This article examines the discourse on the diet, sexuality and bodily appearance of adolescent girls in Quebec during the 1980s through the magazine Filles d'Aujourd'hui. I explore how the editorial team wrote about female desire and identify how the sexual behaviors encouraged in adolescent girls clashed with those that were expected for boys in the same age group. The magazine's depiction of gender seems to act as a dividing line between freedom and the duty of purity, between a relative absence of recommendations regarding contraception, and the stigmatization of sexuality deemed as "irresponsible". Notably, my analysis evaluates the standards for slimness presented in Filles d'Aujourd'hui to understand its idealized conception of the female body.

The first contingent of Canadian military nurses who served during the First World War were sent overseas in October 1914. They numbered 80 strong-a quantity that was ultimately insufficient to properly sustain the war effort. The Canadian army needed to recruit more nurses, and thus, it called upon Canadian civil nurses to fill its ranks. What qualified a nurse for military service? How were these women recruited by the army and why did they choose to answer the call for service in spite of the dangers of war? The article presents the profile of military nursing candidates and displays, through the oral and written accounts of the nurses themselves, the many motivations that fueled these women in their decision to join the war.

However, very little research has examined the role that the Fed's technology played in shaping the country's monetary operations. This article highlights the importance of nonhuman technology by employing Actor Network Theory to show how the Fed's introduction, in the first decades of the 20 th century, of a telegraph-based system for money transfers, clearings, and settlements expanded the scope and speed of banking activities. It will provide insight on the nature of money in a modern economy and the Fed's operations by illustrating how the telegraph directly influenced the transition of money from a physical commodity, into an abstract number that appears on a bank's spreadsheet.
Abstract - This article aims to analyze some discourses about insanity and criminal responsibility in criminal justice in France during the nineteenth century, proposing a case study: the Jobard Affair. Particularly through " L'Examen médico-légal des faits relatifs au procès criminel de Jobard " of the Lyon Doctor Joseph Arthaud, published in 1852, it is then possible to trace the different medical theories surrounding the criminal responsibility of Antoine-Emmanuel Jobard in the murder of Anaïs Ricard. We will conclude with a critical analysis of monomania to demonstrate how some alienists of the first half of the nineteenth century, including Joseph Arthaud, used this theory in order to acquire more power and notoriety during the trials, becoming the " only real experts. "
Abstract - In order to accomplish his mission of popular education, worker activist Albert Saint-Martin founded the Montreal Workers' University in 1925. Perceived as a marginal institution in the 1920s, the Workers' University presented itself as a threat to social order in the 1930s. The Great Depression revived the fear of communism, thus generating repression and criticism of journalistic, governmental and clerical bodies in its regard. By studying the evolution and the scope of the speech formulated by the Montreal press about the Workers' University, this article seeks to better understand the collective hysteria that affects Western societies during the Great Depression.
Abstract - Given its ominous symptoms and often deadly outcome, osteonecrosis of the jaw, commonly known as "phossy jaw" , stands out as one of the most notorious occupational illnesses documented during the 19th and 20th centuries. Brought about by exposure to white phosphorus, which was mainly used in the manufacturing of matches, the term refers to an aggravated infection in the jaw. This article will shed light upon the use of white phosphorus in Canada, and aims to assess its consequences. It will also focus on the scientific and public knowledge pertaining to the occupational risks engendered by the production of matches in the Canadian industry, and will examine the process which led to its suppression.
Abstract - In the 17th and 18th centuries, Jesuits founded multiple missions in New France to convert Indigenous People, including Wendats. But before instructing those they called " Hurons " , they had to learn their language. French-Wendat dictionaries are the most visible traces of this learning, which implicated Wendats, Jesuits and even some laymen. This article argues that these dictionaries are important to understand the contact between the Indigenous People and the Jesuits. It presents an overview of the dictionaries' history and of the language acquisition process by the missionaries.
Abstract - This article offers an exploratory analysis of one of most important works of the Jesuit Joseph-Papin Archambault, titled les Semaines sociales du Canada (SSC). Founded in 1920, this " travelling university " congregated annually in different cities, where French-Canadian elites would come together to broadcast, discuss and act upon various decisions. Although they sporadically appear in the historiography, mostly when regarding social Catholicism, the SSC have yet to be the focus of in-depth research. This paper examines the profile of the enterprise's members between 1920 and 1958. Despite the fact that Archambault dedicated his work to the establishment of the elite, he never specified the nature of this newly created group. Therefore, using four large classifications (gender, religious or lay nature, geography, and professional profile), we have attempted to better understand its membership. All in all, this has allowed us to brush a detailed portrait of the participants that took part in the SSC's activities under Archambault's presidency. Additionally, our analysis rendered possible a comparison between
