Tourism development is strongly associated with the place identity, which defines the tourism profile of the area and its target group. In this respect, planning of special events is an internationally recognized means of promoting tourism and place identity. Special events have to be based on the comparative advantages of each area, such as local gastronomy, ancient culture or tradition. Southern Lakonia has a continuous tradition of producing high-quality agricultural goods, especially citrus foods and olive oil. Moreover, its nodal position in the Aegean-Mediterranean Sea corridor has always enhanced economic and social interaction with other Mediterranean nations. As a consequence, organizing a Mediterranean gastronomy festival is one of the most appropriate ways of highlighting a prevailing aspect of the local history and tradition
