manipulate these regimes for various reasons including: avoiding social injury; use of specific zones of the body; and engaging in identity transvestism. Overall, this article engages queer theory; borderland theory; and demonstrates the complexity of the border as a lived and embodied phenomenon.

This article explores a specific linguistic intervention ("mild to wild”) that occurs in online communication on gay internet hook up sites. It argues that despite supposed knowledge as to what “mild to wild” means, we must look at this linguistic intervention within specific socio-cultural contexts. Without context, the actual uses and meanings of “mild to wild” might be misunderstood while our knowledge of sexual communities of practice risks falling squarely into stereotypes. For this community of practice, “mild to wild” creates a linguistic opportunity for men interested in having sex with other men to be able to define their desires and further explicate how their sexual interaction will take place while also negotiating expectations and assumptions of male-male sex within increasingly homonormative strictures. Data was gathered from over four years of ethnographic research and is presented from a cultural and anthropological linguistics perspective. The phrase “mild to w...
