The paper presents new concepts in the area of relationship modeling in management information. A formal model of relationships between managed object classes is presented. The integration of relationships with object oriented concepts used in information modeling considerably enhances its semantic richness. A foundation for relationship-based navigation using virtual relationships arising from commutativity, transitivity, and distribution semantics is created. Finally, a mechanism using virtual attributes is presented to resolve the problem of encapsulation breakdown arising from relationships between object classes

In this position paper, we argue the modern applications require databases to capture and enforce more domain semantics than traditional applications. We also argue that the best way to incorporate additional semantics into database systems is by capturing the added information in conceptual models and then using it for database design. In this light, we revisit Entity-Relationship models and investigate ways in which such models could be extended to play a role in the process. Inspired by a paper by Rafael Camps Pare ([2]), we suggest avenues of research in the issue.

The concepts of object oriented data models aim towards modeling of application objects close to the user's view. Yet developers of applications relying on object oriented database management systems are facing problems resulting from the limitations of object oriented data models to describe adequately the full range of possible associations between objects and between processes. This paper focuses on the conceptual data modeling needs of object oriented database applications, and proposes an object+relationship model, ERC+, which meets database application requirements by merging traditional semantic data models features with object oriented capabilities such as structural object orientation, inheritance, and object identity. It is an extended entity-relationship model specifically designed to support complex object description and to allow multiple perceptions of objects. The ERC+ model provides the foundations for an integrated environment of tools called SUPER that has bee...

The Eastern Himalayan region has been identified as one of the 18 mega-biodiversity ‘hotspot’ areas of the world (Myers et al. 2000). Arunachal Pradesh constitutes 60.93% of the Eastern Himalayan region. Some documentation exists on the flora, but documentations on faunal aspects are still scanty, with scattered reports, mostly on birds and some large mammals. Although contributions to the fish fauna of the State have also been made, accounts of species compositions of many water bodies still remain undocumented awaiting explorations and studies of such aquatic systems. Descriptions of most faunal works have been added with special emphasis on fishes. The preliminary findings suggest 7 first reports for the district and 3 first reports for the State. Senkhi stream contributed 31.37% of the ichthyofaunal families of the district and 29.52% of genera while the species representation was found to be 27.32%. The correlation matrix reveals an interesting fact that Dikrong and Pachin have more common species than Senkhi, which is a hill stream. The striking feature is the even distribution of species under family Badidae, Psilorhynchidae and Olyridae though their contribution of each lotic (Senkhi, Pachin and Dikrong) water body is merely a single species and hence these species will be most vulnerable once a mega dam comes in-between, restricting the migration of already threatened population.

Invited, short provocative piece for special journal section titled "The Institute for Social Research at 100: Continuity and Transformation". Argues that the main methodological tenets of the Frankfurt School have been widely adopted across the social sciences and humanities, and that those of us brought up in this specific tradition of critical social theory should both stop arguing for our distinctiveness and congratulate ourselves on our argumentative success at widely winning many converts.
