Situated at the ideological opposite of Manzoni and of the so-called catholic-liberal school (as De Sanctis defined it), the novel The Battle of Benevento (1827) offered its readers a narrative focused essentially on a gamut of human passions. Although it contains some similarities with the Gothic novel, its compositional methods reflect far more theatrical models. Linguistic choices differentiate Guerrazzi from other contemporary historical novelists. In this essay, I investigate the writer’s deeper motivation for the choice of extremely sustained registers, through which he aimed at creating effects of literary “nobility”. At the same time, we look into the reasons for the success of this kind of eloquence among different groups of readers even up to the first years of the twentieth century,.

Abstract: After the state of the art concerning scientific research on Michele Leoni and on the major Italian 19th century Shakspeare translations, the article tackles Leoni's translation modes for classical works, for Ossian and for Shakespeare. The stylistic continuity between his translation of Shakespeare's plays and the later Rusconi and Carcano translations is highlighted. Finally, the article suggests research tracks for Leoni's many-sided own literary works, for his complex cultural activities and, generally spoken, for the 19th century translations, often linked through similar stylistic features and always involved with textual models which could stand as a literary model: hence, a major continuity between "literature in translation" and "original literature".
Summary:
The article takes into consideration the editoral fortune of the letters sent by the Genoese brothers Giovanni and Agostino Ruffini from France and Switzerland in the years 1833-1836, and demonstrates how this correspondence features typical topics and writing modes of the exile letter. But also early changes of mind regarding the political experiences of Mazzini’s two young friends can be retrieved. The “reticent letter” is another kind of frequent epistolary writing of the Ruffinis. Finally, the article mentions the central role played by the mother: through the letters, she embodies, in a metaphorical way, the unreachable native country.
