This research aims to examine the impact of shareholders value on the performance of conglomerate... more This research aims to examine the impact of shareholders value on the performance of conglomerate firms of Malaysia Agency theory addresses the issue between the agency and principal, a connection between the organizations officer and the investors in the business.Successful conglomerates rely on efficient management as an agency utilises corporate resources effectively to in solve issues such as fund tunnelling and conglomerate discounts to ensure conglomerate firms delivered values to shareholders. To address the agency conflicts in conglomerate firms, this study proposes a research framework that consists of conglomerate discounts, business strategic priorities and fund tunneling the sample was 52 conglomerate firms listed on Malaysia Bursa. Purpose: This paper aims to illustrate that conglomerate firms experienced the discount value in
emerging markets in Southeast Asian countries. It explains the causes of the discount values and
how it is affected the shareholders values. Shareholder value is essential for every business
organization, and management of the respective business organization needs to take the right
approaches to ensure the discount value is not overly affected shareholders’ values and
confidences.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper looks at the issues from strategic priorities and fund tunneling in conglomerate
firms in Southeast Asian. Cash, related party transaction and non-related investment are
causes of value discount
Findings: The discount value is unavoidable in the conglomerate firms’ operation. However,
shareholder value is outlined as an organization objective that has investor wealth with the
priority of highest level. Despite the negative perception about conglomerate discounts, it has the
advantages of liquidity, better-earning stability and low risk. Thus, the conglomerate firms are
able to deliver shareholders value for its ability undertakes new market, product and resources
more efficiently.
Originality/Value: The paper provides the insights of discount values in conglomerate firms
that have influenced on shareholders values. In particular, the study discusses the issues of firms’
strategic priorities and fund tunneling in Southeast Asia market.
