functional and technological phenomenon
Three chieftain graves from Wrocław-Zakrzów discovered in the years 1886-
-1887 amazed the whole Central European scientific community not only with
its palatial construction, but first of all with the extraordinarily rich furnishings.
The deceased received various grave goods, among others, many imported
Roman glass and bronze vessels, richly ornamented unique dress accessories and
jewelery made of gold and silver, items decorated with semi-precious stones,
a Roman ritual stand made of metal etc. Also, over 50 ceramic vessels were
deposited in the graves. They were somehow neglected by the discoverers and
later researchers… Quite unrightfully – the group of vessels from Zakrzów is
unusual in terms of quantity, stylistics, decoration and technology. The number
of vessels is definitely higher than in any other grave discovery of similar chro-
nology, including chieftain graves of the Leuna-Hassleben-Zakrzów horizon.
Apart from hand-built pottery there are also forms that were shaped using a pot-
ter’s wheel. The hand-built ones, rather typical stylistically, catch our attention
with their rich and unusual, both symbolic and narrative decorations. The group
of vessels formed using a potter’s wheel dated to the C2 phase is one of the ear-
liest deposits of this type in the area of Central European Barbaricum. Their sty-
listic homogeneity may suggest that they were made in one workshop that cate-
red to the elite whose members were buried in Zakrzów. Some of the vessels are
apparently stylistically related to the Roman Provincial Style (folded beakers,
flasks). Stylistic similarities between some of the forms from Zakrzów and ves-
sels that are being discovered on cemeteries in other areas of Barbaricum are
clearly visible. They prove the interaction of cultural influences, or even migra-
tion of craftsmen. Ornamental knurling on some of the vessels clearly refers to
the Argonnensigillata type of ceramics that appeared as a novelty in Gaul at that
time. This raises a number of questions, for example, on the function of such 50 a ceramic complex in chieftain graves, symbolic meaning of the vessels and their
decoration and the role of Roman provincial potters in the organization of
the workshop that produced ware for the Zakrzów elite. This complex has in fact
a fundamental meaning in the context of chronology and the mechanism
of gaining the ability to use a potter’s wheel by the Przeworsk culture.

Dwa piece, wzbogacające w istotny sposób naszą wiedzę o sposobach wznoszenia tego typu obiektów kultury przeworskiej i rodzajach ce-ramiki w nich wypalanej, odkryte zostały w Mściwojowie, stan. 17, pow. jaworski (w roku 1998) i Ligocie Woźnickiej, stan. 1, pow. lubliniecki (w roku 2008). Warto jest przybliżyć szczegóły budowy obu obiektów i przeanalizować, z jakimi rozwiązaniami technicznymi mamy w obu przypadkach do czynienia. Few known locations and even fewer settlement remains seem to support this view covering not only the Bronze Age but prehistory in general. This results in relatively poor state of research on the prehistory in this region comparing to other parts of south-western Poland. The fact that only Stone Age and late medieval locations prevail in the archaeological landscape of the Kłodzko valley indicates not a settlement hiatus but insufficient research. The hypothesis we want to verify assumes the Kłodzko valley was not an empty communication zone connecting both sides of the Sudety mountains but a stable settlement region with its own original cultural and settlement properties. The methods covered archive queries, surface survey and geophysical prospection which became a starting point for opening trenches at selected locations. After promising results of surface survey and geomagnetic prospection, the excavations were performed at the site of Ruszowice near Kłodzko in SW Poland. Archaeological investigation was initiated in 2014 and they are continued. The relative dating (artefactual chronology) of the older settlement phase was determined for the early stages of the Urnfield culture, which may have started in ca. 1200 BC, however the results of the absolute dating are not available yet. The presented article discusses also the issues of the state of research on settlement and cultural situation in prehistory in the Kłodzko Valley, as well as prospects for research on this interesting region.

One of the graves was equipped with ceramic utensils (both hand-formed and thrown on a potter's wheel) as well as clips with bevelled hoops, which were probably analogous to artefacts discovered in other archaeological sites in Lower Silesia. Two of the graves contained no equipment typical of other Lower Silesian burials in the late Przeworsk culture. Perhaps the habit of not equipping the dead with any items should be attributed to the specific posthumous garment or shroud worn. The stones found in the graves were probably inspired by the Wielbark culture or the Scandinavians.
