Alfonso Santarpia is a Professor of Clinical Psychology and Director of the LEAS (Experiential Laboratory on Arts and Spirituality) at the University of Sherbrooke, Canada.
As a scientific-artistic designer, he has developed several protocols—SADUPA, SANTEL, and ABLASMI—blending art and science to explore the therapeutic effects of artistic practices such as poetry, dance, and clowning in crises like bereavement and serious illnesses. His research, grounded in a humanistic and existential approach, also examines the effects of spiritual practices (such as shamanism or the experience of sublime Awe) and body metaphors, in different audiences: individuals in end-of-life care, those in cancer remission, persons with schizophrenic traits, and spectators of artistic performances. These interventions help explore the therapeutic potential of art and spirituality to transform existential experiences. Additionally, he investigates the psychological dynamics of narcissistic relationships, focusing on transformation and growth.
Recently, he received funding from the FRQSC to create a documentary that explores the role of artistic practices in cancer remission, aiming to further highlight the impact of art in fostering resilience and emotional recovery. Currently, he is interested in the poetic co-creation between artificial intelligence (ChatGPT) and television series (such as Dexter) to explore existential crises and narcissistic wounds.
In the field of studying the psychological effects of performances on audiences, he has collaborated with Andrée Martin, choreographer and professor, on her immersive Dhrupad-based dance installation, Kalos, eîdos, skopeîn, which is designed to elicit feelings of awe in spectators (see specific paper on this project).
He has published numerous scientific articles and a book, now in its second edition with Dunod, titled Introduction to Humanistic Psychotherapies. For details of his publications, please refer to his academic webpage https://www.usherbrooke.ca/recherche/fr/specialistes/details/alfonso.santarpia/

(AI), the dialog between humans and AI is no longer merely
functional but can be a profound means of reflection and
psychological growth, especially when artistic approaches, such
as poetry, are included. AI has the potential to generate poetic
responses that deeply resonate with human experience,
facilitating the expression of emotions, promoting psychological
well-being, and encouraging personal reflection. This article
describes a poetic exchange over a seven-day period between
the author and ChatGPT, personified as the “Voice from
Elsewhere,” that explores an existential crisis. After each
exchange, the results were analyzed from a Jungian perspective
to highlight connections to symbols and archetypes that could
be used in Poetry Therapy or other therapeutic environments.
The results indicate that ChatGPT has the capacity to create
poems related to existential questions which could open the way
for new and enriching dialogs, capable of potentially supporting
psychotherapeutic work. P

Objective: This qualitative study aims to describe the revitalising effects of a Dance Movement Therapy protocol in a patient in remission of breast cancer, Mrs Magnolia (66 years old). Material and
methods: Madame Magnolia participated in a Dance Movement Therapy workshop composed of ten different stages of experience. We first used the T-LAB Plus 2018 software (version 4.0.2.7) for the calculation of lemmatised word associations (co-occurrences), following an interpretation of her narrative, according to the approach of Carl Gustav Jung and Rollo May. Results: Mrs Magnolia's narrative can be organised into five categories of bodily experiences evoking the activation of the archetype of Puer Aeternus or Divine Child. More specifically, we have identified: « The effort and the courage to open oneself to the world and leap into it », « Reconnect with the body and to feel its awakening », « Putting the disease on pause and experiencing freedom », «The pleasure of dancing in connection with a feeling of being accepted », « The pleasure of dancing in connection with the nostalgic evocation of a distant time ». Conclusion: We believe that "the psychic work with Dance Movement Therapy can not only distance the patient from the weight of the disease (symptoms, complaints, genes and physical pains), but also generate revitalizing body experiences (sensation of physical freedom, psycho-corporeal event, feelings of openness to the world) and a rich symbolic narrative.

● les origines de la psychothérapie humaniste ;
● le débat interne à la psychothérapie humaniste qui s’établit entre deux visions contradictoires de l’humain : l’une positive et l’autre, tragique/existentielle ;
● les apports des recherches sur la « cognition incarnée » (embodied cognition) dans des domaines allant de la motricité à l’émotion ;
(EMDR, cohérence cardiaque, etc.) ;
● les approches centrées sur les émotions : Gestalt-thérapie, Emotion-Focused Therapy, Focusing ;
mort imminente, etc.) et les concepts de la psychothérapie transpersonnelle ;
