Mario Martinez-Zarzuela

I am an Associate Professor at the Department of Signal Theory Communications and Telematics Engineering, from the University of Valladolid (Spain), where I have been teaching courses on computer programming and computer architecture for students of Telecommunications Engineering degree since year 2005. Additionally, I am an active member of a research group called Group of Imaging and Telematics (GTI), where I started a research line on GPGPU (General purpose Computing on the GPU) in 2005/06. Today, I am coordinating research projects related to GPU Computing, Augmented/Virtual Reality and Computer Vision using new acquisition technologies such as Kinect. We have been using the Kinect device since end 2010 with the aim of helping people with physical and cognitive disabilities. Today, we have some ongoing projects designed with the help of therapists.I have been an invited researcher in research groups such as the Heterogeneous Computing Group (SINTEF - Oslo, Norway), the MEG Unit (Max Planck Institute – University of Frankfurt, Germany) or the CAPO (Computación de Altas Prestaciones y Optimización) group (University Rey Juan Carlos, Spain).In my PhD. (2009), I presented a neural processing architecture for color image segmentation and recognition based on the human visual system using OpenGL/Cg and CUDA. The proposed architecture was able to segment and recognize natural images and textures in just a few seconds on the GPU, while the same processing needed several minutes on a single-core CPU. Additionally, I achieved to speed-up dozens of times the execution of Fuzzy ART-based Neural networks on the GPU. I am author of a book (Arquitecturas neuronales para reconocimiento de imágenes sobre GPU: Implementaciones en OpenGL/Cg y CUDA) and research papers in this field, and reviewer of JCR journals such as Neurocomputing, Integrated Computer-Aided Engineering, Computer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering or International Journal of Neural Systems.
