A new species of geckos of the genus Cyrtodactylus Gray, 1827 from Arunachal Pradesh, India2021 •
We here describe a new species of bent-toed geckos from the northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, which is widespread across the Dafla and Mishmi hills, occurring at elevations ranging from 179 m to 1400 m. The new species is recovered as sister to the Cyrtodactylus khasiensis clade based on a molecular phylogeny inferred from mitochondrial NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase, subunit 2 gene. Intraspecific uncorrected pairwise sequence divergence (p-distance) for the new species was found to be between 0 and 5%, whereas the interspecific divergence from the closely-related congeners was between 19 and 30%. The new species can be differentiated from members of the C. khasiensis clade using a suite of morphological characters: moderate body size (SVL 64.9–81.7); 8–11 supralabials; 8–10 infralabials; 24–26 bluntly conical, feebly keeled dorsal tubercles; 50–60 paravertebral tubercles; ~38 ventral scales between ventrolateral folds; no precloacal groves; 6–10 precloacofemoral pores...
Snake Park, conducting research on reptiles and amphibians of Southern India. His research themes include documenting diversity of under-explored eco-regions, updating and refining species characterizations and finding out modern day distribution patterns with respect to south India's herpetofauna. M. Rameswaran is an ardent wildlifer and nature enthusiast, particularly a reptile conservationist who is the founder of Reptile Conservation of India, located in Thirunelveli. Regularly conducts nature camps, eco-tours and delivers awareness programmes and talks about Indian snakes and other reptiles to the public. Has conducted several wildlife census and surveyed extensively across several places in Tamil Nadu and also in Maharashtra. Naveen A. Joseph is a keen naturalist and wildlife enthusiast, he is the Founder Director of National Troopers for Conservation of Nature, located in Tuticorin. Involved in campaigning wildlife awareness and nature-orientation programmes for children and adults; undertakes awareness programmes and crusades for educating the public about Indian snakes, demystifying their false beliefs and promoting conservation. Has carried out several wildlife census and treks in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Ahamed M. Jerith is a student of BSc zoology at the American College, Madurai; hailing from Tuticorin and exposed to snakes and snake awareness programmes right from childhood. Has a keen interest on Indian snakes and other reptiles and aims to promote their conservation. Author Contribution: SRG conceived the work. SRG collected data for both the species dealt with; while MR, NAJ and AMJ collected data for one species. MR, NAJ and AMJ did most of the fieldwork, while SRG participated in some field tours. SRG studied the voucher materials, at least some of which were also perused by MR, NAJ and AMJ. SRG led the writing in consultation with MR, NAJ and AMJ. All the authors equally participated in finalizing the write-up and read and approved the final version. Acknowledgements: We thank our respective institutions for supporting our research activities. SRG is deeply grateful to Mr. Romulus Whitaker for kindly providing information on the lizards of Chengelpet and Tirukkalukundram hills. NJ thanks Tamil Nadu Forest Department, Tuticorin, for supporting his field work at Vallanadu. We also thank Mr. S. Mohammed Zakkaria and Mr. C. Eswara Pandi for helping us during field trips and also the local people for information on these species. Abstract: We studied two poorly known terrestrial geckoes inhabiting peninsular India namely, Hemidactylus reticulatus Beddome, 1870 and H. scabriceps (Annandale, 1906). We present data on their morphometry, scalation, colouration and field observations based on both studies in the field and on voucher specimens. Hemipenal morphology for H. scabriceps is presented herein for the first time. Seen in light of some recent cases of misidentification between these two ecologically-similar parapatric species, the present work aids in precise identification and presents landscape clues that help understand their ecology.

All nominal species assigned to the diurnal geckos of the genus Cnemaspis Strauch, 1887 from Sri Lanka are reviewed and re-described on the basis of their name-bearing types. Based on a recent survey, eleven new species are described from Sri Lanka: C. clivicola, C. kallima, C. latha, C. amith, C. menikay, C. pava, C. phillipsi, C. pulchra, C. punctata, C. silvula and C. upendrai. A total of 21 valid species of Cnemaspis are now recognized from the island, all of them endemic. Two species·C. amith and C. tropidogaster·are not presently known from extant populations. A neotype is designated for Gymnodactylus scalpensis Ferguson, 1877 (type locality Gannoruwa Forest, near Kandy) and lectotypes selected for Gymnodactylus kandiana Kelaart, 1852, and Gonatodes kandianus var. tropidogaster Boulenger, 1885 (the type locality of the latter, which is not yet known from an extant population, is restricted to Sri Lanka). Cnemaspis ranwellai Wickramasinghe, 2006, is shown to be a junior objective synonym of C. scalpensis. An examination of type material shows Gymnodactylus humei Theobald, 1876, to be a junior subjective synonym of G. kandianus Kelaart, 1852. The name-bearing types of all nominal peninsular Indian species described prior to 1984 are redescribed, and lectotypes selected for Goniodactylus boiei Gray, 1842, Gymnodactylus beddomei Theobald, 1876, G. gracilis Beddome, 1870, G. indicus Gray, 1846, G. ornatus Beddome, 1870, G. wicksii Stoliczka, 1873, and G. wynadensis Beddome, 1870. Three new South Indian species discovered among these historical specimens are described: C. monticola (type locality Wynaad, Kerala State); C. australis (type locality Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu State); and C. nilagirica (type locality: Nilgiri Hills, Tamil Nadu; formerly a syntype of C. tropidogaster). Cnemaspis wicksii (Stoliczka, 1873) and C. andersonii (Annandale, 1904), hitherto buried in the synonymy, are shown to be valid species. Examination of their namebearing types shows Gonatodes bireticulatus Annandale, 1915, to be a junior subjective synonym of Gymnodactylus sisparensis Theobald, 1876. The identities of Gymnodactylus mysoriensis Jerdon, 1853 and G. littoralis Jerdon, 1853, two valid species, remain to be fixed through the designation of neotypes selected from topotypical specimens so as to facilitate future description of new taxa from southern India.

First record of the Smooth-backed Parachute Gecko Ptychozoon lionotum Annandale 1905 from the Indian Mainland2001 •
Cnemaspis flaviventralis, a new species of day gecko, is described from the forests of Amboli, Sindhudurg District, Maharashtra State, northern Western Ghats, India. The new species was previously confused with the sympatric species Cnemaspis girii, C. indraneildasii, C. kolhapurensis and C. goaensis. It is distinguished from C. giri by having spine-like tubercles on flanks, granular dorsal scales intermixed with large, depressed, slightly keeled scales (vs. lack of spine-like tubercles on flanks, granular dorsal scales, intermixed with large smooth scales); from C. indraneildasii by having dorsal scales heterogeneous (vs. homogenous), lacking a series of enlarged median sub-caudal scales, and 28–29 (vs. 20) ventral scales across mid-body; from C. kolhapurensis by having heterogeneous (vs. homogenous) dorsal scalation, lacking spine-like tubercles on flanks and lacking pre-cloacal pores (vs. 24–28 pre-cloacal-femoral pores); and from C. goaensis by lacking pre-cloacal pores and lacking a series of enlarged median sub-caudal scales. We further provide partial mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene sequences for the new species and for the sympatric species C. girii, C. kolhapurensis and C. goaensis, and show that the new species is genetically distinct.

We list the herpetological voucher specimens in the holdings of the Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology & Natural History (SACON), a wildlife research institute in India. Most of the collections are the fruition of fieldwork by SACON's herpetologist and a coauthor of this work-late Dr. Subramanian Bhupathy (1963-2014). Taxonomically, the collection represents 125 species, comprising 29 amphibian species belonging to eight families and 96 reptilian species belonging to 17 families. Geographically, the material in this collection originates from the Western Ghats, the Eastern Ghats, the Deccan Plateau, and the Coromandel Coast, comprehensively covering all ecoregions of peninsular India. A total of 15 taxa (three amphibians, 12 reptiles) remain to be fully identified and are provisionally referred to mostresembling taxa, with cf. prefix. All the specimens in this collection are non-types as on date.
