Dina Dreyfus, televizyon için öğrencilere yönelik pedagojik amaçlı deneysel bir felsefe programı tasarlamış ve 1965-1969 arasında Radio-Télévision scolaire tarafından ortalama 30 dakikalık yaklaşık kırk yayın gerçekleştirilmiştir. En uzun yayın meşhur 29 rue d'Ulm adresinde, 27 Mart 1965'de 5 büyük filozofun katılımıyla gerçekleştirilen, izlemek/okumak üzere olduğunuz "Felsefe ve Hakikat/Doğruluk" başlıklı yayındır. Bu programda Badiou "uzmanlara" soruları yöneten sunucu rolündedir. Temelde iki tez üzerinden hakikatin özü ve felsefenin tanımı tartışılmaktadır. İlki özellikle Hegel üzerine çalışmalarıyla bilinen ve Hegel'in Tinin Fenomenolojisi'ni Fransızcaya çeviren ve bu kitabın oluşum ve  yapısı üzerine çok önemli bir kitabın yazarı olan Jean Hyppolite'in "Felsefede hata yoktur" önermesi, ikincisi ise epistemoloji ve bilim felsefesinde çok önemli bir isim olan ve özellikle "Normal ve Patolojik" çalışmasıyla Foucault üzerinde önemli bir etkisi olan    Canguilhem'in "Felsefi hakikat yoktur önermesidir." Her ikisi de pek çok ünlü Fransız entelektüelinin hocası olmuştur. Bu üç isim dışında tartışmacılar arasında Paul Ricoeur, Michel Foucault ve Dina Dreyfus bulunmaktadır.

Cet article étudie les relations entre le travail de soins et les contraintes temporelles. L’objectif est de comprendre les effets de ces contraintes sur l’activité des soignants. Une recherche-action a été menée durant 18 mois au sein d’un EHPAD (établissement d’hébergement pour personnes âgées dépendantes). Elle s’est intéressée à l’activité de 34 soignants. La méthode a associé observation et entretien. Notre cadre théorique est issu de la clinique du travail et de l’ergonomie. L’analyse de l’activité des soignants montre les effets des contraintes organisationnelles sur l’activité. L’activité des soignants se focalise sur la gestion du temps plutôt que sur les soins. Au final, la qualité du travail est altérée, et le travail perd de son sens en sacrifiant son principal objectif.

This article investigates the relationships between care activity and temporal constrains. The main objective is to understand the constrain effects on care givers activity. It is aimed at understanding the effects of the requirements on care givers activity. A research-action of eighteen month was conducted within a residential establishment for older dependent people and studied the activity of thirty four care givers. Our theoretical frame associates both work clinic and ergonomics. Investigations method combined both observation and interviews. The analysis of the care givers activity shows the effects of the organizational constrains on the activity. The care givers activity focuses on time organization rather than care. Finally, the quality of work is impaired, the work looses its sense and misses its primary objectives.

Translation of Georges Canguilhem's “Qu’est-ce que la psychologie?” (Source: Revue de Métaphysique et de Morale, Vol. 63, No. 1 [January-March, 1958], 12-25). Georges Canguilhem’s “Qu’est-ce que la psychologie?” was first delivered at the Collège Philosophique on December 18, 1956. It was then published in Revue de Métaphysique et de Morale in 1958. Eight years later, in 1966, it appeared in the second volume of the Cahiers pour l’Analyse, which bore its title. This volume included a “Foreword” by Jean-Claude Milner, a “Supplement” (“Les graphes de Jacques Lacan, commentés par Jacques-Alain Miller”), and contributions by Robert Pagès, Alain Grosrichard, Chevalier de Merian, Serge Leclaire, and Thomas Herbert.

Hasta mediados de la década de 1990, Canguilhem era considerado un filósofo relevante pero “menor” , destacando por el magisterio que ejerció sobre pensadores más conocidos, como Michel Foucault, Pierre Bourdieu o Louis Althusser y su círculo. Más que un filósofo en el pleno sentido de la palabra, se le consideraba como un autor con una obra relativamente reducida, muy confinada en el terreno específico de la historia de la medicina y de las ciencias de la vida, encuadrado en la denominada “escuela de epistemología histórica francesa” (Cavaillés, Koyré, Bachelard, Foucault). Los estudios existentes, poco numerosos hasta los años noventa, lo presentaban como heredero del tipo de historia de las ciencias forjada por Gaston Bachelard (a quien sucedió en 1955 como director del Institut d’Histoire des Sciences. Esta situación comenzó a cambiar radicalmente a partir de 1994. Public Lecture: 'Scary Monsters: The Hopeful Undecidability of David Bowie (1947-2016)' Keele University 15/3/17

The lecture will be about three things: Monsters, Hope and one of the most significant artists of the 20th century, David Bowie. Monsters, because the monster is the outsider template par excellence. Hope, because monsters are quintessentially hopeful. Bowie, because he is the monster writ large. Of all the figures within popular culture, few embody the monster quite like David Bowie.

The lecture will first set some parameters for thinking about monsters, for not all scary creatures are monsters. In doing so, the lecture will draw, in particular, on the work of Michel Foucault and George Canguilhem. Once the theoretical ground has been laid for an analytically precise understanding of the monster, the lecture will consider their intrinsic hopefulness, something which Foucault and Canguilhem neglect.

The lecture will then turn to counter-cultural icon, sublime anti-hero and provocateur, David Bowie, in order to think through some key categorical distinctions which the monster brings to crisis. In particular, and through Bowie, we will journey through the territory of sex, gender and sexuality; human/animal hybridity, and the sacred and profane.

So roll up for the mother of monsters. The lecture promises to be many things, and certainly theoretically rich and an audio-visual feast. What it will not be is dull. Turn and face the strange … ch-ch- changes …

O presente trabalho pretende comparar o debate ocorrido entre Georges Canguilhem e Robert Pagès em Qu’est-ce que la Psychologie?, de 1956, com os escritos de Michel Foucault publicados nos anos 1950. Para isso, após alguns apontamentos históricos, faz-se uma breve análise dos textos de Foucault publicados em 1954, Maladie Mentale et Personnalité e a Introduction à Le Rêve et l’Existence. Os textos de Foucault são então confrontados com o debate entre Canguilhem e Robert Pagès, que por sua vez são analisados e comparados com outros dois textos de Foucault publicados em 1957, La Psychologie de 1850 à 1950 e La Recherche Scientifique et la Psychologie. Tenta-se mostrar que o início da trajetória de Foucault não apenas dialoga com diversos temas sobre a Psicologia e as Ciências Humanas colocados por Canguilhem e Pagès, mas também ensaia respostas cujo teor será mais visível em Folie et Déraison e na Introduction à l’Anthropologie de Kant.

presente dissertação discorre sobre a loucura em suas diferentes modulações e como possibilidade de construção de uma saúde na interlocução com a produção de possíveis através dos procedimentos artísticos. Para tanto, nos valemos do conceito de ausência de obra como plano comum à loucura e à arte em relação com o fora para a concepção do discurso menor da loucura no cerne do discurso maior da razão. Com isto, a linguagem interdita da loucura passa a funcionar por auto-implicação, abrindo a experiência para o múltiplo e o fragmentário. Este procedimento se dá em detrimento do ordenamento de mundo assentado na unidade e na razão apontado por Foucault na noção normalização, que designa o atravessamento do poder sobre a vida que incute em homogeneização do campo. Por outro lado, abordamos em Canguilhem uma concepção de normatividade orientada para a vida como valor maior, posicionamento que propicia uma compreensão de saúde a partir de variabilidade e da singularidade. Auxiliados pelos conceitos de impessoal, de fora, de trágico e de pequena saúde, tomamos a transgressão dos limites do eu e da linguagem na ressurgência da desrazão no pensamento e na experiência enquanto possibilidade de suspensão dos vínculos que ligam obra e sujeito, exercendo um deslocamento dos campos que reúnem por exclusividade a loucura ao patológico.

Este artigo aborda alguns dos sentidos da crise múltipla pela qual passamos (sanitária, política, econômica, moral etc.). Buscamos, primeiramente, restituir o termo crise ao seu sentido médico-filosófico, aquele referente ao diagnóstico de um momento no desenvolvimento de uma doença no qual se decide sobre a sua superação ou se sucumbe à morte. Em seguida, abordamos a obra de alguns autores pertencentes a certa tradição médico-filosófica – sobretudo Canguilhem, dentre os mais recentes –, com vistas a examinar o contexto de sua recepção no Brasil. Por fim, abordamos alguns propósitos que podem resultar de um exame crítico acerca da nossa crise atual, salientando a importância da escuta, da clínica e da recriação de nosso modo de vida.

Résumé : Ce texte concerne la place de la théorie de l’évolution dans l’argumentaire de L’Essai sur quelques problèmes concernant le normal et le pathologique. Après avoir rappelé l’importance de la pensée biologique dans l’œuvre du philosophe et survolé ses premières « études évolutionnistes », l'article analyse du « problème de l’évolution », tel qu’examiné par Canguilhem lors d’un cours en 1942-43 à la faculté des lettres de l'université de Strasbourg. Demeuré inédit, ce cours intitulé "La biologie" complète celui sur "Les normes et le normal" et montre que le philosophe était moins préoccupé par la question de l’hérédité de l’acquis que par la démonstration scientifique du rôle des mutations dans la genèse des espèces. En effet, si la mutation n’est pas de facto létale ou subpathologique, comme le croient habituellement les biologistes d’orientation « fixiste », mais apte à donner naissance à de nouvelles formes de vie, c’est la preuve que « l’anomalie » ne doit pas en retour être tenue d’emblée pour anormale. L’examen des théories évolutionnistes conduit cependant Canguilhem à reconnaître qu’à lui seul, le mutationnisme échoue à rendre compte de « l’orientation adaptative » des vivants ; d’où l’évocation du principe darwinien de sélection naturelle pour expliquer l’adaptation au milieu. Souvent décrite comme un processus conservateur du « type moyen » dans une population, la sélection apparaît elle aussi inadéquate à expliquer la production de la nouveauté en biologie. Afin de lever cette objection, Canguilhem fait appel aux travaux du zoologiste Georges Teissier qui montrent que la sélection peut se révéler « créatrice » lorsque les conditions extérieures changent. Teissier apporte également au philosophe des éléments qui appuient la thèse de la non-indifférence du vivant au milieu, fondement de la « normativité vitale » et point de départ de sa philosophie biologique.

Un élément important des pensées écologiques et écocritiques contemporaines est la question du (ré-)enchantement du monde et de la matérialité. Du « nous n’avons jamais été moderne » latourien aux divers animismes évoqués dans les études scientifiques et culturelles écocritiques, on voit multiples tentatives de questionner le fameux désenchantement apparemment provoqué par la modernité, tel qu’il a été décrit par Max Weber en 1919. En effet, que ce soit le tournant ontologique dans le champ de l’anthropologie, le « néo-matérialisme » ou les études biosémiotiques, on retrouve à chaque fois le sentiment que pour mieux rendre compte de nos liens avec l’environnement qui nous entoure – environnement mis en péril par les actions humaines – nous devons (ré-)apprendre à voir le monde autrement : comme constitués d’agents qui s’entrechoquent et se co-construisent, comme rempli d’affects, de signification non-humaine. 
Dans le domaine du cinéma, surtout en France, cette recherche d’enchantement a très souvent été mené sous le signe de l’animisme. « L’une des plus grandes puissances du cinéma est son animisme » écrivait déjà Jean Epstein dans Le Cinématographe vu de l’Etna (1926). Sergueï Eisenstein voyait l’animisme dans les films Disney comme une révolte à l’encontre de « l’inertie métaphysique ». Plus récemment, le concept du cinéma animiste est au centre de l’un des premiers ouvrages français qui traite ouvertement de l’écocritique cinématographique, Puissances du végétal, dirigé par Teresa Castro, Perig Pitrou et Marie Rebecchi. L’animisme auquel fait référence ces pensées cinématographiques s’inspire surtout des études anthropologiques et ethnographiques. Elle se définit, comme l’écrit Teresa Castro, comme une « croyance, qualifiée alors de primitive, qu’un grand nombre d’entités non humaines telles que des animaux, des végétaux, des artefacts ou des éléments de la nature possèdent une âme  ». Elle vise donc principalement les puissances de la caméra ou de l’image mouvante, qui peuvent révéler ou donner une semblance de vie aux objets filmés. L’on donne au cinéma un certain pouvoir « magique », un principe mystérieux qui permet d’insuffler tout ce qu’il touche d’une nouvelle vitalité.
Nous voudrions, dans cette intervention, problématiser cette pensée de l’animisme, en le rapportant à ces origines chez les chymistes du 17e et 18e siècle. Car si effectivement le premier à utiliser le terme dans le contexte de l’anthropologie était Edward B. Taylor en 1871, il l’a emprunté à la philosophie « chymique » de Georg Ernst Stahl. A l’époque des chymistes, ces chercheurs en biologie, chimie et médecine à l’aube de la révolution scientifique, pris entre la tradition « enchantée » de l’alchimie et la rationalisation « désenchantée » du scientisme moderne, on retrouve aussi des « animistes ». Là aussi, l’animisme luttait contre ce qu’on voyait comme une inertie métaphysique, incarné par le mécanicisme hérité de Descartes et de Newton.
Mais il y avait aussi dans le rang des chymistes une troisième voie : le vitalisme. Les animistes comme Stahl pensaient que la matière vivante devrait être perçue comme plus que simplement la somme de ses parties, puisqu’une certaine force vitale (entéléchie, vis essentialis, etc.) se trouve ajoutée ou infusée aux composantes chimiques. Les vitalistes comme le chymiste belge Jean Baptiste Van Helmont ou les médecins de l’École de Montpellier, bien qu’opposés au mécanicisme, rejetaient tout principe vital ou extérieur. Plutôt, ils prônaient une philosophie plus « matérialiste », définissant ainsi la vie comme émergeant à partir de dispositions particulières de la matière, comme un produit de la matière qui ne peut être entièrement réductible à ses composantes matérielles. La vie ne serait pas une force extérieure qui vient donner vie à de la matière perçue comme inerte, mais au contraire un principe qui émerge à partir d’agencements de matières entre elles, sans que ce principe puisse être réduit simplement à la somme des parties.
Cette forme de vitalisme « fonctionnel » ou « structurel  » a par ailleurs trouvé des héritier·e·s au XXe siècle, dont le plus notable serait Georges Canguilhem. Pour Canguilhem, être vitaliste c’est non seulement penser la vie comme ce qui est « non-indifférent » aux conditions matérielles qui la rend possible, mais aussi une attitude particulière à prendre face à l’objet du savoir. L’attitude mécaniste, selon Canguilhem, consiste à affirmer une séparation entre observateur·ice et objet, permettant d’énoncer des lois et des principes abstraits, qui peuvent être appliqués plus largement à d’autres objets « similaires ». L’attitude vitaliste, en revanche, est une « subordination » à la contingence de ce qui est observé. Il y a reconnaissance d’une relation mutuellement constitutive entre le savoir et l’objet du savoir, et cette relation est donc toujours ouverte, en devenir perpétuel .
Nous proposons ainsi d’aborder l’enchantement cinématographique nécessaire à une pensée écocritique à partir de cette forme de vitalisme, inspiré à la fois de Canguilhem et des chymistes qui l’ont précédé. Cela viendrait alors complémenter et complexifier une pensée animiste de l’image. À partir d’études de cas venant des cinéastes associé·e·s aux laboratoires d’artistes autogérés en France, nous voudrions prendre le pari de penser le cinéma comme chimie, cette science « nomade » et « mineure » dans les termes de Deleuze et Guattari. C’est prendre le pari de retrouver l’enchantement non seulement dans les images mouvantes projetées sur l’écran, mais aussi dans la matérialité de la création cinématographique, dans les processus vivants qui contribuent à faire émerger ces images : voir les films comme étant pris dans des réseaux d’agencements atériels et sémiotiques. C’est aussi prendre une attitude particulière, vitaliste, relativement aux objets de nos études, permettant de ne pas les figer dans un rapport réifié au monde, mais de les voir comme affectant tout en étant affecté par le monde qui les entoure.

En la década del cincuenta y principios de la década del sesenta se produjo un fenómeno particular: una serie de autores, enmarcados en lo que se conoce como la epistemología francesa, hicieron uso del concepto de ideología para referirse al carácter tecnocrático de la psicología de la época. Por extraño que suene para quien desconozca la temprana obra de Foucault (nos referimos a sus escritos anteriores a Historia de la locura en la época clásica de 1961), en sus inicios el filósofo francés utilizó el
marxismo como grilla de análisis de los fenómenos psicológicos y de la psicología en general. Por su parte, a principios de la década del sesenta la  temprana obra de Louis Althusser coincidió en el diagnóstico de los anteriores autores, en tanto la psicología es calificada por él como una “ideología tecnocrática” que al pretender una autonomía
disciplinar pierde su relación con la realidad social. Finalmente, puede ubicarse a Georges Canguilhem, quien en la misma época calificó a la psicología contemporánea como una disciplina dependiente de postulados filosóficos y, peor aún, como un mero instrumentalismo del cual los psicólogos no son (ni quieren ser) conscientes. Estos autores resultan representativos de un campo intelectual francés en el cual la psicología comenzó a ser catalogada como una disciplina de carácter ideológico, entendiendo por esto que la psicología de la época poseía un carácter netamente adaptativo a las
demandas de las sociedades industriales y a una determinada configuración ideológica del hombre. En este marco, nos proponemos desarrollar el análisis particular llevado a cabo por Georges Canguilhem respecto a la psicología. En 1956, Canguilhem pronuncia una conferencia titulada ¿Qué es la psicología?; ella se publicará en 1958 y años más tarde se establecerá como una referencia obligada respecto a los juicios en torno a la psicología y la ideología, sobretodo por su sentencia final.

Representations of misanthropy have frequently attributed it to one or both of two motivations. On the one hand, the misanthrope is often depicted as being ruled by passion, their intense, emotional abhorrence of humanity the result of personal affronts or misfortunes, like Shakespeare’s Timon of Athens. On the other, the misanthrope will be portrayed as guided by unbending principle, their reasoned disdain deriving from a high-minded moral code, like Molière’s Alceste. The videogame Plague Inc., which casts players as a pathogen with the objective of annihilating the human species, offers an alternative misanthropy, however. Inviting us to invest in the values of a virus, bacterium or parasite, without emotional investment or underpinning rationale, it entertains the possibility of a misanthropy without humanity.

Stať, která je inspirovaná polemikou Georgese Canguilhema s positivistickým pojetím lékařství jako experimentální a exaktní vědy, problematizuje stanovení objektivního rozdílu mezi zdravím a nemocí. Jelikož se rozdíl mezi zdravím a nemocí nutně zakládá na normativních soudech, lékařská věda se nikdy nesetkává s patologií ve formě neutrálního stavu věcí, ale musí být práva osobě pacienta, pro nějž je nemoc událostí a hledáním nového způsobu, jak žít.

Abstract:
The original question this thesis started with arose in the context of our professional activities within organizations dealing with the integration of disabled people in the world of work. How could policies specifically addressed to this public be enforced when the very definition of what characterized disabled people had not yet been formulated? The question is paradoxical, since this absence of a precise and homogeneous definition did not prevent the professionals of these organizations from working.
After focusing our analyses on the limits of the current classifications of disabilities, on the impossibility to define disability with the exactness of scientific classifications or by only resorting to medicine, we thought of conceiving disability as a singular relationship between social norms and individual experience. In so doing, Foucault’s first works and mostly unpublished writings by Canguilhem were a great help. These authors allowed us to prepare our formulation of the concept of disability which is based on Yves Schwartz’s central idea of “corps-soi” (body and self together). A disability is then considered as a singular experience of the “body and self” in the face of antagonistic social norms. This view of what disability is lead us then to present our main thesis: disability, considered as a concept, can be used as a prism to renew the analysis of human practices and of theoretical discourse. We then submitted our thesis to three different test procedures, so as to check if, with disability as a starting point, we could renew our understanding of activities and theoretical corpuses, well-known though they may be. We felt the process tended to validate our reflection and eventually made suggestions as to how public policies for the disabled could benefit from our thesis.

Résumé
L’interrogation première de cette thèse est issue de questionnements liés à notre activité professionnelle au sein de dispositifs dédiés à l’insertion professionnelle et au maintien en emploi des personnes handicapées. Comment mener des politiques spécifiquement destinées à ce public alors même que la définition de ce qui caractérisait les personnes handicapées n’était pas encore formalisée ? Comment concevoir une généalogie des classifications sociales dans le champ du handicap qui ne soit pas une histoire du handicap, quelle en serait la portée pour la philosophie juridique et pour l’épistémologie des classification du vivant ?
Après avoir fait porter nos analyses sur les limites des classifications actuelles du handicap, sur l’impossibilité de définir le handicap avec la rigueur des classifications scientifiques ou de le définir par le seul recours à la médecine, nous avons envisagé de concevoir le handicap comme une relation singulière entre normes sociales et expérience individuelle. En cela le recours aux premières œuvres de Foucault et à des écrits, pour une bonne part inédits, de Canguilhem nous était d’un grand secours. Ces auteurs nous permettaient de préparer notre formalisation du concept de handicap, en situant notre proposition centrale dans un rapport complexe entre les normes sociales et la normativité individuelle. Pour cela nous nous sommes appuyés sur les concepts d’expérience et de « corps-soi » empruntée à Yves Schwartz. Le handicap est alors considéré comme une expérience singulière du corps-soi à l’épreuve de normes sociales antagoniques. Notre thèse principale était alors la suivante : loin de n’être qu’une norme de l’anormalité, le concept de handicap peut servir de prisme pour renouveler l’analyse de pratiques humaines et de formes discursives théoriques. Nous l'avons alors soumis à trois procédures de test dans des domaines d’activité et des corpus théoriques. Notre thèse ainsi renforcée nous avons pour finir tenté de proposer un réinvestissement de nos analyses dans les politiques publiques destinées aux personnes handicapées.

L’indagine filosofica sul significato delle nozioni di salute e malattia ha, come è facilmente comprensibile, una rilevanza diretta non solo per la bioetica ma anche per la concreta prassi clinica, infatti la medicina può operare solo a condizione di presupporre come note e chiaramente definite le caratteristiche essenziali sia della condizione sana sia, soprattutto, della condizione patologica. Ecco dunque il motivo dell’importanza del contributo consulenziale di Boorse e dell’OMS, e il motivo di una riflessione sui concetti di salute e di malattia che, come è noto, si intrecciano con la prassi medica e con la vita di ogni persona.


Questa riflessione ci porterà pertanto, inizialmente, a cercare di comprendere l’intreccio che esiste tra il nucleo del pensiero ippocratico e l’orientamento di Claude Bernard, tra l’equilibrio ippocratico-galenico e la prospettiva statistica del filosofo americano Chistopher Boorse, tra l’approccio medico di Ippocrate e la visione olista, passando per la sua considerazione del malato e della malattia, che ripudia il riduzionismo e si apre alla contemplazione sia della malattia intesa come disease che intesa come illness. È bene ricordare, quando ci si accinge a parlare di collegamenti, ovvero quando si operano dei legami tra prospettive che tra di loro presentano un deciso scarto temporale, specificare e chiarificare la natura di questi legami. Infatti, nei casi citati non si discute di intrecci superficiali tra i diversi pensieri degli studiosi antichi e moderni, ma si può parlare di una riflessione che vede protagoniste le parole delle opere e degli articoli, che hanno permesso di notare come diverse strade teoriche moderne mostrino i loro retaggi in prospettive molto più antiche. Lo stesso Boorse, si vedrà, raccoglierà le parole di Galeno per spiegare la sua determinata teoria, e Jaspers, in qualità di medico oltre che di filosofo, adotterà l’approccio ippocratico evidenziando la sua importanza a livello pratico. L’atteggiamento di Ippocrate, di cui non bisogna trascurare l’antichità per comprendere a fondo la sua pervasività anche in tempi notevolmente successivi, fu un approccio incentrato sulla cura dell’individuo malato nella sua totalità, nella sua interezza, ed è stato decisamente ripreso dalle teorie oliste, e in particolare dalla proposta definitoria dell’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità. In questo modo si può aprire la strada ad una riflessione più ampia, che coinvolge e analizza il pensiero di Boorse sia con i suoi risvolti migliori, soprattutto dal punto di vista della pratica medica di cui si vuole rendere consulente teorico, ma anche con le sue mancanze, che la prospettiva olista cerca di colmare. Quest’ultima, tuttavia, presenta anch’essa dei rischi che, come nel caso di Boorse, minacciano l’ottimale riuscita dell’intento, compromettendone le direzioni positive.

Porre evidenza questo aspetto permette una duplice riflessione: da un lato significa risaltare il fatto che la cura della salute spetta innanzitutto al diretto interessato che, come suggeriscono diversi autori olisti come Canguilhem, è spesso il primo individuo a constatare il proprio stato di salute e di malattia; e dall’altro offre la comprensione del fatto che, allargando i confini della malattia e della salute, entrambe rischiano di sfumare, facendo approdare la salute “perfetta” ad un sogno, un miraggio, e la malattia ad una condizione nella quale è complesso non cadere.

Résumé : Il est courant d’inscrire La Logique du vivant de François Jacob dans la mouvance de l’épistémologie historique. Par contraste avec cette interprétation, nous montrons tout d’abord que c’est dans le cadre même de son itinéraire scientifique qu’émergea le problème de penser l’histoire de l’étude des êtres vivants. Nous montrons ensuite que c’est l’opposition à la conception biologisante de Jacques Monod relative au développement du savoir scientifique (sélection des idées) qui a conduit Jacob à engager un examen le menant à reconnaître une succession temporelle d’objets dont l’émergence recompose la pensée biologique. Enfin, nous soutenons que ce réexamen a effectivement produit une lecture de l’histoire de la biologie concordante avec d’autres tentatives menées à la même époque (comme celles que l’on trouve chez Foucault et, par-delà, chez Canguilhem), mais que cette concordance relève de la rencontre et non de l’adoption ni même de l’inspiration. En définitive, tout en exhibant certaines caractéristiques de l’épistémologie historique, La Logique du vivant est le livre d’un biologiste que les circonstances de sa recherche scientifique ont conduit à l’histoire.


Abstract : François Jacob’s The Logic of life is commonly read as a contribution to historical epistemology. Moving beyond this received view, this article shows, firstly, that the need for a history of the study of living beings emerged out of his own scientific practice. Secondly, I demonstrate that Jacques Monod’s biological conception of the growth of science (selection of ideas) is what prompted Jacob to write a history in terms of a series of emerging objects in the history of biological thought. In the end, this re-examination of the history of biology, I argue, resulted in a singular historical work in accordance with others at the time (such as Foucault and, before him, Canguilhem), but is not the sign of a direct influence of these other readings on his thinking. Overall, even if it exhibits certain features of historical epistemology, The Logic of life is primarily the work of a biologist who was led to history by the context of his research.

Para abordar el siguiente trabajo, comienzo desde las preguntas ¿cómo concebimos a la salud y a la enfermedad?, ¿las consideramos como elementos mutuamente excluyentes? ¿Consideramos a la enfermedad como el daño de un órgano, o un elemento aislado que no se correlaciona con el contexto donde esta inmersos los sujetos?

Dans sa conférence de 1956 « Qu'est-ce la psychologie ? » 1 , Georges Canguilhem adresse à la psychologie la question philosophique de son sens et de son essence. Est-elle une science ? Cette question se pose du fait de la diversité des disciplines psychologiques et du projet toujours reconduit de les unifier. Quel est le sens de ce projet d'unification dont la permanence et l'échec semblent signer la spécificité de la psychologie ? La thèse de Canguilhem est que cet échec s'explique par l'absence de réflexion épistémologique de la psychologie sur elle-même. L'unité de la psychologie de Daniel Lagache 2 illustre ce problème. Sa psychologie de la conduite tente de faire la synthèse entre, d'une part, la psychologie expérimentale qui se définit par sa méthode mais fait l'impasse sur la définition de son objet et, d'autre part, les psychologies clinique, psychanalytique, sociale et ethnologique qui ont le même objet, l'homme strictement distingué de l'animal, mais pas de méthode commune. L'impossible unité de la psychologie ne tient pas au fait que ses diverses disciplines présentent des conceptions antagonistes de leur objet ou de leur méthode, mais au fait qu'elles n'explicitent ni ces conceptions, ni leur projet scientifique propre, ni celui de leur éventuelle unification. Il incombe par conséquent à la philosophie d'assumer cette réflexion épistémologique et de tracer l'histoire qui exhume le projet, l'intention, le sens et la visée de chacune des formes de la psychologie et de leur unification. Finalement, l'épistémologie historique de la psychologie explicite le sens anthropologique, l'idée de l'homme qui gît au fond de tout projet psychologique. Lorsque la psychologie refuse de soumettre à une telle enquête, elle se révèle comme une pratique éclectique qui conçoit l'homme comme un outil et contribue, en se faisant passer pour une science, à son instrumentalisation sociale.

Tese que reconstitui toda a trajetória do pensamento de Georges Canguilhem, buscando demonstrar a imprevisibilidade das mutações ocorridas em sua obra, bem como a originalidade de cada reformulação pela qual ela passou, sem que nunca se apagasse totalmente a conservação de uma herança dos períodos anteriores. Divide-se em quatro capítulos, para cada um dos quais foi priorizado um acontecimento externo como índice de modificação da filosofia canguilhemiana. O primeiro capítulo (1926-1939) inicia-se reconstituindo a influência exercida sobre ele por Alain e pela Wertphilosophie, tendo como marco de mudança os acontecimentos políticos que conduziram à Segunda Guerra Mundial, o que levará Canguilhem a romper com o pacifismo de seu primeiro mestre e a constituir um pluralismo axiológico que se coloca para além do neo-kantismo. O segundo capítulo (1940-1956) tem como acontecimento sua incursão no domínio médico, já iniciada alguns anos antes, mas que terá suas consequências com a publicação de suas três teses, em que reelabora sua filosofia dos valores inserindo agora a vida como valor a coordenar os demais valores. Entre o segundo e o terceiro períodos analisados, Canguilhem passa a emprestar conceitos à epistemologia bachelardiana na prática da história das ciências, o que permitirá que ele aborde o acontecimento que analisaremos no terceiro capítulo de um modo novo. Assim, o terceiro capítulo (1957-1966) prioriza a ruptura realizada pelo advento da genética no domínio das ciências da vida, o que exigirá uma retificação do conceito de vida por Canguilhem, o que ele fará concebendo essa novidade em biologia como uma “ruptura epistemológica”. O quarto e último capítulo (1966-1995) analisa um acontecimento na esfera das ciências sociais e humanas na França, ocorrida sobretudo com as obras de Althusser e Foucault. Canguilhem formulará um último conceito, o de “ideologia científica”, que permitirá responder a seus jovens colegas e revigorar o empréstimo que já fizera à epistemologia histórica de Bachelard, ensejando também um reexame de toda sua obra pregressa. Desse modo, a filosofia na qual a obra de Canguilhem culmina pode definir-se como: um pluralismo dos valores (cap. 1), coordenado nos termos de um vitalismo racionalista (cap. 2), que se nutre dos resultados colhidos a partir da prática de uma epistemologia histórica das ciências da vida (cap. 3), cujo objetivo é reformular o estatuto filosófico do homem enquanto ser vivente, investigando as condições de possibilidade práticas para uma pedagogia da cura (cap. 4).

Iremos limitar nossa exposição a dois problemas concernentes à conceituação da norma no que se refere aos organismos vivos, os quais acreditamos serem os que mais propiciam uma articulação entre as obras O normal e o patológico, de Georges Canguilhem, e O nascimento da clínica, de Michel Foucault: o primeiro deles reporta à natureza da diferença entre os estados normal (ou fisiológico) e anormal (ou patológico); o segundo se refere ao papel exercido pela clínica nessa diferenciação. Pretendemos abordar, com a primeira dessas questões, a crítica que a epistemologia histórica proposta por Canguilhem dirige ao positivismo científico, bem como a qualquer forma idealista de compreensão da ciência, a partir da consideração sobre a impossibilidade de determinação científica da norma; com a segunda, trataremos o papel que o campo das práticas externas ao conteúdo intrínseco de uma ciência exerce na elaboração dos conceitos mesmos dessa ciência. Ao final, mencionaremos algumas das principais relações entre esse pensamento e a arqueologia do saber praticada por Foucault em sua inflexão sobre o domínio médico, apenas apontando para a abertura que o autor iria dar à questão nos seus livros posteriores, notadamente em As palavras e as coisas, quando estenderia sua análise a todas as chamadas ciências do homem. *** Canguilhem dividiu a redação do ensaio original de O normal e o patológico, apresentado como tese de doutorado em medicina no ano de 1943, em duas partes. Na primeira delas, encarregou-se de refutar o argumento positivista, atribuído a Augusto Comte e, parcialmente, a Claude Bernard 2 , segundo o qual haveria uma identidade entre os estados fisiológico e patológico de um organismo vivo. Ampliando a concepção nosológica estabelecida por Broussais, Comte teria postulado que qualquer modificação na ordem própria a um organismo seria devida a uma variação de intensidade de um ou de alguns dos seus fatores constitutivos. Nesse sentido, uma disfunção do organismo não alteraria a natureza de nenhum componente existente em seu funcionamento.

In recent years there have been plenty of conferences dedicated to historical epistemology. In the last two years alone, three conferences on this topic have met in Berlin, Columbia and Leuven. The first conference dedicated to historical epistemology was organized by Ian Hacking in Montreal in 1993. This wealth of conferences has prompted some to think that such a craze is a mere fad: historical epistemology would only be a useless label ("naming without necessity," according to Gingras) 1 or even a brand that would only serve an advertising purpose: that of justifying the applications for funding of a particular institution. In other words, all the fuss about historical epistemology would merely amount to creating a market from nothing. However, anybody working in the advertising business knows very well that it is impossible to create a market from nothing: nothing can be sold if it does not answer a certain need, albeit more or less vaguely felt.

The eminent French biologist and historian of biology, François Jacob, once notoriously declared “On n’interroge plus la vie dans les laboratoires”: laboratory research no longer inquires into the notion of ‘Life’. Nowadays, as David Hull puts it, “both scientists and philosophers take ontological reduction for granted… Organisms are ‘nothing but’ atoms, and that is that.” In the mid-twentieth century, from the immediate post-war period to the late 1960s, French philosophers of science such as Georges Canguilhem, Raymond Ruyer and Gilbert Simondon returned to Jacob’s statement with an odd kind of pathos: they were determined to reverse course. Not by imposing a different kind of research program in laboratories, but by an unusual combination of historical and philosophical inquiry into the foundations of the life sciences (particularly medicine, physiology and the cluster of activities that were termed ‘biology’ in the early 1800s). Even in as straightforwardly scholarly a work as La formation du concept de réflexe aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles (1955), Canguilhem speaks oddly of “defending vitalist biology,” and declares that Life cannot be grasped by logic (or at least, “la vie déconcerte la logique”). Was all this historical and philosophical work merely a reassertion of ‘mysterian’, magical vitalism? In order to answer this question we need to achieve some perspective on Canguilhem’s ‘vitalism’, notably with respect to its philosophical influences such as Kurt Goldstein.

At the heart of today’s return to ontology is Kant and his interlocutors whom we must decide on if continental philosophy can decide what to do with matter, spacetime, the living, the brain, our genes, etc. Speculative realists are simply walking away, disavowing Kant’s canonization, and call us to “Relinquish the Transcendental!” and break with philosophical traditions that take as their foundation the thinking of being beyond empiricism. Research on Foucault as a Kantian as well as a student of Canguilhem is reviewed to show how Foucault’s genealogical approach is adapted from Canguilhem’s Nietzschean historization of medicine and pathology, largely situating himself within a reading of the organized/organizing living-beings of Kant’s Critique of Judgment to do so. Defending a preservation of Kant and the trascendental in following my mentor Catherine Malabou, this essay pushes for a philosophy of life in lieu of pure mathematics, as practiced by speculative realists. Combining these historical thinkers with Malabou's work on epigenesis, this essay ultimately concludes that there is indeed a coming of a philosophy of life sciences that may be able to confront the continental/analytic split as well as the more general split between science and philosophy at-large, a possibility that the fugue and abandon of speculative realism – having cast itself into a post-critical and post-metaphysical position – is simply unable to offer.

Questo saggio intende chiarire la genealogia del concetto di dispositivo in Foucault contro l’interpretazione avanzata da Agamben (2006), il quale riduce, via Hegel, il dispositivo biopolitico foucaultiano unicamente alla dispositio teologica, ovvero all’idea di piano divino della provvidenza della prima Cristianità. Al contrario, in questo saggio viene fatto notare che quando Foucault, nel 1975, introduce per la prima volta l’idea di dispositivo di biopotere come progetto normativo, egli si rifà alla nozione di normatività sociale del suo maestro Canguilhem. Il dispositivo viene quindi tracciato filologicamente e teoreticamente alla definizione di normatività che Foucault trae dall’opera di Canguilhem Il normale e il patologico (1966) e all’uso del termine ‘dispositivo’ da parte dello stesso Canguilhem nel saggio “Macchina e Organismo” (1952). Entrambe queste due filiazioni procedono dalla nozione di normatività organica che Canguilhem adotta a sua volta dal neurologo ebreo-tedesco Kurt Goldstein, ovvero da una tradizione della Lebensphilosophie che appare incompatibile con la tesi teologica di Agamben. In conclusione, la genealogia del normativo che viene riscoperta nella storia del termine ‘dispositivo’ rivela ancora una volta una questione centrale nel dibattito sulla biopolitica, ovvero il potere normativo del soggetto e, in particolare, la sua costituente abnormalità.

El campo de la salud mental es indudablemente complejo, y los aportes a su estudio no se agotan en las disciplinas de tipo clínico. Antes bien, otros saberes, profesiones, experiencias, tradiciones y disciplinas que no se inscriben ni definen por una tradición clínica también están en condiciones de realizar aportes analíticos que contribuyan a la comprensión de esta
complejidad, no armonía y devenir del campo.
De esas experiencias, para este escrito interesa recuperar algunos aportes provenientes de las ciencias sociales, y más específicamente de algunas tradiciones de pensamiento sociológico, histórico y filosófico ligadas a la corriente del control social.
Empleando métodos analítico-interpretativos sobre bibliografía específica, en este escrito se presentan algunos aportes de diversos autores procedentes de distintas perspectivas, que comparten el interés por analizar la salud mental en términos históricosociales, y vincularla con procesos sociales de más
amplio espectro que incluyen interrogaciones por la normalidad, la salud, el conflicto social, el poder, la verdad y el saber, entre otras nociones, seguidas de algunas conclusiones.

Henning Schmidgen, Berlin: Merve, 2006, pp. 157-178] In seiner Einleitung in das Studium der experimentellen Medizin schildert Claude Bernard den Tierkörper oft als lebende Maschine, deren Funktionsweise vom Physiologen zu untersuchen, zu erklären und zu kontrollieren ist. An einer Stelle jedoch kehrt Bernard diese Sichtweise um und spricht -als Physiologe -über die »leblose«, die »vom Menschen gebaute Maschine«. Die fragliche Passage steht im Zusammenhang der berühmten Unterscheidung zwischen dem »Organmilieu« (oder milieu intérieur) und dem äußeren, »kosmischen Milieu« organischer Individuen: »Die Veränderungen des Klimas haben keinerlei Einfluß auf den Gang einer Dampfmaschine, aber jeder weiß, daß im Inneren dieser Maschine genau bestimmte Bedingungen von Temperatur, Druck und Feuchtigkeit mit mathematischer Sicherheit alle ihre Bewegungen regeln. Wir könnten also auch bei leblosen Maschinen ein makrokosmisches und ein mikrokosmisches Milieu unterscheiden. Jedenfalls würde die Vervollkommnung der Maschine darin bestehen, sie vom Einfluß des äußeren Milieus möglichst unabhängig zu machen.« 1 Es ist klar, daß es Bernard nicht wirklich darum geht, die Technik einer Untersuchung in physiologischen Begriffen zuzuführen. Sein flüchtiger Blick auf die Innen-und Außenwelt der vom Menschen konstruierten Maschinen dient dazu, die Rückführung des Lebens auf »unabänderliche physikalisch-chemische Bedingungen« plausibel zu machen. Dennoch bleibt ein rhetorischer Überschuß: Wie würde eine Wissenschaft von den Maschinen aussehen, die die strapazierte Phrase vom »Eigenleben der Technik« nicht nur ernst, sondern wörtlich nähme? Doch nicht Canguilhem selbst, sein Schüler Gilbert Simondon ist es, der die Fruchtbarkeit der damit aufgerufenen Untersuchungen und Überlegungen erkundet und in einer ebenso grundlegenden wie eigenwilligen Abhandlung fortgeführt hat: Du mode dʼexistence des objets techniques (1958). Der Name von Claude Bernard fehlt zwar in der in der Bibliographie dieses Buches; dennoch scheint Simondons Theorie des technischen Objekts genau jenen Überschuß aufzufangen, der sich in der zitierten Passage der Einleitung bemerkbar macht. Simondon beginnt mit einer Betrachtung der Abstraktheit bzw. Konkretheit des Zusammenwirkens von inneren Organen technischer Objekte und geht von da aus zu einer detaillierten Erörterung des Verhältnisses von Werkzeugen, Maschinen und Fabriken zur jeweiligen natürlichen und künstlichen Umwelt über. Eine Eisenbahn fügt sich in Landschaften ein, indem sie technische und geographische Umwelt miteinander kommunizieren läßt; eine Rohrturbine hingegen funktioniert nur innerhalb einer Umwelt, die weitgehend durch sie selbst bedingt ist. Der Idee eines buchstäblichen Eigenlebens der Technik steht Simondon nicht ohne Reserven gegenüber. Dies zeigt schon der Titel seines Buches. Simondon unternimmt es, die Existenzweise technischer Objekte in ihrer Spezifizität zu bestimmen. Първо, проблематизира критически концепцията за здраве и явяващите се като „естествени“ мисловни форми, които я придружават, и демонстрира историчността на същите тези форми. Второ, изгражда типология, описваща съвременните здравни утопии (това е осъществено през работата на Жорж Кангилем върху понятията за норма и патология, но и философските разработки върху проблема за утопията на Карл Манхайм, Пол Рикьор и Райчо Пожарлиев). Трето, демонстрира тези утопии като функция на производството на принадена стойност, но и на принадено наслаждение, вплетени в една обща логика по създаване и възпроизвеждане на ексцес.

This paper comments on the contemporary health utopias and suggests several lines of analysis. First, to critically re-think the concept of “health” and its seemingly natural but actually historical forms of thought. Second, to create a typology which will help portraying the contemporary health utopias (through Georges Canguilhem’s texts on the concepts for normal and pathological and the philosophical works on the problem of utopia by Karl Mannheim, Paul Ricoeur and Raicho Pozharliev). Third, to demonstrate these utopias as a function of the production of surplus-value and surplus-enjoyment, entangled into a common logic of creating and reproducing excess.

Les quatre sections qui composent ce mémoire de synthèse correspondent aux quatre rubriques du Volume 2, où sont réunis des travaux publiés. This is a general paper dealing with the history of the history of science, with a special focus on historians and epistemologists who bolster their historiographic approach by making reference and/or relying on science, e.g. Popper, Bachelard, and Canguilhem

This article investigates the relation between machine and ecology, and the philosophical and historical questions concealed in these two seemingly incompatible terms. The opposition between machine and organism was fundamental to philosophical projects since the eighteenth century. However, the emergence of cybernetics in the first half of the twentieth century proposed a unified logic which transcended the dualism between machine and organism, or technics and nature, and therefore also the opposition between machine and ecology. Cybernetics poses a limit to philosophy, which Heidegger called the end of philosophy, and also a challenge for thinking. If the promises of cybernetics are effective, does it suggest also that cybernetics is the way out of modernity? Or is it rather, as we want to suggest here, that after cybernetics it is no longer a dualism which is the source of danger in our epoch, but rather a non-dualistic totalizing power present in modern technology? If one cannot simply oppose machine and ecology, we demand a political ecology of machines, which will center on the concept of technodiversity, in the sense of a systematic approach for understanding the history and plurality of cosmotechnics and their diverging futures by revisiting the question of locality.

This essay clarifies the genealogy of the term and concept of dispositif in Foucault against a recent interpretation introduced by Agamben, one which reduces the biopolitical dispositif to the idea of the theological dispositio. On the contrary, this essay argues that Foucault was influenced by his master Canguilhem's notion of socio-organic normativity, when in 1975 he introduced the idea of the dispositif of biopower as a normative project. The dispositif is then traced back to the definition of social normativity that Foucault takes from Canguilhem's The Normal and the Pathological (1966) and to the use of the term dispositif by Canguilhem himself in the essay " Machine and Organism " (1952). Both these lineages proceed from the notion of organic normativity that Canguilhem adopts from a tradition of Lebensphilosophie that appears to be incompatible with Agamben's theological thesis.

The importance given by historian and philosopher of science Georges Canguilhem (1904–1995) to the role of practice, techniques, and experimentation in concept-formation was largely overlooked by commentators. After placing Canguilhem’s contributions within the larger history of historical epistemology in France, and clarifying his views regarding this expression, I re-evaluate the relation between concepts and experimental practices in Canguilhem’s philosophy of science. Drawing on his early writings on the relations between science and technology in the 1930s, on the Essai sur quelques problèmes concernant le normal et le pathologique (1943), and on La formation du concept de réflexe aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles (1955), I
argue that the formation and rectification of concepts in Canguilhem’s sense are intrinsically bound with the experimental, material, technical, and cultural contexts in which concepts are operationalized.

In the introduction to the Normal and the Pathological, Canguilhem's doctoral dissertation in medicine, defended in 1943, he claimed, "philosophy is a reflection for which all unknown material [matière étrangère] is good." In this case the "unknown material" was precisely medicine; "a technique or art at the crossroads of several sciences" which was supposed to provide "an introduction to concrete human problems." Canguilhem had started studying medicine seven years before, while he was a high-school professor in Toulouse. At the time he was distancing himself from the philosophical framework that had marked his studies and writings during the previous decade. This framework implied an anti-vitalist, Kantian and Cartesian approach to man, strongly influenced by his mentor Emile Chartier, also known as Alain. In this chapter, I try to provide concrete explanations concerning his decision to study medicine. I will not rely on those proposed by the existent scholarship, which frequently relate his decision to his interest in technology and technique. On the contrary, by examining unpublished material, such as a series of lectures given in Toulouse between 1933 and 1935, I claim that the motivation of his turn has to be related to the readings of works in psychology and ethology undertaken during this period.

Il a souvent été reproché à Foucault et à Canguilhem de ne pas avoir rendu justice aux sciences humaines. Il nous semble au contraire que leur œuvre est centrée sur les sciences humaines et leur histoire. Mais, comme Comte avant eux, ces auteurs distinguent entre les sciences humaines, valorisant certaines disciplines, comme la médecine, en critiquant d’autres, comme la psychologie. On peut parler en ce sens d’une véritable « désunité » des sciences humaines. L’histoire des sciences humaines qu’écrivent Canguilhem et Foucault éclaire ainsi certaines des caractéristiques du style français en histoire des sciences.
