Beyond the Brothels: A Qualitative Study of the Destitute Female Sex Workers of Central Delhi Red Light Area2017 •
The term ‘sex workers’ refers to those involved in prostitution. This particular term is preferred as it does not have the derogatory, sexist connotation that the term ‘prostitute’ has. Belonging to a highly stigmatized profession with no financial and familial support forthcoming, the latter years of the lives of destitute female sex workers are spent in abject misery and poverty. Effort has been made to study the socio economic status and the ways adopted by these women, post active prostitution period, to support themselves and their families. This paper is based on the field study conducted in central Delhi red light area during August-September, 2016. Direct interviews with the respondents using questionnaires as well as participant observation techniques were used to collect the data. The study indicate that destitute female sex workers, once out of active prostitution, start working as domestic helpers, work with local voluntary organizations, or as helpers in brothels. The i...

Urban Nightscape and Issues of Gender in Call Centre Industry in India2014 •
Women in India were always accepted in conventional profiles of nurses, teachers, secretaries or clerks. But today, against this phenomenon a large number of women are joining call centres. In a transnational call centre, work during day time is very rare and typically starts in late evening hours. This comes into contrast with traditional gender roles of women as mother, wife or care taker within the family. Indian society, with all its diversities, remains traditional patriarchal system. As women enter the global labor pool, particularly its nightscape, they experience negative gender based reactions like “what these women are doing in the night?” or “why are they out of their places for so late?” which are generally given to prostitutes or bar dancers. These kinds of reactions or comments provide a context for thinking about women’s access to night shift employment opportunities. Against this background I have made an attempt to study and analyse how does their family relate themselves to their work? How they negotiate their gendered identity and whether call centre industry in context of night shift employment is better suited for women professionals? Thus, it would be useful to look into the new image of women in India “breaking of stereotypes” and working in non-traditional sector of employment.

Reading any city as text is a challenge. we have tried to delve into some of the most striking aspects of Delhi. Some of us studied old Delhi and its historical significance. We documented how certain traditional practices and customs still resonate within the bylanes of Old Delhi, making it a rich depository of history, while simultaneously connecting it with the new metropolis. others from our team studied the effects of partition. They came across several striking revelations about the hardships of refugees who influence the city socially, culturally, economically, and politically. From the perspective of viewing Delhi as a melting pot, some of us did our research on migrants and how they have come to define and contribute to the culture of the city. The independent music industry and its presence in the city, which is a part of the new idea of entertainment, drew the attention of some of our team. We explored the various music festivals to document the shift from the pre-existing music industry which was predominantly Bollywood music, to a new, independent music scene. Cinema was yet another aspect of the cultural life of the city that we examined. Our research focused on how cinema halls in Delhi encode the changing trends, which eventually led to the emergence of a new kind of cinema with the coming multiplexes. Two events: the Asian games of 1982, and the Commonwealth games of 2010, which radically altered the design and plan of Delhi and transformed it into a world-class city were explored by some students, keeping in mind the original architectural plan of the city.
Relatively high wages and the opportunity to be part of an upscale, globalized work environment draw many in India to the call center industry. At the same time, night shift employment presents women, in particular, with new challenges alongside the opportunities. This book explores how beliefs about what constitutes "women's work" are evolving in response to globalization. Working the Night Shift is the first in-depth study of the transnational call center industry that is written from the point of view of women workers. It uncovers how call center employment affects their lives, mainly as it relates to the anxiety that Indian families and Indian society have towards women going out at night, earning a good salary, and being exposed to western culture. This timely account illustrates the ironic and, at times, unsettling experiences of women who enter the spaces and places made accessible through call center work. PROSTITUTION IN INDIA: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS2021 •
Prostitution is defined as providing sex services for a fee. It encompasses not only sex gratification but also related activities such as customer solicitation, brothel management, pimping or dealing with prostitutes, sex trafficking, and other activities that aid in the growth of the sex industry. It took the path of devotion in India. Prostitution is a severe social problem in India, and its remedy has proven challenging, despite the fact that it is an ever-present issue. Prostitution, like other forms of violence perpetrated by males against women, is a gender-specific phenomena, with the vast majority of victims being girls and women and the offenders always being men. The Devadasi system existed in the past, and it was common practise among Hindus to donate their female child for the purpose of dancing at temples and worshipping God. However, as feudalism faded, these so-called Devadasis lost their guardians and were mistreated by temple priests. This practise flourished during the British era, when outsiders curtailed traditional textile industries, armament, and other industries, forcing these populations to turn to prostitution for a living. Prostitution is not explicitly banned in India, but it is considered unethical by the courts, and certain acts that facilitate prostitution are also considered unlawful. This research paper will critically analyze that Prostitution in India should be Legalize or not.
