One such example is the female character of Golfo who inspired creators and performers in poetry, literature, theater and music as early as the middle of the 19th century. It remains almost unfathomable whether the relevant songs come from the oral tradition that existed before Spyridon Peresiadis’s iconic dramatic romance of 1893 or if they were created later due to the great appeal the work had. Golfo is an apt dramatization of an old legend in the Peloponnese area of Helmos, where the story plays out. The narrative centers around the poor and orphaned Golfo and a shepherd of the area named Tasos. Golfo is besieged by the chief of the area, Kitsos, yet she denies his proposals and remains faithful to the vows of love she has exchanged with Tassos. The young couple are engaged and prepare to marry when Tasos receives a wedding offer for Kitso’s cousin Stavroula. Despite his initial refusal, Tasos is eventually enticed by Stavroula’s great dowry and leaves Golfo. The young girl is desperate, loses her mind and curses Tassos. Shortly before their marriage, the glorious Golfo lifts the curse and wishes them every happiness. Tasos is shaken by the greatness of her love, changes his mind and returns back to her, but it’s too late: Golfo has died. Tasos commits suicide by her side. Songs about Golfo were recorded during the first half of the 20th century: approximately sixty sides were made from 1907 to 1958 in Athens, Istanbul, Paris, and America in various configurations. A new framework for both the reproduction and reception of the folk song is gradually being formed by studying the earlier discographies of folk music. This process is crucial, on the one hand because specific versions of songs prevail and become established and, on the other hand, because new aesthetic-stylistic standards are formed that will accompany the “folk song” to a decisive degree from then on. In this paper, the most important recordings that directly or indirectly refer to Golfo and are included in the gramophone discography are presented and analyzed. We will demonstrate that a part of these recordings concerns the “readings” of folk songs as recorded by popular instrumentalists, professional or amateur, while another part concerns recordings of versions of individual folk songs, as they were processed (harmonies, orchestrations, etc.) by Greek musicians and composers.

The current year 2022 is symbolic as it marks the 100th anniversary of the Smyrna Catastrophe. Th... more The current year 2022 is symbolic as it marks the 100th anniversary of the Smyrna Catastrophe. The term refers to the events of the massacre of the Greek and Armenian population of Smyrna by the Kemalist army, as well as the burning of the city, which occurred in September 1922. This was the end of the Greek-Turkish war of 1919-1922, the flight of the Greek administration from Turkey where it had settled on the west coast of Asia Minor under the Treaty of Sevres , as well as the almost erratic retreat of the Greek army after the collapse of the front and the general expulsion and extermination of much of the Greek and Christian population of Asia Minor.
This destruction began seven days after the withdrawal of the last Greek military unit from Asia Minor and after the entry of the Turkish army, Mustafa Kemal himself and his rioters in the city. The fire first broke out in the Armenian quarter and specifically from the explosion of the Armenian Church of Agios Nikolaos, where women and children had taken refuge and were besieged by the Turks. With the help of a wind favorable to the Turks (blowing against the Turkish quarter) and the gasoline with which the Turks sprinkled the houses, the fire burned the whole city, except the Muslim and Jewish quarters. It lasted from August 31st to September 4th (according to the old calendar). Today this anniversary is actually September 13th, as next year the new calendar was introduced in Greece.
There are innumerable historical sources and related books and papers on the destruction of Smyrna. However, the brilliant Smyrna of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, with its letters, trade and arts, still has many aspects of the previous life there to be illuminated through archives and contemporary documents. The research that unfolds in this text could not even have come to mind as an idea, if the beloved, tireless researcher and author Hugo Strötbaum had not shared with me the documents on which this paper is based.
In 1908, the merchant Paul Blumberg corresponded with the Gramophone Company in London about the gramophone products he wished to be sent to him for sale at his store in Smyrna. This correspondence was miraculously preserved at the EMI Music Archives. Copies of these letters are in the archive of Hugo Strötbaum, who shared them with me for this article. From these documents will emerge ways in which the archival documents and the archival material can be used as sources in the study of the history of music itself, but also of the music industry and discography, which are interrelated with the political and sociological data of the time in which they occur.
According to Jerome F. Weber , the archives of record companies are one of the most valuable primary sources of record information, and catalogues and labels are secondary sources. In fact, this distinction is not so clear: the archives of the companies and record catalogues can reveal different historical and cultural aspects of recordings. Hugo Strötbaum has done admirable research and documentation during the decades he has been working on 78rpm discography. I feel blessed to have worked with him in recent years on various projects.
Record companies have created various types of sources. Some items are still preserved in organized bodies and have been indexed, while many remain undiscovered, hard to find or even lost. The various types of sources, according to Risto Pekka Pennanen, include, among others, newspapers, catalogues, the accounting books which contain details of the recordings that were made, as reported by the recording engineers. Second, the sources include the index cards for each side that can indicate the title and the composer. Some companies also used each artist's recording sheets that contained only the matrix numbers and registration dates. An important source is the correspondence between the sound engineers, the sales representatives, and the heads of the companies.

It was during the late 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries, till the Greek Revolution in 1821, when Ali Pasha played an important role in various regions in Greece and in Albania. His personality became a very popular subject in the Balkans and America and inspired various cultural art forms, such as music, poetry, painting, etc. and the times of this legendary figure led to the creation of a large body of songs and melodies. The article examines through the lenses of musicology and folklore the Alipasalítika songs in the 78rpm discography, which were recorded in various languages and locations by different record companies during the first half of the 20th century.
The most important is the complete 78rpm discography which is presented at the end of the essay; it contains 126 records with Alipasalitika songs recorded in various languages, including all the necessary details of the records (i.e. Record Company/Label, Matrix/Side/Catalog Numbers, Record Size, Title and Artist, Recording Location and Recording Date).

Two Proponents of Monophonic Ecclesiastical Music
The paper examines the unknown correspondence between Fotis Kontoglou and Elias Bogdanopoulos. The two men maintained a special relationship with ecclesiastical byzantine music. Kontoglou was a famous and very talented Greek hagiographer, as well as an author. He was born in 1895 in Aivali, Asia Minor and died in 1965 in Athens after a car accident which happened in 1963. His archive was presented in 2014 by his two grandchildren to the Byzantine Museum in Athens where it is open to everybody for study and research. New documents still enrich Kontoglou’s
archive like the above mentioned correspondence with Elias Bogdanopoulos, a lawyer and hymnographer from Patras. Their letters were written between 1960 and 1963 and their main subject was monophonic byzantine music. Both of them were fanatic opponents of the polyphonic –western type– chanting in Christian Orthodox Greek churches. So, their articles and letters are talking about the harmony of byzantine arts generally and especially of the monophonic –eastern chanting– in Athen’s churches.

This article is the result of my long study of the Greek 78rpm gramophone record industry and related parameters. One of these parameters concerns the marketing of Greek music in the USA in the period 1910 – 1930, as the time when of the new phenomenon of illustrations in record catalogues and advertisements in the Hellenic-American press.
Printed media play an important role in my research into the development of popular culture in America in the early years of the 20th century, when marketing options were rather limited. The recordings of Greek performers and Greek repertoire occupied a prominent place in the two most important newspapers of Hellenism in America, mentioned already.
The rectangular frames and images were designed to catch the eye of the readers. These drawings had to appeal to potential customers, the immigrants, who lived far away from their mother country. In 1921 an important historical anniversary was celebrated: the centenary of the Greek Revolution of 1821, in which a part of present-day Greece freed itself from Ottoman rule. Of course, this special occasion influenced and shaped the themes of the images. Similar images were used to adorn the covers of the record catalogues, which were regularly issued by the companies. Their themes were identical or almost identical to the images used in the ads. Gradually the growing interest in gramophone records also led to a more modern
form of illustrations: Portraits of singers and musicians.
All the material will be interpreted and analysed further, on the basis of anthropological studies, where we can conclude these images as what characterized by what Sherry Ortner, “summarizing symbols” and “elaborating symbols.” They contain, at least subconsciously, highly sacred and emotional meanings for the Greek population in general and the Greek immigrants of the USA in particular.

The technological development of the gramophone offered a revolutionary change in the field of recording. During the first half of the 20th century were recorded for the first time, various types of speech and music. However, the medium of the gramophone captured a representation of reality, recording individual sound "snapshots" in a specific time and place under certain conditions that played a decisive role in the interpretation of Orthodox Church Music, in the midst of the Art of Chanting.
This paper describes the concept of staged authenticity, as the product invited performers to be ideally transferred to the natural environment of church music performance and chanting. The studio involved a different configuration and classification of sounds and bodies in the space with different practices and attitudes. At the same time, however, it invited him to adapt to new transient conditions as a member of a new kind of social network for the needs of recording.
Furthermore, through the recording and then the musicological analysis of specific recordings, the various chanting traditions that are captured through these early recordings will be highlighted. Finally, it will be noted that the orality and personal interpretation of idiomatic elements often exceeds the basic melodic line, since the performers move freely from the text; even when they use it, they usually chant from memory or improvise, thus any attempt to identify the recordings with the already written versions of the repertoire is not often possible.

NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF MUSIC BUCHAREST & INTERNATIONAL MUSICOLOGICAL SOCIETY REGIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE STUDY OF MUSIC OF THE BALKANS, 2019
It has been argued for many years that the peoples of the Greek Peninsula and Balkans form a unit... more It has been argued for many years that the peoples of the Greek Peninsula and Balkans form a unity in various respects. The academician A. Keramopoulos has asserted that one just has to listen to radio broadcasts of folk music in the Balkan countries to understand how the music of the respective peoples is intermingled. The same applies to poetry, architecture and languages in the Balkans. This uniformity of the culture of the Balkan peoples can be attributed to their long-term co-existence with the civilian administration of Rome and Byzantium first and the Turkish sultans afterwards. In the late 18th century, when Greece was still part of the Ottoman Empire, Ali Pasha Tepelenlis (1744-1822) started to reign over the region of Ioannina.
During the years of his reign, the city of Ioannina gained considerable importance, both spiritually and culturally, which has resulted in parallel styles of the arts, such as music: lengthy drawn-out oriental songs of a plaintive nature, influenced by the Turkish oral tradition. The “yanniótika”, the “alipasalítika” and the “kléftika” songs develop with a complex style in a free metre, influenced by the local tradition of Istanbul and that of the Ionian Islands. In the discography of products of the gramophone industry we encounter many recordings of folk songs which go back to the days of Ali Pasha. A large number of these songs refer specifically to this illustre person.
The first recording of such an Ali Pasha song dates back to 1904, but numerous other interesting versions by various performers were recorded ever since (right up to 1943) in several cities. Most of these popular songs the so-called “kléftika” (folk songs of brigands) and in a few cases they have developed into the genre of “manédes”.
This presentation will refer to over fifty examples of "alipasalítika" songs and give details of the recordings. Several colourful record labels will be shown, representative examples of the songs will be played and their content analyzed, illustrated with relevant material, such as record catalogues and advertisements listing those discs.

To investigate and interpret the so-called common Balkan culture effectively a thorough musicological and folkloric analysis is absolutely essential.

Book Reviews by Maria Kapkidi

To investigate and interpret the so-called common Balkan culture effectively a thorough musicological and folkloric analysis is absolutely essential.
