Fighting against thalassemia: an ancestral curseGlobally, thalassemia is a major health problem. Every year on the 8th of May, World Thalassemia Day is celebrated with so as to increase awareness about the diseases among the general people across the world.affects as many as 1 in 30 pregnancies in China, India, and Pakistan, 1 in 100 pregnancies in Thailand, and 1 in 1000 pregnancies in Northern Europe and the United States (Cole and peter, 2016).Like other parts of the global, thalassemia is the most common inherited diseases that are prevalent in children, causing severe anemia problem in Bangladesh.In order to gain the upper hand in the diseases what is the most needed initiative is building up awareness about the dire consequences and promoting the practice of premarital screening regarding this.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the parental knowledge about Thalassemia. METHODOLOGY: The Data was collected from the 120 registered Thalassemia major patients' parents with the help of convenient sampling. The structured interview schedule as used as a tool for data collection. The structured interview schedule was discussed with two senior doctors (>8 years' experience) working in the Thalassemia Centers and public health Institution. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data which include frequency, percentage. Questions regarding illness, awareness about blood screening, mode of transmission of disease, knowledge and practices abut prevention and treatment of disease was asked. RESULTS: Among the 120 respondents, the majority of the mothers 75.0% were visited to the thalassemia center for the treatment of their thalassemia children. About 73.3% parents were belonging to the Seraiki ethnic background. Sixty three percent parents monthly income was less than 10,000 rupees. Only 50% parents know that thalassemia is an inherited disease. CONCLUSION: The study concluded that the parental knowledge about thalassemia was very poor. Thalassemia awareness program should be proposed for the general public and the Thalassemia prevention program must be introduced at districts levels.

Awareness Regarding Thalassemia in General Population of Rahim Yar Khan, Pakistan2020 •
Background: Thalassemia, an inherited blood disorder represents a significant burden for many countries across the globe and the knowledge related to this illness is very limited. The preventive practices, among people especially from developing countries. In Pakistan, Thalassemia is a serious health problem bearing 5 to 8% frequency of beta-Thalassemia gene without discrimination of ethnic groups. Objective: To assess the awareness level regarding Thalassemia in general population of Rahim Yar Khan, a district of Southern Punjab, Pakistan. Methodology: Study Design: Cross sectional study. A total of 400 adults of 18 years and above age, were selected randomly, from the households of the Rahim Yar Khan City and one Rural Union council. Out of 400 subjects, only 131, reported that they had heard the name ”Thalassemia”, hence for analysis of awareness, the data of only these 131 was used. A structured questionnaire was designed which included information on; gender, age and 24 questions about awareness of Thalassemia disease. Level of Awareness was ascertained by response of these 24 questions and was categorized as poor, average and good. The persons answering less than 12 questions correctly were considered to have poor knowledge, answers of 13-18 questions were labeled as possessing average knowledge and the persons were included in category of having good knowledge who answered more than 18 questions correctly. Data was analyzed by using SPSS 20. Results: Out of 131 study subjects , who reported to have ever heard of word Thalassemia, level of awareness about Thalassemia was found to be “Good” among 7 (5.4%) persons, 27 (20.6%) persons have an average knowledge about Thalassemia and a large number of people 97 (74%) have poor knowledge about Thalassemia disease. Conclusion: Public knowledge regarding Thalassemia was found to be poor among general population of Rahim Yar Khan, Pakistan.

Level of awareness regarding Thalassemia, Riyadh Saudi Arabia2020 •
Background: Thalassemia is one of the most common autosomal recessive and familiar hemoglobin disorders. Objective: This research aims to assess the level of awareness regarding thalassemia in Riyadh. Methodology: Institutional based cross-sectional, conducted in Riyadh PHC centers, including adults, and excluding health care personnel. 260 respondents chosen through systematic random sampling, data collected using a self-administered questionnaire includes information about causes risk factors, clinical picture, management, and prevention developed specifically for the purpose of this study. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) was used to interpret data. Significance was considered if P-Value ≤ 0.05. Results: A significant statistically relation (p-value 0.047) between income and level of awareness regarding the management of thalassemia. (65.8%) of participants had a high level of awareness regarding complications. Risk factors have shown that (47.7%) had moderate awareness. 75% had poor ANALYSIS ARTICLE ANALYSIS knowledge regarding the clinical picture. There is a significant relationship between the level of education and prevention (p-value 0.008). Conclusion: The level of awareness regarding thalassemia is around moderate, except for the clinical picture which is low. There is a relation between the educational level and the awareness in regards of prevention and risk factor of thalassemia.

Knowledge and Awareness of Parents Toward Thalassemia2021 •
Background: Thalassemias are the most common heritable blood disorders that represents a major public concern. Poor awareness and lack of knowledge lead to increase number of carrier that is a silent reservoir of the disease. To observe the knowledge and awareness level of parents of thalassemic children about the disease. Materials and methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the Thalassemia ward of Chattogram Maa Shishu-O-General Hospital, Chattogram from July 2013 to June, 2014. Parents of 70 thalassemia patients aged 2-18 years interviewed with a formulated questionnaire based on knowledge status and awareness level of parents towards thalassemia. Identification of Common Ways for Thalassemia Awareness in Medical and Non-Medical Professionals2017 •
To identify the common ways of thalassemia awareness in medical and non-medical professions. A simple random sampling technique was used for 130 (N) participants. A designed questionnaire with multiple sections (Demographics, Awareness about Diagnosis, Management and Prevention) for the study was used. The data was analyzed for frequency in terms of percentages by using SPSS version 23.
