installed in every consumer unit and a back-end database at the EB office which calculates the amount to be paid according to the number of units consumed. The GSM Digital Power Meter is a single phase digital kWh power meter with embedded GSM modem which utilizes the GSM network to send its power usage reading using Short Messaging Service (SMS) back to the energy provider wirelessly. The user interface also consists of LCD which displays the amount of power consumed. The advantages of the proposed system make the existing system incompetent. It is possible to connect to remote areas as it employs wireless technology. The new system is user friendly, easy to access and far more efficient than the existing system.

The technology of e-metering (Electronic Metering) has gone through rapid technological advancements and there is increased demand for a reliable and efficient Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) system. This paper presents the design of a simple low cost wireless GSM energy meter and its associated web interface, for automating billing and managing the collected data globally. The proposed system replaces traditional meter reading methods and enables remote access of existing energy meter by the energy provider. Also they can monitor the meter readings regularly without the person visiting each house. A GSM based wireless communication module disintegrated with electronic energy meter of each entity to have remote access over the usage of electricity. A PC with a GSM receiver at the other end, which contains the database acts as the billing point. Live meter reading from the GSM enabled energy meter is sent back to this billing point periodically and these details are updated in a centra...
Electricity is one of the vital requirements for the sustainment of a comfortable and productive life and as such it should be used judiciously for its proper utilization. Consumers are not satisfied with the services of power companies with the existing energy meter reading and billing system. Most of the time they have complains regarding statistical errors in their monthly bills. The objective of our project is to design and implement an automatic energy meter reading system that measures and transmits total energy consumption to the Electricity Provider using the GSM network as well as disconnect or reconnect the meter remotely. This can be achieved by the use of a microcontroller unit that continuously monitors and records the energy meter readings in its permanent memory location and a GSM modem that enables the remote monitoring and control of the energy meter. The proposed Microcontroller based system continuously records the readings and the live meter reading can be sent to the provider using the existing short messaging services (SMS) of the GSM network on request. This system can also be used to disconnect or reconnect the power supply to the consumer if the need arises. A dedicated GSM modem with a SIM card interfaced to the ports of the microcontroller is required for each energy meter. With this, a great deal of energy is saved and the consumer enjoys maximum satisfaction of the electrical energy paid for; hence an improvement, stability and utilization of electrical energy are achieved as well as reduction on human dependency.

The development of a automatic billing system is presented in this paper. Automatic billing system (ABS) consists of digital power meter with GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications). Meter consists of a GSM modem which utilizes the GSM network to send its power usage reading using SMS (Short Message Service) in response to the energy provider’s query about meter reading. At the main server the VB software is used to manage all the received SMSs (meter readings), compute the billing cost, update the database, and to publish billing notification to its respective consumer through SMS or printed postage mailing. A working prototype of the ABS system was build to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of ABS, billing, and notification through the use of GSM network.
—this paper presents the design and modelling of GSM-based Energy Recharge System for prepaid metering. The present system of energy billing in India is based on post-paid, contains lots of error and also time and labour consuming. Errors get introduced at every stage of energy billing like errors with electro-mechanical meters, human errors, processing errors. The aim of the developed system is to minimize the error by introducing a new system of Prepaid Energy Metering using GSM. The GSM is used to provide the communication between user and provider. This will enable the user to recharge their electricity account from home. The system is based on LPC2148 microcontroller.Hardware system of LPC2148 includes the necessary devices within only one MCU such as USB, ADC, DAC, Timer/Counter, PWM UART etc. The results obtained shows good system performance and error free.

The paper presents designing, implementation of the cost effective Energy Meter having demand side load management with flexible tariff plan. Smart Energy Meter with the enabling feature of Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) and storing data in SD card, communication of billing information with the consumer and utility through GSM network, tampering detection and notify both consumer and utility through Short Massaging Service (SMS). Advanced feature of this meter is demand side load management during peak and off-peak hours. Using load management customer can go into daily cost reduction process. In load management, consumer load limit is flexibly reduced during peak hours and by increasing this limit SEM automatically cut off the load. In case of any fault SEM also automatically disconnect the complete load through relay operation..

This project aims to relax the work effort of humans by developing a Smart electric power meter. The current bill generation scenario is very tiring and timeconsuming as it is done physically. In this world where technologies are emerging very rapidly the electric power reading meter has also been digitally modified but is not fully automated, it still requires human efforts. There were errors and drawbacks in the earlier electricity meter which needed frequent repairing and maintenance. The analog meter sometimes gives malfunctioned or inexact unit reading. The digital electricity meter has more accuracy than the earlier electricity meter but it still requires human efforts to note the reading and generate the bill. In this project, we have introduced GSM Modem and Relay to exterminate the flaws of the previous analog meter and transform it into a completely automated electricity meter. The new bill generation method automatically fetches the meter reading from the meter and directly convey it to the electricity department using GSM Modem and respective bills are generated and sent to consumers. The authorized department can ON and OFF the power supply of the consumer's meter using relay circuitry. This technique permits remote access of the electricity meter and can be tracked routinely without physically visiting the meter location.
