ENGLISH VERSION - The renowned Saibante-Hamilton 390 manuscript, held in the Staatsbibliothek of Berlin and here presented for the first time in a critical edition, has sparked the interest of the greatest philologists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Presumably produced in Treviso in the early 1280s, it preserves a florilegium of Latin and vernacular texts of extraordinary importance: it is “the first Italian manuscript organized as a coherent collection, and the vernacular texts contained in it represent the most ancient corpus of didactic-moralizing works of northern Italy. The copious illuminations of the codex are in a constant dialogue with the texts and play not only a decorative role, but also an important interpretive one”(from the Avvertenza, p. V).
This volume presents, for the first time, the integral critical edition of a monument of the Italian Origins, accompanied by a multi-disciplinary study that traces the ancient and modern history of the codex, bringing out its specificities, but also its literary, artistic and historical-cultural qualities. The complete edition, which affords access to the object in its materiality, also allows, on the one hand, the full comprehension of the texts that compose it, examined in their peculiar textual and linguistic stratification; on the other, it gives the opportunity to investigate the relationship between the texts and illuminations that complement them. Such an apparent and explicit relationship makes the manuscript a unique artifact in the history of book production of the first centuries of Italian (and European) literature.
The introductory notes and the commentaries to each text, together with the analytical form list (in the vernacular and in Latin) of all the texts offer an updated and organized exegetical system; the codicological and art historical analysis, the investigation on the para-texts and the illustrative system, which are integrated in the exegetical section, propose a new and effective paradigm for the study of the great literary manuscripts of the Middle Ages.

The Romanesque decoration of the church of San Tommaso in Acquanegra sul Chiese (Mantua, Lombardy... more The Romanesque decoration of the church of San Tommaso in Acquanegra sul Chiese (Mantua, Lombardy), formerly a Benedictine abbey church and now a parish church, is the result of a single project that can be attributed to the long-lived and enigmatic Abbot Peter (chronicled in 1101, 1119 and 1130). According to its architectural features (Piva in this volume, Architecture) and the archaeological evidence (Gallina, Breda in this volume), the church was built around the middle of the eleventh century, or slightly later, as an aisled basilica with a transept, a deep presbytery raised on a crypt-oratory, and three apses. It was done in brickwork and covered with a wooden roof.
At the beginning of the twelfth century Abbot Peter had the nave and the presbytery raised (by 2.20 metres) and the clerestory windows enlarged, in order to considerably increase the brightness as well as the surface area on which an impressive painted cycle would unfold, modestly preserved today and split by late Renaissance vaults. The decoration was executed in two stages (first the presbytery, then the nave) by different painters, who may have been hired by a single workshop, and was completed soon after by a figurative mosaic pavement (Vaccaro in this volume). The paintings and mosaics were so closely connected to the architecture as to allow us speak of a visual device, involved in the dynamics of the monastic liturgical space.

The article examines and publishes some Latin versions of the legend of St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki. The analysis of the Latin dossier shows that, alongside the translation by Anastasius, there is another version of the first Greek passio, spread in Northern Italy at least since the 13th century (BHL 2124d, whose two witnesses are published here for the first time). Of the second Greek form there existed an initial translation, made in Byzantine territory in the 11th century, from which derive both the form BHL 2124 (published here on the basis of the six witnesses found), and BHL 2125 (of which the editio princeps is given from the only witness). The northern version is the primary source for the double entry on Demetrius (in turn published here) of the Legendae de sanctis by Pietro Calò, who integrated it with the form BHL 2124; from that of Calò, Pietro Nadal drew the entry for his Catalogus sanctorum, also using a different witness of BHL 2124.
presents a first overall glance on this corpus of minor and major revisions, and a setting of the relations among the manuscripts affected by the complicated and stratified reworking by John.
Dominican hagiographical collections usually do not welcome Brendan’s legend,
because of either its extravagances and their preference for more universal saints, especially after the reform of the Order’s officium in the middle of the XIIIth century.
Nevertheless, there is one exception, the Liber epilogorum by Bartholomew of Trento,
including a very short adbreviatio from the Navigatio Brendani. Thanks to his particular
choice, two more legendaries using Batholomew as a source could inherit Brendan’s
history: the Legendae de sanctis by Peter Calò (source in turn for Peter Nadal’s Catalogus sanctorum), and an anonymous collection appearing in three manuscripts of the XIVth and XVth century, all of them from the southern Germanophone area. This
paper retraces the transmission of the adbreviatio from Bartholomew to Calò, Nadal and the Transalpine legendary, with a critical edition of every version and an examination of their peculiar variations.
Origen is the most authoritative Greek exegete in the Latin West and the only one conditioning, in particular, the interpretation of the Song of Songs; not even the experience of literal exegesis practiced in Canterbury by Theodore and Hadrian seems to have challenged the dominance of his hermeneutical approach. All medieval commentators are Origen’s heirs, sometimes directly, often with the mediation of other exegetes inspired by him, in a web of dependencies that scholars are not always able to distinguish exactly. Furthermore, Latin readers tend to simplify his thought and reduce his contents to a quite basic scheme.
