Using Caenorhabditis elegans as an infection host model for Vibrio cholerae predator interactions, we discovered a bacterial cytotoxin, MakA, whose function as a virulence factor relies on secretion via the flagellum channel in a proton motive force-dependent manner. The MakA protein is expressed from the polycistronic makDCBA (motility-associated killing factor) operon. Bacteria expressing makDCBA induced dramatic changes in intestinal morphology leading to a defecation defect, starvation and death in C. elegans. The Mak proteins also promoted V. cholerae colonization of the zebrafish gut causing lethal infection. A structural model of purified MakA at 1.9 Å resolution indicated similarities to members of a superfamily of bacterial toxins with unknown biological roles. Our findings reveal an unrecognized role for V. cholerae flagella in cytotoxin export that may contribute both to environmental spread of the bacteria by promoting survival and proliferation in encounters with predat...

Paulo Coelho is a Brazilian writer and lyricist known for using rich symbolism in many of his works. He is honored with many international awards for his prolific contribution to the field of literature. In 1984, he wrote his first novel, “The Pilgrimage,” which is a collection of his spiritual inclination on his way to Santiago de Compostela, but he did not receive much acclamation for this. He achieved fame with his second novel, “The Alchemist,” which has sold at least 65millions of copies and holds a position in Guinness World Record for being one of the most widely translated books in the contemporary world. His mesmerizing novel ‘The Alchemist’ is regarded as one of the magnum opuses that deals with the self-recognition of the protagonist of the novel.

The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effectiveness of santoquin (Sq) and vitamin E (VE) as feed additives to improve performance of male local ducks. The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized design. Two hundred and eighty male day old ducks (dod) of male Mojosari Alabio crosbred ducks were allocated to ten treatments with four replicates and seven ducks/replicate. The experimental diets were: Basal-diet (RO) without antioxidant (RB) (control); RB + 50 ppm santoquin (Sq) + 100 IU vitamin E (VE) (R1); RB + 50 ppm Sq + 200 IU VE (R2); RB + 50 ppm Sq + 300 IU VE (R3); RB + 100 ppm Sq + 100 IU VE (R4); RB + 100 ppm Sq + 200 IU VE (R5); RB + 100 ppm Sq + 300 IU VE (R6); RB + 150 ppm Sq + 100 IU VE (R7); RB + 150 ppm Sq + 200 IU VE (R8); RB + 150 ppm Sq + 300 IU VE (R9). The ducks were fed ad libitum for 8 weeks. Parameters observed were: feed consumption, live weight, body weight gain, feed conversion rate (FCR) and mortality. The results showed that Sq and ...

Cancellation of planned surgery impacts substantially on patients and health systems. This study describes the incidence and reasons for cancellation of inpatient surgery in the UK NHS. We conducted a prospective observational cohort study over 7 consecutive days in March 2017 in 245 NHS hospitals. Occurrences and reasons for previous surgical cancellations were recorded. Using multilevel logistic regression, we identified patient- and hospital-level factors associated with cancellation due to inadequate bed capacity. We analysed data from 14 936 patients undergoing planned surgery. A total of 1499 patients (10.0%) reported previous cancellation for the same procedure; contemporaneous hospital census data indicated that 13.9% patients attending inpatient operations were cancelled on the day of surgery. Non-clinical reasons, predominantly inadequate bed capacity, accounted for a large proportion of previous cancellations. Independent risk factors for cancellation due to inadequate be...
