Through a 4-study design spanning two countries (United States and Brazil), we establish relationships between psychological authenticity climate and organizationally relevant employee outcomes. In Study 1 and Study 2 we assess the measurement validity of our proposed measure. In Studies 3a and 3b (n = 282; n = 188), we assess the predictive validity of our construct and test our hypothesized model across two time points. Results indicate overall support for our model, with psycho- logical authenticity climate affecting key outcomes like organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs), job satisfaction, and job burnout through organizational identification (OID).

Design/methodology/approach – Drawing from the stewardship theory, the authors develop a model to test the relationships between family relatedness and relational identification to the family firm owner, employee-focused stewardship practices, organizational identification and organizational citizenship behaviors. The authors test the hypotheses using regression and the Preacher and Hayes PROCESS macro on a sample of 292 family firm employees.
Findings – The findings suggest that both relational identification with the family firm owner and employee- focused stewardship practices positively influence organizational identification, and that familial ties to the family firm owner can influence relationships with citizenship behaviors for non-family employees. Originality/value – The authors build on existing literature to investigate how employees identify themselves within a family firm and how stewardship practices from the employee’s perspective (rather than managers’ or founders’ perspectives) can influence organizational identification and citizenship behaviors.

ABSTRACT: A focus on helping others is generally lauded, particularly in medicine, but in the context of a pandemic when health care professionals are facing increased risk, loss, and trauma, this focus can potentially be detrimental. In this study, we sought to (a) examine if health care workers intensely involved in the COVID-19 pandemic are experiencing negative psychological and emotional outcomes, and (b) investigate if helping related factors (prosocial motivation and perceived prosocial impact) exacerbate and mitigate relationships to negative outcomes in a crisis situation. Using data collected from doctors and nurses before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, we examine the relationship between intensity of involvement in the COVID-19 pandemic response and emotional exhaustion and depression, as well as the moderating effects of prosocial motivation and perceived prosocial impact. Data was collected at three time points (T1 and T2 pre-pandemic, and T3 during COVID-19), with prosocial motivation and controls collected at T1/T2 and predictors and outcomes collected during the pandemic. We find that intensity of involvement does associate with emotional exhaustion at work and that higher prosocial motivation exacerbates this relationship. Supplemental analyses suggest that the exposure to self dimension of involvement is positively associated with emotional exhaustion and depression. Understanding the roles of prosocial motivation and prosocial impact in managing regulatory resources has important ramifications for health care workers on the frontlines of health crises responses, as these resources are necessary to manage the associated trauma.

Published research, however, remains inconclusive regarding whether the consequences of excessive Internet use on the individual's life are entirely negative, with some studies supporting such negative effects and others rebutting them. One explanation for these conflicting results may be related to the assumption of cultural homogeneity of Internet users embedded in many existing studies. This study draws on motivational and cultural theories to examine the indirect relationships (via obsessive Internet passion) between three specific Internet uses (for social interaction, entertainment, and Internet idling) and procrastination in two divergent cultures: the United States and Russia. We found that the indirect relationships between Internet use for social interaction and procrastination are culturally contingent, whereas the indirect links between the two other Internet uses and procrastination are culturally invariant. We discuss important implications of our research for theory and practice.

The utilization by organizations in Brazil of managerial technology originated from developed countries can be seen by two perspectives: by the angle of local firms, which adopt foreign administrative models due to pressures of a new competitive context, and by the angle of foreign newcomers, which bring such practices directly from their countries of origin. In both cases, the import of foreign models appears to be troublesome. The objective of this article is, firstly, to discuss why such import occurs; secondly, to show how local characteristics prevent its implementation as planned; and, thirdly, to propose and to illustrate an "anthropophagic method" which can be used when importing foreign managerial technology into emerging countries.

In this study, we examine the effect of influence behavior on organizational commitment from two relational perspectives with employees from Chinese and Western societies. Drawing on relational attribution theory, we develop a multiple mediation model to determine whether the relationships between influence behavior and organizational commitment are meditated by leader–member exchange (LMX) and/or guanxi. We also examine whether the effects vary across the two broad cultural samples. Results indicate the mediating effect is contributed mainly by LMX, not guanxi. Results show no significant cross-cultural differences, suggesting the theoretical framework we propose may be generalizable across cultures. Implications and ideas for future research are provided.

This paper argues that supervisors who consistently use socio-emotional and supportive influence strategies are likely to enhance subordinates’ immediate commitment to the tasks as well as their psychological attachment to the organization. Drawing on the transactional–relational contracts framework, we develop and empirically examine the effects of supervisors’ influence behaviors on two types of commitment. Data collected from 1150 respondents from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Germany, United States and Brazil provided support for the positive relationship between the persuasive influence strategy and both immediate task and organizational commitment. Exploratory analyses of the cultural differences in our sample reveal differences in assertive and relationship-based individual tactics. We thus identified potentially universally endorsed as well as culturally contingent influence tactics in predicting the two types of commitment.

This paper reviews the literature on mainstream, functionalist IHRM and the critical approaches, and theoretically discusses their fit to emerging countries' realities and multilatinas experience. The essay's main objectives and contributions are: (a) to argue that this debate, overly typical of the American-European context, may not be fully applicable to ambiguous and contradictory contexts, such as most developing countries and, particularly, Latin America; (b) to argue that the disputes between both functionalist and critical IHRM theorists, in equally richer countries, is inadequate for other (non-rich-involving) contexts; and (c) to propose redirection possibilities for this debate, particularly, in Latin America.

Drawing from recent criticism on the excessive determinism and simplicity of typical cross-cultural depictions, the study (1) analyzes Brazilian contemporary culture from a historical perspective; (2) summarizes prevailing Brazilian cultural depictions in the literature; (3) proposes a conceptual framework centered on the dynamics between cultural differentiation and homogeneity, putting forth predictions on the potential future shifts of the Brazilian cultural texture along these two extremes; and (4) makes the case for culture research focused further on the study and depiction of multiple national cultures, and on their fluidity over time, rather than on monolithic and stable national cultures.

ERP has been promoted as a management panacea, and has resulted in immense investments by companies around the globe. Not surprisingly, many implementations fail to match expectations. For those dealing with organizational change, the ERP phenomenon may sound uncomfortably familiar: change theorists and practitioners have witnessed the coming and going of management panaceas for quite some time. This study presents an exploratory survey of 28 implementation experiences and discusses reductionism in the realm of ERP implementations. It is argued that by applying complex thinking we may open new avenues to explain these processes.

This article approaches the issue of quality in scientific research within the management field in Brazil. More specifically, it deals with the criteria used in the country to review research presented in scientific conferences or published in journals. At first we discuss the recent quantitative growth of research in the Brazilian management realm, as well as the limitations of such research in terms of quality. Afterwards, we report an empirical investigation, conducted among Brazilian scientific outlets, senior scholars and referees in the field. Such investigation was focused on the utilization of research assessment criteria, and revealed significant diversity in terms of which criteria were used and in terms of the meaning they were given. As a response to such situation, we suggest an Assessment Criteria Model, which could be used to review scientific management research in Brazil. Such model is designed to be generic and adaptable to different contexts and objectives. It is our belief that, to strengthen the field of management research in Brazil, clear and well defined criteria need to be better established. We also believe that the moment has come - after the recent quantitative growth - for us to deeply examine the quality of Brazilian scientific research within the management domain.

That is, according to this perspective, one should not expect consulting firms to adopt those packages themselves. This study empirically investigates such argument, examining - through 40 in-depth interviews - the behavior of consulting services adoption by 20 consulting firms with operations in Brazil.

While exploring the origins of the concept and the trends of its evolution through several fields of knowledge, the authors develop a conceptual framework, which differentiates the many existing perspectives on identity based on two key dimensions: the focal object dimension and the observation dimension. The former distinguishes the object to which the concept is applied (e.g., an individual, a group, an organization etc.); the latter differentiates how identity is observed (from the innerly observed - self - to the external/y observed - image). The combination of these two dimensions defines several quadrants, in which it is possible to portrait the different existing perspectives on identity. At last, the model is expanded with a third dimension (the identity definition), which debates the basic foundations of the concept: of this being something central, distinctive and enduring.

In less than 60 years, however, these historic ties with Europe were drastically changed and North-American references have conquered the virtual whole of the Latin-American universe of references. In the organizational world, this influence is obvious and uncontested: North American references pervade management theory and practice, acting as model and idealized future . The purpose of this article is to discuss the genesis of North-American reference in Brazil’s imaginary and culture, as well as to analyze this influence on local management, from a critical viewpoint. Firstly, the paper briefly summarizes the post-colonialist perspective, its epistemological basis. Secondly, the literature that has previously addressed the issue of foreign reference and influence in the Brazilian imaginary is reviewed. Thirdly, the so called “Americanization” doctrine is summarized from a post-colonialist perspective, and the Americanization of Brazilian Culture is discussed based on historical data. Fourthly, the implications of the Americanization of Brazilian culture on the country’s management and organizational practices are discussed. And lastly, a post-colonialist perspective is used to discuss how the exclusion of local references in favor of North-American ones can be overcome, and how the Brazilian theoretical and organizational dialog with the outside world may be de-dichotomized.

Several sessions, assuming different perspectives, were organized in American and European conferences. In this paper, we offer a multi-dimensional, integrative, framework of the organizational identity construct, encompassing classical and recent theoretical perspectives. We argue that Albert & Whetten’s (1985) definition, by confining identity to only what was “central, distinctive and enduring” in the organization, and by focusing mostly on innate identity at the organizational level, restricted the boundaries of the construct to only one of its multiple possibilities. In the last two decades, the field was flooded by an influx of different concepts of identity that disregarded such precincts, although little taxonomical consensus has yet been attained to deal with the increasing theoretical diversity. The proposed framework superposes five dimensional rings, created by two ontological dimensions – (1) levels of analysis, and (2) observation viewpoints –, and three classical conceptual dimensions – (3) centrality, (4) distinctiveness, and (5) endurance. We also discuss possible uses of the framework and indicate alternatives for future research.

In this paper, we seek to contribute to its theoretical development and propose the construct of legacy identities. We have labeled as legacy identities those persistent identities that: (a) endure overtime, at different levels of concealment or expression, even after transformations had supposedly annihilated them in favor of new (incumbent) identities; and (b) resiliently comprise ideals from the past, collectively representing a type of persistent character of what the organization used to be or had desired to become. The construct is derived from a case study that portrays the long-term, multi-stage, transformation process of an Enron subsidiary. We also indicate the potential contributions of the new construct for academics and practitioners and suggest venues for future research.

This “best practice”, highly disseminated by consultants and other HR pundits, is seem as a key tool to align human capital to business strategy and performance. Its main assumption is that competence mastery at the individual level would drive up unit- or organizational-level performance. Thus rewarding proficiency in individual competencies would be justified by it boosting organizational results. However, few empirical studies tested the empirical validity of this assumption. We conducted a large-scale inquiry involving “live” and consequential competence appraisal data for 682 managers in a large bank.

ABSTRACT:
A focus on helping others is generally lauded, particularly in medicine, but in the context of a pandemic when health care professionals are facing increased risk, loss, and trauma, this focus can potentially be detrimental.

ABSTRACT:
A focus on helping others is generally lauded, particularly in medicine, but in the context of a pandemic when health care professionals are facing increased risk, loss, and trauma, this focus can potentially be detrimental.
We also believe that the moment has come - after the recent quantitative growth - for us to deeply examine the quality of Brazilian scientific research within the management domain.

models originated in developed countries. Such method is termed “organizational
anthropophagy”, and is illustrated by a consulting experience
maintained strong cultural reference ties with Europe: be it with Spain and Portugal,
the former seats of their crowns, be it with France and England, which had, over time,
become the focus of prevalent influence. In less than 60 years, however, these
historic ties with Europe were drastically changed and North-American references
have conquered the virtual whole of the Latin-American universe of references. In
the organizational world, this influence is obvious and uncontested: North American
references pervade management theory and practice, acting as model and idealized
future . The purpose of this article is to discuss the genesis of North-American reference in Brazil’s imaginary and culture, as well as to analyze this influence on local
management, from a critical viewpoint. Firstly, the paper briefly summarizes
the post-colonialist perspective, its epistemological basis. And lastly, a post-colonialist perspective is used to discuss how the exclusion of local references in favor of North-American ones can be overcome, and how the Brazilian theoretical and organizational dialog with the outside world may be de-dichotomized.
by focusing mostly on innate identity at the organizational level, restricted the boundaries of the construct to only one of its multiple possibilities. In the last two decades, the field was flooded by an influx of different concepts of identity that disregarded such precincts, although little taxonomical consensus has yet been attained to deal with the increasing theoretical diversity. The proposed framework superposes five dimensional rings, created by two ontological dimensions – (1) levels of analysis, and (2) observation viewpoints –, and three classical conceptual dimensions – (3) centrality, (4) distinctiveness, and (5)
endurance. We also discuss possible uses of the framework and indicate alternatives for future research.
type of persistent character of what the organization used to be or had desired to become. The construct is derived from a case study that portrays the long-term, multi-stage, transformation process of an Enron subsidiary. We also indicate the potential contributions of the new construct for academics and practitioners and suggest venues for future research.
