Alcoholic Beverage, Feasts, and Rituals: For the Practice of Ritual and Feast Archaeology in Korean Prehistory2022 •
In order to activate ritual researches in Korean prehistoric archaeology, this paper reviewed the existing ritual-related discussions and looked at the social functions and meanings of feasts, which have not received so much attention in the meantime, in connection with archaeological materials. Feasts are a strategic behavior performed for the main purpose of confirming the identity of groups and securing solidarity, acquiring, maintaining, and strengthening socio-political power by hosts who held those feasts. Essential parts of the feasts are the hospitality, and among others alcoholic beverage is an indispensable drink in the feasts. In this paper, after reviewing in detail the cases in China where the existence of alcohol was confirmed through archaeo-scientific analysis, theoretical discussions on rituals and feasts and critical review of ritual-related studies in Korea were conducted. After that, I briefly reviewed the archaeological data that can be interpreted in relation t...

A Study of Premodern Korean and Classical Chinese Poetry in the Webtoon Kadamhangsŏl2019 •
This study examines the use of premodern Korean and classical Chinese Poetry in the Korean webtoon Kadamhangsŏl (Alleyway Rumors) and their significance. It first observes the role literature and language play in its world, and then dives into the significance of Kadamhangsŏl by examining specific examples of the poetry used in this piece. Premodern Korean and classical Chinese Poetry is an integral element of the series’ world, where language and literature, the oral and written word, carry significance weight. Brief and refined language has the power to change one’s state, while the ability to create and comprehend text is linked to carving seals and creating defenses. Thus, these abilities end up in deciding the power of the series’ characters. The use of premodern Korean and classical Chinese poetry can be divided into three categories: first, poetry is used as examples of refined language imbued with powerful magic. Poems and verses are quoted based on the ‘desires’ of the speakers in the texts, with their concise and metaphorical style carrying great power. Second, these texts are used as plot devices, with the quoted examples often representing the characters’ mindsets or character development by expanding the scope of their meaning. Third, the texts are used to show the power and role language and literature play in the setting and theme of the series. The use of classical literature by the series is significant due to the following: first, the quoted texts are deeply tied to the basic premise of the ‘power of language and literature’. Second, it uses them effectively by quoting texts widely taught in school curricula. It does not change the texts nor make wild interpretations of them, using them according to the context to strenghthen the series’ plot and themes. As a piece of popular art, Kadamhangsŏl is an interesting example of using classical content. This study’s analysis presents new possibilities for such content, while also demonstrating how classical content can raise the quality and distinctiveness of popular art.

Iconography of Ban Jieyu(班婕妤)2009 •
The Palace Lady Ban Jieyu was daughter of Ban Kuang (班況), and a grandfather's sister of Ban Gu (班固 32-92), who wrote "The Book of Late Han (後漢書)". She has the episode with emperor Cheng (漢成帝, reg. B.C. 32-7), in which once emperor Cheng stayed in a sedan chair which was carried by four bearer. Emperor let Lady Ban Jieyu be riding together on the sedan chair. After she mentioned about the last emperor of Xia(夏), Yin(殷), Zhu(周, B.C. 1046-771), who took theirs concubine instead of faithful retainer in it, excused. And she asked him how could it be thought about them in history, if she is getting together him on the sedan chair. In this article, I make an attempt the Panofsky's iconographic theory to apply for analysis of the Eastern Painting. Three works of which are emerged the abovementioned episode of Ban Jieyu as I found - Admonitions of the Court Instructress to Palace Ladies The Story of Ban Jieyu in Sima Jinlong tomb 司馬金龍墓 and the episode of Jieyu refused to sit in the same sedan chair (with the emperor Cheng) 婕妤辭輦 in the Painting about the three basic principles in human relations 三綱行實圖. They consist of one emperor in the sedan chair and one palace lady, which are accordingly getting out a general rule to depict of this motif in each painting. Furthermore, it makes iconographic meaning "Emperor Cheng and Ban Jieyu" which will be made "Iconography of Ban Jieyu". Also it will be made the allegory of Ban Jieyu, with that can be easy to understand and interpret another artworks in same motif.
