The Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God2018 •
The purpose of this essay on the feast of the Dormition is to summarise its origin, meaning and importance as a significant part of the liturgical year. The paper covers some historical facts and discusses liturgical texts as well as spirituality and theology of the feast, mentions the general characteristics of the feast, and concludes with analysing the festal icon, as well as a comprehensive summary and some final thoughts.
Christian liturgical commemoration has received little attention from philosophers of religion. This article provides an exploration of this topic. I argue that Christian liturgical commemoration is a response in a dialectical relationship with God that has three stereotypical properties: to think about and let one's life be influenced by the relevant persons and events, honoring the relevant persons, and preserving the memory of the persons and events in question. This practice has its roots in the Old and New Testament concepts of commemoration and remembrance, referred by such verbs as zachar and mimnēskomai. On these concepts, commemoration is a response to divine action. Partly on the basis of this dialectical relationship account of commemoration and partly on the basis of general considerations, I also argue that Christian liturgical commemoration has both events and persons as its objects, that something is a commemorative vehicle if it was designed or instituted as such and a commemorative vehicle for someone if that person takes it to be a commemorative means, and that one participates in Christian liturgical commemoration if one successfully thinks about the object in question and lets one's life be influenced by that.

The Second Vatican Council uses several titles for Mary. In its chapter on Mary, Lumen Gentium calls her mother, virgin, daughter, and temple of the Holy Spirit (LG 52-69). Although it did not make it into the Second Vatican’s documents, there is another remarkable description of Mary as God’s spouse or bride.

The many feasts of Mary in the contemporary Catholic liturgy2021 •
The Protevangelium of James (PJ) has been widely diffused among the churches: there is evidence of its use by many of the fathers and it survives (wholly or in part) in Greek, Latin, Syrian, Coptic, and Armenian, and in many later versions. While it is often stated that, in the west at least, it was condemned in the Decretum Gelasianum, this did not lessen its significance. The embarrassment of the source is more than made up for by the long continuity of recollection. The persistence of the feasts derived from the PJ shows that the ritual memory of the Christian church is still a much more complex phenomenon within Christianity than any body of material which might be labelled 'early Christian history'. This complexity is seen most clearly in that the feasts are still celebrated while PJ has been discarded. Ritual memory functions in a more all-embracing way in Christian society than historical reconstruction. While the popularity of PJ from the second century onwards shows that the historical form has always been part of Christian identity, it is as a wondrous tale, with its convenient miracles to reinforce its religious preferences, that it became influential.
MARY - FOLLOWER OF CHRIST – MOTHER OF THE CHURCH “VIRGIN, YET A MOTHER; DAUGHTER OF THY SON”

The present article contends that prior to Vatican II, Mariology paralleled Christology. Jesus was true God and true man, Mary was theotokos. With Vatican II, the patristic tradition came to the fore and Mary was seen in her connection to the Church. The climax came when Mariology was presented as part of the doctrine of the Church (and formed Chapter 8 of Lumen Gentium). With the establishment of the memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church (celebrated on the Monday after Pentecost), her function of follower of Christ and disciple became clear. It provided an opportunity to read the Scriptures pertaining to Mary in the NT in the light of openness to the Word of God, obedience, the following of Christ, discipleship.
The article begins with an examination of the biblical origin of Christ's church at Mt. Sinai. It then compares what happened here to the beginnings of the NT Church at Pentecost in terms of the way contemporary Judaism understood the signs of God's presence at Sinai.

Pope Francis has established a new Marian feast, Mary the Mother of the Church on 03rd March 2018 and later a decree by Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacrament was issued. In 1964, Blessed Pope Paul VI formally declared Mary as the “Mother of the Church.” Mary, the Mother of the Church finds its roots in the Scripture and ancient Catholic traditions. In my attempt to describe this current Marian feast, I will briefly present the exegesis of John 19:25-27 as the biblical foundation. An additional insights on immediate context, i.e., seamless robe and “it is finished.” As the analysis begins, one can see that how the birth of the Church is taking place and Mary, the Mother of Jesus is given a new task, i.e., to be Mother of the Church.
