Fertility and Yield of agricultural land in West Bengal Districts.
American Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Economic Characterization of Predominant Farming Systems in West Bengal, India2013 •
The present article has discussed the diversification of cultivation in two regions of Indian state of West Bengal, particularly the district Purba-Medinipur and the district South 24 paraganas. This study focuses on farming systems in Mahatpur village of the Panskura region and Sasan village of the Baruipur region. The contemporary farmers of these two villages still cultivate their traditional rice beside cultivation of one important profitable crop. It is seen that flower production is fully operative in the village Mahatpur and guava production is very well-known in the village Sasan. This study also examines and compares the field types, mixed-crops, farming methods, and labor forms of the purposively selected flower farmers and guava farmers by using the methods of participant observation, case histories, individual and group interviews. It also analyzes farmer's own appraisal and plans to describe local knowledge, practices and problems among the selected farmers. This st...
The paper discusses changes in the distribution of cultivated land in West Bengal using data from NSS Employment and Unemployment Surveys. It argues that there has been an increase in the proportion of households that did not cultivate land in rural West Bengal between 1987-88 and 2011-12. Agriculture, over the years, has become unremunerative and there was a shift of workforce to non-agricultural occupations. Rural poor, main beneficiaries of land reform in West Bengal were adversely affected with the loss of cultivated land. The paper argues that the shifting of workforce to non-agriculture has taken place primarily in unorganised sector which does not provide a decent level of living.

Agriculture is an important economic activity of India especially rural India. DakshinDinajpur district of West Bengal has no industries to support its economy. So, agriculture is even more valuable here. Agriculture depends on land condition, soil characteristics, climate and irrigation along with infrastructural facilities and efficiency of farmers. The characteristics of these parameters of DakshinDinajpur are analysed. These factors control the crop patterns of different blocks of the district. The major crops are paddy, mustard, potato, wheat, jute etc. Poverty, fragmented lands, lack of land under irrigation facilities, transportation and storage facilities are the major problems of agriculture here. By solving these problems the farmers along with the whole district can progress to a greater height.
Land and soil is inseparable which are considered as important resources for mankind. The rural tracts ofWest Bengal are basically dominated by agricultural activity, where soil plays a vital role. Agricultural productivity is directly correlated to soil fertility which comprises inherent status of soil e.g. holding moisture; supplying minerals, nutrients and other imperative elements for the plant growth. Soil fertility can be amplified by external agricultural inputs like drainage, irrigation, fertilizer, implementation, scientific farming, ensuring the enhancement of soil productivity. As more than 80% of the male work force (as per Census of India, 2001) in Banagram mouza is directly or indirectly dependent on the primary activities, mainly agriculture, therefore only increased agricultural productivity can augment the rural economy profoundly. Therefore study of crops and their scientific management are considered to be broad societal concerns in present context, while the study of land use pattern carries the reflection of anthropogenic influence. The present work puts emphasis on productivity of crops and its association with agricultural inputs and soil fertility. Total agricultural operation from sowing to the selling of crops seems to be a great gamble in the mouza as sowing depends on the vagaries of monsoon and selling price depends on commission agents and mediators. Keeping all these in mind the following section also tries to address the major agricultural constraints faced by the cultivators
The present study has described that India occupies 2.4 per cent of the world's land area and supports over 17.5 per cent of the world's population. India has more arable land area than any country except the United States, and more water area than any country except Canada and the United States. Indian life, therefore, revolves mostly around agriculture and allied activities in small villages, where the overwhelming majority of the population live.
Land is the basic resource of a nation. Utilization of land, maintains reciprocal relationship between the prevailing ecological condition and human society of any region. Observation of Land and its uses are important aspects of geographical studies and also the processes of exploring the land for specific objectives. The concept of land use implies the interaction between land and environment. The increasing population pressure, low man-land ratio, increasing rate of degradation of land are also responsible for the optimal utilization of land resources. The spatial information on land utilization in the modes of statistical data and associated maps is essential for development, planning and management. The degree of utilization of land can be accessed from its detailed analysis which is the proper indicators of regional as well as local development. The present study entails different aspects of crop land use in connection with the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the same. Due to varied environmental situation proper planning and management practices of crop land restoration and development are taken up as a process of holistic development.
The main objectives of this paper is to explain the trends and patterns of yield rate of principal crops in West Bengal for one decade and also to find out some factors those are responsible for the variation in yield rate of principal crop in West Bengal. The sample consists of a cross section of 18 districts of West Bengal and the period begins from 2000-01 to 2011-12. The study uses seven types of crops as principal crops and finds that there is a mixed trend in yield rate of all those seven principal crops in West Bengal for the referred period. Using pooled regression techniques (ordinary least square) the study observe that, rainfall, chemical fertilizer, percentage share of irrigated area and per hectare working capital for principal crop play significant role in explaining the yield rate of principal crops in West Bengal. Chemical fertilizer, percentage share of irrigated area and per hectare working capital for principal crop is positively related with yield rate of principal crops in West Bengal. On the other hand, rainfall is negatively related with yield rate of principal crops in West Bengal.
