We take a qualitative approach to analyze the discourses and practices applied by managers of long-term care services in relation to hiring men in their organizations. In this analysis we explore how masculinities are mobilized and whether the growing male presence has brought about changes in hiring requirements in terms of gender. The growing number of professionally trained male carers who are willing to work in direct care settings does not, at the moment, seem to be a factor that alters or challenges organizational hiring requirements. We introduce the concept of (im)mobilization of masculinities to illustrate how, although care service organizations’ recruitment practices do mobilize idealized and alternative conceptions of masculinity, hiring men is not their priority. These practices help to reproduce gender inequalities in the long-term care se...

Abstract: In the present article we present the initial results of an ongoing investigation into male participation in the care of adults in situations of dependency. Specifically, we analyse the experiences and perceptions of men professionally employed as paid care workers in organisations that operate in various sectors of the economy, including social services, health, home care and, even, the hotel sector. We believe that given the current collapse in long-term care provision, which forms part of the so-called 'care crisis', there should be greater involvement of men both in the family and professional setting and this is therefore the focus of the present study. Understanding the circumstances by which men enter these jobs, how they experience their work in relation to their gender and the cultural and employment barriers that limit or enable men to enter into paid care work will help strengthen their involvement.

We use data from the ongoing qualitative research we are undertaking in Catalonia (Spain) on men as carers; this text is based on 31semi-structured interviews with male workers in the social care sector. Our results show that the economic crisis has drawn Spanish local men into lower-skilled jobs in the social care sector, thus modifying the stratification process based on gender, class and migration. We find that the ‘glass escalator’ has a very limited effect in social care work, and in consequence, the advantages men enjoy only relate to the ease with which they access such jobs. Finally, we find that men working in the social care sector negotiate their masculinity through the tension between the cultural and class norms that oblige them to have a job and the undervalued or feminized characteristics of their work.

[en] Are caregivers looked for? Strategies for hiring men in paid care jobs for adults Abstract. In this article, we present some results from an investigation into the participation of men in the paid care of dependent adults in Catalonia. In recent years, the increased need for long-term care has led to the growing institutionalisation and recognition of this work. To meet care needs, various services have been provided by social and comercial organisations, but the financial crisis and austerity policies have harmed the redistribution of care provision by reducing public spending and prolonging care by the family. At the same time, wide spread unemployment caused by the financial crisis has increased the number of male carers, although they are still a minority. We analyse the strategies used by organisations to recruit men and the extent to which this situation could be the result of social policies designed to change (or not) the gender balance in these types of job. Our methodology is based on the qualitative analysis of interviews with care managers and observations in different public and private services.

The rising numbers of men in this field produce new gender dynamics. We analyze the discourse and practice of male and female caregivers, managers and beneficiaries of home-care services, to shed light on the changes and continuities in traditional models of gender, as well as on the opportunities and obstacles men face in this field.

Understanding the circumstances by which men enter these jobs, how they experience their work in relation to their gender and the cultural and employment barriers that limit or enable men to enter into paid care work will help strengthen their involvement.
which they access such jobs. Finally, we find that men working in the social care sector negotiate their masculinity through the tension between the cultural and class norms that oblige them to have a job and the undervalued or feminized characteristics of their work.
