Network processors are the basic building blocks of today's high-speed, high-demand, quality-oriented communication networks. Designing and implementing network processors requires a new programming paradigm and an in-depth understanding of network processing requirements. This book leads the reader through the requirements and the underlying theory of networks, network processing, and network processors. It covers implementation of network processors and intergrates EZchip Microcode Development Environment so that you can gain hands-on experience in writing high-speed networking applications. By the end of the book, the reader will be able to write and test applications on a simulated network processor.Comprehensive, theoretical, and pracitical coverage of networks and high-speed networking applicationsDescirbes contemporary core, metro, and access networks and their processing algorithmsCovers network processor architectures and programming models, enabling readers to assess t...

Due to network bandwidth growth, grid computing has been envisionned. As grids are aggregation of computer clusters based on high performance local networks and interconnected by very high speed core networks, access links to core networks remain bottleneck locations. In order to optimize grid computing overall performance, we propose to organize data transfers from one cluster to an other. This organization must allow ressource schedulers to schedule data transferts in addition of tasks. Based on a grid network resource reservation model this paper presents the design f a grid gateway, located at the LAN/WAN interface. To implement this approach, we have develop a prototype based on Network Processors Intel IXP2400 which is able to control flows at 1 gigabits/s. We discuss the main design choices and experimental results

Metropolitan airports constitute an environmental nuisance, mainly due to noise pollution originating from aircraft landings and takeoffs, affecting the wellbeing of the airports’ neighboring populations. Noise measurement is considered the fundamental means to evaluate, enforce, validate, and control noise abatement. Noise measurements performed by sound monitors located close to urban airports are often disrupted by urban background noise that interferes with aircraft sounds. Detecting aircraft noise, classifying, identifying, and separating it from the residual background noise is a challenge for unattended aircraft noise monitors. This paper suggests a simple and inexpensive methodology, based on ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast), which can facilitate isolating aircraft noise from background noise. Experiments showed that using ADS-B driven noise monitors is at least as accurate as the commonly used radar–driven noise monitors, in terms of true positive, false positive, or false negative detection during the examined periods.

Aircraft noise, especially at takeoffs and landings, became a major environmental nuisance and a health hazard for the population around metropolitan airports. In the battle for a better quality of life, wellbeing, and health, aircraft noise models are essential for noise abatement, control, enforcement, evaluation, policy-making, and shaping the entire aviation industry. Aircraft noise models calculate noise and exposure levels based on aircraft types, engines and airframes, aircraft flight paths, environment factors, and more. Validating the aircraft noise model is a mandatory step towards the model credibility, especially when these models play such a key role with a huge impact on society, economy, and public health. Yet, no validation procedure was offered, and it turns out to be a challenging task. The actual, measured, aircraft noise level is known to be subject to statistical variation, even for the same aircraft type at the same situation and flight phase, executing the sam...

Both data communication and telecommunication networks consist of nodes, links and network resources. Many studies deal with the design of optimal network topologies. In current methodologies, every node presents the same constraints and behavior, while in reality, the network resources vary. The research problem at stake is how to add central network resources (i.e., servers, gateways, network managers, probes, mainframes,

Intelligent building networks can have either a centralized or a distributed architecture. Distributed networks are based on autonomous entities, can be integrated with other types of network elements, and generally are more robust than centralized networks. For better utilization of an intelligent building network, this kind of heterogeneous setup requires a unified IP-based management. We present an extended scheme of a distributed IP network management system by introducing an integrated site network management paradigm consisting of data elements, telecommunication equipment and intelligent building devices.

We have begun a randomized study of tele-ophthalmology. General practitioners in two participating health centres in the Negev region of Israel, serving a local population of 40,000, were invited to participate. The study group consisted of 50 consecutive patients attending the general eye outpatient clinic and 50 consecutive patients suffering from various retinal diseases attending a hospital outpatient clinic. The initial assessment was carried out via the tele-ophthalmology system. There was then a face-to-face re-examination of the same patients, in randomized order, by the same ophthalmologist on the same day, at an outpatient ophthalmology clinic.

The process of information systems (IS) planning in an organization occurs when there is a set of IS projects that require implementation, generally within certain time frames and budgetary constraints. We propose a method for determining an optimal order of project implementation. The proposed method utilizes the cost-benefit graph, which considers the expected cost and benefit of each of the projects comprising the set, as well as the weight (importance) of the cost and benefit factors to the decision-makers. The method allows us ...

Video quality suffers significant degradation when transmitted over error-prone channel, due to packet loss, errors caused by fading in wireless channel and due to the video codec prediction mechanisms. The H.264/AVC standard suggests some new error-resilient features to enable reliable transmission of compressed video signal over lossy packet networks. Two of those new features are the Redundant Slices and the Flexible Macro-Block Ordering (FMO). In this paper we propose a new error-resilient scheme which merges the H.264/AVC FMO feature with a new technique for dynamic allocation of redundant slices depending on the wireless channel fading parameters. We suggest using a unique smart dynamic redundant slices allocation scheme which considers the dynamic wireless channel parameters rather than using the classical standard static allocation. The proposed redundant slice allocation algorithm is based on both Average Fade Duration (AFD), and Level Cross Rate (LCR) channel's characteristics. Moreover, we propose a new Explicit Spiral-Interleaved (ESI) flexible macroblocks ordering technique, which outperforms all other FMO types. The new ESI ordering results in effective error scattering which maximize the number of correctly received macroblocks located around corrupted macroblocks, leading to better error concealment. The proposed scheme greatly improves video transmission quality over lossy wireless transmission channels. Simulations results for wireless channel characterized by Rayleigh fading indicate that the proposed method improves the standard static allocation of redundant slices in terms of PSNR by about 2.5dB. Performance evaluations show that our approach is especially suited for applications such as video conferencing and mobile TV, where typically a specific main important Region of Interest should be more carefully protected

Computer performance is an important issue for engineering and economic aspects of computer usage, planning, design and research. The Co-plot methodology graphically relates attributes, observations and interrelations between attributes, thus enabling the simultaneous study of all the observations and variables of a given data set. An analysis of performance attributes of computers from the 1980's (1981–1991) was carried out according

In this paper we present an implementation-based comparison of Measurement-based Admission Control algorithms. Through the use of a special purpose environment, a performance and behaviour comparison is made. The results of this paper illustrate the independence of traffic from admission control behaviour in the homogeneous traffic environment. While illustrating the impact the admission decision will make upon heterogenous traffic systems. These results highlight the importance of estimators being ...

This paper deals with the issue of accessing relevant information in a network that consists of heterogeneous databases of various types, eg structured databases as well as text, audio, and picture files, which reside in locations not necessarily known to the users. The objective is to construct a search mechanism to find the most relevant databases in the network with the help of a meta knowledge base (MKB). This is an ongoing research project, and the current paper provides only a general overview of the problem and the ...
