This book explores several issues concerning this broad and complex domain. Some papers address education and scholarship (M. Gioseffi, M. Squillante, D. Paniagua, L. Pirovano, L. Cristante), and the way in which late Antiquity contemplated aspects of contemporary culture (G. Polara). Others are concerned with the history of the transmission of particular authors in the early medieval period: Pliny (M. D. Reeve), Ps.-Senecan De moribus (V. von Büren), Sisebut (P. F. Alberto), Isidore’s Histories (R. Furtado), Isidore’s De differentiis II in Ermenrich of Ellwagen (A. Andrés Sanz). Early medieval glossaries produced in Spain are explored in their relationship with the Liber Glossarum (Codoñer), and the presence of grammatical treatises in the monastery of Alcobaça, in central Portugal, is revisited in final essay (A. Nascimento). As a whole, this collection of studies casts new light on all these issues and brings forward original pieces of information.

IX, 2, 1), Nonius Marcellus (p. 195 M = p. 286 L; p. 222 M = p. 328 L) and Augustine of Hippo (haer. praef. 5) about Cornelius Celsus’ style and elegance to determine whether they are consistent or -as it is usually said- they show a change of perception over time.

The text, written at the end of the 4th or in the 5th century ce for the author’s son, Vergilianus, was likely intended to be used at school as an instrument providing basic information about the collected toponyms and ethnonyms. Despite the occasional mistakes in the text, Sequester’s repertoire represent a fine instance of school culture in Western Late Antiquity. The work was much appreciated by Italian humanists, which explains that it was copied in nearly 50 recentiores manuscripts; all of them, however, descend from a second-half of the 9th century manuscript (Vat. Lat. 4929).

Young scholars in particular will be encouraged to present case-studies and share the editorial problems and methodological challenges that they had to face in order to fulfil their research or critical editions, in dialogue with more experienced scholars. As in the previous workshop, the centre of interest will be troublesome issues, such as, for example:-'open' or 'fluid' texts-Latin texts translated from another language, like Greek, or bilingual texts-texts with variants by the author or in multiple recensions-texts with linguistic instability-texts transmitted by a huge number of manuscripts-collections of extracts-texts with a relevant indirect tradition.
