This article summarises the results of the underwater rescue excavation of the shipwreck of Ses Fontanelles (Mallorca, Balearic Islands). The excavation documented the remains of a vessel, 12 m long and 5 m beam, loaded with two tiers of amphorae, which had set sail from the south-eastern Iberian Peninsula. The cargo includes numerous amphorae which were still sealed and bearing tituli picti, allowing for the analysis of their content. There is little doubt that the shipwreck of Ses Fontanelles is a key site for our understanding of third–fourth-century trade in the Western Mediterranean.

We present experimental reproduction of a cross section of the hull, made in order to better understand the process of construction, and certain characteristics of these ships specialized in the transport of bulk wine. In the marine area of L’Albufereta, having developed underwater archaeological works between 2002 and 2006, we provided new data that can help to better understand the role played by the Bay of Albufereta (Alicante) in peninsular seaways, mainly between the s. II B.C. and s. V A.D. We hold like hypothesis that it can be regarded as statio in ancient times, with maximum port traffic in imperial time.
