This article summarises the results of the underwater rescue excavation of the shipwreck of Ses Fontanelles (Mallorca, Balearic Islands). The excavation documented the remains of a vessel, 12 m long and 5 m beam, loaded with two tiers of amphorae, which had set sail from the south-eastern Iberian Peninsula. The cargo includes numerous amphorae which were still sealed and bearing tituli picti, allowing for the analysis of their content. There is little doubt that the shipwreck of Ses Fontanelles is a key site for our understanding of third–fourth-century trade in the Western Mediterranean.

We present experimental reproduction of a cross section of the hull, made in order to better understand the process of construction, and certain characteristics of these ships specialized in the transport of bulk wine. In this paper we present the results of the 2012 archaeological campaign in
Bou Ferrer shipwreck (Villajoyosa-Alicante). The first floor of the amphorae Dr. 7-11 cargo
in an area of nearly 10 m2 was extracted to surface. That has revealed for the first time
an additional lead ingots cargo stowed in, and the first evidence of ship architecture in
wood, in the keel area. The morphologic and epigraphic ingots study has allowed further
precise wreck dating around the second half of the ist century A.D. Observations made
in naval architecture have brought a relationship to other sites and have develop a set of
working hypotheses that we expect to resolve in future campaigns.
Key words: Shipwreck, Naval architecture, Maritime trade, Dr. 7-11, Lead ingots.

At the end of the seventies, X. Nieto and F. Foerster partially excavated the
shipwreck known as Cap del Vol. On those works there were documented different characteristics
to join the frames to the hull, with no parallels in other sites. In France, since
1991 were restudied a group of shipwrecks and them showed a particular technique to
assembling frames to the hull using «internal laced technique». This group of shipwrecks
were defined by Pomey as an architectural signature in which was included Cap del Vol.
In 2011 CASC decided to restart the excavation of Cap del Vol, only excavated partially, to get knowledge about its naval architecture. This ship carried wine stocked in Pascual
1 amphorae produced in Baetulo, and was sailing to Narbona. The shipbuilding has own
features, probably related its construction to Conventus Tarraconensis shore.

Abstract: The conference about «The Bou Ferrer shipwreck of Villajoyosa: an extraordinary Roman site» was held in the auditorium of the Museo Arqueológico Nacional on November 26, 2015. The members of the project discussed different aspects of the management of the wreck, such as research, protection, preservation or dissemination. The last period of archaeological excavations finished just some days before de conference, so lecturers could provide unpublished data and images of a key site of European archaeology.

Das Ende der Späten Republik und der Beginn
der Frühen Kaiserzeit (1. Jh. v.

In the marine area of L’Albufereta, having developed underwater archaeological works between 2002 and 2006, we provided new data that can help to better understand the role played by the Bay of Albufereta (Alicante) in peninsular seaways, mainly between the s. II B.C. and s. V A.D. We hold like hypothesis that it can be regarded as statio in ancient times, with maximum port traffic in imperial time.

This report presents a sample of published Pre-Classical, Classical, and Medieval shipwrecks with hull remains preserved. We are working on a taxonomy for early Mediterranean vessels and trying to understand the process of technological convergence that led to the development of the shipbuilding families we have identified. This is a work in progress and we welcome all the feedback.

This article presents the results of the studies derived from the excavation campaign carried out in 2011, along with those of previous interventions and the classification work and review of the materials removed in the 70s of the last century. Considering
that currently almost fourty per cent of the shipwreck remains to be excavated, the results give a global view that changes, in part, some of the conclusions of the studies of this wreck which derived from the literature generated after the irst excavations. Currently, a multidisciplinary research team is studying the remains found: ceramics, inscriptions on amphorae, naval architecture and analyses of organic and inorganic residues.
