Voice Studies Critical Approaches to Process, Performance and Experience (Ed. by Ben Macpherson and Konstantinos Thomaidis), Jun 30, 2015

In opposition to an essentialized contrast between the cry of the 'others' and 'our failure to lament', this chapter aims to unfold the complexities of the vocal expression of loss. By so doing, I propose a tensional, antiphonal space between vocal excess and silence, in which the lamenting voice can exist as potentiality, even through the written word.

Greek people’. Yet unpublished in his drawers remains a manuscript with texts which the father of modern Greek folk studies takes care to conceal. This folder is discovered by Nikolaos’ disavowed son, Alexandro Jorge de Carvalho de Polites. During his expulsion from the paternal home, the wayward son of Politis steals the manuscript. He begins a journey around the world with his precious prey, which he systematically disseminates, while at the same time composing verses in his mother tongue. He ends up in Brazil, where he becomes a successful businessman with a large family.
Sao Paulo, 2019. João Nikolao Polites da Silveira, Alexandro’s youngest son, professor
at the first chair of Modern Greek Studies at the University of São Paulo, completes a research project of rescuing and promoting the suppressed manuscript. A key member of this project, the Greek-Brazilian post-doctoral research Nicephor Errantes edits the ‘selections from the occult songs of the Greek people’, the songs of the Politis manuscript [father’s folder], in counterpoint with the poems of Alexandro [son’s folder].

Performed by displaced people from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, and directed by Yolanda Markopoulou, the piece grew out of the Station Athens group's five-year theatre workshops. Extracts from the original play were intertwined with performative material brought to the project by the participants: from real-life testimonies to vocal improvisations, poems, and songs in different languages. Highlighting the historical thematic of the play, this adaptation was presented as a documentary theatre piece, and the participants as 'modern-day heralds' who provided on stage 'shocking accounts' concerning 'contemporary wars' (programme notes, 2015). After briefly revisiting the main body of literature on the voice of lament in ancient drama and in Aeschylus's The Persians in particular, but also after discussing the recent stage history of the play in Greece, I conduct a close reading of this adaptation. Based on semi-directed interviews and audiovisual archives from both the rehearsals and the final show,

Based on participant observation, we start by unfolding the discourses through which our interlocutors attempt to legitimise their religious practices, by connecting the Karbala narrative with the current political oppression of Shiite minorities , but also by articulating a poetics of similarity with equivalent acts of faith from the Greek cultural context, rather than arguments on multiculturalist difference. We then turn our attention to the way Ashura is portrayed by Greek art and media, and we unpack how the poetics of similarity and the politics of difference are presented from different viewpoints. Finally, we study how the interrelations between this migrant Shiite community and ideas regarding the " national self " are manifested in symbolic uses of blood—from murderous threats received by Neo-Nazi groups, to their rejected proposal for a blood-donation campaign parallel to the Ashura.

According to its director Dries Verhoeven, the piece sought to explore 'what is a multicultural environment today' by staging one-to-one encounters, where (ostensibly local) spectators were guided by performers (migrants, refugees or asylum seekers) through the city while listening to a story of forced displacement and exile. Drawing on a corpus of semi-structured interviews with the Athens-based performers, this article examines the performers' own conceptions and experiences of this institutional attempt to 'host' the laments of Others, as 'both a performance and a political act' (Anon. 2014b). Participants' narratives are studied in connection to the representational strategies of the performance, in an attempt to unpick interrelations between these theatrical walks and everyday experiences of discrimination in the Athenian urban fabric. In doing so, the article reveals a larger field of tensions and antinomies between representations and presences, vocalizations and silences, languages of the Other and mother tongues, art and 'life'.

Yet, remarkably little is known about these ‘border deaths’. In 2015, the Human Costs of Border Control project published the Deaths at the Borders Database for the Southern EU, an opensource ‘evidence base’ of individualised information about people who have died border deaths between 1990 and 2013, sourced from the death management systems of Spain, Gibraltar, Italy, Malta and Greece. It is the first database on border deaths in the EU to be based on official sources as opposed to the news media. The project involved searching 563 state-run death registry archives and deductively selecting the death certificates of persons who died border deaths. This paper describes, in detail, the making of the Deaths at the Border Database: from the systematic, multi-sited, quantitative data collection and qualitative case studies, to the construction and final results of the Database itself.

- Πού αποκλίνουν και πού αντηχούν οι δύο αυτές δράσεις;
- Τι απο-κρίσεις και τι ερωτήματα θέτουν σε δυο ιστορικά κρίσιμες στιγμές;
- Πώς συνυφαίνονται στην καθεμιά τους η πολιτική με την αισθητική διάσταση;
- Πώς και σε ποιο βαθμό επηρεάζονται από ή/και επηρεάζουν τις δυνάμεις της καταστολής και της ανατροπής;
- Πώς μπορούν να σημασιοδοτηθούν ανατρεπτικά τέτοιας υφής 'ριζωματικές αντηχήσεις' (Deleuze) γεωγραφικά απομακρυσμένων δημιουργών, στα πλαίσια ενός δικτυωμένου, παγκοσμιοποιημένου και νομαδικού κόσμου σε κρίση;

A long and variegated line of situational and translocal Antigones implies a heterogeneous and multilayered history which includes the voices and silences of subaltern and oppressed groups presenting, on the theatrical stages and social scenes of the contemporary world.

This one-year research project (2019) explored the religious lament of the Ashura as it is perfor... more This one-year research project (2019) explored the religious lament of the Ashura as it is performed by the Pakistani Shia community in Piraeus. With their focus on the act of ritual self-flagellation, mainstream media reinforce local stereotypes of Shia community practices as apparently incompatible with Greek cultural values. Social representations of the Shiite as ‘barbaric Others’ are frequently evoked in public debate in order to support anti-cosmopolitan narratives that are Islamophobic and racialised. Confronted with such xenophobia and social estrangement, the Shiite attempt to articulate systematic counter-narratives of ‘cultural intimacy’ (Herzfeld 2005). They stress the similarities between their ritual lament and various embodied performances of faith from within the Greek cultural context, such as the Tinos pilgrimage (Dubisch 1996) or the Anastenaria (Danforth 1989).
Combining archival research focusing on the reception of the Ashura in the local context (textual and visual analysis of relevant television programmes, articles in the press, websites, photographic exhibitions and art documentaries), and ethnographic fieldwork among the Shiite community in Piraeus during one calendar year (2019) valorizing a performative ethos of participant observation (Conquergood 2002: 149), the research project documented the community’s political struggle to promote, both discursively and practically, a multicultural vision of citizenship that is based on the embodied and affective aspects of subjectivity. At the same time, it explored the rich meta-symbolic character that the Ashura assumes in a migratory context, where it becomes an idiom or a means of expressing and negotiating feelings of loss associated with the experience of displacement. Moving beyond the case of the Ashura, the project further broadened the research focus by including examples of other performances of lament, in order to examine how the claim to ‘cultural intimacy’ is re-articulated in diverse contemporary artistic practices: from photography and documentary to performance.
A milestone of this research project was the one-day international symposium ‘The Performance of Lament as Production of “Cultural Intimacy”: From the Ritual of Ashura to Contemporary Artistic Practices’ (Athens School of Fine Arts, 23.11.2019). Putting together diverse perspectives and research by artists and anthropologists who commented on the performativity of faith in public space and its impact on the field of art, the symposium raised ethico-political issues in relation to fieldwork research, and reframed the concept of ‘cultural intimacy’ in contemporary environments of heterogeneity. In addition, the symposium explored the ways in which the performance of Shiite lament can be related to other embodied practices of religiosity in Greece such as, for instance, the Anastenaria. Further, it investigated how Shiite lament is visually recorded beyond the limits of televisual lenses, inspiring major photographic and cinematographic works in the Eastern Mediterranean (for example in Greece, Turkey and Lebanon). Finally, taking this ritual as a point of departure, the symposium raised questions regarding the connections between religious rituals and artistic performances, and in this way problematised, both methodologically and epistemologically, the mutual relations between ethnographic and artistic research.
[1] Ashura is the day of mourning for the martyrdom of Imam Husayn, the Prophet’s grandson and 3rd Imam. Imam Husayn led a revolt against the Omayyad Caliph Yazid A, and was finally beheaded in the battle of Karbala in 680 AD. This battle provides the central narrative around which Shia Muslims construct their political identity as migrants and their religious identification as a minority vis-à-vis Sunni Muslims in Greece. Ashura is commemorated every year through rituals of lamentation and public processions that include, in some cases, self-flagellation.

The three main sections of the platform are as follows:
Group I Participation through the Voice and Listening
How do we participate through the voice and listening when listening to the sounds of the streets?
How can we link the voice and distance?
What might the relationship be between a pre-recorded voice and the live?
How might the disembodied voice act as a live performer?
How do we relate to each other through the voice? What affect do accents, dialects, and intonation have on those relationships?
Group II Beyond the Voice
What is in the voice that goes beyond words?
To what extent are practices of listening and the voice political?
How does the voice and listening challenge notions of ‘being together’?
What might be in the voice that makes us unique?
What does our voice give away about ourselves that operates at the limit of our control?
Group III Lament, Voice, and Performance
How can the voice respond to loss through the performance of lament?
Does the noise of trauma have paralinguistic aspects?
How might lament connect with lullaby, glossolalia, or ululation?
How and to what extent can we record lament?
How do we lament without the voice?
To what extent can performances of lament subvert or reassert political realities?

- Πού αποκλίνουν και πού αντηχούν οι δύο αυτές δράσεις;
- Τι απο-κρίσεις και τι ερωτήματα θέτουν σε δυο ιστορικά κρίσιμες στιγμές;
- Πώς συνυφαίνονται στην καθεμιά τους η πολιτική με την αισθητική διάσταση;
- Πώς και σε ποιο βαθμό επηρεάζονται από ή/και επηρεάζουν τις δυνάμεις της καταστολής και της ανατροπής;
- Πώς μπορούν να σημασιοδοτηθούν ανατρεπτικά τέτοιας υφής 'ριζωματικές αντηχήσεις' (Deleuze) γεωγραφικά απομακρυσμένων δημιουργών, στα πλαίσια ενός δικτυωμένου, παγκοσμιοποιημένου και νομαδικού κόσμου σε κρίση;

Ashura is commemorated every year through rituals of lamentation and public processions that include, in some cases, self-flagellation.

minoritarian status as migrants in Greece. In this paper, I demonstrate how this initial research question has been challenged by my interlocutors and redirected through the fieldwork process. In order to do so, I reflect on the latter as a 'nexus of performances in which significant communicative events can happen' (Fabian 1999: 24) rather than as a strict collection of data or an ensemble of questions and answers.
