The same is true for the variety of Ciudad Real, Spain, where our data have shown not only lack of indication of any type of change at the present moment through inferences made from apparent time, but also evidence of its stability in the last hundred years by looking at the data from the available linguistic atlases. However, in our investigation, we performed a study of all the separate contexts in which the syllable-final s occurs, and it was discovered that in one of them, the sequence /s/+/t/, a different kind of behavior was registered.

In this paper, we will try to explain how it is possible for a stable variable to contain within itself a subvariable which in turn shows signs of a change in progress.

In this article a critical look is taken at the ways its influence has been studied up to this date, and, based on the data from our own previous research in Ciudad Real, Spain, a more precise way of assessing its relevance is proposed. It is argued that the procedure of comparing one word-internal context (preconsonantal) with three word-final ones (preconsonantal, prevocalic and prepausal) is fundamentally flawed, and it is suggested that the possible influence of all contextual factors needs to be eliminated for us to be able to appraise the actual importance of the distributional factors. When assessed in this way, word position seems to play a far more marginal role than is usually considered.

conditioning factors that govern its occurrence. Its importance among Spanish varieties and
its place within the syllable-final s weakening continuum are also considered. Next we turn to
the gradual disappearance of this phenomenon in Ciudad Real (Spain), using both apparent
time inferences and real time evidence. The results from our investigation show a somewhat
atypical change from below and an interesting development of the syllable-final s weakening
process; namely, rhotacism is not replaced by the standard canonical form but rather gives
way to a more advanced form of weakening. This implies that, although the standard variant
has shown complete stability during the last century, the weakening process is progressing
among the non-standard allophones. From a methodological point of view, this study has
revealed the importance of analyzing different individual contexts in which the syllable-final
s can appear, since global data can conceal some important patterns.

The data obtained in this research is contrasted with data on syllable-final s weakening in other Spanish dialects, and Ciudad Real is found to be among the dialects in the incipient stages of the change. The results of this study have shown that phonetic context, sex/gender, educational level and age are good predictors of the variability of the segment in question. It was also shown that distributional factors play a significantly smaller role than had previously been considered. Both real and apparent time data show the variable syllable-final s is stable on a general level, although two changes in progress (one from above and one from below) have also been detected. The variability of syllable-initial s was also analyzed, and it was found that, as regards this variable, Ciudad Real belongs among the vast majority of Spanish dialects with marginal levels of weakening in this context.
