Greek Cinema

The perception of Greek movies by the audiences, as well as, the various ways through which, the movies affect the audiences’ consciousness are important factors within film studies. They are, however, significantly understudied, especially with regard to Greek popular cinema. They have garnered virtually no research interest although Greek popular cinema is given, recently, much attention. Most relevant film studies in Greece lay emphasis either on context or on merely film analysis. Therefore, there are no studies attempting to explore the interplay between film and audience and especially how this interplay is formed in reference both to the audience’s representation of cinema as spectacle, and to the subjects’ lived experience.
My presentation will show the interaction between Greek popular cinema and its audience, based on the agents’ lived experience recorded in a corpus of in-depth interviews that have been taken during the last eight years. Hence, I will problematise the methodological presuppositions regarding the examination of the audience’s response to Greek popular cinema, specifically of the Greek film audiences of the past. In this effort the methodological tool of cultural memory is very useful (see specialy the works of Annette Kuhn). My analysis will focus in the case study of melodrama, one of the two most important popular genres, along with comedy, in the Greek cinema of this period. In this sense, I find myself currying out the search of the “Structure of feeling” (Raymond Williams) that is, the cultural elements of Greek society during the 1950’s and 1960’s, through the perception of popular films.

A filmic guidebook of the Greek capital, World Film Locations: Athens takes readers to film locations in the central historical district, with excursions to the periphery of Athens—popular neighborhoods, poor suburbs, and slums often represented in postwar neorealist films—and then on to garden cities and upper-class suburbs, especially those preferred by the auteurs of the 1970s. Of course, no Grecian vacation would be complete without a visit to the sea, and summer resorts, hotels, and beaches near Athens are frequent backdrops for international productions. However, more recent economic strife has emptied city neighborhoods, created urban violence, and caused an increase in riots in the Mediterranean city, and representations of this on film are juxtaposed with images of the eternal and idyllic city.

Featuring both Greek and foreign productions from various genres and historical periods, the book ultimately works to establish connections between the various aesthetics of dominant representations of Athens.

En el presente artículo el autor se detiene en las primeras apariciones como extra del famoso director de cine greco-chipriota Michael Cacoyannis cuando todavía era sólo un joven estudiante de Derecho en el Londres de los años 50. Siguiendo su trayectoria profesional comprobaremos que su vocación interpretativa queda absorbida en la dirección de los grandes textos clásicos.

Most of the prominent filmmakers of New Greek Cinema – a politicised, auterist and art-oriented trend which dominated the Greek filmscape of the 1970s and 1980s – started their careers as assistant directors and film practitioners in the studios of the Greek commercial film industry of the 1950s and 1960s. Theo Angelopoulos, one of New Greek Cinema’s leading directors, followed, however, a different path and entered the field professionally as a film intellectual. After studying filmmaking in Paris, he returned to Athens and, from 1964 to 1967, worked as a film critic for the newspaper Δημοκρατική Αλλαγή (Democratic Change), while between 1969 and 1971 he contributed occasionally to the journal Σύγχρονος Κινηματογράφος (Contemporary Cinema). The time frame of Angelopoulos’s critical activity is particularly intriguing since the 1960s were the formative years of New Greek Cinema. It was also a period of political upheaval and instability in Greece, of exceptional vitality in the arts and, in terms of production and attendance, unparalleled growth of the domestic film culture. This chapter focuses on the most intensive period of Angelopoulos’s critical writing – his criticism for Democratic Change – during the turbulent but creative pre-dictatorship 1960s. It attempts to throw light upon unknown aspects of his cinéphile background; to trace critical attitudes, emerging ideas, early tastes, and unexplored influences; and to consider how his criticism relates to his eventual ideas on cinema and filmmaking practices.

Το βιβλίο αυτό αποτελεί την πρώτη επιστημονική μονογραφία για το κινηματογραφικό έργο του Τάκη Κανελλόπουλου, του ξεχωριστού δημιουργού από τη Θεσσαλονίκη που χάρισε στον ελληνικό κινηματογράφο ταινίες όπως ο Μακεδονικός γάμος (1960), ο Ουρανός (1962), η Εκδρομή (1966), η Παρένθεση (1968), το Χρονικό μίας Κυριακής (1975) και το Ρομαντικό σημείωμα (1978). Συνδυάζοντας διακειμενικές και φορμαλιστικές αναλύσεις, η μελέτη εξετάζει το έργο του Κανελλόπουλου μέσα στο ιστορικό και καλλιτεχνικό πλαίσιό του και εξηγεί τους τρόπους με τους οποίους ο σκηνοθέτης απέκλινε από παραδοσιακές πρακτικές και πρότεινε την προσωπική του εκδοχή για έναν καλλιτεχνικό κινηματογράφο. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, το βιβλίο φωτίζει τις ταινίες του Κανελλόπουλου σε σχέση με εθνολογικές και ιστορικές μελέτες της εποχής, με τη λογοτεχνική και εικαστική παραγωγή της γενέτειράς του και με παράλληλες κινηματογραφικές εξελίξεις στην ανατολική και δυτική Ευρώπη· παρακολουθεί και σχολιάζει την πρόσληψη των ταινιών του από την κριτική της εποχής· και αναλύει τις αφηγηματικές και υφολογικές τεχνικές με τις οποίες ο Κανελλόπουλος μετουσίωσε τις προσλαμβάνουσές του σε έναν μοντερνιστικό κινηματογράφο που αποτύπωσε με εκφραστικότητα τον αιώνιο ανθρώπινο πόνο -στον πόλεμο, στον έρωτα, στην κάθε μορφής απώλεια και στην αναπόληση του παρελθόντος.

This is the first scholarly monograph on the cinema of Takis Kanellopoulos, the distinguished Greek film auteur, who endowed Greek cinema with such films as Macedonian Wedding (1960), Sky  (1962), Excursion (1966), Interlude (1968), Memories of a Sunday (1975) and  Romantic Note (1978). By combining intertextual and formalist analyses, this study examines Kanellopoulos' work within its historical and artistic contexts and explains the ways in which the director departed from traditional practices and proposed his own version of art film. More specifically, the book illuminates Kanellopoulos' films in relation to ethnological and historical studies of his time, to the literature and painting of Thessaloniki (Kanellopoulos' birthplace), and to parallel developments in eastern and western European cinema. The book also  traces and comments on the reception of his films;  and analyzes the narrative and stylistic techniques through which Kanellopoulos sublimated various influences into a modernist cinema that expressively rendered the eternal human suffering --in war, in love, in loss of any kind, and in the recollection of the past.

Η εργασία είναι ανάθεση του Κέντρου Μελετών και Ερευνών για το Σινεμά (ΚΕΜΕΣ) στη Θεσσαλονίκη και αποτελεί κεφάλαιο της συλλογικής έκδοσης, με τίτλο «50 χρόνια Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου: Οι ταινίες που αγαπήσαμε», η οποία περιλαμβάνει δοκιμιακά κείμενα ερευνητών, σκηνοθετών και δημοσιογράφων για τις καλύτερες ελληνικές ταινίες που προβλήθηκαν στις πέντες δεκαετίες της διοργάνωσης. Η έκδοση κυκλοφόρησε το Νοέμβριο του 2009 από το ΚΕΜΕΣ και τις εκδόσεις Ερωδιός, σε επιμέλεια του κριτικού κινηματογράφου Δημοσθένη Ξιφιλίνου, με αφορμή τον εορτασμό του επετειακού 50ού Φεστιβάλ Κινηματογράφου Θεσσαλονίκης (13-29 Νοεμβρίου 2009).
Η εργασία μου προτείνει μια κειμενική ανάλυση της ταινίας «Γάμος αλά ελληνικά» (1964) του Βασίλη Γεωργιάδη, η οποία προβλήθηκε στην 5η Εβδομάδα Ελληνικού Κινηματογράφου Θεσσαλονίκης (1964) και κέρδισε το βραβείο Α΄ γυναικείου ρόλου για την ερμηνεία της πρωταγωνίστριας Ξένιας Καλογεροπούλου.
Μολονότι ανήκει στον δημοφιλή κινηματογράφο και ακολουθεί τα πρότυπα της εμπορικής παραγωγής, η ταινία διαθέτει σημαντικές καλλιτεχνικές αρετές, που εντοπίζονται στον σκηνοθετικό χειρισμό ενός ιδιαίτερα επίκαιρου θέματος (οι επιπτώσεις της αστικοποίησης στην καθημερινή ζωή), καθώς και στις επιμέρους ιδεολογικές σημάνσεις του (προβολή μιας διαφορετικής οπτικής για τους έμφυλους ρόλους).

The chapter uses the concepts of  ‘economy’ and ‘ecology’ to map out the landscape of Greek cinema since the crisis. Drawing on industry data and interviews with filmmakers, distributors and cinema owners, it explores the effects of the cultural politics of austerity on the production, circulation and reception of Greek films. Syllas Tzoumerkas’ A Blast (2014) serves as a case study to illustrate some of the connections and interactions that enable a film from Greece to be made and shown in crisis-ridden times.

Το βιβλίο αυτό διερευνά τα στάδια και τις εκφάνσεις της πολύπτυχης και ελάχιστα γνωστής σχέσης του Άγγελου Τερζάκη, κορυφαίου εκπροσώπου της πολυσυζητημένης γενιάς του 1930, µε τον κινηματογράφο. Παρουσιάζονται και σχολιάζονται τα πολυάριθμα –δημοσιευμένα σε περιοδικά και εφημερίδες– κείμενα που ο Τερζάκης αφιερώνει στον κινηματογράφο, συζητώντας για ταινίες, σκηνοθέτες, ηθοποιούς, κινηματογραφικά κινήματα, ζητήματα κινηματογραφικής αισθητικής, καθώς και για τη σχέση του κινηματογράφου µε την πεζογραφία και το θέατρο. Εξετάζεται ο πολύπλευρος διάλογος, άλλοτε φανερός και άλλοτε κρυπτικός, του πεζογραφικού και δραματουργικού έργου του συγγραφέα µε τον κινηματογράφο. Αναλύεται η Νυχτερινή περιπέτεια (1954), η μοναδική κινηματογραφική ταινία που σκηνοθετεί ο Τερζάκης, συσχετίζεται µε το ευρύτερο έργο του δημιουργού της και σχολιάζεται η κριτική υποδοχή της, ενώ παράλληλα αξιοποιούνται σχετικά δημοσιεύματα του Τύπου της εποχής και σημειώσεις που εντοπίζονται στο αρχείο του συγγραφέα, το οποίο βρίσκεται στη Γεννάδειο Βιβλιοθήκη. Μελετώνται τα πέντε ακόμη κινηματογραφικά σενάρια ή σχέδια σεναρίου που γράφει ο δημιουργός κατά τη δεκαετία του 1950-1960, άλλοτε πρωτότυπα και άλλοτε βασισμένα σε δικά του πεζογραφήματα ή θεατρικά έργα. Η έρευνα επιβεβαιώνει ότι η Νυχτερινή περιπέτεια δεν είναι µια απλή και συγκυριακή ενασχόληση του Τερζάκη µε την κινηματογραφική πραγματικότητα της Ελλάδας, αλλά µια φυσική κατάληξη του εντονότατου ενδιαφέροντος αυτού του ανήσυχου πνευματικού ανθρώπου για την έβδομη τέχνη.

Το παρόν άρθρο επιχειρεί να προσεγγίσει τα γλωσσικά παιχνίδια στις ταινίες του Γιώργου Λάνθιμου εστιάζοντας στην παιγνιώδη και αλληγορική φύση της φυσικής γλώσσας, στην αποδομητική της λειτουργία και την παρωδιακή της διάσταση έτσι όπως εμφανίζονται στις ταινίες Κινέττα (2005), Κυνόδοντας (2009), Άλπεις (2011), και Αστακός (2015). Οι εκούσιες γλωσσικές στρεβλώσεις που παρατηρούνται στις εν λόγω ταινίες απορρέουν από την μεταμοντέρνα αντίληψη γύρω από το ίδιο το γλωσσικό νόημα, τη σταθερότητά του και τη δυνατότητα μετάδοσής του.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ Dogtooth (Kynodontas, 2009) exists in the shadow of certain real life cases and, as a film about a dictatorial Greek patriarch, is open to readings of political allegory, but what is most interesting about the film, from a Lacanian perspective, is what it suggests about language and family structure. The film places great emphasis on signifiers and meaning, showing the latter to originate with the father and the paternal regime. This paper will therefore explore the ways in which Dogtooth exposes the structures that determine the subject, and consider them in terms of Lacan’s theories of language, as expressed in ‘On a Question’ and the fifth and sixth Seminars. For Lacan, the paternal metaphor is the basis of the Symbolic order; indeed, Bruce Fink states that the paternal metaphor provides the subject with a symbolic compass reading on the basis of which to adopt an orientation. It is the structure through which meaning as such enters the world. Dogtooth suggests what happens when this compass is broken. Putting a master in the place of the father, the film establishes an alternative (perverse, perhaps even phobic) Symbolic order, based on recognisable signifiers but radically different signifieds. Mark Fisher has described the manipulation of language in Dogtooth as a sort of controlling, Dadaist word play, but the condition here is much more fundamental. Working in a properly psychoanalytic manner – which is to say, to discover what the pathological instance can reveal about the general condition – this paper will explore the relationship between language and the family structure in Dogtooth to demonstrate the way in which the film highlights the repressive and repressing process and power of the paternal metaphor as envisaged by Lacan."

The idea of an authentic Greek national cinema and the notion of Greekness have been passionately and recurrently debated by filmmakers, critics and scholars alike, while inspiring the creation of important films. However, despite being local and national in various ways, Greek cinema did not grow in isolation but has always been in dialogue with international developments. This chapter illustrates how a new and distinctive emphasis on the European, the transnational and the cosmopolitan has gradually become an overarching and, in my view, the most representative characteristic of Greek film culture of the past ten years. It focuses on how different levels of transnationalism (political, cultural, industrial, textual) helped redefine Greek cinema and reintroduce it in the domestic and international markets. It thus provides a contextualising overview of the flourishing post-2008 Greek film culture aiming to briefly explore its major trends and patterns. By doing so, the discussion points to how these trends Europeanise and transnationalise the Greek experience, secure international funding and address non-national audiences, while simultaneously renegotiating national identity. In the process, issues regarding (co-) production, circulation and consumption practices, as well as critical and audience reception, are also considered.

Resumen: TRABAJO DE FIN DE GRADO DE CRISTINA MARTÍNEZ GARÍN. Análisis textual fílmico en el que se analizan dos de las obras del director griego Yorgos Lanthimos, destacado por la creación de mundos distópicos, en los que la represión sexual y la tiranía encuentran su lugar provocado por un miedo imperante en la sociedad que obliga a los individuos a actuar de manera atípica.

The purpose of this article is to reconsider philosophical issues that are crucial in Yorgos Lanthimos’ movie “Dogtooth” and can be useful in contemporary debate about norms and rules determining the constitution of the self. After a short synopsis of the movie and a description of the extraordinary aesthetics of the picture, I will focus on philosophical and literary contexts of “Dogtooth”. I will provide some references to Jean Jacques Rousseau and his novel about education and citizenship entitled “Emile, or On Education”, but also to Michel Foucault’s “On the Government of the Living”. An unexpected context will be a Polish novel from the age of Enlightenment written by Michał Dymitr Krajewski “Podolanka wychowana w stanie natury, życie i przypadki swe opisująca” (“Podolanka Raised in State of the Nature Describing Her Life and Experiences”). This juxtaposition might be at first sight surprising, but in fact it will be very helpful in interpretation of the discussed movie. The next part of the article will focus on the most harmful aspects of the world depicted in “Dogtooth”, where forms of sexuality, language and isolation are a practical realization of the norms laid down by parents. This chapter explores two main ideas – normativity and authenticity – drawing upon the movie. I will rethink the relationship between them and their impact on understanding of the self. In the very last part we will try to draw conclusions.

Σημαντικές διαδρομές στην ιστορία του ελληνικού σινεμά φωτίζει η νέα πολυσυλλεκτική έκδοση με τίτλο «Από τον πρώιμο στο σύγχρονο ελληνικό κινηματογράφο: Ζητήματα μεθοδολογίας, θεωρίας, ιστορίας», που κυκλοφόρησε πρόσφατα σε επιμέλεια Μαρίας Παραδείση και Αφροδίτης Νικολαΐδου από τις εκδόσεις Gutenberg. Το βιβλίο είναι μια απόπειρα διερεύνησης της εγχώριας κινηματογραφικής παραγωγής μέσα από θεωρητικές και κριτικές προσεγγίσεις, που συνδυάζουν τις κινηματογραφικές σπουδές με διάφορα επιστημονικά πεδία (ιστοριογραφία, κοινωνιολογία, ανθρωπολογία, πολεοδομία, μουσικολογία, σπουδές φύλου), με κοινό παρονομαστή το ενδιαφέρον για το ελληνικό σινεμά. Η έκδοση φιλοδοξεί να παρουσιάσει και να αναλύσει από όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερες οπτικές γωνίες τον ελληνικό κινηματογράφο ως πολιτιστικό-καλλιτεχνικό φαινόμενο που αντικατοπτρίζει την κοινωνική, πολιτική, οικονομική και πολιτιστική διαδρομή της Ελλάδας.

Il genere drammatico e, in modo specifico, le antiche tragedie greche rappresentano in ambito accademico la migliore possibilità per addentrarsi nello studio dei testi classici greco-latini. Non dobbiamo dimenticare che le radici della nostra cultura si fondano principalmente sul Cristianesimo, ma anche in gran parte sulla cultura greca e romana. In questo senso, esistono legami evidenti nello stretto rapporto tra la purificazione dell'anima degli spettatori (la catarsis definita dal filosofo Aristotele) e la conversione dei primi cristiani con l'annuncio (kérygma) della morte e resurrezione di Gesù Cristo. Se si pretende una lettura individuale di questo tipo di testi antichi con nuove traduzioni nelle lingue moderne o in antiche edizioni già disponibili, si tradisce la volontà degli autori, visto che i loro versi non furono concepiti per questo scopo, ma per essere rappresentati all'aria aperta in teatri appositamente costruiti. Una tragedia greca, quindi, nella sua vera dimensione è un'esperienza collettiva priva della possibilità di separare il testo recitato dalla musica e dai silenzi, dallo scenario, dalle maschere e dai costumi degli attori. Per questo motivo, il metodo migliore per studiare la poesia drammatica è assistere a una rappresentazione in un teatro greco o romano. Ma non sempre è possibile trovare l'occasione per contemplare un'antica tragedia greca e, in questo caso, un adattamento cinematografico può risultare utile e, spesso, molto interessante. Fortunatamente, abbiamo a disposizione un numero sempre maggiore di pubblicazioni che dimostrano l'importanza dello studio delle impronte greche e romane nelle nostre manifestazioni artistiche, nella moda, in architettura, nell'opera, nei comics, nel balletto, nella musica e nel cinema. Gli studi di ricezione classica sono aumentati in maniera vertiginosa negli ultimi dieci anni sia nelle università che negli istituti europei e americani. Nel caso specifico del rapporto della tragedia greca con il cinema abbiamo a disposizione i volumi di Marianne McDonald e Kenneth KacKinnon o i più recenti di Pantelis Michelakis, Konstantinos Nikoloutsos e Martin M. Cartellone pubblicitario del film Elettra (archivio dell'Autore) È appassionante evidenziare la abbondantissima filmografia a disposizione in questo senso, centinaia di film di epoche e nazionalità diverse ispirate, in qualche modo, alle antiche tragedia greche e disponibili attualmente su Internet (Valverde 2016). Dal cinema muto in poi esistono valide versioni tra cui l'adattamento del Prometeo incatenato di Eschilo, diretta da Dimitris Gaziadis nell'anno 1927 nel teatro di Delfi. Ma probabilmente, risultano molto più interessanti i film degli anni 60 del secolo passato, le produzioni italiane di Visconti (Vaghe stelle dell'Orsa), Cavani (I cannibali) e Pasolini (Edipo re, Medea) o le greche di Tzavellas (Antigone) e Dassin (Fedra), fino agli ultimi film di Yorgos Lanthimos che offrono allo spettatore suggestive riletture delle antiche tragedie greche su uno sfondo di terrore psicologico (The Lobster, The Killing of a sacred deer). La nostra lunga esperienza di anni dedicati allo studio del dramma antico attico con giovani studenti di greco classico ci ha insegnato che i risultati più interessanti derivano dall'uso in aula della trilogia del regista greco-cipriota Michael Cacoyannis e dalle sceneggiature di tre opere di Euripide, curiosamente l'autore classico che più ha ispirato i registi. Si tratta di Elettra (1962), Le Troiane (1971) e Ifigenia (1977), dove l'attrice greca Irene Papas incarna il legame imprescindibile tra lo spirito degli antichi testi e la materializzazione artistica contemporanea. Non è nostra intenzione offrire un'analisi esaustiva di questi tre film e, rimandiamo in questo senso, alle pubblicazioni indicate in bibliografia (Bakogianni, Valverde). Il nostro obiettivo è quello di evidenziare l'enorme valore pedagogico di queste opere d'arte che, secondo l'opinione di molti critici letterari e cinematografici, hanno addirittura superato i testi originali. È curioso che, in una conversazione mantenuta qualche tempo fa con Irene Papas, l'attrice si lamentasse di non aver potuto studiare il greco antico. Il suo contatto con la tragedia greca risale alla sua prima tappa di formazione come attrice nella Scuola Nazionale di Teatro di Atene, utilizzando sempre traduzioni dei grandi classici dal greco moderno. Anni dopo il suo debutto nel cinema e il successo internazionale, prima in film italiani e successivamente negli Stati Uniti con la Metro-Goldwin-Mayer, arriverà il salto definitivo alla fama, considerata come la più grande attrice tragica di tutti i tempi, soprattutto nei

Shooting a film, to the extent that this is possible, should be
a poetic event. Exploring the ideological function of cinema
does not shift the emphasis away from the aesthetics and,
conversely, seeking a particular aesthetic result does not
conflict with the communication of potent ideological-political
beliefs through film. When my film 'Oi Kynighoi' premièred,
it was received with scepticism from certain circles
of the Greek Left. There is a scene where a party of people
in barges drifts downstream, holding red flags and singing.
Someone commented that 'Revolution goes for a stroll',
implying that this overly aesthetic approach was void of
any political meaning. Yet Fyodor Dostoevsky’s claim that
'beauty would save the world' still remains topical. There
is no such thing as a dichotomy between content and form.
Such dilemmas do not exist.

E-book. Η παρούσα μελέτη αποτελεί μια εισαγωγή στον τρόπο δημιουργίας της αφήγησης σε ταινίες μυθοπλασίας, με ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στα στοιχεία της λεγόμενης Κλασικής Αφήγησης, και με ξεχωριστή ενότητα για την αφήγηση

των ταινιών σε Είδη αναφέρεται στη σύμβαση, τη συμφωνία, που γίνεται μεταξύ των δημιουργών της ταινίας, των επενδυτών/ παραγωγών και των θεατών, σχετικά με το τι οι θεατές παρακολουθούν, τι πρέπει να περιμένουν και πώς πρέπει να το αντιληφθούν. Κάθε κριτικός, κάθε εποχή και σχεδόν κάθε ΜΜΕ υιοθετούν ένα δικό τους σύστημα κατηγοριοποίησης των κινηματογραφικών ταινιών που αφορά την κουλτούρα των αναγνωστών του ή των θεατών των ταινιών. Η προσπάθεια των κριτικών και θεωρητικών του
κινηματογράφου για ένα μοντέλο κατάταξης των ταινιών είναι συνεχής και επηρεάζεται κάθε φορά από κυρίαρχες θεωρίες και από την ανάγκη συμπερίληψης όλων των στοιχείων της ταινίας που θεωρούνται κρίσιμα για τον κυρίαρχο κριτικό λόγο. Όμως, η μέθοδος κατάταξης διαφοροποιείται από
τις άλλες προσεγγίσεις, αφού πρόκειται για κατάταξη σε Είδη μόνο με βάση τα αφηγηματικά στοιχεία τους.
Επιπλέον, η μελέτη «Η δημιουργία της μυθοπλαστικής αφήγησης και τα Είδη των κινηματογραφικών ταινιών. Με παραδείγματα από τον Ελληνικό Κινηματογράφο» αποτελεί μια συστηματική προσπάθεια κατηγοριοποίησης
όλων των ταινιών του Ε λληνικού Κινηματογράφου σε Είδη, ίσως η πρώτη σε τέτοια έκταση, με βάση κριτήρια σχετικά με την αφήγησή τους και στο πλαίσιο της σημερινής διεθνούς θεωρίας.
Ως εισαγωγικό, το βιβλίο είναι μια συνοπτική παράθεση θεωριών και παραδειγμάτων, καθώς καθένας από τα βασικούς άξονες της αφήγησης και καθένα από τα Είδη που αναλύονται στα ξεχωριστά κεφάλαια, θα μπορούσε να αποτελέσει ένα βιβλίο από μόνο του. Χωρίζεται σε δύο μέρη. Στo πρώτο
μέρος παρατίθενται τα βασικά χαρακτηριστικά της μυθοπλαστικής αφήγησης (κεφάλαια 1-3) και εξηγούνται βασικοί όροι. Στη συνέχεια, στο δεύτερο μέρος
(κεφάλαια 4-9) διερευνάται πώς αυτή λειτουργεί σε σχέση με την κατηγοριοποίηση των κινηματογραφικών ταινιών μυθοπλασίας σε Είδη (Genres), αναλύοντας εκτεταμένα τις τέσσερις βασικές ομάδες Ειδών που
καλλιεργούνται στην Ελλάδα. Η διερεύνηση γίνεται από την πλευρά του
δημιουργού της αφήγησης, που είναι στην πράξη ο σεναριογράφος, δηλαδή ο υπεύθυνος να οργανώσει και συγγράψει το βασικό κείμενο που περιλαμβάνει
τα θεμέλια της αφήγησης μιας ταινίας.
Το κεφάλαιο 1 επικεντρώνεται σε ορισμούς και βασικές έννοιες της αφήγησης στα οπτικοακουστικά έργα, ιδίως στις ταινίες, και αποσαφηνίζει όρους που αφορούν τη μυθοπλασία και το σενάριο, δηλαδή το κείμενο που οργανώνει την αφήγηση. Προσφέρει ακόμη, μια περιληπτική επισκόπηση των
βασικών αφηγηματικών κατηγοριών στα δύο βασικά και παραδοσιακά μέσα διανομής και προβολής αφηγηματικών έργων, την τηλεόραση και τον κινηματογράφο, καθώς και μια συνοπτική περιγραφή της αφήγησης στα έργα
για τηλεόραση.
Στο κεφάλαιο 2 παρατίθενται οι καθιερωμένες αντιλήψεις σχετικά με τη λειτουργία της Σεναριακής Ιδέας και τον ρόλο που έχουν οι Χαρακτήρες στην εξέλιξη της Πλοκής σε ταινίες Κλασικής αφήγησης όλων των Ειδών.
Στο κεφάλαιο 3 εξετάζεται ο ρόλος που έχει η συγκρότηση της Δομής στην εξέλιξη της Πλοκής με την τριμερή Αριστοτελική προσέγγγιση, με γραμμικό ή εναλλακτικό τρόπο.
Στο κεφάλαιο 4 προτείνεται και αναπτύσσεται η βασική θεωρία της κατηγοριοποίησης σε Είδη γενικότερα και, στη συνέχεια, με βάση την αφήγηση: σε αντιδιαστολή με τις γενικές θεωρίες των Ειδών και συνδυάζοντας σύγχρονες θεωρίες, η παρούσα μελέτη ταξινομεί τις ταινίες με βάση τη διαφοροποίησή τους ως προς το βασικό πυρήνα της αφήγησης (Χαρακτήρας
Πρωταγωνιστής, Χαρακτήρας Ανταγωνιστή, σχήμα της βασικής δράσης, Καταλυτικό Γεγονός, τρόπος Επίλυσης, αφηγηματικό Ύφος, αφηγηματικός Ρυθμός, δραματικός Τόνος). Αν οι ταινίες διαφέρουν ως προς όλα αυτά τα στοιχεία, τότε ανήκουν σε άλλο Είδος, αν όμως διαφοροποιούνται μόνο ως προς το αφηγηματικό Ύφος, τον αφηγηματικό Ρυθμό ή και τον δραματικό Τόνο, τότε ανήκουν απλώς σε άλλο υποείδος, καθώς αυτά τα στοιχεία θα μπορούσαν, για τη μυθοπλαστική αφήγηση, να θεωρηθούν απλώς ως «πρόσθετες ιδιότητες» (add-ons) ενός βασικού Είδους.
Η θεωρία οδηγεί σε αποτελέσματα αρκετά διαφορετικά από τις γενικές θεωρίες περί Ειδών: για παράδειγμα, με αυτή τη συλλογιστική, από αφηγηματική άποψη δεν υπάρχουν ταινίες Μελό, αλλά Κοινωνικές ή Αισθηματικές Δραματικές ταινίες με πρόσθετο Τόνο Μελό. Δεν υπάρχει αφηγηματικό Είδος Μιούζικαλ, αλλά Ρομαντικές Κωμωδίες ή Δραματικές
ταινίες ή Γουέστερν με πρόσθετο Ύφος Μιούζικαλ. Το Μιούζικαλ δεν θεωρείται αυτόνομο Είδος ως προς την αφήγηση, έστω και αν έχουν γραφτεί χιλιάδες
πονήματα γι’ αυτό. Ακόμη, το Θρίλερ, δεν είναι ξεχωριστό Είδος, αλλά Πρόσθετος Τόνος και Ρυθμός, που μπορεί να αφορά τόσο τις Αστυνομικές, όσο τις ταινίες Τρόμου, τις Επιστημονικής Φαντασίας, τις Περιπέτειες κ.λπ.
Στο δεύτερο μέρος του κεφαλαίου 4 καταγράφονται τα δημοφιλέστερα Είδη διεθνώς, τα οποία δεν καλλιεργούνται ιδιαίτερα στην Ελλάδα που είναι οι ταινίες Γουέστερν, οι Περιπέτειες, οι Πολεμικές ταινίες, οι Αθλητικές, οι Επικές,
οι Βιογραφίες, οι Επιστημονικής Φαντασίας και οι ταινίες Τρόμου.
Στο κεφάλαιο 5 εξετάζονται και συγκρίνονται τα Είδη μέσα στην ιδιαίτερη περίπτωση της ελληνικής κινηματογραφικής βιομηχανίας.
Συγκρίνονται τα Eίδη που ευδοκίμησαν στην ελληνική βιομηχανία κινηματογράφου, τόσο στη μεγάλη ακμή της στη δεκαετία του 1960 όσο και στην πρόσφατη περίοδο που διανύουμε, και σχολιάζεται με παραδείγματα η
εξαφάνιση αρκετών από αυτά.
Στο κεφάλαιο 6 παρατίθεται η θεωρία για τη Δραματική ταινία, ένα δημοφιλέστατο Είδος διεθνώς, και τα υποείδη της. Στη συνέχεια, εξετάζονται οι διάφορες παραλλαγές της και υποείδη που καλλιεργήθηκαν στην Ελλάδα όπως η Αισθηματική, η Κοινωνική, η Μελό, η Ρεαλιστική Κοινωνική ταινία και η
Δραματική ταινία με Τόνο Νοσταλγίας.
To κεφάλαιο 7 αναφέρεται στα κυριότερα μορφικά χαρακτηριστικά της ομάδας ταινιών Κωμωδίας διεθνώς, και παρατίθενται βασικά στοιχεία για τις ελληνικές Κωμωδίες, τα Είδη και υποείδη της, όπως η Κωμωδία Καταστάσεων,
η Ρομαντική Κωμωδία, Η Φαρσοκωμωδία, η Σάτιρα, η Κωμωδία με Ύφος Μιούζικαλ, η «Τρελή» Κωμωδία, η Κωμωδία Νοσταλγίας κ.ά.
Το κεφάλαιο 8 εισάγει τους αναγνώστες στην ομάδα ταινιών
Eγκλήματος και ιδιαίτερα στην Aστυνομική, Υποκόσμου, Εγκληματικής Προσωπικότητας, Νουάρ, Κατασκοπική και Δικαστική ταινία, για τις οποίες έχει αναπτυχθεί μια σχετικά στέρεα παράδοση στην Ελλάδα.
Τέλος, στο κεφάλαιο 9 κατηγοριοποιείται η ταινία Τέχνης ως ξεχωριστό Είδος.
Παρατίθεται εκτεταμένα η βασική θεωρία για την αφήγηση στα ταινίες Τέχνης (Art cinema narration) που αιτιολογεί μια τέτοια κατηγοριοποίηση σε υποείδη, και δίνονται χαρακτηριστικά παραδείγματα ελληνικών ταινιών Τέχνης, ειδικά
από την περίοδο του ΝΕΚ και τον Κινηματογράφο του Δημιουργού που καλλιεργήθηκε τότε.
Οι λέξεις που χρησιμοποιούνται ως όροι στη σεναριογραφία και την αφήγηση (όπως Χαρακτήρας, Πλοκή, Επίλυση κ.λπ.) μπαίνουν με κεφαλαίο.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ Dogtooth (2009) exists in the shadow of certain real life cases and, as a film about a dictatorial Greek patriarch, is open to readings of political allegory; aesthetically, it is a post-Haneke minimal-realist piece, of fixed shots and cramped framing, and it employs an amalgam of professional and non-professional actors; it is also a reflection on the transgressive and liberating possibilities of the cinema itself; but what is most interesting about the film, from a Lacanian perspective, is what it suggests about language and family structure. And so, through concepts such as phobia and the paternal metaphor, as well as alienation and the uncanny – as they are theorized by Lacanian psychoanalysis – this chapter will explore the constitution of the Subject, in and through language, in Dogtooth to reveal – in a properly psychoanalytic manner – what the “pathological” instance here can tell us about the general condition.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ film, Kynodontas (Dogtooth) engages with the spectrum of Freud’s understanding of heimlich/unheimlich. The film is an unsettling exploration into the power of language, the family, control and reality building. Dogtooth is a Greek film depicting the seemingly ordinary lives of a family in suburban Greece. Whilst not typically referred to as a horror film, the director is constantly using techniques to incite a feeling of horror and revulsion in the audience through the feeling of unease that he creates. The film is part of the Greek New Wave cinema, a movement often defined by films which reflect the financial crisis and the social and political problems in contemporary Greece in a rather strange, surreal way (Vellis). This chapter will first explore Dogtooth with regards to Freud’s theory on the uncanny before secondly embarking on an analysis in light of Berger and Luckmann’s understanding of reality. Thirdly, this chapter look at the subversion and manipulation of language used throughout the film as well as the use of the uncanniness in Lanthimos’ depiction of animals. Finally, this chapter will explore the power and control shown in the family structure in Dogtooth.
