The survey "Current Problems of Slovakia 1999" is a part of the long-term research project "Political Culture and Public Opinion" which has been underway since the beginning of the 1990's under the auspices of various institutions (Social Analysis Centre, FOCUS Agency, Institute for Public Affairs IVO). Its aims involve scrutinising and analysing the public's opinions on the changing political, social and economic situation. The January 1999 research focuses on the evaluation of post-election developments in Slovakia, on citizens' expectations after the 1998 parliamentary elections. It also deals with the citizens' trust in political parties, institutions and personalities, electoral preferences, political stances and the potential of political involvement. Transformation of Slovak Society since the Velvet Revolution2021 •
The aim of this paper is to disseminate partial results of the project Europe for Citizens / Share EU - Shaping of the European citizenship in the post-totalitarian societies: Reflections after 15 years of EU enlargement. The project focuses on linking the educational process, historical memory and social change 15 years after EU enlargement. Based on 10 in-depth interviews we have examined the transformation of Slovak society since the Velvet Revolution (1989) and joining EU (2004). Respondents were expected to express their views and thoughts of living in Slovak society since two significant milestones. The aim was to find out their subjective evaluations and opinions, without requiring expertise in this topic, however not excluding it. The focus is given to historical background that led to the change of a regime. The transformation to the democratic society resulted into the formation of a new Slovak identity. The historical memory of a nation is a basic premise or part of its identity. Every comprehensive insight into the past must include an explanation of the key factors that influence the formation of human expectations and, in the broadest sense, the processes of formation of civil society. In Slovakia, the transition to personal responsibility is challenging. The era in Slovakia is good for capable and ambitious individuals, but for those who do not have ambitions or talent, it is a difficult time, these are individuals who used to rely on the social security that the state provided them in the past. To become an advanced democratic country, Slovakia needs to be led by people who are able to bring democratic values, ethics, justice, expertise and cooperation to the country’s administration. The result of qualitative research is the creation of a holistic picture of the studied phenomena. The presented research is a comprehensive view of the studied subject areas in Slovakia.
Presidential elections in Slovakia 1993 – 2019
Presidential elections in Slovakia 1993 – 20192020 •
Since 1993, a total of seven elections of the President of the Slovak Republic have taken place in Slovakia. The elections in 1993 and 1998 were held in the National Council of the Slovak Republic and the voters were the then legislators. Also because the President of the Slovak Republic was not elected indirectly in 1998, the method of election was changed to direct. By 2019, there were five direct elections. Slovakia thus has experience with both methods of electing the highest official. Nevertheless, in the domestic and foreign professional environment, a comprehensive work was not created in which the reader would find the basic realities of the presidential elections and also the basic outline of their course. Previous publications on the presidential elections in Slovakia were devoted to the 2009 elections in a book by the Institute for Public Affairs (IVO) Slovakia Votes 2009, which contains information on the elections of the President of the Slovak Republic and also on the elections to the European Parliament (EP). A separate publication was also published by the authors Marek Rybář, Petr Spáč and Petr Voda. The absence of a comprehensive work on all elections of the President of the Slovak Republic was at the beginning of the creation of this "presidential monograph". Information about the election of Slovak presidents in the modern era of Slovakia has been "scattered" in several print and digital sources. In addition to the election results prepared and published by the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic, these were minutes from the Joint Czech-Slovak Digital Parliamentary Library, printed editions of Sme, Pravda, Národná obroda and Slovenská republika newspapers, especially from the 1990s (kindly provided by Michal Rešetka Regional Library in Trenčín), as well as newer Internet articles, mainly form the newspapers Sme and Pravda with a focus on the elections of the President of the Slovak Republic since 2004. In addition, a further source of information about the aesthetic dimension of the elections was the Volebný infoservis portal, from which the election billboards of candidates have been coming since 2009. Due to the fact that especially after 2009 the electoral mobilization and mediation of the social atmosphere was made possible by social networks, the monograph also contains sources of information from Facebook - more precisely from the elections of the President of the Slovak Republic in 2019. The reader does not necessarily have to identify with the story of individual elections presented by the authors. The authors are critical of several candidates for the highest office from different parts of the political spectrum. In case of some candidates, he questions the sincerity of their very motivation to run. Naturally, readers may or may not accept interpretation of the authors. In general, however, the publication can be useful for all readers who, for professional or private reasons, want to know or verify the realities of any presidential election in Slovakia. For this practical purpose, there is a special section at the end of the book, called the Statistical Data on the Elections of the President of the Slovak Republic. The section contains an ordered list of candidates, the nominating political parties and movements, the number of votes and election dates together with turnout. The final graph is also focused on the turnout. In the future it will be possible to pose newer and newer questions about the presidential elections, and the time factor will make historians particularly concerned. This book follows a simple ambition to concentrate all the most important data on the previous elections of the President of the Slovak Republic into one publication. Besides that the book in some moments concerns with perhaps provocative controversy, which according to the authors some important candidates brought into the elections. And finally aims to evaluate what impact did the change form indirect to direct election of the President of the Slovak Republic have and how did it influence the functioning of political parties, as the change in the election of the President of the Slovak Republic also aimed to eliminate the influence of political parties on the presidency, which according to idealistic ideas should be an impartial and independent policy institution. Readers will find the answers to the above questions only at the end of the book in the conclusion.
The recent parliamentary elections which took place in The Slovak Republic in March 2016 opened for many national and international commentators the bottled of demons from the past history of Slovakia. For the first time a Far right extremist political party entered into parliament and held seats there. They gained more than some standard political parties and also were not dubbed as the " black " horse of this election. As they were not measured by public opinion. The main purpose of this article is to analyze the fundamental purpose of voters that had elected this political party and on the other hand the main reason that has opened the parliamentary door to such a political entity that was not visible in the previous electoral periods or played any important role in the independence of Slovak republic. Our main assumption will be that which is taken from the media analysis before the parliamentary election and public opinion research. Our main variable from the external environment will be the migration refugee crisis and the rhetoric of political parties acting at national level. We can assume that this was one of the main reason for the entry of this political party within others which were " hidden " or covered by this crisis and were not mediatized in the media.
2020 •
This article discusses the ethnopolitics of Vladimir Meciar’s government in Slovakia in the period of years between 1994-1998, with a particular focus on the Hungarian minority. The introduction outlines ethnic heterogeneity in Slovakia, giving a brief historical background for some minorities. The next part covers the result of the 1994 parliamentary election, which led to the formation of the HZDS-SNS-ZRS coalition government headed by Vladimir Meciar as Prime Minister. The study also includes the ideological profiles of the governmental parties, which are linked by strong accentuation of nationalism and statism. The article seeks to analyse the ethnopolitics of the government in the above-mentioned election term, evaluate its positive and negative aspects. In particular, the affairs, new legislation adopted and its impact on the largest Hungarian minority living in Slovakia.

1989 in Slovakia – Between Reform and Radical Change2020 •
The author elaborates on the political development in Slovakia at the end of the 1980s, namely in 1989, which was crucially influenced by a document entitled Bratislava nahlas (Bratislava/Aloud) published by a group of Bratislava‑based environmentalists in 1987, and the so‑called Candlelight Demonstration, which demanded that freedom of religion be respected, organised by the so‑called Christian dissent activists in Bratislava on 25 March 1988. Both events were also a certain momentum for those active in independent initiatives in Bohemia. One other key moment in the consolidation of the opposition was the trial with a group of dissidents from Bratislava, the so‑called Bratislava Five, arrested in August 1989. This paper tries to uncover the factors which made the situation in both parts of the former joint Czechoslovak state similar and how the story of the “fall of the communist regime” in Slovakia differed from that of the Czech lands. It outlines the “lines of conflict” which had a decisive influence on the development of events in the political course. It also analyses how prepared the agents of the November 1989 events were for the political changes, their “politicisation”, but also uncovers specific conflicts that resulted from Slovak‑Hungarian relations and the question of the position of Slovakia within the Czechoslovak federation. The paper tries to answer the question of the extent to which the development at the time influenced the political processes immediately after the fall of the communist regime. One specific aspect of the changes in Slovakia was the relatively permeable boundary between the “official” and “unofficial” discourse, which provided room for a non‑realised model of negotiated transition. The article deals with the socio – political processes in Slovakia after gaining the independence. The author evaluates the processes from three points of view. First, he analyses the similarities between Slovakia and the states of Central and Eastern Europe. In the second part, he parses the different features distinguishing Slovakia on background of socio – political changes in the region. The last part of the article deals with the Slovak issue from the Polish perspective. The part contains the author ́s own research concerning the image of Slovakia in the main Polish electronic media

Regional Elections in Slovakia – a New Reformation of the Slovak Political Scene?2018 •
The aim of the present study is to analyse the events and results of the elections to bodies of regional self-governments in Slovakia in November 2017. The elections were held under the conditions of the amended legislation after the abolition of the two-tier election system of the presidents of the regions. The study analyses the process of forming pre-election coalitions and the mobilisation of voters. The research is based primarily on official election results as well as political party documents and information published in the media. Although the strongest body of the ruling coalition, Direction – Social Democracy Party, obtained the highest number of seats, there was a marked drop in voter participation. This is a continuation of a trend in evidence in the parliamentary elections in 2016. The regional elections of 2017 signalled, in contrast, the consolidation of the right-wing opposition (SaS, OĽaNO, and KDH), whose agenda contains elements of anti-European and anti-party populism.

The article offers a political-social-cultural reflection of the development of Slovak translated literature and Slovak thinking on translation. The year 1945 was a turning point for the development of culture and translated literature in Slovakia. The conditions for translation production and theoretical thinking on translation development were being created, but on the other hand, ideological and political effects on translation production were starting to emerge. The article specifies several milestones between 1945 and the present that have shaped and influenced Slovak society as well as translated literature on socio-political, cultural, and literary levels. The particular periods looked at are the 1940s and 50s, the 1960s, the 1970s, and the 1980s and 90s.
