Using the correspondence between May and her father’s executor Sydney Cockerell, now in the William Morris Gallery’s archive, this paper will discuss the changing nature of May and Jenny’s relationship following their parent’s deaths. The letters reveal the details of Jenny’s diminishing health and how May took on increasing financial, legal and emotional responsibility for her; from indulging Jenny’s love of motoring, to May’s insistence that Jenny be included in her plans’ to secure their father’s legacy.
A passionate advocate of craftsmanship over mass-production, William Morris (1834– 1896) designed... more A passionate advocate of craftsmanship over mass-production, William Morris (1834– 1896) designed a huge variety of objects, but it is his highly original carpet, fabric and wallpaper patterns that have continued to capture the imagination and exert their influence on the decorative arts. Around 600 such designs are attributed to Morris, of which the vast majority are based on natural forms, including trees, plants and flowers.
