The volume edited by Kerstin Jacobsson and Steven Saxonberg contains a collection of studies about the specifics of the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and selected social movements in post-communist countries in Europe. The main aim of the book is to re-examine the notion of NGO-ization, which describes non-profit organizations and civic charities as structured, professional, and dependent on grants. The NGO-ization theory reveals the mechanism of the negative influence of donors on the development of NGOs. After regular financial support the sponsored NGOs usually change their modus operandi, and eventually focus much more on the mining of funds than on social work. On the other hand, they work only when they have the financial resources. This means that NGOs actually become quite addicted to the system of grants, which changes their focus from helping people to fundraising. The idea of NGO-ization is commented on in almost every chapter of the book from various perspectives.

The article describes the role of interdisciplinarity in the process of making science. Two patterns of research and development of discipline are presented: the closed pattern which concentrates on specialization and the open pattern which fosters interdisciplinary science. The key to success is always openness for new scientiÞ c experiences and communities. The conclusion of the article is a proposal for Þ nding new scientiÞ c communities, which could be interested in new ideas, research and thoughts where interdisciplinary analyses are not acceptable to the local scientiÞ c community.

Modern democracy in the Polish State, as well as respect for minorities of all kinds and women themselves, is collapsing in favour of a particularly close affiliation between the State and the Church. The separation of these two institutions is becoming negligible, if it still exists, and the state and the church have become allies of each other with any educated and/or intelligent element that does not support such a practice. The medieval practices, the stigmatisation of individual groups, patriarchy and the lack of respect for the constitution oppress societies, oppress the rights of citizens and show their place in the ranks. More and more rights are granted only to privileged groups, while others, such as women, LGBTQA+, migrants, the disabled, political opponents, or anyone else who does not support the current actions of the most influential institutions, remain ignored or muddled, vis-à-vis potential voters of the ruling party. Meanwhile, influential citizens can afford to d...

Drama may be a useful technique for improving pupils' language acquisition in any subject. Implementing such a strategy in an actual classroom setting could be a problem for any instructor or person. The idea behind this study was to establish whether using drama-based activities in pedagogy has any positive educational outcomes. The study used a quantitative technique, and included a specific section about students’ perspective on data collection from over a thousand students. They are studying in different faculties in undergraduate courses where English is a compulsory subject. The researcher independently designed the research instrument which was used to elicit responses from learners. The data collection method uses purposive sampling in the present study. Activities that encourage language-learning skills include role-plays and extended role-plays, which are described in the research as drama elements that can be useful in teaching languages. The study's findings supp...

Time, being a philosophical and logical category, is one of the main forms of the existence of matter. Also, time is a universal form of successive change of phenomena. From the standpoint of linguistics, the linguistic category of tense is a grammatical-lexical category with its forms and units for nouns, verbs, adjectives, numerals and adverbs. Tense as a category of personal forms of the verb and its stem is a grammatical and lexical category that is inherent in all verbs (which is the grammatical parameter of the category) and is somewhat different for each verb individually due to its formal and semantic features (which is the lexical parameter of the category). The subject of this article is tense as a lexical and grammatical category. The authors carry out a semantic, idio-stylistic and comparative analysis of the lexico-semantic field of the category of tense in Russian and English using observational methods, continuous sampling of lexical units, linguistic description and ...

Two basic ideas of what a university should be have competed throughout history. The oldest conception of the university can be traced to Plato’s Academy. This idea was later developed by Wilhelm von Humboldt and revived by Allan Bloom. According to this approach the university is a multi-functional institution which combines education with the pursuit of truth. Mediaeval universities, the Napoleonic university and the idea of university as a higher vocational school developed according to the assumptions of the newer model. There are also a number of intermediate approaches where the point of departure is the didactic function but the didactic process is based on the specific values of the older approach, i.e., general and theoretic knowledge. These models were radically questioned in the second half of the twentieth century. The crisis of the university is partly a function of the unfavourable cultural climate (disbelief in the value of the scientific method and the validity of kn...

Some  universities in  Central and Eastern Europe are facing a crisis of identity.  Academic institutions have for centuries   developed  independence,  liberal education and independent research.  Freedom and independence have  always been essential   for  the quality of academic work.  Thanks to this , scholars and scientists  were restricted only by  their own ignorance, which in its  turn , was restricted by experience. It meant that the age of the scholar was usually connected to his knowledge. The older scientist had to be smarter and wiser.

Many countries have had people in power who were mower-mad and hungry for money as their representatives. In the case of Poland, there is quiet acquiescence to unethical actions by the authorities for the sake of one's own benefits, and a commonly accepted aversion to politicians (Zalec, 2022). of all kinds, which may be linked to the country's history. Those in power have become usurpers who do not care about the rules, the constitution or EU law, nor are they afraid of any punishment. Those who oppose these precedents become enemies, murderers or are accused of spreading propaganda. The country is divided into two camps - those who support the current government and those who are against it. The consequences do not only affect individuals, they are sometimes extended to entire municipalities where the current ruling party has lost the election. Ignorance or lack of civic knowledge can cause some voters to ignore the fact/not realise that their passivity is nevertheless sup...

Empirical research has repeatedly shown that an individual's confidence in false reports can be built when those reports confirm individuals own pre-existing attitudes, beliefs, or hypotheses. And when false reports confirm an individual's beliefs or attitudes, individual´s confidence in the false reports even grows. Therefore, according to experts, attitude, opinion or emotional homogeneity is proving to be the main driving force for the emergence, dissemination and even growth of any content in the media environment, disinformation content is no exception. Acceptance and credibility of disinformation on an individual and social level today appears to be a significant problem, especially in the area of social media, which are based on the idea of free and collective creation of content that is created by users. According to research, in the new media environment the most vulnerable group is young people, whose time on the Internet has increased most during Covid 19. The young generation uses social media for education or searching information and, increasingly, as a form of entertainment and relaxation. In all cases, a space opens up for young people to encounter even partially true, misleading or even false information. The paper presents the theoretical basis, which is followed by own research in the group of high school students (n = 40) and university students (n = 40). The aim of the research is to evaluate the mechanisms responsible for students' confidence in disinformation in the social media environment. Research confirms that the most important mechanisms in both research groups to stimulate students' confidence in disinformation during Covid 19 are: (1) homogeneity in knowledge; (2) homogeneity in beliefs; (3) homogeneity of identity; (4) homogeneity of the narrative; (5) social (collective) homogeneity.

The phenomenon of incompetence as an interdisciplinary subject requires multiple analyses embracing various spheres of life, and scientists whose knowledge is limited to only one discipline may face difficulties in capturing the core of the issue. This article is based on a meta-reflection inspired by the discourse revealed in post-humanist and post-pandemic reality. Its aim is to define sources of irrationality, areas of ignorance and, above all, levels of incompetence to reveal the primary categories. One of the problems standing in the way of development is a lack of interest, which leads to ignorance. A limited number of experiences and stimuli different from those in our everyday lives can lead us to a perception of the world solely from our own perspective. In the political sphere, cooperation between the authorities and specialists for the good of the community is crucial. The greed for power and money is fatal, causing numerous abuses, scientific knowledge becomes “inconveni...

This book is the outcome of an international project - inter-Generational European Memories (GEM) - implemented within the framework of the Grundtvig Partnership Project, which is a part of the European Lifelong Learning Programme. Six educational organizations took part in the project, from: Austria, France, Italy, Poland, Spain and Turkey. The project focused on the collection of memories of European seniors. The research framework of the GEM project was realized by using the biographical method. All partners of the project were involved in the implementation of research. It was therefore possible to collect biographies from six European countries. Referring to the idea of the project, the book is devoted to issues of aging, education of seniors and the meaning of memories for older people. The first chapter therefore focuses on the challenges of modern society, the importance of learning in the new reality and the place of seniors in society. The second chapter includes a collect...

Thesis. This paper aims to present the Intergenerational Bridge: Connect to Create project and its final results. The project enabled the collection of good practices, development of the set of activities, and structuring the knowledge regarding intergenerational learning (IGL) approach and its use with the groups of senior-aged (55+) and younger (16-30 years old) learners. Concept. In the frame of this project partners shared best practices in IGL approach, developed new ideas of IGL workshops, and implemented them in local communities. The Manual includes theoretical basics concerning intergenerational learning, two preparation workshops for educators that would like to know more about Intergenerational education, and 12 tried and tested intergenerational activities. Results and conclusion. During the course of the project, a toolkit of more than 80 pages was prepared in order to provide Adult educators with the knowledge and skills required to deliver their own workshops with the...

In the contemporary world, communication goes far beyond the well-known traditional written or spoken forms. For today's digital users, these have become insufficient, as using them, they cannot express their thoughts fully. The youth that has developed its own language, has become more hermetic, but not because it rejects other generations. The reason is the inability of older generations to understand the new ways of communication. Seniors find it challenging to learn how to use new technologies and stay up to date with trends. Although young people are able to understand them, the older generation cannot keep up with the news and stays excluded. The lack of mutual understanding results in weaker bonds. Once again, it is possible to observe ICT as a contemporary key competence essential for an adequate, mutually comprehensible exchange of messages. The best way to connect two generations in this aspect is informal education, especially one focusing on intergenerational activit...

This article aims to present the ways in which the ethics of authority, including government, is collapsing in the contemporary world. The authors demonstrate what consequences numerous abuses and negligence can bring to education and the future. The article is based on reflections supported by actual research, which confirms the theses contained in it. Not only consequences are highlighted, but also ways in which they can be prevented. The most important aspect for the progress of science and the prevention of the depreciation of states is to stand firm against the abuses and appropriations committed by authority figures and to fight against “skimpiness” both in everyday life as well as in science. The current world picture does not promise a happy future. Humanity should strive for greater openness without allowing itself to be subjected to authorities whose actions contradict what they really are.

The article tackles the problem of models of communication in science. The formal division of communication processes into oral and written does not resolve the problem of attitude. The author defines successful communication as a win-win game, based on the respect and equality of the partners, regardless of their position in the world of science. The core characteristics of the process of scientific communication are indicated , such as openness, fairness, support, and creation. The task of creating the right atmosphere for science communication belongs to moderators, who should not allow privilege and differentiation of position to affect scientific communication processes.

Resentment has a particular place in the University of the Third Age. Here, the activities of the organization come up against the developing personalities of the elderly and crises of personality, which intensify the phenomenon. Temporary resentment can in unfavourable circumstances escalate into permanent resentment, which is more difficult to alleviate. The task of the manager is to uncover this phenomenon at a relatively early stage, and to take appropriate preventative measures in the form of long-lasting negotiation of tasks and a suitable system of sharing rewards.

Studenci nie mają rozeznania w możliwościach i ograniczeniach karier naukowych. Zderzenie z twardą rzeczywistością akademicką, gdzie obowiązuje specyficzna kultura organizacyjna i ograniczone możliwości rozwojowe, stają się przyczyną pierwszych rozczarowań i rezygnacji.

This essay presents an interdisciplinary study of the role of the net society in education, and the appearance of a post-scientific culture in the Internet. However, the theory of a society rendered stupid by the Internet is one-sided and does not bear closer analysis. The appearance of incompetence and stupidity is only one of many behavioural traits of people using the Internet, and the net society, despite its specific nature, is in many ways similar to those functioning outside the Internet. Post-scientific culture need not be the only (or even the dominant) voice in the general Internet discussion. The creation of net societies which can perform the role of groups relating to a new scientific culture in the Internet have particular significance. A significant role can be played by new leaders and educated individuals who should be engaged in promoting a scientific culture. The Internet creates suitable conditions for transformative and emancipative learning, and it is only nece...

The term SELFIE was used for the first time in 2002. Ever since then, the word and selfie pictures entered permanently into both the popular culture and the daily behaviour. SELFIE has been the chosen "word of the year" by Oxford Dictionaries and its usage is constantly increasing at an astonishing rate of 17,000% yearly. Even though SELFIE is highly popular, there is surprisingly little research explaining this phenomenon. Few studies published within the last months explore the relationship between the respondents' personalities and the amount of selfie photos that they publish in the social media (see below). This issue appears to be interesting and begs further research questions. For the issue 2017_1, the person's personality is understood as a psychological construct. It is a collection of relatively permanent psychological features or dispositions that differentiate this individual from others and makes their behaviour coherent. Therefore, we especially encourage the use of tools for personality research such as NEO-Five Factor Inventory or Ten Item Personality Measure (TIPI) (a free-of-charge tool adapted to 18 languages, see: http:// gosling.psy.utexas.edu/scales-weve-developed/ten-item-personality-measure-tipi/). Of course, we do not restrict any research to the aforementioned instruments. We accept articles written on the basis of empirical research (in this case, especially correlative ones) that test particular personality traits (e.g. Big Five) in relation to the amount of created and posted online selfie photos. Research that replicates already existing outcomes (e.g. in a different country) is also welcomed. All articles will be subject to a double-blind review involving two independent reviewers. Works that receive negative reviews will not be published in the periodical.

The Polish university is based on the Humboldt model, and can serve as a typical example of liberal education throughout Central and Eastern Europe. This monograph portrays an institution resistant to change and defying all attempts at reform. Currently it is an institution attempting to retain its identity with no regard to the rapidly changing world of science, culture and communication technologies around it. The absolute power of the professor, excessive administration and feudal subordination mean that such a university has lost touch with the local environment and has become a factory for graduates with a random education. Power games and resentment have replaced the search for scientific truth, which in turn means that such an institution is practically invisible in the rankings, because of its lack of significant achievements. This situation has led the author to propose a redefinition of the function of the university, based on a thorough analysis of needs of all its various groups of stakeholders

Rola federacji UTW w kształtowaniu polityki senioralnej The role of the Federation of U3As in policies for the elderly Polish version 1. Polityka centrum i polityka partycypacyjna. Znaczenie organizacji parasolowych. Federacja to stowarzyszenie stowarzyszeń. Głos federacji jest o wiele silniejszy w ciałach przedstawicielskich niż stanowisko pojedynczej organizacji. Organizacje parasolowe desygnują przedstawicieli do rad i gron eksperckich. 2. Polityka senioralna w społeczeństwie wiedzy to połączenie wiedzy specjalistów, uczonych, praktyków, decydentów. Konieczna jest współpraca świata nauki, praktyki i polityki. Konferencja robocza staje się wtedy odpowiednim narzędziem kształtowania rekomendacji i polityk.

Publish in Journal of Education, Culture and Society and win a grant for 800 USD to participate in an international conference!

The special issue of the Journal of Education, Culture and Society, expected to be published in June 2019, will be dedicated to the very actual, yet poorly explored, topic of the usage of emoticons in relation to personality. Emoticons, as nonverbal cues in computer-mediated communication, have been shown to express emotions1 and affect the online message interpretations2, but very few studies have focused on their relation to personality.

In the present times of technological explosion, education has a unique role.  Higher education in particular has a special place because universities possess much more autonomy and can implement reforms with greater ease. What should we consider from wide perspective in terms of needed reforms? How to facilitate teaching-learning in an environment overloaded with dynamic knowledge? Which factors play a crucial role in higher education with changing approach to knowledge because of the wide extent of information technology? What is knowledge nowadays and how higher education should answer to a growing need of change?

In this book we are willing to give an overview of the directions that can be used by teachers, students and the whole society connected to higher education. It is the need of the hour that we share perspectives from different areas of research and countries to get to know the possible opportunities and limitations in education. Responsibility for proceeding smartly with that change is significant, because it affects career choices, health of our students and the usability of teaching-learning process.
