Economic inequality in the US has increased since the 1950s, yet this has not been accompanied by more progressive taxation and redistribution. The question how US Americans (mis-)perceive this inequality and to what extent this perception can translate into a demand for redistribution has therefore become an important policy question. We investigate how perceived income inequality causally affects people's fairness views and their support for redistribution in a comprehensive and well-powered survey experiment with a large sample of US Americans. We find precisely estimated null effects. While US Americans underestimate the extent of poverty and, in particular, strongly overestimate the income of top earners, there is no evidence for a causal effect of perceived inequality on policy views or behavior. We test the role of a series of moderators and find that this null effect holds for different income groups and party affiliations, as well as for participants with different levels of trust in government and different levels of perceived personal autonomy. Our study thus suggests that informing people about the extent of inequality in a society will not effectively alter their support for redistributive policies.

Clay female figurines recovered from central and northern Sudan suggest there are cultural similarities between the Neolithic (5000-2800 BC) and Meroitic periods (400 BC-AD 350). Female figurines were recovered from several Meroitic sites, including from the elite cemeteries in el-Bagrawwaya west, the domestic strata in the royal city of Meroe, the Meroitic settlement in Karanog at lower Nubia, and at el-Muweis south of the Meroitic Town. Here, I argue that female forms in the Meroitic period, like some of the Neolithic samples, and their continuation in the archaeological record, show the social importance of females across the cultural history of ancient Sudan. The paper describes the figurines and uses a comparative method to study and reassess the Meroitic female figurines according to their similarities with other samples from the Neolithic and prehistoric periods.

This paper examines how two small companies adopted new business strategies to exploit the market opportunities for web-enabled software. The first case study (Beaumont Travel) transformed itself from a bus company into a software house for the transportation industry, producing software modules for central daily business management functions and field-bus passenger and vehicle maintenance information. In the second case study, a small software house (QEB Solutions) saw the opportunity to develop web portals to existing back-end systems, and has worked with a range of customers to develop a new revenue stream that will support the company in future years. Both these business projects were undertaken via the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) scheme, which supports university academics working with industry on strategic projects.

The paper examines the long run effects of interest rate liberalization and institutional quality on the development of stock market in seven selected subSaharan African (SSA) countries using panel dataset that spans 1990-2013. The study employs dynamic heterogeneous panel method using the technique of pooled mean group. The results reveal that on the average liberalizing the interest rates has a negative long run impact on the development of the stock markets in the seven selected SSA economies. Institutional quality on the other hand has significant positive relationship with the development of stock market. The policy recommendation as a result of this finding is that liberalization of interest rates in the SSA region should be a guided one.

A critical component in the autonomous vehicle navigation process is path planning. To this end, the present survey focused on the investigation of research contributions on the optimal path/routes scheduling of autonomous vehicles. The main objective of the conducted review is the classification of published relative research papers, according to their optimization criteria, optimization models, and optimization methods.

Swift heavy ion irradiation was carried out to examine the ionization effects on structural changes of δ-Sc4Hf3O12 in which oxygen vacancies are regularly arranged. The specimens were irradiated at room temperature with 92 MeV xenon ions to fluences ranging from 3 × 1012 to 1 × 1014/cm2 and characterized by grazing (glancing) incidence x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the pristine long-range ordered rhombohedral δ-phase undergoes a reconstructive transformation toward a long-range disordered cubic oxygen-deficient fluorite phase promoted by ionization effects. In addition, an ordered phase with a short-range structure different from the δ-type was formed in a layer going from the surface to a depth of ∼4.5 μm in the specimen irradiated to a fluence of 1 × 1014/cm2.
