The German-Spanish joint project at Los Castillejos de Alcorrín (Manilva, Málaga), together with emergency excavations and prospections, has supplied new information about the importance of the coastal region east of Gibraltar. There has emerged the image of an area of contact between maritime and mainland cultures, between locals and foreigners, whose dynamic evolution is connected, by a significant measure, to the exploitation of hitherto unknown, rich ore deposits in the region. The indigenous fortress of Alcorrín, which extended over more than 11 hectares, founded at the turn of the 9th to the 8th centuries B.C., and abandoned at the beginning of the 7th century, provides an impressive example of the effects of early Phoenician contacts. These contacts contributed to the formation of a concentration of power, to the development of new forms of communication, such as writing script, and to the introduction of formerly unknown technologies, forms of economy, trade, and habitation. Hill settlements of the 2nd millenium B.C. were situated to overlook connection routes and facilitate exchange. Thus began the settlement of the immediate hinterland, as well as the exploitation of local metal resources. Moreover, evidence of eastern mediterranean contacts is to be found here. At the end of the 9th century B.C., the foundation of a settlement near Casa Montilla, then at the mouth of the river Guadiaro, established a link to the maritime routes of commerce. The site of the harbour is only 5 km (as the crow flies) from Los Castillejos de Alcorrín, and the archaeological findings suggest that they stood in direct relation with each other. In the course of the 8th century, the hub turned into an import place into local regions. Phoenician influences extended deeply into the hinterland by way of the connection route which followed the course of the Guadiaro, and caused changes in the local environment. The abandonment of Los Castillejos de Alcorrín falls in a time of change: on the one hand, the Phoenician settlements in the South of the Iberian Peninsula experience population growth, and, on the other hand, fortresses are being erected in the indigenous hinterland. The causes that triggered this development cannot be determined as yet. The history of settlement of the region east of Gibraltar has its very own characteristics. Its study and documentation is to provide important information about a very topical issue on Archaeometallurgy of the southern Iberian Peninsula during the Bronze Age: the scale of production. To this end there have been performed numerous analyses of slags and fragments of vessels used in the reduction of copper ores and melting metal. Technological data obtained along with the quantification of archaeometallurgical material from the whole Penalosa site allow us to conclude the importance of the scale of production of copper in the area, with a major focus on Sierra Morena.

This paper focuses on the characterization of technological processes used for producing copper, ... more This paper focuses on the characterization of technological processes used for producing copper, tin-bronze and silver in the Prehistory and Protohistory of the Iberian Peninsula. To this purpose, slags and slaggy materials have been analysed by optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS). In particular, the results obtained allow us to characterize the main technological features for smelting copper ores since the 3rd millennium BCE, a process that was performed in simple fire structures by using a non-slagging process. Regarding tin-bronze, the analytical data suggest that prehistoric bronzes were obtained by co-smelting copper and tin oxidic ores or by cementation of copper with cassiterite. Finally, some metallurgical debris dated to the Phoenician time, in the early 1st millennium BCE, points to the extraction of silver from argentiferous copper ores employing a method similar to the 15th century liquation process. This is a unique discovery up to now as this type of materials is unknown in any other Mediterranean region settled by the Phoenicians.

The settlement and the necropolis of El Calvari (El Molar, Tarragona), dated between the end of the Late
Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age, provided various copper-based objects and melting wastes. The
archaeological site is located in a mining district, the Molar-Bellmunt-Falset (MBF) area, which presents rich
deposits mainly of non-argentiferous lead and copper. Lead isotope analyses performed on some lead-based
materials recovered from El Calvari show that these mines were already being exploited at this time. However,
lead isotope analyses of the copper-based metals indicate that neither the ones from the site nor those from
the necropolis can be related to local mineral resources. Indeed, a great part of these items originates from
the Linares mines (Jaén) and, in a smaller part, from mines in the Almería province.
In this paper we will discuss arguments supporting the possibility of import of ingots or of finished objects as
part of the Phoenician trade in northeastern Iberia.

The archaeological site, situated at the southwest edge of the Qattārah oasis, has been excavated... more The archaeological site, situated at the southwest edge of the Qattārah oasis, has been excavated recentl y by the Abu Dhabi Authorit y for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) as par t of a redevelopment project of the area to create the Qattārah Communit y Ar t Centre on the rebuilt str uctures of the Bayt Bin 'Ātī al-Darmakī complex. These excavations revealed that Bayt Bin 'Ātī had a long occupational sequence, with a deep stratigraphy that covers from the Iron Age until the Late Islamic period. No monumental str uctures have been unear thed at the site so far. The main archaeological evidence found is constituted by pits, postholes and irrigation ditches associated to agricultural and industrial installations. S ince the first occupation phase of the site, agriculture seemed to be the main economic activit y at the site but, during the Iron Age II (aprox. 1100-600 BC), copper smelting also played an impor tant role, as suggested by the find of more than 50 kg of metallurgical residues, such as slags, furnace walls, fragments of metallurgical vessels and some metal lumps. This debris was spread on a 10 cm-thick layer in the southeast corner of the S outhern Baulk, which is located between the ar ts workshop area and the semi-subterranean energ y centre of the complex. No metallurgical str uctures or furnaces had been identified in the area. In this paper, we present the preliminar y results of the anal ytical study of a small selection of this copper production debris, namel y two fragments of tap slags, a fragment of a ceramic cr ucible and a large tongue-shaped metal lump. These samples have been examined by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and the results obtained indicate that sulphidic ores were exploited to produce copper. This kind of mineral deposits is commonl y found in ophiolite rock, mined on a vast scale in the al-Hajar Mountains since the Bronz e Age. Bayt Bin 'Ātī finds point at the continuation of those copper mining activities during the Iron Age, but onl y a more in-depth study of the metallurgical debris will allow us to obtain a better understanding of the patterns of ore exploitation and metal production on the territor y during the Iron Age. In fact, it is wor th mentioning that there are no mines known so far in the area of the Qattārah oasis. The c losest mine is Wādī J izzī in Oman, situated at approximatel y 60 km from Bayt Bin 'Ātī. The reason why they were transpor ting minerals instead of producing metals c loser to the mining area is still unknown. The need for fuel and water could have been impor tant factors but a broader study of the region is needed to shed light on this topic. A b s t r a c t

Little, however, is known about copper production during the 1st millennium BC, despite its unquestionable importance (Kassianidou 2012b; 2016). This chapter offers a comprehensive study of the chaîne opératoire of copper smelting technology in this period as practiced at Almyras, the only fully excavated Iron Age smelting workshop known so far in Cyprus. The metallurgical remains presented in this chapter show that the entire production sequence from the smelting of sulphidic ore to metal was carried out at the Almyras workshop. According to the archaeological evidence available, it was a small-scale copper production site where no evidence for metal refining or manufacture of finished objects has been documented; raw impure copper seems to be the final product of the metallurgical process carried out at Almyras.

The investigation of the ancient town and temples of Elephantine carried out by the German Archae... more The investigation of the ancient town and temples of Elephantine carried out by the German Archaeological Institute Cairo (DAI) in cooperation with the Swiss Institute for Egyptian Building Archaeology (Swiss Institute) since 1969 was continued from October 13th, 2015 to May 31st, 2016. In the settlement the DAI continued its archaeometric project “Realities of Life” in the ancient northwestern town (section 2). Between autumn 2015 and summer 2016, two seasons of excavation and one study season dedicated to the finds were conducted. The Swiss Institute resumed the excavation of a building to the south of the sanctuary of Heqaib in the framework of its study of the New Kingdom town of the island. In the Khnum temple area work concentrated on various aspects of the late temple, its precinct and its furnishings (section 3). In addition, several projects were conducted aimed at the study of objects and object groups. The DAI completed the investigation of the relief blocks from the New Kingdom temple of Khnum (section 4). During the clearance of debris a stela of Senwosret III was found (section 5). The study of the decoration of the Greco-Roman temples of Elephantine was continued (section 6). The Swiss Institute continued the conservation and rebuilding of the temple of Osiris Nesmeti (section 7). In cooperation with the IFAO the DAI conducted a project on the context and objects of the early periods of the history of Elephantine through functional settlement analysis (section 8) and a project on flint objects and their functional analysis (section 9). In addition the DAI, in cooperation with the Aswan inspectorate and the Nubian Museum, made major efforts this season to improve the relationship between the archaeologists and the inhabitants of the area of Aswan and to provide training for our local colleagues in archaeological fieldwork and public relations (section 10–11).

The settlement and the necropolis of El Calvari (El Molar, Tarragona), dated between the end of the LateBronze Age and the Early Iron Age, provided various copper-based objects and melting wastes. The archaeological site is located in a mining district, the Molar-Bellmunt-Falset (MBF) area, which presents rich deposits mainly of non-argentiferous lead and copper. Lead isotope analyses performed on some lead-based materials recovered from El Calvari show that these mines were already being exploited at this time. However, lead isotope analyses of the copper-based metals indicate that neither the ones from the site nor those from the necropolis can be related to local mineral resources. Indeed, a great part of these items originates from the Linares mines (Jaén) and, in a smaller part, from mines in the Almería province. In this paper we will discuss arguments supporting the possibility of import of ingots or of finished objects as part of the Phoenician trade in northeastern Iberia.
