Il y a près d’un siècle et demi, Victor Cousin, l’un des principaux défenseurs de la nouvelle discipline qu’était alors l’histoire de la philosophie dans l’université française post-révolutionnaire, a fait, sur la philosophie de la Renaissance, une remarque qui a persisté longtemps et que bien des histoires canoniques de la philosophie reprennent encore aujourd’hui : « L’absence de méthode, tel est le vice fondamental de la philosophie du XVe et XVIe siècle ». Éloignée de l’esprit méthodiquement organisé des philosophes et des théologiens scolastiques et incapable d’aspirer à l’élévation métaphysique de la philosophie de Descartes, la pensée de la Renaissance et ses applications représentent pour Cousin un hiatus déconcertant dans l’histoire par ailleurs continue de la discipline dont lui et ses disciples ont jeté les bases au cours du XIXe siècle.
Par le lancement du projet Philosophie de la Renaissance en ligne (Renaissance Philosophy Online - RPO), nous souhaitons mettre en évidence les continuités et les discontinuités dans le domaine de la philosophie de la Renaissance, sans devoir embrasser les hypothèses et les canons appartenant à des périodes réputées plus philosophiques. Nous explorerons donc la manière dont les philosophes – et les médecins, philologues, praticiens des sciences, éditeurs et artistes – ont tenté d’articuler une nouvelle manière de penser en mesure de comprendre le nouveau monde qui se dessinait à l’époque. Les réunions mensuelles se dérouleront en ligne, afin d’encourager un échange fructueux de pensées et d’expériences entre des chercheurs de lieux et d’horizons divers souhaitant explorer la pensée de la Renaissance. RPO est conçu comme un forum accueillant où échanger des idées, une opportunité de partager nos propres recherches et travaux afin de recevoir des retours et des suggestions, tout en stimulant de nouvelles pistes d’investigation. En outre, notre objectif est de créer un réseau entre les chercheurs qui souhaitent favoriser la coopération universitaire sur la philosophie de la Renaissance. Nous croyons qu’en ouvrant différentes perspectives sur la philosophie de la Renaissance et en acceptant d’étendre le sens du terme ‘philosophie’ à un large éventail de sciences, d’arts et de métiers qu’elle englobait à l’époque, nous pouvons parvenir à une meilleure compréhension d’un tournant fondamental dans l’histoire de la culture, ainsi qu’à une conscience plus profonde de ce que la philosophie pourrait être aujourd’hui.
Chaque réunion sera introduite par un conférencier différent qui présentera ses travaux les plus récents avant d’ouvrir la discussion. Le conférencier nous fournira un résumé qui circulera à l’avance. Les réunions suivront un rythme mensuel, tombant le dernier vendredi du mois.

Dans le but d’impliquer le plus grand nombre de chercheurs possible, nous entendons donner à chacun la liberté de s’exprimer dans la langue de son choix, l’anglais restant la lingua franca de nos échanges.

Nearly a century and a half ago, Victor Cousin, one of the leading advocates of the new discipline of the history of philosophy in post-revolutionary French universities, came up with an unfortunate zinger about Renaissance philosophy that stuck around for a long while and that many canonical histories of philosophy still endorse today: ‘The absence
of method: this is the fundamental vice of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century philosophy’. Distant from the methodically organized mind of scholastic philosophers and theologians as well as unable to aspire to the metaphysical heights of Descartes’s philosophy, Renaissance thinking and its applications looked to Cousin like a perplexing gap in the otherwise continuous history of the discipline to which he and his followers
laid the foundations during the nineteenth century.
By launching Renaissance Philosophy Online (RPO), we would like to highlight continuities and discontinuities within the field of Renaissance philosophy without the need to embrace assumptions and canons that belong to periods that are deemed, allegedly, to be more philosophical. By asking ourselves what’s wrong with doing history of Renaissance philosophy, we will explore the way in which philosophers – and physicians, philologists, science practitioners, editors and artists – tried to articulate a new way of thinking in order to understand the new world that was taking shape at the time. Monthly meetings will be online so as to encourage a fruitful exchange of thoughts and experiences among scholars from different places and backgrounds who like to explore the Renaissance way of thinking. RPO is designed as a welcoming forum where to exchange ideas, an opportunity to share our own research and work in order to receive feedbacks and suggestions, while stimulating new avenues of investigations. Moreover, our aim is to establish a network among scholars who are interested in fostering academic cooperation on Renaissance philosophy. We firmly believe that, by opening different perspectives on Renaissance philosophy and by accepting to extend
the meaning of the term ‘philosophy’ to that wide range of sciences, arts and crafts that coexisted with it at the time, we can reach a better understanding of a fundamental turning point in the history of culture as well as a deeper awareness of what philosophy could be today.

Malgré la grande influence qu’elle a exercée à la fin de la Renaissance, la philosophie de Francesco Patrizi da Cherso (1529-1597) reste mal connue en France. Presque trente ans après l’édition du De spacio physico et mathematico par Hélène Védrine (Paris, Vrin, 1996), la journée d’étude intitulée : « Vetustissima novitas : Philosophie et érudition chez Francesco Patrizi (1529-1597) » réunit à l’Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne un groupe international de chercheurs autour de sa philosophie savante.

Chez Patrizi, la pensée philosophique est une activité indissociable, méthodologiquement et ontologiquement, d’une certaine forme d’érudition historique, et sa pratique polémique de la liberté de philosopher engendre une réflexion explicitement politique sur les effets pratiques et les applications techniques de la pensée.

Son parcours intellectuel s’articule autour de trois grands axes :

Ses travaux philosophiques au sens strict, rédigés en latin, sont focalisés sur la recherche de nouveaux principes explicatifs de l’univers, conduisant à l’élaboration d’une nouvelle métaphysique platonicienne et d’une nouvelle philosophie de la nature (Nova de universis philosophia, Ferrare, 1591).

Patrizi a aussi jeté les bases d’une nouvelle science du langage, exprimée en langue vernaculaire, dans laquelle il approfondit le rapport entre la nature, l’histoire et les différentes formes d’expressions humaines, par l’élaboration de nouvelles théories (artes) de l’histoire (Della historia dieci dialoghi, Venise, 1560), de la rhétorique (Della retorica dieci dialoghi, Venise, 1562) et de la poésie (Della poetica, Ferrare, 1586).

Enfin, il s’est engagé dans l’instauration d’une nouvelle historiographie philosophique, alternative radicale au canon aristotélicien (Discussiones peripateticae, Bâle, 1581), soutenue par l’édition et la traduction latine d’ouvrages visant à constituer un thesaurus de sagesse anti-péripatéticienne : la Théologie du Ps.-Aristote, Proclus et le Ps.-Philopon, et surtout les Oracles chaldaïques et les textes hermétiques, dans un projet de restauration autant que d’« instauration » de la philosophie chaldéenne, hermétique et présocratique qui l’a occupé, des années 1560 à ses dernières œuvres philosophiques, au service de l’établissement d’une nouvelle conception de l’enseignement de la philosophie dans les universités européennes.

On ajoutera sa nouvelle histoire complète de la poésie (dans la Deca historiale de sa Poetica) et ses travaux sur l’histoire de la milice romaine, esquissés dans la Militia romana (Ferrare, 1583) et complétés par les Paralleli militari (Rome, 1594).

On centre ici l’attention sur l’articulation entre le nouveau et l’ancien chez Patrizi, les éléments de continuité et de discontinuité entre l’humaniste et le philosophe, les caractéristiques de sa nouvelle encyclopédie du savoir, enfin, la dimension politique et institutionnelle de sa relecture du passé.
