Background: Episiotomy describes an incision made on the perineum to widen the vaginal orifice so as to aid delivery of the baby. Though not routinely recommended, it is a common during delivery. Despite the intended positive outcomes, complications like sexual dysfunction, urinary incontinence, chronic pelvic pain, perineal infection do occur following it. When sexual dysfunction occurs as sequelae as a result of poor episiotomy repair technique or poor healing, it can affect sexual intercourse and lead to marital disharmony especially in societies that tend to lean towards patriarchy Case presentation: A 31-year-old Nigerian multiparous lady with three living children presented on account of complaints of lax introitus and lack of sexual satisfaction by the partner. She had poorly healed bilateral episiotomy scar following her last delivery. She has been practicing Kegel’s exercise with no improvement. There was associated threat to their relationship by her partner. Perineolasty ...

It has been known for years that obstetric and gynecological surgeries, apart from bringing measurable health benefits, may also become a factor impairing or improving and sometimes changing patients’ sexual attitudes and sensations. Sexual disorders are a frequent phenomenon resulting from complications following ob-gyn procedures. It is manifested in sexual health anomalies and is corroborated by the prerequisites for the quality of life and intimate aspects of the partners’ sexual life. The development of surgical techniques, the specialization of their specific methods and the application of new materials are expected to minimize the risk of complications in that type of procedures, which should result in a decrease in post-operative sexual disorders. Great significance is attached to therapy individualization, including hormone therapy, which should increase the efficiency of the existing sexual disorder treatment. Attention is also paid to the constructive way of taking the pa...

Sexual function outcomes were analyzed in a group of women (n = 78) presenting for vaginal rejuvenation/vaginoplasty procedure for a chief complaint of vaginal laxity and decreased sensation with intercourse. Outcomes were analyzed utilizing the validated Pelvic Organ Prolapse/Urinary Incontinence Sexual Questionnaire-12 (PISQ-12) before and at least 6 months after repair with vaginal rejuvenation/vaginoplasty procedure (VR). Mean age was 43.6 ± 7.9 (range 25-62), and 19 patients (24.3%) were found to have prolapse at time of initial exam and underwent vaginal vault suspension in addition to VR. Compared preoperatively and postoperatively, the overall sexual function (Total PISQ-12) statistically improved (30.3 ± 6.6 vs. 38.2 ± 5.2, P < 0.001). All individual scores statistically improved except in 3 categories in which there was no change (Q1-desire, Q5-pain, and Q11- partner premature ejaculation). Overall sexual satisfaction improved as well as subcategories of increased sexual excitement during intercourse and overall increase in intensity of orgasms. Pain with intercourse subscores were found to be no different from preoperatively to postoperatively. Previous studies have shown that sexual function improves with repair of prolapse; however, this is the first study to show improved function using a validated questionnaire in patients undergoing VR for laxity.

Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is a serious morbidity which could occur postnatally. It is important for different members of staff (GP, midwife, obstetrician, nurse, psychosexual therapist) to be aware of this problem and its various implementations. Objectives of the review: The main scope of writing this review is to try to categorise the different forms of postpartum sexual dysfunction, and to assess the risk factors involved, with a focus on the different opinions in literature regarding the role of mode of delivery (vaginal or by caesarean section) in alleviating or aggravating the problem. Search strategy: the National Health Library electronic database was searched, including all resources. Only studies discussing the risk factors of PPFSD after vaginal birth were included. Perineal pain as a complication after episiotomy or tears was differentiated from dyspareunia, and studies on perineal pain after delivery were excluded from the review if they did not discuss the effect of the pain on sexual activity. A meta-analysis was performed to summarise the outcome of the different studies comparing the effect of modes of delivery on PPFSD. Author's conclusion: episiotomy is an important risk factor for short term PPFSD. However, there is little evidence to support a possible long term effect. Breastfeeding, use of progestogen-only pill and the lack of postpartum sexual health counselling and treatment are other significant risk factors for PPFSD. There is insufficient evidence to advocate a decision of performing a caesarean section on basis of alleviating PPFSD.

This paper documents a general description and an epigraphic analysis of the Palmyrene funerary relief belonging to the "Conde de Lagunillas" Collection at the "Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes” of Cuba. This piece appears to be the only sample of Palmyra funerary art preserved in Hispanic America. The Palmyrene Aramaic inscription on the relief (PAT 0647) is described and translated as part of the present study. In addition, each of the names mentioned in the epitaph is analyzed with respect to its etymology and some related historical and sociolinguistic aspects. Keywords: Palmyra; funerary portraiture; Palmyrene Aramaic; Palmyrene epigraphy; Conde de Lagunillas Collection.
