This essay attempts to integrate the local paradigm of the Ionian State into the general structures of the British Empire, while at the same time examines the institutional continuities deriving from the Venetian dominion. An overall plan of the Ionian State's administration, focusing on governmental practices from the institutional point of view, is also being undertaken. The essay was based on primary and secondary sources' elaboration, referring to the administrative organization and to the state system in the Ionian Islands under the British Rule. Reflecting that, the social structure of the local society was interconnected to administrative mechanism. From a methodological perspective, the use of administrative archives is instrumental in synthetic process, in an effort to portray social networks and to clarify the formation of both individual and collective identities. Developing, however, the empirical work in the factual context is deemed necessary. The text is arranged in two parts: the first refers to the local economic realities, as well as to the economic mechanisms shaped in the context of the British Rule. Both subject matters are examined in very general terms. Public finance, the banking sector and the monetary system are research objects, aiming at a grosso modo description of Ionian State's economic practices. In this framework, a special mention is made to the financial mission of Gladstone to the Ionian Islands. British Rule's economic policy is also being considered with regard to the changes in property rights: although the policy of the abolition of the feudal rural estate is not completed during the period of the Ionian State, it is nevertheless indicative of the market's transition to more liberal (or more monetarized) forms. Finally, the economic reforms taking place between 1834 and 1836 are analyzed, with special focus on the protection of local agricultural products. A reference to commercial and maritime activity is also included, with emphasis on government interventions to support (or not support) private initiative. The second part of the essay examines the gradual articulation of the state mechanism and the way this is reflected to the intended rationalization of legislative and executive authorities. In this context, the language used in administration (Italian, English, and then Greek) elucidates reforms and alterations of the State mechanism, and is also related to the emergence of a local identity. The statecraft of the Ionian State is also being examined, with a reference to the previous constitutional texts of the Septinsular Republic, as an encounter of both institutional continuity and discontinuity. Thus, the administrative mechanisms of the Ionian State are analyzed in their interaction with the local society, as an indicator of British colonial practices. Beyond the articulation of the executive, juridical and legislative authorities, as expressed in the Constitution of 1817 but also as reflected in the relevant archive material, the text contains an analysis of the reforms of 1848/1849 that basically correspond to a more proportional representation of the local population and to alterations concerning the executive authority expressed by the Commissioners, the Senate and local governors (prefects). Finally, as the administration is ran by individuals, a special reference to the relevant social network deriving from governmental practices is made: The State's administration staffing during the period of the British Rule constitutes a qualitative indicator for the social formation of the Ionian Islands and for social mobility, mainly in the context of the higher and middle-class bourgeoisie.

This paper raises the hypothesis that a pluralistic welfare model is being
shaped in the Ionian island during the British occupation due to the
particularities of the cultural, political, economic and societal characteristics of the Ionian society and economy. A long term institutional analysis of the welfare provisions, from the Venetian period to the British rule, reveals the development of a complex coexistence, unique in the area at that period, of public and private institutions that aim to alleviate the paupers and those in need.

Located in western Greece from modern Albania through the coast of Akarnania in the North to the Peloponnese in the South, the Ionian Islands are largely at risk from various natural events. Several tectonic stress fields strongly influence the Islands of Kerkyra, Lefkada, Kefalonia and Zakynthos, as well as their satellite Islands resulting in earthquakes and related natural disasters. In addition, the region of Akarnania and the Ionian Islands, with their unusually high amount of rainfall, represent an exception to the warm and dry climate prevalent in the eastern Mediterranean. For this reason, this presentation will review the geological and climatic setting of the Islands to show the usefulness of systematic analysis of climate with regard to understanding the formation of landscapes and settlement activities. The study will use recent archaeological and scientific studies focused on the climate of the Ionian archipelago and the Mediterranean to draw a coherent picture of the influence of Mediterranean climate on humans from the first evidenced human activity on the Ionian Islands until the Bronze Age and Protogeometric period. Special focus will be given on the impact of special weather phenomenon on the formation of landscapes and coastlines of the Islands, and its influence on the site selection of settlements.

Η Ιστορία της οικογένειας Παναγιώτη Σπυρίδωνος Σαμαρτζή από τα Ιωάννινα αποτελεί χαρακτηριστικό μικροδείγμα γένεσης και εξέλιξης των φτωχών οικογενειών του 19ου αιώνα, που κάποιο ή κάποια από τα μέλη τους ευημέρησαν. Ο Παναγιώτης Σαμαρτζής, ο οποίος τελικά εγκαταστάθηκε στην Κέρκυρα, άφησε σε χειρόγραφο την ιστορία της οικογένειάς του, το οποίο και εκδίδεται στην παρούσα μελέτη.

Ο «Μικρός Πολίτης» (Αργοστόλι, 1876) του Κεφαλονίτη λόγιου και εκπαιδευτικού Παναγιώτη Βεργωτή (1841-1916) είναι ένα ενθουσιώδες δοκίμιο που αποτυπώνει τις απόψεις του συγγραφέα για τις ελλείψεις του εκπαιδευτικού συστήματος του καιρού του και περαιτέρω προτάσεις θεσμικής αναδιαμόρφωσής του, με έμφαση στον κοινωνικό χαρακτήρα της εκπαίδευσης. Οι μικροί μαθητές είναι οι μελλοντικοί κοινωνικοί ρόλοι – από την ποιότητα της εκπαίδευσης και τη διάδοσή της σε όλα τα στρώματα της κοινωνίας εξαρτάται η επίτευξη μιας δικαιότερης κοινωνίας. Ο Βεργωτής δίνει έμφαση στην ευρύτερη δυνατή διάδοση της δημοτικής εκπαίδευσης, στην δημιουργία διδασκαλοσχολών, στη χρήση της καθομιλουμένης γλώσσας στην εκπαιδευτική πράξη και στα σχολικά βιβλία, στην ολόπλευρη (σωματική και ψυχική) ανάπτυξη του παιδιού, στην εφαρμογή της ερβαρτιανής συνδιδακτικής μεθόδου αντί της αλληλοδιδακτικής και στην απονομή βραβείων και επαίνων στους μαθητές. Προτείνει οι ευεργέτες να χρηματοδοτήσουν την δημοτική εκπαίδευση, επενδύοντας στην βελτίωση της κοινωνίας. Το έργο του Βεργωτή, ο οποίος δεν έφυγε ποτέ από τα στενά όρια της Κεφαλονιάς, θεωρητικό στη βάση του αλλά με πρακτικό προσανατολισμό, εμφορείται από τις παιδαγωγικές αξίες του Διαφωτισμού, αλλά φαίνεται και να διαλέγεται με τις σύγχρονές του παιδαγωγικές θεωρίες (Schleiermacher, Herbart).

With the operas "Frossini", "Markos Votzaris", "Despo" and dozens of songs of national character, Pavlos Carrer as a composer lays “the groundwork for the Hellenic melodrama” and takes decisive steps toward the creation of an independent Greek music school. He is a typical case of the pan-European national music school. Just like his Russian, Bohemian or Scandinavian colleagues, Carrer also gives precedence to opera and vocal music which he considers as the appropriate musical vehicle, he turns to local colour and national subjects, choosing the plots of his operas from episodes from the recent Greek history, featuring local and national heroes.

Pavlos Carrer [Paolo Carrer] decided to compose "Despo" in summer 1875 after visiting the then newly-founded Athens Conservatoire. As part of his high mission to establish a national music school with opera as its crowning achievement, according to the model of European national music schools, the composer undertook to set to music a melodramatic work, entitled "Despo", written by a drama teacher at the Conservatoire, Antonios Manousos, in order for it to be used as a practice piece by the “students of vocal and instrumental music”. Apart from being a drama teacher, the Corfiot Antonios Manousos was also a prolific poet, author and translator, distinguished for his contribution to the collection and publication of folk songs. As a result, the one-act play he suggested to Carrer, The tragic death of Despo and her daughters-in-law at Dimoula’s tower, is imbued with his hands-on and in-depth contact with the Greek folk literary tradition, and theatre.

The earliest known aria in Greek was heard in Corfu in January 1827, was composed by Nikolaos Halikiopoulos Mantzaros and -predictably enough- was entitled Aria Greca. It was performed by an Italian singer during her beneficial night and its characteristic was that in its score the Greek verses were written with letters of the Latin alphabet, in order to facilitate the soloist. Until recently it was believed that the aforementioned composition was a unicum and that the absence of professional Greek-speaking singers (especially those of the “fair sex”) was a factor that prevented the composition of vocal works of the operatic genre in Greek language. Nonetheless, the last few years research revealed several references to arias and other brief works of operatic character “in Greek idiom”, both original and translations of standard repertory works. Most of these compositions were once more performed during beneficial performances or charity galas. The paper will attempt to investigate the archival references and the works themselves (were available), will raise some questions regarding the practical use of such compositions from the Italian singers perspective, and will commend on the need for works related to the operatic genre in Greek in the Ionian theatres of the British Administration especially in a period, during which even the slightest reference to the Greek language was considered an emblem of national (self)determination.

Zakynthos, niewielka wyspa na zachodzie Grecji, jest obecnie jednym z najpopularniejszych celów wakacyjnych podróży u wybrzeży Morza Śródziemnego. Wraz z liczbą wypoczywających zwiększa się również zasób narracji mówiących o tym miejscu. Kształtują one oczekiwania turystów i sposób ich percepcji. Obraz Zakynthos w wakacyjnych folderach różni się od rzeczywistości i nie znajduje odzwierciedlenia w realiach życia zamieszkującej wyspę ludności. Narracje, służąc interesom touroperatorów chcącym stworzyć alternatywny obraz świata, roztaczają przed wczasowiczami wizję raju. Sposób prowadzenia narracji przekłada się na doświadczenia turystów i formy organizacji ich wypoczynku, a także wpływa na zachowania mieszkańców wyspy, którzy, stając się przedmiotem opisu, dążą do przebudowy własnej tożsamości. Niniejsze studium przypadku oparte jest na kilkunastu miesiącach badań prowadzonych na Zakynthos.

The presentation took place at the V Congress "The present and the future of our monuments. Cultural heritage and the 3rd Community Support Framework. The contribution of the Hellenic Archaeological Service to society."
The Corfu Opera Hall was to be erected on a 15.0000 m2 plot of land in the area of the necropolis of ancient Korkyra. Despite various problems -lack of final study, incoplete expropriations, funding flow etc.- until the end of 2005 aproximately 4.000 m2 have been excavated for explonatory purposes (70% of the building area). The excavations have brought to light two sections of ancient funerary paths, two funerary monuments and 248 tombs (pit graves, tile covered vaulted graves, cist graves, funerary urns, sarkophagoi and clay construction used as crematoria) dating from 7th to the 2nd century BC, in this way enriching our knowledge of burial customs and the organisation of the necropolises of ancient Corfu (Korkyra)

Grecka wyspa Zakynthos jest miejscem potencjalnie zagrożonym rozwojem zjawiska overtourismu. W trakcie kilkunastu miesięcy badań terenowych oceniono, do jakiego stopnia, w okresie do października 2018 roku, przekroczono na wyspie granice chłonności turystycznej. Zdefiniowano również problemy w funkcjonowaniu lokalnego ruchu turystycznego, zebrano dane dotyczące stosunku mieszkańców Zakynthos do dalszego rozwoju turystyki, a także oszacowano ryzyko degradacji doświadczeń wypoczywających na wyspie turystów. Stwierdzono, że konieczne jest szybkie podjęcie działań mających na celu poprawę bieżącej sytuacji i uniknięcia zjawiska overtourismu. Walka z efektami nadmiernej koncentracji ruchu turystycznego nie musi oznaczać tu jednak ograniczenia liczby przybywających na wyspę turystów. Na Zante potrzeba kompleksowego planu odrodzenia turystyki, który – poza priorytetowym zwiększeniem wydajności dostępnej infrastruktury – zmierzałby do wykorzystywania w pełni fizycznych, ekologicznych i kulturowych walorów wyspy bez szkodzenia im. Szczególną szansą może być dążenie do rozwijania i promowania na Zakynthos form turystyki zrównoważonej i kwalifikowanej.

Η παρούσα μονογραφία, καρπός εικοσαετούς επιτόπιας έρευνας, φιλοδοξεί ν’ αναδείξει –μέσα από την πολιτισμική χαρτογράφηση περιοχών της Ελλάδας–  όψεις και αναπαραστάσεις της μουσικής και του χορού ως διαδικασίες, που οδηγούν σε ΠΟΛΙΤΙΣΜΙΚΕΣ ΜΕΤΑΒΑΣΕΙΣ και ΜΕΤΑ-ΤΑΥΤΟΤΗΤΕΣ, στο πρόσφατο παρελθόν και στο σήμερα. Οι γεω-πολιτισμικές περιοχές (περιπτώσεις μελέτης) θεωρούνται αντιπροσωπευτικές της τοπο-γεωγραφίας, της δισυπόστατης γεωγραφικής ταυτότητας της χώρας (νησιωτική και στεριανή Ελλάδα), της ανθρωπο-γεωγραφίας (εθνοτοπικές, εθνοπολιτισμικές και εθνοτικές ομάδες, όπως Αρβανίτες Μοριά, Σαρακατσάνοι, Αλβανόφωνοι Ηπείρου), όπως και της μουσικής & χορευτικής ποικιλότητας, προσφέροντας έτσι μια εντός συνόρων διαπολιτισμική προσέγγιση του λαϊκού μουσικού πολιτισμού της Ελλάδας. 
Στην παρούσα μελέτη αναδεικνύεται, επίσης, η λειτουργία της μουσικής και του χορού στο πολιτισμικό συγκείμενο, όπως και οι πολιτισμικές πρακτικές στο πλαίσιο των (ανα)παραστάσεων της εκάστοτε τοπικής λαϊκής παράδοσης με αναβίωση εθίμων και δρώμενων (π.χ. «Γιεμ» στο Σοφικό Κορινθίας, «Γιαρέντης» και «χορός της Τράτας» στην Περαχώρα Κορινθίας, «χορός με τις τζέντζερες στην Καρυά Λευκάδας), μέσα από τη διαμεσολάβηση των πολιτιστικών σωματείων, εθνικής και τοπικής εμβέλειας. (Πρωτοτυπία, επίσης, της μονογραφίας η κατάταξη των  πολιτιστικών σωματείων με βάση το ιδεολογικό και γεωγραφικό τους πλαίσιο.)
Με άλλα λόγια, με αφορμή και πέρα από την αναφορά σε χαρακτηριστικά, όπως ρυθμοί, κλίμακες, τροπικά συστήματα, όργανα, ρεπερτόριο, κουρδίσματα, τεχνικές κ.λπ., η θεωρητική αυτή μελέτη φωτίζει τον ρόλο της μουσικής (κυρίως) και του χορού (συνακολούθως), ως πολιτισμικών αγαθών στην εκάστοτε γεω-πολιτισμική περιοχή, και αναδεικνύει τις κοινωνικές, ιδεολογικές και πολιτικές (με την ευρεία έννοια) συνθήκες/ αίτιες δημιουργίας τους, όπως και μετάβασής τους: από το λαϊκό της υπαίθρου στο popular της πόλης, από το ανατολίτικο στο δυτικό(τροπο), από το εκκλησιαστικό στο κοσμικό στοιχείο, από το παραδοσιακό ύφος στο νεωτερικό, από την παραδοσιακή επιτέλεση στη διασκευή, από το local στο glocal, από το ιδιοτοπικό (particular), στο ethnic και το παγκόσμιο (world). Μετα-ταυτότητες, που αντανακλούν τη μετάβαση, την απεδαφοποίηση, την ετερο-τοπικότητα, την απο-πλαισίωση, τη νέα νοηματοδότηση της παράδοσης, του φολκόρ κι εντέλει της ίδιας της μουσικής και του χορού.
Οι βασικοί θεωρητικοί κι ερμηνευτικοί άξονες είναι: εκδυτικισμός, αστικοποίηση, πολιτισμικός και γλωσσικός ηγεμονισμός, (εθνική) πολιτιστική διαχείριση, πολυνησιωτικότητα, ετερο-τοπικότητα και μεταβατικότητα (οι δύο τελευταίοι όροι, μαζί με τους όρους εθνογραφίες μετάβασης και μετα-ταυτότητες αποτελούν νέα κατάθεση της γράφουσας στον χώρο των ανθρωπολογικών και λαογραφικών σπουδών). 
Όλο αυτό το εθνογραφικό υλικό και η εμπειρία ‘στο πεδίο’ οδήγησαν σ' έναν οδηγό κανόνων εθνογραφικής έρευνας, όπως επίσης και σε ένα σώμα με προτάσεις για πολιτιστική διαχείριση, τα οποία επίσης περιλαμβάνονται στη μελέτη.
Κοινό γνώρισμα των κειμένων, ότι η Εθνογραφία και η Εθνομουσικολογία συνομιλούν με την (πολιτισμική) Ιστορία, τη Λαογραφία, την Ανθρωπολογία και την Κοινωνιολογία, μέσα από αφηγήσεις, με χαρακτήρα ερμηνευτικό και κριτικό απ’ ό,τι «ημερολογίου» (όπως συχνά συμβαίνει σε εθνογραφικά κείμενα), χωρίς όμως, να λείπουν η αυτο-αναφορικότητα κι ο αναστοχασμός. 

This monograph, fruit of twenty years of fieldwork, aims to enhance, through a cultural mapping of regions of Greece, aspects and representations of its folk culture, in particular music and dance as processes leading to cultural transitions and meta-identities, in the recent past and the present. Its basic theoretical and interpretive axes are: Westernization / Europeanization, urbanization, cultural and linguistic hegemony, (national) cultural management, multi-insularity, localism, hetero-topicism and transitivity (the last two terms, together with cultural transitions and meta-identities, coined by the author, are neologisms in the disciplines of Anthropology and Folklore Studies).
The geo-cultural regions (case studies: Ionian Islands, North Aegean Islands, Epirus, Corinthia) are representative of the dualistic geographical identity of the country (island and mainland Greece), the human-geography (ethno-local, ethno-cultural and ethnic groups, such as Peloponnesian Arvanites, Sarakatsans, Albanian-speakers of Epirus), as well as of the diversity of music and dance, thus offering an intra-borders cross-cultural approach to the musical culture of Greece. Occasioned by and further to references to characteristics such as rhythms, scales, modality, instruments, tunings, techniques, repertoire, and so on, this theoretical study sheds light on the role of music (mainly) and dance (consequently) as cultural goods in each geo-cultural region, and enhances the social, ideological and political (in the widest sense) conditions/ causes of their creation, as well as of their cultural transition: from the folk of the rural environment to the popular of the city, from the eastern to the western(-style), from the ecclesiastical to the secular element, from the traditional style to the modern, from the traditional performance to the adaptation, from local to glocal, from particular to ethnic and world. So, from the Asia Minor karsilamades and manedes of the religious feasts (panegyria) we pass to waltz, tangos and polkas by the diseuses at the popular entertainment venues. From the kariotikos dance of Ikaria we pass to the de-territorialized ‘nisiotikos’ (generic ‘island dance’) in the nightspots of Athens. From the Italian-rooted Ionian kantada and the brass bands we pass to the harmonized ecclesiastical idiom of the Ionian Islands. From the traditional feast with bagpipe (tsambouna) and toumbi (drum) we pass to the modern festival with pop - folk band with keyboards and bouzouki in the North Aegean islands. From the folk songs we pass to the post-folk arrangements of folk songs (e.g. Klezmer Yunan, V.I.C., Μοde Plagal, etc.). Μeta-identities which reflect the transitivity, the de-territorialization, the hetero-topicism, the de-framing, the new signification of tradition, folklore and, in the end, music itself and dance.
Examined too are the cultural contextualization of music and dance, as well as the practices of each local folk tradition and culture in the framework of the revival of customs and rituals (e.g. ‘Yem’ at Sophiko in Corinthia, ‘Yarentis’ and ‘Trata dance’ at Perachora in Corinthia, ‘dance with the tencere [casserole]’ at Karya on Lefkas island), through the intermediation of cultural associations of national and local ambit. (Another original contribution of the monograph is the classification of cultural associations on the basis of their ideological and geographical scope.)
All this ethnographic material and experience ‘in situ’ led to a guide of standards for ethnographic research as well as to a body of suggestions for cultural management, also included in this study.
Common trait of the texts is that Ethnography and Ethnomusicology converse with (cultural) History, Folklore Studies, Sociology and Anthropology, through narratives which, despite the self-ethnographic substrate, are interpretive and critical in character rather than notes from the ‘daybook’ (as is often the case in ethnographic texts), but without this precluding self-reference, self-reflexivity and self-criticism.

Το Ανάκτορο του Αχιλλέα στην Κέρκυρα αποτελεί μια από τις σημαντικότερες μαρτυρίες για την αρχική μορφή του Αχιλλείου και στην έκδοση αυτή μεταφράζεται και μελετάται ξεχωριστά για πρώτη φορά. Στην Εισαγωγή του βιβλίου σκιαγραφείται ο βίος των πρωταγωνιστών της ιστορίας: της αυτοκράτειρας Ελισάβετ, του Χρηστομάνου και των δημιουργημάτων τους, του ανακτόρου και του βιβλίου για το ανάκτορο. Οι πληροφορίες που παρείχε ο Χρηστομάνος για το Αχίλλειο εμπλουτίζονται στο Επίμετρο του βιβλίου από μαρτυρίες επισκεπτών του, αλλά και άρθρα αυστριακών εφημερίδων, οι οποίες το παρουσίασαν εκτενώς στο αναγνωστικό τους κοινό στα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα. Μια σημαντική παράμετρος της συγγραφής του Ανακτόρου του Αχιλλέα, η σχέση ανάμεσα στο συγγραφέα και την αγαπητή του αυτοκράτειρα, αναδεικνύεται επίσης στο Επίμετρο με στόχο να ερμηνευτεί το πάθος και ο λυρισμός του συγγραφέα στην περιγραφή του Αχιλλείου. Η συμπληρωματική μελέτη ολοκληρώνεται στον Επίλογο, με την αφήγηση των τελευταίων χρόνων της παραμονής του Χρηστομάνου στη Βιέννη, την εναλλαγή των επαγγελματικών επιτυχιών και αποτυχιών του, τις προσπάθειές του για οικονομική ανεξαρτητοποίηση, αλλά και την κακή σχέση του με την αυτοκρατορική αυλή.
Στόχος της μελέτης που συνοδεύει το κείμενο του Χρηστομάνου είναι να διαλύσει την αχλή του μύθου γύρω από το Αχίλλειο και να παρουσιάσει, με τη συνδρομή των ιστορικών πηγών, την πραγματική εικόνα του, όταν η αυτοκράτειρα της Αυστρίας ήταν ακόμη ενθουσιασμένη και υπερήφανη γι’ αυτό.

Το εγχείρημα Τρικυμία του Πολυλά συνδυάζει πολλές πρωτοβουλίες που αντλούν μεν από το παρελθόν και το παρόν (Σολωμός), αλλά αντιπροτείνουν και νέες πνευματικές πρακτικές: ολοκληρώνουν, συνοδεύουν με κριτικά κείμενα, δημοσιεύουν. Μεταφραστικά εγχειρήματα όπως η Τρικυμία μπορούν να διαβαστούν σε σχέση με τις πνευματικές τάσεις της εποχής, αλλά και σε σχέση με το έργο, μεταφραστικό και πρωτότυπο, του ίδιου του μεταφραστή, αλλά και προγενέστερων και συγχρόνων του. Με ποιο σκεπτικό επιλέγεται από τον Πολυλά ο Σαίξπηρ και το συγκεκριμένο έργο; Πώς διαβάζονται οι μορφολογικές επιλογές του μεταφραστή στα συμφραζόμενα της εποχής; Μέσω αυτού το εγχειρήματος οι «αφανείς θησαυροί της δημοτικής γλώσσας» έγιναν λιγότερο «αφανείς», ο «αγών με τας μορφωμένας γλώσσας των αρχαίων και των νεωτέρων” εντατικότερος και γονιμότερος και αυτό αποτέλεσε κέρδος για τη φιλολογική μας γλώσσα.

Με αφορμή την αποκωδικοποίηση της σημειογραφίας και του μουσικού ύφους του χειρογράφου αρ. 31 της Ι. Μονής Υπεραγίας Θεοτόκου Πλατυτέρας στην Κέρκυρα, επιχειρείται η σαφής διάκριση μεταξύ της παραδοσιακής εκκλησιαστικής μουσικής των Επτανήσων και του λατινογενούς μουσικού ιδιώματος που αντικατοπτρίζεται σε αυτό το σημαντικό, νεοανακαλυφθέν τεκμήριο.

"SPAGNA CONTEMPORANEA"
1820-1830: RIVOLUZIONE, REAZIONE, LIBERALISMO
Convegno in omaggio a Alberto Gil Novales e Jean-René AymesLa vicinanza del Bicentenario delle rivoluzioni liberali in Grecia, Polonia, Portogallo, Spagna e Italia tra il 1820 e il 1830 e dell’estensione della crisi all’Atlantico e al Mediterraneo è utile per un primo bilancio sulle ricerche in corso e sulle prospettive storiografiche.
Si trattò di una crisi globale, che svolse un ruolo di primo piano nelle origini del mondo contemporaneo, intrecciando guerra e rivoluzione, progetti costituzionali e rinnovamenti delle monarchie, o viceversa rilancio del loro assetto materiale e ideologico tradizionale. Essa mobilitò eserciti e comunità politiche, favorendo la circolazione di uomini e generando una imponente messe di testimonianze e memorie.
La proposta di convegno prende le mosse dal corpo di studi internazionali che negli anni recenti, focalizzandosi sull’epoca post-napoleonica, si è misurato sui contenuti e i modi della politicizzazione e del conflitto civile; così come sull’istituto monarchico e sulle ideologie, le correnti e le pratiche controrivoluzionarie in Europa e in America; come, infine, sui caratteri transnazionali della Restaurazione, la nascita dei diversi patriottismi nazionali e le differenti e tipiche declinazioni del liberalismo.All’interno di questo mondo, il conflitto tra la Rivoluzione e la Restaurazione ha prodotto soluzioni politiche, statali, nazionali e costituzionali differenti: e in tal senso lo studio della crisi del decennio 1820-1830 offre ancora oggi la possibilità di formulare innovative prospettive interpretative sui modi della transizione che portò dalla guerra globale del 1792-1815 alla creazione delle comunità politiche ed istituzionali caratteristiche del mondo contemporaneo.
Le nuove domande della storiografia politica, istituzionale e culturale aprono uno spazio proficuo ai fini dell’innovazione della ricerca su questo periodo. Discuterle è l’obiettivo principale di questo convegno.
All’iniziativa hanno aderito oltre quaranta studiosi, provenienti da dieci Paesi (Francia, Germania, Grecia, Messico, Polonia, Portogallo, Regno Unito, Spagna, Stati Uniti, Italia), che da diversi punti di vista e con diversi approcci metodologici affronteranno i vari temi enunciati nel titolo.

The Inner Ionian Archipelago, delimited by the coasts of Akarnania to the east and Lefkada, Kefalonia and Ithaca to the west, is characterised by coastal lowlands, extended and intricate shorelines, complex inland topography, little arable land, seasonal and perennial wetlands and a karstic landscape featuring caves, rockshelters, dolines, and basins some of which are partly or totally submerged. Since 2010, the Teleboides, the northern cluster of islands, were at the focus of an intensive surface survey organised by the University of Crete in collaboration with the Ephorates of Αitoloakarnania and Lefkada, and Kefalonia and Ithaca. The survey project coupled with targeted small-scale excavation was designed to investigate the history of occupation and the cultural interconnections with settlements on the opposite mainland and the larger islands of the Ionian Sea. Between 2010 and 2012, through archaeological surface reconnaissance, our team covered an area of a little less than 7 km2 on Meganisi, Thileia, Kythros, Tsokari, Petalou, Nisopoula, Phormikoula, Madouri, Atokos and Arkoudi. During the survey 30 sites dating from the Palaeolithic to the 19th century, with a hiatus between Late Antiquity and the 18th century, were discovered and mapped, and 20,000 portable artefacts were recovered. The finds bridge the gap between the archaeological record of the Ionian Sea and that of mainland Greece. In this paper we present the research objectives, the methodology of what we have termed a hybrid island archaeology approach, andthe main results of the project based on the portable finds that span the Middle Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age.

Riassunto
I Regesti marittimi croati (RMC) fanno parte di un progetto più ampio - il Codice Marittimo Diplomatico Croato che comprende in tutto circa 100.000 documenti riguardanti la presenza croata nell’Adriatico e nel Mediterraneo. Suo fautore è il prof. Nikola Čolak che lo ha intrapreso nel 1956 a Zadar e per quarant’anni ha lavorato in vari archivi adriatici alla ricerca di documenti che mappassero la vita adriatica e mediterranea dei secoli passati. L’obbiettivo del progetto è la pubblicazione sistematica di fonti primarie riguardanti la storia marittima dei territori croati in una collezione di 20 volumi, i Regesti Marittimi Croati.
I documenti offrono un’incredibile abbondanza di informazioni di tipo onomastico, toponomastico e naturalmente generali quali merci e persone trasportate, le rotte, gli usi e i costumi, tipi di navigli, scorci di vita quotidiana come baruffe fra marinai, lotte in mare aperto, piraterie e attacchi corsari, rapporti internazionali fra i vari stati.
Zrinka Podhraški Čizmek continua il lavoro del prof. Čolak, continuando la pubblicazione della collana dei regesti e inserendola nel contesto delle Digital Humanities per una migliore e veloce ricerca ed analisi di concetti chiave utili nelle varie discipline umanistiche.
Dopo una introduzione al progetto ed ai documenti stessi verranno illustrati tre possibili tipi di analisi operate sulle fonti grazie al sistema di ricerca in PDF ovvero su materiale OCR.

I navigli.
Nella prima parte “I navigli” verranno presentati tutti i tipi ed elementi distintivi dei navigli menzionati nei primi tre volumi dei Regesti marittimi croati (RMC I-III) che comprendono circa 16.000 documenti riguardanti, tra l’altro, i velieri in uso nell’Adriatico durante il Settecento. Lo studio espone 18.536 menzioni di bastimenti classificati in 79 termini diversi messi a confronto rispetto l’etimologia e caratteristiche peculiari di ogni natante (quali stazza, attrezzatura velica, uso e quant’altro). L’analisi dimostra che i piccoli paroni preferivano velieri più piccoli, dalla portata fra le 20 e 300 t, essendo più veloci e manovrabili con buone capacità di navigazione. Si trattava innanzitutto del trabaccolo con il 14,55% di presenza nei documenti, poi della tartana (11,49%), del pielego (8,06%), della polacca (6,23%), della marciliana (6,18%), della feluca (5,10%), della barca (4,86%), della checcia (2,21%) e della brazzera (2,01%). I velieri minori, ovvero piccoli e medi, di portata inferiore alle 300 t, rappresentavano perfino il 70,82% di tutti i bastimenti nominati, mentre i velieri maggiori, di portata superiore alle 310 t, fra cui le grandi navi/nave ovvero vascelli (15,33%) ed i fregatoni (4,36%) avevano mantenuto il 20,65% del traffico marittimo, soprattutto verso le Isole Ionie ed altri porti mediterranei. Tramite l’analisi comparata delle loro caratteristiche e peculiarità verrà dimostrato che fra i porti delle coste orientali e occidentali dell’Adriatico nel Settecento vi era un intenso commercio quotidiano e che tale traffico era caratterizzato da un forte dinamismo del piccolo e medio ceto imprenditoriale che è riuscito ad imporsi sia nel commercio marittimo che nella costruzione navale che ha interessato ambo le coste adriatiche.

Zrinka Podhraški Čizmek è nata a Zagabria nel 1970, cresciuta a Padova dove ha studiato Lingua e letteratura italiana con indirizzo storico-religioso, trasferitasi a Zagabria si laurea in Storia e Lingua e letteratura italiana.
Dal 2010 collabora con l'Archivio di Stato Croato al progetto dei Regesti marittimi croati del XVIII secolo, il cui III vol. con 4.000 fonti inedite pubblica nel 2017 come edizione della Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia di Split.
Nel 2018 discute la sua tesi di dottorato Pellegrinaggi e pellegrini a Loreto e Assisi nei Regesti marittimi croati del XVIII secolo: l'ermeneutica antropologica dei viaggi religiosi. È traduttrice ed interprete di lingua italiana; membro della Matica hrvatska, e, fra l’altro, del comitato organizzativo della Jewish Studies Winter School di Dubrovnik con Mihal Brandl e Andrea Feldman. Suo campo di ricerca sono il Codice marittimo diplomatico croato (con circa 100.000 fonti), i pellegrinaggi, l'antropologia del sacro, i tipi di navigli, gli Ebrei nel Settecento. Sta compilando il IV vol. dei Regesti marittimi croati del XVIII secolo con ulteriori 4.000 fonti – il tutto all’interno di un’ampia arcata digitale per una veloce e precisa ricerca dei finora 16.000 documenti adriatici pubblicati.
Nel 2020 è stata eletta Research associate e, nel 2021, Assistant professor presso il Dipartimento di Storia della Facoltà di Studi Croati dove, dal semestre estivo 2020/21, tiene il corso Navigli croati in Età moderna.
Ha pubblicato finora 16 lavori storiografici, di cui un libro con 4.000 fonti inedite in italiano, ed una monografia scientifica, Navigli adriatici fra le due sponde nel Settecento, Pesaro 2021. Ha partecipato a 16 congressi ed a 11 presentazioni del III vol. dei Regesti marittimi croati del Settecento.

Ο Νικόλαος Ασπιώτης είναι κυρίως γνωστός στην ελληνική ιστοριογραφία ως ο δημιουργός των αντιγράφων της Ουρανίας του Παναγιώτη Δοξαρά στο ναό του Αγίου Σπυρίδωνα στην Κέρκυρα, ενώ ελάχιστες είναι οι πληροφορίες που διαθέτουμε για τη ζωή και την περαιτέρω δράση του. Η συντηρητική τέχνη του, η σχεδόν αποκλειστικά θρησκευτική θεματογραφία του και η αδυναμία του να συμβαδίσει με τις καλλιτεχνικές εξελίξεις στο νεοσύστατο ελληνικό κράτος συντέλεσαν στον παραμερισμό του Ασπιώτη στο περιθώριο της ιστορίας της νεότερης ελληνικής τέχνης ή στην πλήρη αποσιώπηση του έργου του. Στην πραγματικότητα, ωστόσο, ο Νικόλαος Ασπιώτης υπήρξε ένας από τους παραγωγικότερους ζωγράφους της εποχής του, που αν και απέτυχε να καθιερωθεί στο ελληνικό καλλιτεχνικό στερέωμα, κατόρθωσε να αναδειχτεί έξω από τα σύνορα των Επτανήσων, στην ευρύτερη επικράτεια της Αδριατικής. Συγκεκριμένα, καθ' όλη τη διάρκεια του δεύτερου μισού του 19 ου αιώνα ο Νικόλαος Ασπιώτης ζωγράφισε πάνω από τριάντα ναούς και άφησε πολυάριθμα έργα σε μία εντυπωσιακή γεωγραφική επικράτεια που εκτείνεται από το Μαυροβούνιο και τη Δαλματία έως την ιταλική χερσόνησο. Το πελατειακό του δίκτυο περιλάμβανε ορθόδοξους οικισμούς, εκκλησιαστικά ιδρύματα και ιδιώτες, ακόμη και την ίδια τη βασιλική οικογένεια του Μαυροβουνίου. Αν και η ποιότητα της δουλειάς του κυμαινόταν ανάλογα με τις απαιτήσεις της εκάστοτε παραγγελίας, το σύνολο του έργου του διακρίνεται από τη σταθερή, σχεδόν μηχανική επανάληψη των ίδιων επιτυχημένων προτύπων. Δεν είναι τυχαίο, άλλωστε, ότι ο Ασπιώτης αποφάσισε τελικά να καταπιαστεί με τη βιομηχανική παραγωγή, ιδρύοντας στην Κέρκυρα το πρώτο μονοπωλιακό εργοστάσιο παραγωγής παιγνιοχάρτων δικού του σχεδιασμού. Στην παρούσα ανακοίνωση θα επιχειρηθεί μια πρώτη προσέγγιση του άγνωστου μέχρι σήμερα καλλιτεχνικού έργου του Νικόλαου Ασπιώτη στα Επτάνησα και την Αδριατική με στόχο την ανασύσταση των βασικών σημείων της διαδρομής του, των συνθηκών λειτουργίας του εργαστηρίου του, καθώς και την ανίχνευση πιθανών συνεργασιών με ντόπιους καλλιτέχνες και τεχνίτες στους τόπους εργασίας του. Επιπλέον, θα εξεταστεί η επίδραση της τέχνης του Ασπιώτη στη ζωγραφική του Μαυροβουνίου και θα ενταχθεί η καλλιτεχνική παραγωγή του ζωγράφου στο πλαίσιο των αμφίδρομων πολιτισμικών ανταλλαγών που διενεργούνταν στον ενιαίο θαλάσσιο χώρο του Ιονίου και της Αδριατικής, σχέσεις που είχαν καλλιεργηθεί ήδη από την εποχή της Βενετοκρατίας και επιβίωσαν μετά την κατάλυση της Γαληνότατης Δημοκρατίας. Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο θα συζητηθεί επίσης το ζήτημα της επίδρασης της επτανησιακής τέχνης, που αν και υπήρξε περιορισμένη στο νεοσύστατο ελληνικό κράτος, φαίνεται ότι ίσως ήταν εντονότερη και διαρκέστερη στις γειτονικές χώρες της Αδριατικής.

Εκτεταμένη μελέτη που εξετάζει εξονυχιστικά όλο το έργο του Λασκαράτου από μια θεατρική οπτική. Προηγείται μια βιογραφική παρουσίαση, εστιασμένη στα γεγονότα που συνδέουν τον συγγραφέα με τη θεατρική δραστηριότητα της εποχής του: μαθητικά και φοιτητικά χρόνια στην Κεφαλονιά, την Κέρκυρα, στο Παρίσι και στην Πίζα, συμμετοχή σε θίασο, συγγραφή θεατρικών έργων και σχετική αρθρογραφία. Τα στοιχεία που συγκεντρώνονται δείχνουν ότι ο Λασκαράτος  δεν ήταν άσχετος από τη θεατρική ζωή του νησιού του, αλλά προσηλωμένος περισσότερο στην κοινωνική σάτιρα της καθημερινής ζωής. Διατυπώνονται κάποιες γενικές εκτιμήσεις για το πεζογραφικό και ποιητικό του έργο, για την αρθρογραφία του, καθώς και για τη μεγάλη του συμβολή στη διαμόρφωση του δημοτικιστικού κινήματος.. Αναζητούνται οι πηγές του σατιρικού του πνεύματος και ερμηνεύεται η αντίθεσή του προς το ριζοσπαστικό κίνημα των Επτανήσων, ως αντίδραση στη δημαγωγία. Εξετάζονται στη συνέχεια ορισμένα άρθρα του που σχετίζονται με τη χρησιμότητα του θεάτρου στην κεφαλονίτικη κοινωνία ή με ορισμένα θεατρόμορφα έθιμα (Άρατε πύλας, νεκρικές πομπές κ.ά.). Η σκέψη του κινείται γύρω από μια κοινωνική και ηθική δεοντολογία: θα απορρίψει κάποιες θρησκευτικές τελετές επειδή θυμίζουν παγανιστικά έθιμα, ενώ θα υποστηρίξει τις θεατρικές παραστάσεις που προσφέρουν μιαν αθώα διασκέδαση, καθώς ξεκουράζουν το πνεύμα του θεατή ή αναπτύσσουν τις νοητικές και συναισθηματικές του δυνάμεις και ενισχύουν την ηθική του συνείδηση με δύο συμπληρωματικούς τρόπους έναν θετικό και έναν αρνητικό: από τη μια μεριά, καταπραΰνοντας τα πάθη και αμβλύνοντας τις μικρότητές του μέσα στο ευρύτερο ευγενές περιβάλλον της καλλιτεχνίας και, από την άλλη, παριστώντας του επί σκηνής τα παραστρατήματα και τις αδυναμίες των ανθρώπων.  Στη συνέχεια εξετάζονται οι θεατρικές αναφορές, οι σύντομες θεατρικές μεταφορές που βρίσκονται διασκορπισμένες στα Άπαντα του συγγραφέα, καθώς και η χρήση συναφών γλωσσικών τύπων («θεατρινίζω», «θεατρίσματα» κ.ά.), περιγράφονται οι εικόνες της θεατρικής ζωής και οι σατιρικές αιχμές του στις κοσμικότητες της εποχής, εκτίθενται όλες οι πτυχές του παιδαγωγικού προβληματισμού του. Διαπιστώνεται ότι οι αρνητικές χρήσεις της θεατρικής μεταφοράς, που υποσκάπτουν το κύρος μιας τέχνης διαδεδομένης ευρύτατα στον επτανησιακό χώρο, κατέχουν πράγματι το μεγαλύτερο ποσοστό των θεατρικών του αναφορών. Πλην όμως, σε καμία περίπτωση δεν στοχεύουν τη δραματική ποίηση, ενώ ακόμα και όταν σκοπεύουν να πλήξουν το θέατρο γενικά, συχνά δεν αναφέρονται σε μια οργανωμένη θεατρική παράσταση δράματος ή όπερας, αλλά σε εκδηλώσεις επιδεικτικής δεξιότητας, σε ταχυδακτυλουργούς, εγγαστρίμυθους, χορευτές ή τραγουδιστές. Ακολουθεί η ανάλυση των δύο θεατρικών του έργων: Πτώσις της Τρωάδος και Δικανικές κατάχρησες. Στο πρώτο περιγράφεται ο διάλογος του Οδυσσέα με τον Πρίαμο, λίγο προτού καταστραφεί η Τροία και χαρακτηρίζεται από μια μοντέρνα ρεαλιστική ματιά. Ο λόγος του Πριάμου απομακρύνεται για λίγο από τις φλόγες της Τροίας για να έρθει εγγύτερα προς την Κεφαλονιά της «αγγλικής προστασίας» και την Ελλάδα. Στο δεύτερο σατιρίζονται σκληρά οι ατασθαλίες στον δικηγορικό χώρο. Και τα δύο κείμενα λειτουργούν ως παραδείγματα της αισθητικής σκέψης του Λασκαράτου, που χαρακτηρίζεται από τις αριστοτελικές καταβολές της. Το θέατρο έχει πάντα μπροστά του ηθικοδιδακτικούς στόχους και γι’ αυτό πρέπει να παρουσιάζει μόνο ό,τι θεμελιώνει τις ηθικές αρχές και συμβάλλει στη βελτίωση της κοινωνίας. Οι επιδράσεις του Διαφωτισμού, ελληνικού και ευρωπαϊκού είναι εδώ εμφανείς. Ακολουθούν αναλύσεις των θεατρικών στοιχείων σε τρεις σατιρικούς  διαλόγους του συγγραφέα, το εκτενές παρωδιακό ποίημα Καυγάς μεταξύ Αγαμέμνονος και Αχιλέως, καθώς και οι δύο μεγάλες σατιρικές συνθέσεις του Κολιατσιάδα και Μετά την Κολιατσιάδα. Η μελέτη καταλήγει στο συμπέρασμα ότι κάτω από το βαρύ κείμενο της αυστηρής λασκαρατικής σάτιρας λανθάνει η ειρωνική ύπαρξη ενός θεάτρου απραγματοποίητου.

Much research since ancient times has sought to locate Odysseus’ Ithaca, described by Homer as being west of an island group. Numismatic evidence seems to have been largely neglected, even though it preserves mythology and traditions from the distant past. This paper surveys the coins of the most commonly accepted region of Ithaca, the islands of the Ionian Sea west of Greece. Minting began there in about 500 BC, less than three centuries after Homer’s composition of the Odyssey as we know it. Coins that illustrate gods, characters, and symbols are selected and ranked by the significance of their associations with Ithaca as described in the Odyssey. The results seem to support the location of Ithaca in the area of western Kephalonia.

Examined synoptically in this paper are the principal phases in the history of the United States of the Ionian Islands. For practical reasons the fifty years of British protection are divided into three main periods, on the criterion of the degree of difficulties the Protectorate encountered and the corresponding modifications to its policies:
I) The first phase (1815-1848) is characterized as the phase of “despotism”. No serious doubts were cast on the British Protection, even though certain difficulties had begun to appear, on account of the Greek War of Independence (1821 onward), the founding of the Greek State (1830) and the bolstering of national sentiment in the Ionian Islands.
II) During the interval 1848-1859, clashes between the British “Protection” and the local population came to a head. In 1848-1849 the parliamentary opposition acquired a second party (after the Liberal), the Radical, which became more and more persistent in its demand for Union with Greece. When all the tactics of the High Commissioners proved ineffective, the British Government sent Gladstone to the islands as extraordinary High Commissioner, in order to examine the situation first hand and to take those measures that would ensure the maintenance of British rule.
III) Gladstone’s proposed reforms were rejected by the Ionian Parliament. The British were persuaded that it was now neither possible nor in their interests to keep the islands under their control. Henceforth (1861 onward) the British-Ionian administration was to play a purely managerial role, which sometimes appeared almost passive, whilst biding time for a suitable opportunity to divest themselves of the Ionian Islands on the best possible terms.

From its beginnings, Greece was founded and based on the principle and constitutional dictate of full emancipation and freedom of Religion for all its citizens.  Greece was attacked by Italy in 1940 and beat her in the field.  The German Reich invaded and occupied all of Greece on April 1941.  The country was divided in 3 occupation zones:  German, Italian (up to September 1943) and Bulgarian.  The Quisling governments supported the Jewish Greek citizens, albeit with no success.  The Church supported fully the Jews.  Also many were saved by joining the Resistance in the mountains.  The overwhelming majority of the non-Jewish population was sympathetic to the plight.  The Holocaust proceeded differently in various localities and not simultaneously.  In smaller cities-communities full integration of the Jews into them coupled also with historical tolerance was instrumental in rescue.

In 1770, in the immediate aftermath of the Orlov Revolt in the Ottoman Peloponnese, islanders from Zante and Cephalonia, subjects of the Venetian Republic who were involved in the uprising, were driven back to their homelands by the Muslim Albanian contingents that fought against them. Upon their return, these individuals challenged the islands’ social order and controlling them became a matter of high priority for the local authorities. One such individual was the peasant Nicolin Fortuni, who, after leading the islanders’ invasion of Ottoman Gastouni in March 1770, returned to Zante and became a notorious brigand. A reconstruction of Fortuni’s activities after the revolt offers new insights into the birth of Ionian Russophilism before the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797.
