When the studies on divorce are examined, it is understood that the act of divorce causes stigmatization of individuals. Studies show that divorced individuals are stigmatized with different stigmatizing concepts in different cultures. What makes this study different from other studies is that it reveals which concepts and how divorced individuals in Turkey are stigmatized. The research problem is about the lived experiences of individuals and requires in-depth knowledge about these lived experiences. For this reason, the qualitative research method was preferred as the research method. Phenomenology was used as the research design in this study carried out with the qualitative research method. Phenomenology focuses on the experiences which are the related phenomenon of individuals who have experienced phenomena that we have noticed but do not have a deep understanding of, and provides gaining in-depth knowledge of the phenomenon under research. Thematic qualitative data analysis was applied to the data collected in a city located in the northwest of Turkey, and stigmatizing concepts were revealed by reaching the themes from the codes. In this study, it was concluded that divorced men are stigmatized with 3 concepts and divorced women are stigmatized with 3 concepts that are different from the concepts that stigmatize men. It has been seen that these stigmatizing concepts are semantically opposite to the concepts that constitute male and female identities. In addition, it was concluded that this stigmatization process occurs with the thought that women and men fail to fulfill their gender roles.

Divorce, especially in transitional societies like Iran, that hallow the family, is not only as a moral evil but as a factor of loss and harm. The results shows that this representation in some case is an unfounded stereotype which needs revisions. Structural changes in societies from traditional to modern conditions, leads to the wide changes in dominant values. The most important changes include the rise of ethical values such as autonomy and individuality which explained in Emmanuel Kant philosophy. These fundamental principles are the basis for defining the "personal identity" in modern society according to Anthony Giddens. This work shows how the divorce experience leads to the substantiation of these moral principles and consequently personal identity. We work with 21 middle class women who educated in social sciences. Our method is Grounded Theory for understanding the " process of constructing Identity " .

The concept of divorce is the separation of a married couple due to certain personal, domestic and matrimonial reasons which are legally and socially acceptable as both the spouses can’t coexist together peacefully in the matrimonial home and continue their ceremonial life as the marital life is disturbed due to conflict of interest, physical abuse, suspicion of extramarital affair and sexual reasons like Infertility, sexually transmitted diseases and other reasons. There are various pieces of legislations and civil codes to regulate and discharge a person from the matrimonial relationship and provide maintenance to the spouse to continue her life after separation. There are two types of Divorce Methods i.e., Legal Separation where the couple are given some time to reunite and live together otherwise divorce is granted. Divorce can’t be given before one year of consummation of marriage as it goes against the marital law and structure of family in a society. The society viewpoint of divorce has been highly conservative as it affects the dignity of the individual in a whole society and violates the social norms set for the customary social hierarchy of marriage, family and social process. The liberal nature of a free society questions the patriarchal perspective of concept of divorce and the amount of loss of reputation it causes to the individual by misogynist comments and the sociological perception of divorce is based on social norms, values, ideals and cultural practices which form the foundation of marital relationships and are a significant part of the modern society.

In this study we try to shed light on changed family structure through the act of divorce. Divorce reveals much about the nature of family life, particularly the challenges and stresses families face. The increased rate of divorce seen over the last decade is a sign of the stress families are experiencing. Liberalisation of divorce laws (i.e. enactment of no-fault divorce in 1988) and New Civil Code reforms are analysed as the mechanisms behind the increased divorce rate. At the same time, we scrutinise altered grounds for divorce, thereby revealing the role played by changes in individual perceptions of divorce. Moreover, as is evinced by this study, another challenge for existing family structures manifests itself in the wake of divorce. Following divorce, alternative family forms such as single-parent families – often headed by women – and patterns of remarriage pose challenges to the monolithic family structure in Turkey. Therefore, understanding these diverse patterns is crucia...
Divorce defines as “the dissolution of a marriage, normally permitting each party to remarry” (Christopher, 1999). Social adjustment after divorce refers to resettlement of an individual in the society after being divorced and resettlement is in terms of economic empowerment and decision making by her. The current study was investigating the problems faced by divorced women and to figure out the social adjustment issues of divorced women. Social adjustment issues of divorced women were studied with the sample of 15 case studies of Muslim divorced women who were resided in different areas of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan. Case study technique was used based on grounded theory. It is concluded from over all findings of this study that divorce effects on women in every spheres of their lives. It impacts on them negatively. Society sees them as stigmatized personality and criticizes them without knowing that whether they are guilty for their marriage termination or not. She feels herself alien and these thoughts put her under grave of psychological stress and social alienation. In this phase, when she goes through from this disturbance, she needs support. Society needs to understand the problems of divorcees rather than to criticizes her and blaming her on her marriage termination. So there is need for awareness and change in the minds of people to do not stress her, understand her condition and must encourage her to begin her life again. The increased awareness of society in this regard will ensure the health of the victimized individuals and the society at large.
