Filariasis is a worldwide health problem in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, the Western Pacific, and parts of America. Out of 893 million people in 49 countries at risk of infection, 120 million people are infected presenting commonly with lymphatic filariasis. (1). In developing countries, filariasis is still a wide public health problem but It is extremely rare in Iraq. There are eight species of filarial parasite can cause infection to the human being. Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and Brugia timori cause Lymphatic filariasis, while cutaneous lesions are caused mainly by Onchocerca volvulus and Loa loa (2).
The Nigerian lymphatic filariasis elimination programme (NLFEP) has set 2015 to eliminate the disease in the country. The successes of this programme defends of identify and treating endemic communities. Unfortunately, information on the distribution and nature of the disease from many parts of the country is lacking. This study was carried out to assess the clinical and parasitological prevalence in three (3) communities in Jahun Local government of Jigawa state, Nigeria. One hundred and fifty (150) participants were assessed. Clinical examination of the participants was carried out to assess the manifestation associated with the infection. Blood samples were collected between 10 pm and 1 am local time by finger prick method and stained with Giemsa stain for examination to establish the presence of Wuchereria bancrofti. Chronic manifestation such as lymphoedema of the legs, scrotum and breasts where observed during the study. 11.3% had lymphoedema, and hydrocele was 7.0%. Involvement of the breast was rare in the study population. There was no association between the clinical manifestations and communities, gender and age (P>0.05).The overall microfilariae prevalence was 2% and microfilariae density was between 1-5 mf/µl in the study area. There was no statistically significant association between microfilaria prevalence, density, age and gender (P>0.05). lymphatic filariasis is endemic in the study area, the prevalence is above the threshold level of endemicity recommended by WHO for selecting endemic communities for the mass drugs administration MDA to eradicate the diseases.
Survey of prevalence of clinical manifestation of lymphatic filariasis was carried out in Jalingo LGA. Informed oral consent of individuals were sought and obtained before they were examined in secrecy for clinical signs and symptoms of filariasis. Night blood samples of consenting individuals were also obtained using finger-prick method between 20.00hrs and 01.00hrs. Four-hundred and fifty eight night blood samples were collected, and 33.58% were infected with Wuchereria bancrofti. There was a significant difference in infection among the different age groups. The various clinical manifestations encountered were: itching, adenolymphagitis, dermatitis, elephantiasis, hydrocoele, hernia and lymphoedema of breast at varying rates. There was a close association between the occurrence of W. bancrofti and itching, adenolymphagitis, hydrocoel, dermititis; while weak Original Research Article

2021 •
Quick Response Code Abstract: In India, human lymphatic filariasis is the most common vector borne disease after malaria. Lymphatic Filariasis caused by nematode worms Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi is a major health problem in India, which afflict mostly poor people. The disease leads to disfiguring pathological conditions, severe social stigma, psychological problems and huge economic losses on affected individuals and communities. Filariasis is a major public health problem in India and inspite of existence of the National Filaria Control Programme since 1955, currently there may be up to 31 million microfilaraemics, 23 million cases of symptomatic filariasis, and about 473 million individuals potentially at risk of infection. Over the last 10 years advances have led to new diagnostic / treatment tools and control strategies for filariasis. With the advent of new and easy to implement control strategies, Lymphatic filariasis elimination programs have gained much momentum ...

Lymphatic filariasis among the Yakurr people of Cross River State, Nigeria2012 •
Background In order to initiate a disease elimination programme for lymphatic filariasis based on mass drug administration, a proper understanding of the geographical distribution and degree of risk is essential. Methods An investigation of lymphatic filariasis due to Wuchereria bancrofti was carried out among 785 people in four communities of Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria between March and August, 2009. Finger prick blood smear samples collected from the subjects were examined for W. bancrofti using standard parasitological protocol. The subjects were also screened for clinical manifestations of lymphatic filariasis. Results Of the 785 persons examined, 48 (6.1%) were positive for microfilariae in their thick blood smear. There was a significant difference in the prevalence of lymphatic filariasis among the various age groups (P < 0.01) although peak prevalence occurred between 41 – 60 years. There was no significant difference in prevalence and dens...
