As a working paper for my thesis volume on the CLE of Caesarea, I delved into the history of Cherchell studies mainly from an epigraphic point of view, but also from an archaeological one. The troubled history of Cherchell studies and the outcomes of international projects give hope for a 'cultural marriage' approach between the two shores of the Mediterranean, and for cooperation between Europe and the Maghreb.

This article aims to reflect on the apparitores’ recruitment systems, analyzing the sources in detail and comparing the various hypotheses formulated so far, and on the form of interaction of different systems, at urban, provincial, and municipal level. Some elements of the epigraphic habit that could shed light on the mechanism of election of the apparitores are also investigated, proposing to interpret the formula apparitor illius/illi and the nude dicti as apparitores delati directly by public offices. An unpublished inscription of a lictor is published in the appendix.

Abstract · Ancient inscriptions in the Castle of Santa Severa (Lazio) · In the open areas and courtyards of the Castle of Santa Severa (Santa Marinella, Province of Rome) thirteen ancient inscriptions (twelve in Latin and one in Greek) are preserved, mostly fragmentary. All of them are funerary texts, with the exception of one brick stamp. They are all unpublished except for one of them, whose history is closely related to the Ordine di Santo Spirito, which owned the Castle from 1482 to 1980. So far neglected by scholars, these inscriptions are here published for the first time. The only edited text was thought to be lost until today and has now been “rediscovered”.

This paper proposes a general reflection on the the beginning of the dissemination of Latin poetic epitaphs in North Africa, highlighting the literary themes used, the quoted poets, the legal status of the dedicators and the dedicatees, the relationship with the earlier Punic culture, and, where possible, the identification of epigraphic workshops. In addition, an investigation is conducted into the dating of inscriptions, in which a poetic intent can be discerned, loosely set by previous bibliography in the 1st century AD, with the aim of clarifying or rediscussing their dating.
