Is a exploration of myths, legends, and folklore associated with the mysterious islands of the Atlantic Ocean. The book delves into the enchanting narratives of legendary places such as Atlantis, Antillia, and the Seven Cities of Cibola, weaving together a tapestry of early explorations, maritime history, and cultural heritage. Higginson's work captures the imagination with tales of fabled lands (some that cant be proved to be myth or truth), ancient mariners, and mystical voyages, offering readers a rich historical narrative that blends historical fact with speculative mythology. This text serves as both a historical account and a literary exploration of the human fascination with the unknown, highlighting the intersection of romanticism, exploration, and the enduring allure of mythical islands. Book Overview: This writing is a seminal work that examines the lore and legends surrounding the enigmatic islands purported to exist in the Atlantic Ocean. Higginson, a respected historian and author, compiles various accounts and myths, presenting them in a narrative that is both scholarly and engaging. The book explores a range of legendary islands, starting with the well-known myth of Atlantis, described by Plato as a powerful and advanced civilization that mysteriously disappeared beneath the waves. Higginson provides an analysis of the historical and cultural impact of the Atlantis myth, considering its influence on subsequent explorations and its enduring presence in popular imagination. Another focal point is the legend of Antillia, an island said to be discovered by Portuguese sailors in the 15th century. This myth, rooted in the Age of Discovery, reflects the era's spirit of exploration and the hope of finding new lands and untold riches. Higginson discusses the cartographic evidence and the varying accounts from sailors and explorers who claimed to have sighted Antillia, adding a layer of historical context to the legend. The Seven Cities of Cibola, another fascinating tale, is linked to the Spanish expeditions in the New World. These cities were rumored to be made of gold, enticing explorers like Francisco Vásquez de Coronado to embark on perilous journeys in search of wealth and glory. Higginson examines the origins of this legend and its consequences for indigenous populations and European settlers. Higginson also delves into Norse sagas, which recount the voyages of Vikings to lands such as Vinland, thought to be part of North America. These sagas blend historical events with mythic elements, providing a unique perspective on early transatlantic voyages and their impact on European understanding of the world .Throughout the book, Higginson maintains an academic tone, meticulously referencing historical documents, maps, and previous scholarly work. He offers critical insights into the ways these myths have shaped human curiosity and driven exploration. By interweaving historical facts with speculative storytelling, (This Book ) "Tales of the Enchanted Islands of the Atlantic" serves as a enduring power of myth and legend in the context of Atlantic exploration. The Great Mosque at Córdoba does not face Mecca as we moderns think it should. This is also true of many other medieval mosques. However, now that we have some control over the medieval textual sources relating to the Kaʿba and to the qibla, we can see that in the first two centuries of Islam, and occasionally also long thereafter, astronomical horizon phenomena were used to face the Kaʿba, itself astronomically aligned. From the 9 th century onwards, mainly directions based on geographical data and mathematical procedures were used to align mosques towards Mecca. Nevertheless some of the earliest mosques, as in Jerusalem and Damascus, were aligned with pre-Islamic religious edifices or complexes. In the case of the Great Mosque of Córdoba, it was a suburban Roman street-plan, revealed by excavations only some 20 years ago, which defined the qibla-axis of the Mosque, and this happened to be one of the several qibla-directions favoured in al-Andalus. So in medieval terms the Mosque could indeed have been thought to be facing the Kaʿba. Summary In Muslim practice mosques should face the qibla, that is, the sacred direction toward the sacred Kaʿba in Mecca. Why is it then that the Great Mosque of Cór-doba, established in the 780s, faces the deserts of Algeria rather than the deserts

Started as an investigation on the common elements of the ancient and the contemporary city of Thessaloniki (Greece), this study is also an argument for the essential role of historical plans as complementary sources for urban archaeology – especially when the non-regenerable resource they represent, i.e., the historical urban fabric, has been predominantly lost. Based largely on two directions of analysis – the configuration of the street network, and the general layout of the palatial complex of Galerius, along with a brief assessment of the recent built stock evolution in the background –, the main conclusion is that what used to be, no more than a century ago, an authentic historical city that developed organically over two millennia, is now a wide historical center with a compromised urban fabric, a limited (if not already exceeded) potential for development, and serious problems in the interpretation of the historical city. These outcomes all stem from the urban planning approach and implementation over the course of the last century. The limited set of data employed in this study, consisting of one historical city plan, and a couple of archaeological plans focused on one relevant area of the ancient city, might be perceived as a basis for a narrow and distorted view. However, I view it as a representative sample for what could be only the tip of the iceberg in deciphering what was actually lost in the process. Rather than a gain for urban archeology, the process of urban development and renewal (particularly in the post-war period) is, in my view, a negative and irreversible interference with a historical site, transforming a living ancient-modern city into a modern museum of an ancient city.
Ekstasis: revista de hermenêutica e fenomenologia, 2022
I will address a possibility centered on the affective disposition and its respective temples. It is a form considered by Heidegger himself and worked on since the beginning of his thinking in fundamental ontology, although projected epochally in ontohistorical thought. What we find around the treatment of the affective thing is an indirectly proportional relation: to the intentional dependence still corresponds a cognitive determination; whereas to the affective independence of the subjective states this possibility is forbidden. It is not wrong to indicate that the irruption of phenomenology, initially through its founder Edmund Husserl, will open ways to think radically about the affective sphere. The beginning of such perspectives was given with what Husserl unfolded in the Logical Investigations, starting from a certain contrast with what was proposed by his professor Franz Brentano.
