I was born and raised in Shanghai, China. I am currently a doctoral student at the University of Vienna, specializing in ancient philosophy. But what happens when φιλοσοφία (philosophia) meets contemporary philosophy and its non-Western counterparts such as Chinese zhexue 哲學? The term encompasses a plethora of conceptions of philosophical practices that vary between East and West cultures.
This edition of the Summer School will provide a platform for participants to explore and learn from the plurality of philosophical subjects, methods, and purposes. In addition, the Summer School will focus on the past and present bridges between ancient and modern/contemporary philosophy, as well as between Western and non-Western philosophical traditions, and on the global lessons about philosophy that can be drawn from these interactions.
The summer school will, in addition, host keynote lectures on Western Philosophy (with a focus on Ancient Greek Philosophy) and Eastern Philosophy (Daoism, Confucianism and Indian Philosophy).

How should we deal with sociopaths? Peimin Ni’s talk on the “Four Dimensions of Mencius’s Theory of Human Nature” is a bold and rigorous attempt at tackling some of the most baffling and hotly debated questions across time and cultures. Focusing on the Mencius (or Mengzi 孟子), and drawing on a host of texts and traditions, Ni unsettles conventional interpretations of a key idea in the Confucian classic, underscoring its multiplicity of meaning and relevance in today’s world. Taking a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, Ni offers his audience a practical and comprehensive guide to Mencian ethics, as well as the opportunity to witness the systematic unraveling of a persistent puzzle: What does it mean to be human?
