Beyond fake news, misinformation appears as a response to reality. Even the most dramatic events are subject to an online jury based on interpretative polarisation. This research analyses the case of the murder of Samuel Luiz, after a group aggression in A Coruña, Spain, during the secrecy of investigations. With a mixed-method approach we analyse media coverage (N1 = 159), public conversation on Twitter (N2 = 757,389), information disorders and the role of fact-checkers. The lack of information and the publication of some details fuelled a public conversation with ideological and political traits. The media coverage generated frames in which users position themselves for ideological and political reasons. The polarised conversation on Twitter was dominated by non-journalistic actors, with an important influence of the political position. The information disorders show that the noise generated by public discussion completes the story with false, misleading and biased content. Fact-checkers intervened, but their diffusion is limited compared to the volume of the debate on social networks.

Since interactive narrative journalism is one of the trends of digital journalism, it is necessary to approach the offer of services that facilitate the journalistic creation of dynamic and interactive journalistic contents. The main objective is to analyze web programs and applications for the creation and publication of interactive digital narratives. Based on the PRISMA systematic review methodology, a total of 15 programs and web applications were identified after reading 28 articles and examination of 54 webpages. Five are open-source applications, which invite the community to continue developing improvements that make these tools innovative and adaptable to future changes. Our study reveals the are highly valued functionalities, such as the capacity for data analysis and teamwork, among others that allow the integration of 360° multimedia, the management of the interaction map, the preview in different output formats, such as tablet or mobile. However, there is a lack of journalistic roles in these tools that let them coordinate and optimise the publication process to produce the final news.

The results reveal that 6,304 (77.53%) Spanish municipalities can be considered news deserts, inhabited by 11.6 million people, 24.51% of the country’s total population. In addition, another 523 municipalities are at risk of becoming news deserts. In the regions with the largest number of news deserts, there is a clear concentration of media in the main capitals and a weak ecosystem of local and hyperlocal media. Depopulation is the main risk factor in the loss of media and news coverage in local communities.

Not only is this kind of media here to stay, but they have transitioned from being a feature of the avant-garde to occupying a central space in the digital ecosystem. Despite the diversity of models, difficulties in articulating business models that ensure sustainability, and their lack of financial muscle, native media have opened up renewed options for digital journalism in both the present and the future. By analyzing the current media landscape and a study of the main trends, carried out using a review of the published scientific literature and an analysis of cases from the last five years, this paper explores the horizons of the “new wave” of digital native media that will face the challenges of the second half of this third decade of the millennium. Of course, the future has not yet been written: digital media will have to build from the native space, observing emerging trends, modern technologies, and without giving up on providing quality digital journalism that is based in truthfulness, transparency, the involvement of users and the set of actions that serve the public interest.

Despite the influence that legacy media have exerted on the models of many digital media, the efforts they have made to find their own way in the digital communication ecosystem have resulted in the introduction of new practices and strategies that have fuelled renewed debates on journalistic frontiers. The aim of this paper is to review the birth, evolution and current landscape of digital native media with special attention given to research in this field. This is an object of study with its own and differential characteristics in relation to legacy media, which attracts the focus of more and more digital communication researchers every day. To offer a current assessment of such research, a systematized review of articles published in scientific journals included in the Web of Science and Scopus databases was carried out. The results show that the conceptualization of digital native media, their mapping in media ecosystems and comparison with legacy media, the study of their typology and characteristics, research on their economic and organizational models, the analysis of their content, and their relationship with audiences are among the main objects of research. These media constitute a fundamental sector in the current media ecosystem, which will require multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives in their research to face the challenges of digital media, digital native media and digital journalism. Although we are not always aware of it, they sometimes usurp the identity of other social actors. The main purpose of this article is to address the meta-research on the field of artificial intelligence and communication from a holistic perspective that allows us to analyze the state of academic research, as well as the possible effects on these areas and on the democratic system. To this end, we carried out a systematized review of recent literature using quantitative and qualitative approaches. The subject analyzed is changing and novel: it includes the impact and interaction of algorithms, bots, automated processes, and artificial intelligence mechanisms in journalism and communication, as well as their effects on democracy. The results show expanding scientific production, mostly in English, based on theoretical discussion or focused on the perception of communication professionals. The object of study is centered mostly on journalism and democracy, and to a lesser degree on ethics or education. Studies indicate great interest in the effects of the use of algorithms on journalism and democracy, but the answers are still uncertain and the challenges for the coming years are significant.

News media are tasked with remaining relevant to these young audiences and are trying to reach the places where they are digitally most active. By combining quantitative and qualitative methods, two perspectives were analyzed in this study. The first was the news use on social media of young Spanish, French, and British people (N = 1,528) aged 18-25. The second was the content dissemination strategies implemented within social networking sites by the 30 most consumed media in these European countries. The results confirm the pre-eminence of social media as channels of information and as alternatives to traditional media, with distributed, incidental consumption throughout the day. Meanwhile, the news media are implementing strategies to get integrated into the platforms that most engage new audiences.

This article aims to present the foundations of the relationship between journalism and politics today, along with future trends. Methodology: It does so through a study developed in February 2020–February 2021 in Spain based on methodological triangulation that includes, in addition to the literature review, a survey of journalists, a survey of citizens and a panel of experts with researchers in the area. Discussion: The results confirm journalists as a filter between society and politics, although the citizens are critical. Conclusions: Some dangerous trends for democracy are revealed: the choice of media agenda items in political parties, low audience participation, the concealment of the importance of algorithms and digital platforms, and the high automation of information to influence public opinion and generate disinformation.

The search for new ways to tell stories is driven by technology and has given rise to new –and not so new– forms of expression. The initial enthusiasm has dissipated over the years, so the uncertainty of the future of immersive journalism justifies the study of the most potential ways of using this technology in journalism. This research was carried out in Finland and Spain, and it is based on a textual narrative analysis and a reception study comparing the online article and 360º video versions of the report Fukushima: Contaminated Lives from El país. The results identify the affordances of both formats and confirm that immersive journalism has the capacity to generate a greater emotional effect based on a greater perception of presence, realism and involvement, also having a positive impact on increasing interest and changing opinions on related topics.

Interactive nonfiction narratives have transformed the processes of producing, distributing and showing documentaries, and especially the processes involved in how the viewer relates to the text. One of these new media forms of narrative expression is “interactive documentary”. In this work, first, we explore the evolution of the documentary genre as an expression form, then we analyse the current state of development of the interactive documentary. Second, we analyse five representative projects from different critical perspectives: production, interface, content and modalities of representation. Finally, we outline a set of issues that emerged from the analysis performed that need to be resolved.

Within the field of interactive non-fiction digital narratives, we have carried out a research through journalistic main media and informative innovation awards to develop a list of significant features from 2014 and 2015. In a global analysis, we identified a heterogeneous production where features made from a template coexist with more innovative and tailor-made features. In these cases, there is a greater transfer of control to the user and a more sophisticated and surrounding design, which provides more immersive and personalized experiences.

On the one hand, it is the legacy of more than a century and a half that offers multiple evidence of its social utility for receiving trustworthy news, generating knowledge, and achieving a better operation of plural and democratic societies. On the other hand, a loss of credibility, difficulties to show their contribution within a context dominated by confusion and unfounded rumours, and the multiplication of problems to guarantee sustainability of media investing in quality journalistic projects. But journalism is still alive and it remains at the heart of social debates within the present turbulent context. In order to guarantee its continuity in the digital era, characterized by disruptive changes and a communication metamorphosis in various stages, journalism is looking for its reinvention without sacrificing the essentials: telling, explaining and interpreting what is happening in society, using techniques and tools to guarantee veracity.

In the third millennium a new phase starts, with the characteristics of the complexity of the network society and the current technologies as actors in this turn. The definitive rupture of the sequential story has led to experimentation with narrative models based on hypertextuality, multimedia and interactivity. Evolution has been strongly dependant and affected by the past, without major upheavals in the fundamental, although driven by some disruptive dimensions in communication processes. The appearance of journalistic narratives has been guided in these last two decades by the combination of creativity and innovation in an increasingly mobile, convergent and transmedia context. The result is an expansion of models with unequal uses and consumption but enriching the narrative outlook.

Many academics, professional organisations and social and political actors stand by this statement. But it is not enough. This is not about beliefs, desires or good intentions. The debates about the future of journalism, which are very necessary and appropriate in these times of change, fuel pronouncements in favour of finding answers to the threats to the information activity. Journalism belongs to society, is embedded in society and therefore it is necessary that society continues to play a role. For this reason, in addition to making pronouncements, it is necessary to take steps that reinforce frameworks suitable for the practice of good journalism in a society where the media hold themselves accountable and establish alliances with citizens.

---------------- ABSTRACT: In recent years the way we produce new media has changed dramatically. Interactive nonfiction narratives have transformed the processes of producing, distributing and showing documentaries, and especially the processes involved in how the viewer relates to the text. One of these new media forms of narrative expression is “interactive documentary”. This work presents five representative projects developed between 2010 and 2014: Out My Window (Katerina Cizek; National Film Board of Canada, 2010), Insitu (Antoine Viviani; Arte, Providences, 2011), Alma, A Tale of Violence (Miquel Dewever-Plana, Isabelle Fougère; Arte, Upian, Agence VU, 2012), A Short History of the Highrise (Katerina Cizek; NFB, 2013) and The And (Topaz Adizes; The Skin Deep, 2014). First, we explore the evolution of the documentary genre as an expression form, then we analyse the current state of development of the interactive documentary. Second, we will analize the five selected projects from different critical perspectives: production, interface, content and modalities of representation. Finally, we outline a set of issues that emerged from the analysis performed that need to be resolved.

Introduction: Innovation has not only modified routines and professional profiles, but also raises questions about public legitimacy and the institutional character of journalism as a political actor with the emergence of new actors, such as digital platforms and their algorithms, and the reconfiguration of the communicative space.
