In 2009, the National Archaeological Museum at Athens opened the “Terracotta Figurines Collection” in which around five hundred objects from its depots were presented for the first time to the public. This collection had been built at the end of the nineteenth century with finds from excavations as well as out of purchases and donations from private assemblages. One of these was the antiquities collection of the professor at the University of Athens and art dealer Athanasios Rousopoulos (1823—1898). With Rousopoulos’ death in 1898, the antiquities he owned went into his eight children’s possession. These managed the artifacts’ distribution between the state museum and private ownership according to Greece’s second Law on Antiquities (1899).

This paper follows the storyline of one exemplary figurine — “monkey grinding corn with a pestle” (NAM inv. No. 12980) — that was passed from the Rousopoulos household to the museum on account of the new legislation. This type of provenance research considers archaeological artifacts as historiographical sources for biographical studies. In the case of Rousopoulos’ collection, the names we find in administrative records from the Museum archives and the Archives of the Archaeological Service bring together the history of antiquities in modern contexts and family biography.

The purpose of the following work is to examine the role of the citation in Constantine Christomanos’s Tagebuchblätter. In the first place, it is generally presented how the narrator depicts Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Although he meticulously describes her physical appearance and her melancholic beauty, he mostly insists on portraying her personality and revealing her way of thinking. Moreover, our research examines the function of citations which serve as a means for the narrator so as to offer a more precise image of Elisabeth’s character unveiling not only her thoughts and fears but also her disillusionment and chagrin about her life. This work is mainly focused on Heinrich Heine’s and Henrik Ibsen’s citations as they are the most extended and they divulge some crucial aspects of Elisabeth’s character which otherwise would have stayed obscure.

Σκοπός της συγκεκριμένης εργασίας είναι να εξεταστεί η προσωπικότητα της Αυτοκράτειρας Ελισάβετ όπως αυτή παρουσιάζεται από τον συγγραφέα-αφηγητή καθώς και ο τρόπος με τον οποίο η περιγραφή του χαρακτήρα και των σκέψεών της συμπληρώνονται από τα ποιητικά παραθέματα. Αφού γίνει αναφορά τόσο σε αποσπάσματα από ποιητές όπως, μεταξύ άλλων, του  μήρου και του Dante Gabriel Rossetti όσο και σε έμμετρα θεατρικά έργα όπως του William Shakespeare, θα εξεταστούν ενδελεχώς τα ποιητικά αποσπάσματα των Heine και Ibsen, τα οποία παρουσιάζουν ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον για τη σκιαγράφηση του χαρακτήρα της Αυτοκράτειρας.
Αρχικά, θα πρέπει να σημειωθεί ότι ο συγγραφέας-αφηγητής σε αρκετά σημεία του έργου του αναφέρεται στον Heine, χωρίς όμως να παραθέτει αποσπάσματα από τα ποιήματά του. Τρία είναι τα ποιητικά παραθέματα του Heine στο έργο του  ωνσταντίνου Χρηστομάνου. Στην πρώτη περίπτωση, η Αυτοκράτειρα χρησιμοποιεί ένα ποίημα του Heine για να σχολιάσει τον κόσμο και τον τρόπο, που αυτός δημιουργήθηκε και λειτουργεί. Στη δεύτερη περίπτωση, η Αυτοκράτειρα απάντα σε κάποιο σχόλιο του συγγραφέα-αφηγητή σχετικό με το τοπίο που έχουν μπροστά τους. Σε αυτό το σημείο έχουμε μια τελείως διαφορετική χρήση του ποιητικού παραθέματος, εφόσον χρησιμοποιείται με εμφανή πρόθεση αν όχι ειρωνείας, τουλάχιστον πικρού χιούμορ. Στην τρίτη περίπτωση, ο  ωνσταντίνος Χρηστομάνος και η Αυτοκράτειρα βρίσκονται στη θάλασσα σχολιάζοντας την εικόνα της.  συγγραφέας-αφηγητής είναι εδώ αυτός που επιλέγει να χρησιμοποιήσει κάποια αποσπάσματα από ένα ποίημα του Heine, το οποίο αναφέρεται στη μανιασμένη θάλασσα, και κατόπιν στη χλωμή γυναίκα που την αγναντεύει, η οποία ταυτίζεται με την Αυτοκράτειρα.
Επίσης, γίνεται συχνή αναφορά στο θεατρικό έργο Peer Gynt του Ibsen.  ιο συγκεκριμένα, ο συγγραφέας-αφηγητής παραθέτει ένα εκτενές απόσπασμα από το εν λόγω έργο, το οποίο θα εξεταστεί στην παρούσα εργασία. Η περίπτωση αυτού του παραθέματος είναι ιδιαίτερη, γιατί το ποιητικό κείμενο στο οποίο αναφέρεται, είναι μελοποιημένο, παραπέμποντάς μας έτσι όχι μόνο σε ποιητικό λόγο, αλλά και σε μουσική.
Τα συγκεκριμένα, λοιπόν, ποιητικά παραθέματα έχουν δεσπόζουσα σημασία, καθώς συμπληρώνουν το κείμενο και προσδίδουν εγκυρότητα σε όσα έχει να πει ο συγγραφέας-αφηγητής.

Those who work with topics related to Modern Greek identity usually start discussing these issues by quoting the famous Georgios Gemistos Pletho (c.1360-1454): we, over whom you rule and hold sway, are Hellenes by genos (γένος), as is witnessed by our language and ancestral education. Although Woodhouse thought of Pletho as the last of the Hellenes, others prefer to denounce him the last of the Byzantines and the first and foremost Modern Greek. During the 14th and 15th centuries, a number of influential intellectuals in the Eastern Roman Empire preferred the term Hellene (Ἓλλην) to identify themselves, instead of the formal Roman (Ρωμαῖος) and the common Greek (Γραικός). According to the prevalent view of modern scholarship, the shift should not be interpreted only as a statement of proto-national identity, but also as the outcome of growing archaism. As Vryonis pointed out, the historian Critoboulos used to call the Balkan nations with their archaic names: Byzantines became “Hellenes,” Albanians became “Illyrians,” etc. Chalkokondyles followed in the same path. Furthermore, in order to lament the decline of their Empire, byzantine intellectuals tended to compare their sad present to the glory of ancient Greece. Besides archaism, proto-nationalism and Hellenism, I suggest that a careful reading of the sources would lead us to reappraise the ways 15th century intellectuals perceived identity. Whilst I do not accept Vakalopoulos’ views on diachronic Hellenic identity, I support that, in the 15th century, Byzantine scholars attempted to create an identity based on cultural and historical continuity and otherness. Moreover, Laiou’s definition of Greek identity as a resultant of language, history, tradition and interests does not cover the case of 15th century Byzantine philosophers, since the latter strived to enrich and enlarge Greek identity with additional elements. It is worth noting that those philosophers who fled to Italy deliberately chose to describe themselves as
Greeks (Greci/Γραικοί) or Hellenes (Ἓλληνες) and not as Romans (Ρωμιοί/Ρωμαῖοι), according to the Byzantine official terminology. During the 15th century a major shift occurred in the Byzantine intelligentsia and its prominent members revisited matters of identity. In this paper, I attempt to scrutinize the ways Byzantine philosophers of the 15th century,
who lived in the territories of the Byzantine Empire and in Italy, perceived identity and otherness. In my research, I include not only Greek, but also Latin sources, since their works is written in both languages.

Επιχειρείται μια φαινομενολογική προσέγγιση της νύχτας στην ελληνική δραματουργία, από τη μεταπολίτευση και μετά. Η νύχτα είναι και λειτουργεί ενδοκειμενικά ως μία αναπαράσταση, δηλαδή ως μία ελλιπής ή και παραπειστική επανάληψη μιας ελικοειδούς και δυσπρόσιτης πραγματικότητας, ως μία επανάληψη που ενεργοποιεί κατά το μάλλον ή ήττον τις μεταφορικές δυνάμεις της γλώσσας, παράγοντας, ως εκ τούτου, νοητικά σχήματα ασταθή, αμφίβολα και αμφίσημα. Το μελέτημα δεν εστιάζει στις τυπικές χρονικές σημάνσεις της νύχτας, εκεί δηλαδή όπου μια σκηνική οδηγία μας πληροφορεί ότι απλώς είναι νύχτα, αλλά στα «γεγονότα» που λαμβάνουν χώρα κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της νύχτας και, σε αρκετές περιπτώσεις, στα γεγονότα γενικότερα που θα μπορούσαν να χαρακτηριστούν ως «νυχτερινά». Άρα, το ζήτημα μετακυλύεται από τη χρονική σήμανση στο περιεχόμενο της νύχτας, σε αυτό που θα μπορούσε να είναι νυχτερινό χωρίς απαραίτητα να λαμβάνει χώρα τη νύχτα, σε αυτό που είναι «σκοτεινό», ανοίκειο ή παραβατικό. Η νύχτα είναι το σύνορο του οριοθετημένου και του απεριόριστου, της λογικής και της φαντασίας, του φυσιολογικού και του τερατώδους, είναι η οριακή εκείνη περιοχή όπου ο άνθρωπος μπορεί να σταθεί έχοντας στη μία πλευρά του το οικείο περιβάλλον της «κατοικίας» του, (που αποτελείται λ.χ. από υιοθετημένες στάσεις και συμπεριφορές, από αυτονόητες προϋποθέσεις και κοινόχρηστες έννοιες), και στην άλλη, όλους εκείνους τους ακατοίκητους τόπους που αγνοεί, παραβλέπει ή απωθεί.
Οι αναλύσεις των έργων κινούνται σε δύο κατευθύνσεις: στην κατεύθυνση του ανοίκειου και σε εκείνη του οικείου. Μεταξύ των εξεταζόμενων κειμένων στην κατεύθυνση του ανοίκειου είναι ο Γάμος  και η Γυναίκα του Λωτ του Μάριου Ποντίκα, η Κατσαρίδα του Βασίλη Μαυρογεωργίου, το Playmobil του Παναγιώτη Μέντη, ο Αόρατος θίασος και οι Δύκολες νύχτες του κυρίου Θωμά του Ιάκωβου Καμπανέλλη, ο Φιλοκτήτης και Τα επτά κουτιά της Πανδώρας του Βασίλη Ζιώγα, ο Περιποιητής φυτών και Προς Ελευσίνα του Παύλου Μάτεσι, το Μαγικό δωμάτιο του Γιάννη Χρυσούλη, το Μόνο την αλήθεια  των Βασίλη Μαυρογεωργίου και Μαρία Φιλίνη. Στην κατεύθυνση του οικείου εξετάζονται τα έργα: Σε φιλώ στη μούρη του Γιώργου Διαλεγμένου, το Γάλα του Βασίλη Κατσικονούρη, Στην Εθνική με τα μεγάλα του Μιχάλη Βιρβιδάκη, οι Φιλοξενούμενοι του Μάρκαρη και οι Ξένοι του Μέντη, οι Εφτά λογικές απαντήσεις του Λεωνίδα Προυσαλίδη κ.ά, ενώ στις διασταυρώσεις των δύο κατευθύνσεων εξετάζονται το Σε σας που με ακούτε της Λούλας Αναγνωστάκη, Ο Κήπος με τα χελιδόνια του Μπάμπη Τσικληρόπουλου, το 314 του Παναγιώτη Παναγόπουλου, το Ατύχημα του Χρυσούλη ή ο Ορθός λόγος του Μάριου Ποντίκα.
Τα θέματα, οι εικόνες, οι ιστορίες και οι προσωπικές περιπέτειες που συναντούμε εδώ μπορούν να αποτελέσουν μέρος μιας μεγαλύτερης αφήγησης παραβάσεων και υπερβάσεων, αποκλίσεων και συμβολικών μορφών, η οποία θα μπορούσε να διευρύνει τις οπτικές γωνίες επόπτευσης των κειμένων. Μια παρόμοια προσέγγιση μας προτρέπει να ξαναδιαβάσουμε διεστιακά πολλά κείμενα της νεοελληνικής δραματουργίας με διαφορετικούς τρόπους και να διερευνήσουμε πώς οι ταυτότητες και οι διαφορές εμπλέκονται στη σύνθεση των κειμένων αυτών, διαμορφώνοντας μια διαλογική σχέση του εγώ και του άλλου.

This paper raises the hypothesis that a pluralistic welfare model is being
shaped in the Ionian island during the British occupation due to the
particularities of the cultural, political, economic and societal characteristics of the Ionian society and economy. A long term institutional analysis of the welfare provisions, from the Venetian period to the British rule, reveals the development of a complex coexistence, unique in the area at that period, of public and private institutions that aim to alleviate the paupers and those in need.

Ο Καποδίστριας συγκέντρωσε γύρω του και συνεργάστηκε με επιφανείς προσωπικότητες του ελληνορθόδοξου κόσμου στην υπηρεσία της Ρωσικής Αυτοκρατορίας, οι οποίες συνέβαλαν στην δημιουργία του νεοελληνικού κράτους πολλαπλώς. Ανάμεσα σε αυτές ξεχωρίζουν  δύο για την συμβολή τους στην δημιουργία μίας αποδεκτής από την Ευρώπη θεώρησης της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης. Ο Αλ. Στούρτζας συνέβαλε τα μέγιστα με τα βιβλία του στο να θεμελιωθεί η νομιμότητα της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης και να εξασφαλιστεί η αποδοχή της στην Κεντρική ιδίως Ευρώπη. Ο λιγότερο γνωστός, αλλά εξίσου σημαντικός συνεργάτης του Καποδίστρια, Σπ. Δεστούνης, αναδεικνύεται μέσα από τις επιστολές του κυρίως ως ένας δεινός κήρυκας της ελληνικής υπόθεσης. Από κοντά και ο ίδιος ο Κυβερνήτης, που παράλληλα με την πολιτική διαχείριση των υποθέσεων του τσάρου, την προαγωγή του ελληνικού ζητήματος και την ανάληψη στο τέλος της διακυβέρνησης της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης βρήκε τον χρόνο να ασχοληθεί και να γράψει τις ιστοριογραφικές αρχές της ιστορίας των Ελλήνων, οι οποίες θα τους καθιστούσαν ανεκτούς, τουλάχιστον, στην Ευρώπη της εποχής (ιστορία όχι του ελληνικού έθνους αλλά της ελληνικής εκκλησίας). Ο θεωρητικός λόγος για την ελληνική υπόθεση, που αρθρώνει αυτός ο κύκλος των Ελλήνων της Ρωσίας γύρω από τον Καποδίστρια,  θέτει τις βάσεις αποδοχής από την ευρωπαϊκή πολιτική πραγματικότητα της Επανάστασης του 1821, καθώς προτάσσει την θρησκευτική διάσταση, τον χριστιανικό χαρακτήρα της Επανάστασης εναντίον της μουσουλμανικής Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας. Και αυτή η θεώρηση έρχεται ως συνέχεια της πρότασης που κατέθεσε η ίδια ομάδα στο συνέδριο της Βιέννης, όταν προσπάθησε ως τμήμα της ρωσικής αντιπροσωπείας εκεί να πείσει τους Ευρωπαίους μοναρχικούς ότι η Ιερά Συμμαχία έπρεπε να θεμελιωθεί πάνω στην χριστιανική ιδιότητα των κρατών που θα την συναποτελούσαν και όχι πάνω στην αρχή της νομιμότητας που τελικά επικράτησε. Το σχετικό δοκίμιο του Στούρτζα, που προοριζόταν για καταστατικός χάρτης της Ιεράς Συμμαχίας, αποτέλεσε με κάποιες τροποποιήσεις το πρώτο από τα δύο έργα του με τα οποία υποστήριξε το δικαίωμα των Ελλήνων να επαναστατήσουν κατά της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας ακριβώς πάνω σε αυτήν την βάση, ότι δηλαδή ήταν χριστιανοί και έπρεπε να υποστηριχθούν από τους χριστιανούς μονάρχες της Ευρώπης. Αυτές οι απόψεις ήταν που τελικά δημιούργησαν το κλίμα του Φιλελληνισμού στην Κεντρική Ευρώπη και οδήγησαν προσωπικότητες, όπως ο Εϋνάρδος και ο Βασιλιάς της Βαυαρίας και πατέρας του Όθωνα, Λουδοβίκος, να υποστηρίξουν ουσιαστικά την Επανάσταση.

This paper attempts to link two distinct representational practices, maps and narratives, with reference to long fieldwork in an Aegean insular community; it investigates how the experience of space permeates collectivity through narratives and how it ultimately, and largely, mediates the community’s values in terms of a system. Here, the concept of “narrative maps” acquires both the meaning of collective representations and of a complex cognitive function for memorising and mapping space through bodily transfers and collective memory. To what extent is a community able to preserve collective memory with its maps spontaneously, without imposing “realms of memory”?

Existing studies on the translation of Nadsat – the invented language in A Clockwork Orange – neglect the fact that Nadsat is a result of language contact between English and Russian, and ignore the role that translators play in linguistic innovation, as well as the motivating factors behind their creativity. This study addresses this conspicuous gap by examining a multilingual corpus of A Clockwork Orange from a language contact and language change perspective, and creating for the first time a link between adaptation, as understood in contact linguistics, and creativity in translation. The focus is on how Russian-derived nouns in the English version have been rendered in four versions of Nadsat (French, German, Greek, and Spanish), and how these differ from naturally occurring Russian loan nouns in these languages, in terms of gender assignment and inflection. Results suggest that the level of creativity that translators demonstrate is not simply an indication of their talent, but rather a result of an interplay of factors related to translation, and that concepts from the field of language contact are particularly effective in reframing the way in which creativity is viewed in translation studies.

The start of the Great War and the tumult it generated continued until the foundation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923. Among the tragedies that happened in Turkish regions, that of Pontus, was characterised by massive killings, deportations, ethnic cleansings and other atrocities, which resulted in the disappearance of Christians without distinction to race, sect or nationality.

On top of that tragedy and for a different point of view in the study of those years, the testimony of Cirillo Giovanni Zohrabiàn is a valuable contribution. Born in Erzurum in 1881, Zohrabiàn was an Armenian Catholic of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. The records of his life between Erzurum and Trabzon in the years 1919-1923 were collected by him and published in Italian by Capuchins of Palermo in 1965 as his memories in Minor Asia.

In march 1923, the friar because of his assistance to Greeks of Pontus in terms of financial and humanitarian aid, was accused by Turkish authorities of being one of the leaders of Pontic Greek Committee, "the revolutionary Mesrob Sarkys". For that reason, he was expelled from Trabzon and sent by ship to Constantinople, where he was arrested, tortured and sentenced to death by hanging. Accused by the Turks, he sought for the help of the Dominican Order of the Church of SS Peter and Paul in Galata in order to prove his identity as friar. However, he was condemned to exile for helping the Greeks.

The aim of this paper is to expose the memories of Zorhabiàn. This would be the beginning of a research project on the Pontus tragedy based on Catholic archival and bibliography resources.

The literary rant is a unique mode of expression employed by dispossessed subjects to performatively highlight the mechanisms of their oppression and to create a rhetorical and political subject position from which to speak. The rant relies on the reader's complicity to witness the speech of the other and as such, it is like Judith Butler's rhetorical "scene of address" in which a listener judges the speaker as a recognizable member of society, or not. The ranter's language moves outside the domain of speakability risking misunderstanding in order to confront the limitations of language and the sociopolitical system has cast them out. It is a risk that challenges both the identity of the speaker and the social norms and responsibilities of the listener. Building on Dina Al-Kassim's scholarship on the rant, this article uses examples from Greek journalism and prose to demonstrate how ranting narrators usurp and redeploy sovereign speech to create a spectacle of their own abjection. Dimitris Dimitriadis's "Abomination" and selected stories by Christos Iconomou's Good Will Come from the Sea foreground the ranter's dispossession and explore the disruptive power that this speaking position offers.

Mərasim iştirakçıları əvvəlcə ulu öndər Heydər Əliyevin universitetin foyesindəki büstü önünə gül dəstələri qoyub, xatirəsini ehtiramla anıblar.

Tədbiri giriş sözü ilə açan rektor Kamal Abdulla konfrans haqqında məlumat verib. O bildirib ki, konfransın keçirilməsinin məqsədi ümummilli lider Heydər Əliyevin Azərbaycan multikulturalizmi sahəsində gördüyü işləri təbliğ etməkdir. Rektor xatırladıb ki, Ulu Öndərin anadan olmasının 95 illiyi münasibətilə ötən il təşkil olunan eyniadlı birinci konfrans dünyanın 11 ölkəsinin 14 universitetində keçirilib. Belə ki, konfransın açılış və bağlanışı ADU-da, bölmə iclasları isə müxtəlif ölkələrin universitetlərində təşkil edilib. Konfransın əhatə dairəsinin genişliyi sayəsində yüksək nəticələr əldə olunub.

Kamal Abdulla nəzərə çatdırıb ki, bu il də konfransın açılış və bağlanış mərasimi universitetdə keçirilir. Həmçinin konfrans bu il bölmə iclaslarını nüfuzlu elmi məkanlarla yanaşı, Cəbrayıl rayon 102 nömrəli tam orta məktəbində, N.Aslanov adına Cocuq Mərcanlı kənd tam orta məktəbində, Kəlbəcər rayon 1 nömrəli, Ağdam rayon 47 və 1 nömrəli, Xocavənd rayon Xocavənd kənd 1 nömrəli köçkün tam orta məktəblərində və Nardaran kənd 295 nömrəli məktəbdə keçirəcək. Bizim məqsədimiz bu məktəblərə ulu öndər Heydər Əliyevin ideallarını aparmaqla yanaşı, öz diqqət və qayğımızı da onlara göstərməkdir.

O deyib: “Heydər Əliyevlə təkcə Azərbaycan deyil, bütün türk dünyası fəxr edir. Ölkəmizdə tarixi ənənələrə əsaslanan multikulturalizm siyasəti Prezident İlham Əliyevin xüsusi diqqətindədir. Azərbaycanda müxtəlif dillərdə danışan, ayrı-ayrı dini inancları olan millətlərin nümayəndələri bir dövlətin – müstəqil Azərbaycanın vətəndaşları kimi yaşayırlar”.

Dini Qurumlarla İş üzrə Dövlət Komitəsinin sədri, YAP-ın icra katibinin müavini Mübariz Qurbanlı qeyd edib ki, milli müstəqil dövlətimizin, YAP-ın qurucusu Heydər Əliyevin bizə qoyub getdiyi irsi öyrənmək və onu gənc nəslə çatdırmaq borcumuzdur. Konfransın keçirilməsi bu baxımdan gözəl təşəbbüsdür. Çünki Ulu Öndərin apardığı siyasətdə tolerant və multikultural cəmiyyət qurmaq önəmli yer tuturdu.

Με αφορμή την τρέχουσα οικονομική κρίση και τις πολυποίκιλες επιπτώσεις της, το ένθετο της εφημερίδας επικεντρώθηκε στη Μεγάλη Ύφεση που έπληξε τις ευρωπαϊκές οικονομίες στα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα. Το άρθρο αυτό εξετάζει τις συνέπειες εκείνης της κρίσης στην ελληνική οικονομία. Αναλύει τις εγγενείς 'αδυναμίες' της ελληνικής οικονομίας αλλά και την απουσία προβλεπτικότητας από την πλευρά των ελληνικών κυβερνήσεων της εποχής να περιορίσουν τον κίνδυνο να συμπαρασυρθούν από μια γενικευμένη κρίση. Βασικό άξονα του άρθρου αυτού αποτελεί το ζήτημα του ελληνικού εξωτερικού δανεισμού. Παράλληλα διερευνώνται τα περιθώρια ανάπτυξης της ελληνικής οικονομίας στο πλαίσιο της κρίσης του τέλους του 19ου αιώνα.

A filmic guidebook of the Greek capital, World Film Locations: Athens takes readers to film locations in the central historical district, with excursions to the periphery of Athens—popular neighborhoods, poor suburbs, and slums often represented in postwar neorealist films—and then on to garden cities and upper-class suburbs, especially those preferred by the auteurs of the 1970s. Of course, no Grecian vacation would be complete without a visit to the sea, and summer resorts, hotels, and beaches near Athens are frequent backdrops for international productions. However, more recent economic strife has emptied city neighborhoods, created urban violence, and caused an increase in riots in the Mediterranean city, and representations of this on film are juxtaposed with images of the eternal and idyllic city.

Featuring both Greek and foreign productions from various genres and historical periods, the book ultimately works to establish connections between the various aesthetics of dominant representations of Athens.

My talk, “A Literature of their Own? Women’s Writing: Myths and Realities,” with a special focus on Greek literature in Cyprus, takes the risk of dealing with the highly controversial question of “woman” and “women’s writing”. Offering an aporetical approach to both of these terms, inevitably caught up in debates between essentialist and constructivist positions—as well as “myths” and stereotypes, I shall try to show that they remain a theoretical problem, as well as theoretically significant for us today. Involving a split—whether endorsed or rejected—between Woman and Man or Woman and the Generic, “women’s writing,” this paper argues, may further entail a forcible choice, for a woman, between her Gender and her Humanity. Can we embrace, taking Toril Moi’s lead in returning to Simone de Beauvoir, our bodily—resolutely sexed—being as “lived experience,” a “situation” and a “becoming,” devoid of any metaphysical luggage? Can we think of men and women as embodied beings, material and historical, who act, write, and make choices, without having to eliminate their gendered subjectivity?

Ο αναλφάβητος Καναλέτης παρουσιάζει στο κοινό μια  κωμωδία, όχι "τοπικού" ενδιαφέροντος, προορισμένη να παιχτεί κατ' αρχήν από τους φιλόμουσους Ληξουριώτες. Η έκδοσή της ωστόσο υποδηλώνει τη διάθεση του συγγραφέα να ξεπεράσει το έργο του τα όρια του νησιού.
This paper is about a theatrical comedy called "The soldier groom" written and published in Cephalonia, Greece, in 1883. The author Cosmas Montesantos-Kanalettis is a comedy that remonds us of the soldier heroes in commedia dell' arte.

With the operas "Frossini", "Markos Votzaris", "Despo" and dozens of songs of national character, Pavlos Carrer as a composer lays “the groundwork for the Hellenic melodrama” and takes decisive steps toward the creation of an independent Greek music school. He is a typical case of the pan-European national music school. Just like his Russian, Bohemian or Scandinavian colleagues, Carrer also gives precedence to opera and vocal music which he considers as the appropriate musical vehicle, he turns to local colour and national subjects, choosing the plots of his operas from episodes from the recent Greek history, featuring local and national heroes.

This new series provides a forum for exchange on a myriad of alternative histories of marginalized communities and individuals in the Near and Middle East and Mediterranean, and those of Middle Eastern or Mediterranean heritage. It will highlight thematic issues relating to various native peoples and their narratives and – with particular contemporary relevance – explore encounters with the notion of ‘other’ within various societies. Often moving beyond the conventional state-centred and dominant monolithic approach, or reinterpreting previously accepted stories, books in the series examine and explain themes from inter-communal relations, environment, health and society, and will explore ethnic, communal, racial, linguistic and religious developments that go beyond geopolitical compositions.
