Not only is the since 1972 quinquennial held documenta a seismograph of contemporary art, but also an object of historization for decades. These reflections bring the most remarkable figure of Werner Haftmann into focus. However, the strong interest in Haftmann is not only owed to his responsibility for the first three documentas. Since the early 1950s, Haftmann weighed in on the genealogy of modern painting - with the documentas as “illustrations” for his arguments. This article compiles Haftmann’s work till the end of documenta 3 in 1964 and points out inherent contradictions. In particular, this concerns the negotiation of artistic individual and collective and the systemic suppression of the influence of natural science and photography. It will have to be seen that Haftmann played a major role in establishing abstract painting in postwar Germany whilst relying on traditional paradigms, for example Pinder’s model of “generations”, Kandinskys antagonism of the abstract and the real as well as the concept of artistic genius. Consequently, it is vital that Haftmann’s OEuvre will altogether need a much more precise regarding of its progressive and conservative potentials in order to be adequately evaluated in the future.

JahrhundertsThis paper deliniates the history of panoramas of ancient sites in the 19th cent. as an instrument to visualize these antiquities in the big cities of Europe. It concentrates on Joseph Buehlmann's and Alexander von Wagner's panoramical reconstruction of ancient Rome in 1886. The colossal representation showed the (non historical) moment, when Constantine entered the city after the battle of the milivian bridge. The paper discusses the idea of 'authenticity' and the historical impact of its authors. The now lost panorama has been 'reconstructed' in Leipzig and now in Dresden by Yadegar Asisi.

»Art without an object but with an impact« is the title of a project realized by the artist George Steinmann together with Bauart Architects for the ara region bern ag. This project for the new headquarters of Bern’s leading wastewater treatment facility began in July 2008 and ended in December 2011.
