Rescue archaeological interventions have been recently carried out in three sites, named SE-K, SE-B and Jardín de Alá, in the Campo de Tejada area. In all of them, located next to each other in the municipalities of Salteras and Gerena (province of Sevilla -SW Spain-), graves have been documented, corresponding, in general, to th...

The f irst results of the research project Los Paisajes del Guadiamar are presented in this paper, paying special attention to archaeometallurgical aspects. This project has been going on since 2010, located in the mid-valley of the River Guadiamar (central-western area of the province of Seville) and backed by the “Fundación Focus-Abengoa”. Although not all the archaeo- logical and analytical ...

We present the results of the archaeological excavation carried out at the Solana del Bepo mine that have allowed us to contextualise the surface finds made in the 1940s. It had been possible to locate the prehistoric workings and to characterise the mined ores by pXRF elemental, -XRF and LIA analyses. The mining implements found in the excavation and the earlier surface finds were typologically described and classified. To precise the chronology a set of samples were radiocarbon dated. The results confirm that Solana del Bepo was an active copper mine at least throughout the first half of the second millennium cal BCE, that is the Early/Middle Bronze Age of northeast of the Iberian Peninsula. The studies carried out there and in other mines in the county of Priorat (province of Tarragona) allow us to advance some considerations regarding the nature of the exploitation of local copper ore, its chronology and the regional dispersion of the metal obtained.

Several settlement networks from the Iberian Copper Age period are located alongside the Guadiana River (Iberian Peninsula) – i.e. Perdigoes, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Portugal (Dias et al.2005; Valera 2006), or Tierra de Barros, Badajoz, Spain (Hurtado 1995,1999). In this context, a clear relation has been found between the sites in terms of spatial organization (hierarchical, where La Pijotilla could be considered as a central place in a core-periphery system), a restricted stylistic distribution of the so-called Guadiana ‘eyed idol’ figurines (Hurtado 2008), or the distribution of bone based inlayed Bell Beaker pottery (Hurtado and Odriozola 2008; Odriozola in press).

This very full study of Prehistoric (Neolithic-Chalcolithic transition, Chalcolithic, Middle Bronze Age, Pre-Orientalizing Late Bronze Age, Orientalizing) mining and metallurgy in the south west Iberian Peninsula, details sites from Cerro Jesus in the east to Joao Marques in the west. The book offers a rare monograph in English on this important aspect of metals and material culture. The author surveys and analyses hundreds of Prehistoric era sites and finds, and the result is a 400-page work in seven parts. The chapter headings include Mining-metallurgical surveys; Analytical methods; Geological background and mineral resources; Archaeological register and analysis: Bases for the archaeo-metallurgical investigation; Isotopic characterisation of the south west Iberian peninsula; Mining and metallurgical technology; Evaluation and dynamics of mining and metallurgy during the recent prehistory in the south west Iberian peninsula. The figures include 55 lead isotope plots and 41 metallographs. 6 maps, 148 figures, plans, drawings and illustrations; 41 b/w photographs; 55 tables; 23-page bibliography.

Iberian ‘warrior’ stelae have captured the imagination of researchers and the public for more than a century. Traditionally, stelae were considered ‘de-contextualised’ monuments, and research typically focused on the study of their iconography, paying little or no attention to their immediate contexts. As a result, despite the large number of these stelae known to date (c. 140) and the ample body of literature that has dealt with them, fundamental questions remain unanswered. This paper aims to demonstrate the potential of a multidisciplinary and contextual approach to push forward the research agenda on these monuments through a case study. Firstly, we introduce the Mirasiviene stela and the methods deployed for its investigation, which include a variety of digital imaging techniques, petrography, pXRF, intensive survey and multiscalar spatial analysis. Secondly, we discuss the results in relation to three main topics: stela biography, social practices and landscape context. Compar...

The Holocene record of Guadalquivir estuary near Seville (Southern Spain). Geoarchaeological approach: We study the sedimentary internal area filling of Guadalquivir estuary, near Seville. The sediment samples come from two cores drilled in San Fernando Street, located to the south of the historical town. They are separated about 200 m and they have deepened something more than 18 m, reaching the geologic formation of Margas Azules (late Miocene). Methodologically, we used sedimentology, palynology (twenty-two samples distributed between 2 m and 12.35 m of depth) and radiocarbon data (six samples spread between 4 m and 12 m of depth), as well as the analysis of the archaeological record. All it allows to establish a palaeogeographic sequence characterised by three great phases: marine transgression episode (Lower-middle Holocene vertical aggradation); alluvial episode with final progressive human influence (Middle-recent Holocene lateral progradation); and urban occupation episode w...
