The history of puppetry is full of supernatural bodies on stage that dramatically or subtextually represent their quest of coming to life and gaining autonomy from their masters. A puppet’s performance often reflects on its condition of existence: How does a random object become an animated body on stage? This practical and theoretical question energizes South Korean artist Geumhyung Jeong’s (b. 1980) body of work. Jeong extends the possibilities of puppetry by choreographing her entire body as her animation technique. Moreover, she explores the various dimensions of the object’s liveliness by way of sexuality. In fact, in Jeong’s exploration of animacy, this stage life of the object always already involves intimacy and sensuality. She crafts and manipulates her performing objects that range from simple masks to dummies to machines, embraced carnally with them in the double entendre of playing with control. Reflecting on the six performances Jeong created between 2008 and 2019, I am repeatedly reminded that there is no anima, no life, and no agency for objects devoid of sexual being.

기본적으로 우리가 미술을 하는 이유는 자유롭고자 함이고, 미술계의 근원 동력 또한 독립적이고 자율적이며 창조적인 사고와 행위에 있다. 그런 만큼 지금 여기 어느 미술인이, 어떤 동기와 목적 아래 활동을 하고, 어떻게 생각하고 행동하는지에 대해 타인이 왈가왈부할 수 없다. 게다가 이 영역의 특성상 절대적으로 옳은 기준이나, 객관적으로 명석 판명한 가치판단, 보편적으로 동의할 도덕과 윤리라는 것도 설정하기 어렵다. 그러니 개인적 차원에서든 한국 사회 내 ‘미술계’라는 집단으로서든 무엇을 원하고, 말하고, 행하고, 외부에 내보이고, 스스로를 정립할 것인지는 결정 불가능에 가까운 일인지 모른다. 극단적인 예로, 어떤 작가가 작품을 팔아 큰 부를 축적했는데 더 악착 같이 사적 이해득실에 몰두한다 해서 누구도 나무랄 수 없다. 한국미술 전체의 현재와 미래를 고려할 때 정말 올바르고 능력 있으며 그릇이 큰 인사가 필요한 자리에 악성 루머가 무성하고 일부에서는 패권 다툼이 일어난다 한들, 그래서 대외적으로 한국 미술계의 질적 수준과 구성원의 가치가 의심받는다 한들 막을 도리도 명시적 근거도 없다.

The Korean artist Yun Hyong-keun (1928 – 2007) made works that do and do not look like the Western abstract paintings that now belong firmly within the canon of modern art. Seeking to locate them within a ‘grand narrative’ – however globalised -  is fraught with difficulties. I argue that while it is important to recognise both the local cultural influences informing Yun’s practice and their debt to Western art, to describe his paintings within the discourse of ‘hybridity’ is to fail to recognize how visual art works such as Yun’s resist discursive analysis. I apply the cognitive blending theory of Gilles Fauconnier and Mark Turner, arguing that Yun’s paintings, like many other postcolonial art works, can more fruitfully be understood as ‘blended emergent structures’.

전시명 《유령의 발걸음(phantom footsteps)》을 의역한 ‘유령 같은 과정’이라는 말을 통해서 내가 의미부여하고자 하는 것은 양 갈래다. 하나는, 작가가 애초 이 전시 제목에 부여한 의미대로 작품들은 “유령이 남긴 발자국처럼, 실체가 아닌 것들이 실체를 구현해내는 역설적인 현상을 은유”하며, 여기서 “‘판톰’은 삶과 사회를 지배하고 조종하는 모종의 욕망과 환영들을 총체적으로 지시”한다는 얘기다. 그러나 다른 갈래는, 그 말이 특정 작품이나 전시 대신 함경아 작업 전반을 정의하는 뜻으로 쓰이는 것이다. 이때 내가 의도하는 ‘판톰’은 ‘실체 없음’, ‘본질적이지 않음’, ‘현실화가 불가능함’ 같은 부정적 함의를 갖지 않는다. 오히려 함경아의 미술이 매번 그러나 지속해서 새로운 주제, 질료, 개념, 형식, 매체, 방법론, 표현 기교를 탐색해왔다는 의미다. 여하한 경우에도 외관만 그럴듯한 아트 오브제로 대충 귀결되지 않고, 기계적인 시스템이나 일상의 상투적인 언사 등과도 쉽게 절충하지 않으면서 말이다. 그러니까 ‘유령 같은 과정’은 그 탐색의 역학, 진행 경로, 질적 속성이 고답적이지 않고, 일종의 유령처럼 존재와 비존재 사이를 항상적으로 횡단함을 지시한다. 동시에 그런 모호성, 불확실성, 미결정성, 불안정성의 작업 과정이 야기하는 두려움 또는 어려움에도 불구하고, 함경아의 미술이 바로 그 횡단의 역학을 기꺼이 감내하는 정주 불가능한 창작을 본질로 한다는 뜻이다. 이 작가의 전시나 작품 제목에 유독 ‘서치(such)’, ‘썸(some)’ 같은 단어가 빈번히 키워드로 설정된 사실에 주목할 이유가 여기 있다. 즉 영어 구문에서 한정사이자 대명사의 역할을 하는 그 단어들이 다소 광범위하고 불분명하고 애매하게 대상을 규정하고 지시한다면, 함경아는 그런 언어적 감각을 작업 과정 및 작품을 통해 현실화해온 것이다.

This essay explores Kang Kukjin’s early experiments with both sculptures and installation art. Although there have been numerous critical studies of the artist, only a few monographs have been published since his death. To reevaluate his early works, this paper examines the artistic formation of “Nonggol” in which six young and emerging artists of the 1960s participated. Although their works still represented the spirits of Informel abstract idioms, their manifestos and critical writings nevertheless are noteworthy. The next chapter looks at Kang’s participation in the “New Exhibition Group” and the formation of “the Union Exhibition of Korean Young Artists” in December of 1967. The last chapter examines the very indeterminacy of the sculptural language of his works in his first exhibition which took place at the Myungdong Gallery in 1973. Analyzing contemporary primary sources and material culture, this paper discusses Kang’s short-lived experiments in early sculptures and the formation of
collective artistic groups.

I first present an abbreviated overview of the exhibition Unflattening which was recently at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul. My interest in this essay is primarily on the sections of the exhibition that involves Korean contemporary artists responding to the legacy of Korean War, but I extend this remit to consider some more general issues concerning contemporary art and war.  I consider war as a paradigm of cognitive ‘flattening’, and ask how images and image-word hybrids can help us perceive war in general from a less ‘flattened’ vantage point. I make a short detour into historiography and art history in order to discuss representations of war and how they reflect historical consciousness. I discuss the genre of ‘History painting’, and extend its meaning to include all art that engages with recent historical events, including war.  I then return to the exhibition at the MMCA to consider how the works by the contemporary Korean artists can aid understanding of the Korean War. I argue that inevitably an exhibition about the Korean War in the Republic of Korea today is hobbled by the fact that the conflict continues, albeit it at a now diffuse level. I also argue that the stylistic conventions of contemporary art in general can prove problematic when dealing with an event as traumatic as war, especially in its contemporary manifestations.

존재들은 이미 항상 종속관계나 내포관계로 묶기에 불가능한 위치에서 나와 관계한다. 또 제아무리 ‘가깝게 느껴지더라도 어떤 먼 것의 일회적 나타남’ 같은 지각의 거리를 요구한다. 나는 이 두 사안에 미학적 이름을 부여하고 싶다. 앞선 것이 레비나스(E. Levinas)의 외재성(exteriority) 개념을 참조해 ‘바깥에 있기’라 칭한다면, 후자는 벤야민(W. Benjamin)의 아우라(Aura) 개념을 원용해 ‘아우라적 거리’라는 명명이 가능할 것이다. 이 둘은 이하에서 논할 작가 조덕현의 미술에서 내가 부각시키고자 하는 예술적이고 인문적인 특질이 갖춰지기 위한 주요 요소다. 혹은 그의 창작방식 전반을 조망하건대, 조형적으로 탁월해지고 비평의 사유와 담론을 촉발시키는 힘을 가진 잠재성의 조건이다.

양정욱은 거대하면서도 섬세하고, 기계적이면서도 서사적이고, 신비하면서도 세속적이고, 구조적이면서도 시적인 미술을 한다. 이 작가의 작품은 말 그대로 질료를 갈고 닦아 만든 조각, 특정한 공간과 시간을 조건으로 한 설치미술이다. 동시에 그것은 간단한 동력장치가 수없이 많고 다양한 부속장치를 작동시키는 큰 기계, 빛과 그림자와 소리와 움직임이 어우러진 연극, 시각이미지로 직조된(텍스트의 어원 ‘textum’이 지시하듯이) 문학이다. 아니, 보다 정확히 말하면 양정욱의 미술은 이 모든 속성과 형식을 동시에, 한꺼번에 가진 복합체이자 다면체라고 해야 옳다. 싱겁게 들리겠지만, 그의 작품 하나하나가 그 같은 미학적 속성을 종합하고 있고, 그런 점에서 그의 작업을 어떤 특정 예술 양식이나 장르로 한정하는 것은 적절하지 않기 때문이다.

Sometimes a personal story is more effective in delivering a snapshot of history. Many artists in this exhibition Postmodernism and the Aesthetics: Collide or Steer? are my contemporaries, who, like myself, lived through the 1990s studying at an institution of higher education and visual arts. What I remember vividly during this time is a newspaper advertisement for Michel Foucault. On the subway trains, people were assiduously reading newspapers as cell phones were not emergent yet. A college friend of mine used to carry a huge Motorola mobile phone which originally belonged to his father. People were still reading many books and would gather at a book store, larger or small near campus, to wait for friends or to read new books. By riding the subway, one could easily see large book advertisements on the lower half of the newspaper—usually below a section of art and culture. While Foucault’s books were often introduced in the newspaper, either as advertisement or as news articles, students at college did not yet study postmodernism. It was something too trendy and too contemporaneous, as of yet. At my own college, students took courses on philosophy or aesthetics by reading Kant, Hegel, Merleau-Ponty, or sometimes Jurgen Habermas. However, I saw graduate students or those about to graduate reading and discussing Deleuze or Barthes. Some would go to see Minjung art exhibitions in Insa-dong, but never discussed these artists in class. It was in 1991 when a university student named Kang Kyeong Dae was brutally killed at the hands of the police (1991).

‘미적 경향의 양극화’ 문제를 젊은 미술가들에 한정하지 않고 한국현대미술 전반이라는 큰 틀에 맞추면 무엇이 보이는가? 막대한 물량공세로만 구현 가능한 스펙터클 미술 기획안, 시쳇말로 ‘몰빵’에 가까운 ‘선택과 집중’ 정책을 통해 발탁한 스타 아티스트, 그/녀에게만 몰리는 재정 지원과 미술제도적 후원, 그런 거대자본과 시스템을 통해서만 획득 가능한 문화예술지식 및 현장경력에 독점적 지위 부여, 그것을 우월하고 유효한 것으로 가공해줄 수 있는 미술계 내부 전문가의 영향력 행사. 이렇게 다양한 성부(聲部)의 여러 박자가 긴밀하게 울려 퍼지면서 한국 미술계의 소위 ‘상위 1%(객관적 통계가 없으니 양극화를 표상하는 사회적 수치를 빌리면) 컨템포러리 아트’가 만들어지는 과정이 보인다. 이는 짧게는 최근 몇 년, 길게는 십여 년 사이에 만들어진 현상이다. 또 국립현대미술관, 아르코, 리움, 에르메스 코리아, 양현재단, 일우재단, 국제갤러리, 갤러리 현대, 아라리오, SBS, CJ, 현대자동차, 하이트 등을 통해 이뤄진 각종 미술 사업, 즉 전시, 컬렉션, 상, 오디션, 국제교류, 작품 위촉, 출판, 국제비엔날레와 레지던시, 국제미술시장에서의 판매, 경매, 프로모션, 협업 사례에 등재된 소수의 작가/심사자/결정권자 이름과 그들의 작품/프로젝트를 검토하는 것으로 충분히 확인 가능한 사실이다. 말하자면 그 이름들과 사업들이 한국현대미술의 우세종이다.
  그런데 위의 장면과는 반대로 보이는, 그러나 분명 동시대의 조건 속에서 동시대 미술의 일부로 공존하고 있는 미술 종이 있다.

What I intend to put forward using this phrase, which is a paraphrase of the exhibition title, “Phantom Footsteps” are two points.The first is that, as the artist intended in the first place, works of art are “metaphoric of the paradoxical mechanism through which what is not substantial embodies what is substantial, like the footsteps left by a phantom,” and here “the ‘phantom’ is a general term that refers to those desires and illusions that govern and control life and society.”; the other point is that the phase can be used to define the entire body of Ham’s works, not her particular work or exhibition. What I aim to convey with the word “phantom” is not negative as in “non-substantial,” “non-essential,” or “impossible to realize”. Rather, I want to emphasize that for each and every work Ham has explored what is new in terms of theme, material, idea, form, medium, methodology, and technique. Under all circumstances, her work has not boiled down to an art object only whose appearance is art-like and has been reduced to neither a mere mechanical system nor everyday cliché. Thus, “phantom process” points to the fact that the dynamics, passage, and qualitative attributes of her exploration are not transcendent but instead constantly cross between being and non-being, like a phantom. At the same time, it addresses that the very nature of Ham’s art is rooted in the unfixed process that readily endures the dynamics of change in spite of the fear or difficulty that is destined to be caused by her art-making process of such ambiguity, uncertainty, and inderterminacy. This is also why one needs to pay attention to the noticeably frequent use of words like “such” and “some” in her titles of both her works and exhibitions. As a determiner and pronoun, these words are used for rather extensive, unclear, and vague reference, and Ham has been realizing this linguistic sense through her art-making process and works.

과연 현재 이슈 속의 ‘청년작가들’은 기성세대 미술을 낡고 진부한 것으로 격하시켜버릴 만한 어떤 전위적이거나 혁신적인 작품을 보유하고 있는가? 혹은 상상컨대 국가가 국립현대미술관 서울관에 청년관을 어느 날 떡하니 개설해주면 당당히 거기 들어갈, 그간 자신들의 은밀한 그룹 안에서 비아냥거렸던 기성작가들의 미술을 부끄럽게 할 만한, 독자적인 예술 실험을 하고 있는 중인가? 혹시 선배가 제시해준 ‘국립현대미술관 서울관의 청년관 신설’이라는 이슈를 복창하면서 정작 미술은 손 놓고 있지 않은가? 이를테면 이 형국은 아들(딸, 청년, 청춘, 젊은, 신진 등 그 지시어가 무엇이든)이 자신의 의지 대신 아버지(어머니, 중년, 노년, 늙은, 중견, 원로, 기득권 등등)의 욕망에 이끌려 아버지의 목을 치는 체 하면서 아버지의 사랑 받는 옆자리에 앉고 싶어 하는 것과 크게 다르지 않다(노파심에서 부연하건대, 여기서 아버지는 라캉의 ‘대타자’ 혹은 알튀세르의 ‘이데올로기적 국가장치’ 개념과 같다). 현재 한국 미술계에서 미술의 새로운 주체가 되고자 하는 이들은 사회에서 말하는 의미의 잉여가 전혀 아니다. 그런 자기 욕망의 당사자 말고, 정작 발화도, 행동도, 무엇보다 세대 너머 체재를 전복할만한 야심 찬 작업도 직접 수행하지 못한 채 이슈로 서로를 묶는 이들이 잉여 상태에 빠져 보인다. 게다가 그런 이들은 정작 자신이 속한 세대의 대다수 구성원들과 공감 및 연대는 고사하고 말하자면 스스로를/그들을 ‘왕따’ 시킴으로써 세대교체의 동력조차 없애버린 것 같다.

작가 자신은 지난 5~6년 동안 쭉 마치 하나의 장르나 매체로는 할 말을 다 못한다는 듯이 여기저기로 정신 분산하는(distract) 시각예술작업을 이어오고 있다. 설치 ․ 조각 ․ 영상 ․ 사운드 ․ 공연예술 등 다양한 경계를 넘어 여러 가지 물질이, 환경이, 장치가, 언어가, 생각과 감각이, 기교 및 기술이 혼성 난무하는 미술을 말이다. 마치 스스로 재능을 “탈진”시켜야 직성이 풀리겠다는 듯이(비난하는 말이 아니라 들뢰즈가 피츠제럴드의 1936년 소설 『균열(The Crack Up)』의 주인공들에 대해 했던 말과 같은 뜻으로). 물론 작가가 고의로 자신의 예술 재능을 탈진시킬 리야 만무하니, 최수정이 원하는 바가 다른 데 있음은 분명하다. 그리고 내가 이런 논점을 제기하는 의도 또한 그녀 작업에 대한 부정적 판결에 있지 않음은 굳이 언급할 필요가 없다. 오히려 목적은 이를테면 회화 단독으로도 그렇게 높은 성공 포인트를 취할 수 있는데 ‘그럼에도 불구하고’ 작가 최수정은 왜 다양한 것들과 이질적인 것들이 이합집산과 합종연횡을 거듭하는 정신 분산적 작업을 지속하고 있는가를 밝히는 것이다. 더 정확히는 그녀가 자기 작업에 관한 한 수다를 멈출 수 없는 것처럼, 앞서 말한 정신 분산적 창작 욕동에 이끌려 만들어내는 예술의 과정과 결과를 분석해보는 데 있다.

A two-day workshop on modern Korean art intended to expand the constituent audience for this exciting field beyond specialists in Korea. The social, historical and political situation of Korea makes Korean art a particularly rich node through which to consider the relationship between visual experience and modernity. Featuring scholars from various backgrounds discussing articles-in-progress, this workshop explores a range of artworks produced by Korean artists from the mid-18th century to the present.

내게 김은형 미술의 미학적 속성을 정의할 비평 과제가 주어져 있다면, 다음과 같이 답할 수 있다. 첫째, 조형예술에서 장면(scenes)을 만들어내기. 둘째, 시간을 공간으로 형질변경하고, 육체의 퍼포먼스를 표상의 각인(inscription)으로 재탄생시키기. 이렇게 단언할 수 있는 근거는 무엇인가? 앞서 언급한 기간 동안 김은형이 강하게 영향을 받았고, 자기 작품의 원천으로 삼았으며, 나아가 그로부터 독자적인 미술을 구축할 수 있었던 것이 ‘음악’, 그중에서도 모데스트 무소르그스키(Modest Petrowitsch Mussorgsky)의 교향곡 <전람회의 그림>이나 리하르트 바그너(Richard Wagner)의 오페라 <니벨룽의 반지>라는 사실이 우선 그 근거다. 다음, 그 고전음악으로부터의 영향과 그에 대한 몰두 및 탐구가 김은형의 미술에서는 무조건적인 모방이나 일차원적 묘사/재현이 아니라, 조형적 구성과 기교를 바탕으로 음악의 형식과 요소를 새롭게 번역/변이/변형하는 개별적 차원으로 발전했다는 점이 근거다. 요컨대 뉴욕에 체류 중이던 2008년경부터 김은형은 클래식 음악 및 오페라에 빠져들게 되는데, 그 과정에서 이 작가의 태도는 미술 내적 규범의 수용에서 음악으로의 감각적 확장으로 전환된다. 또 동양의 전통에 입각한 회화원리에 얽매이지 않고 서구의 신화, 서사, 스토리, 다원적인 예술 실험이 혼합된 공연예술로 관심을 넓히고, 점차 전자보다 후자를 자기 미술의 더 크고 비중 있는 자리에 두게 된다. 그렇게 해서 김은형의 미술이 거두게 된 성과는 좀 전에 밝혔듯이 조형예술작품이 장면을 갖게 되었다는 점(그러나 이때 장면은 오페라극의 장이나 막, 연극이나 영화의 신과 동일하지 않다. 말인즉슨 공간예술이 시간적 속성을 내포하게 되었다는 뜻이다)이며, 연주자/공연자의 신체 퍼포먼스가 드로잉-회화-조각-설치의 시각언어로 형질 변경돼 표상되었다는 점이다.

첫째는 최운형이 2015년에서 2016년 초까지 작업한 그림들이 말 그대로 자르고, 가르고, 절개하고, 떼어 내고, 뽑아내고, 붙이고, 꿰매고, 봉합하는 식의 제작 행위/표현 기법을 통해 완성되었다는 사실이다. 이 말의 좀 더 정확한 뜻은 그런 행위나 기법을 사용해 특정 내용을 암시하는 작품을 만들었다는 것이 아니라, 그 행위 자체가 곧 최운형 회화의 미적 형식이자 질(quality)이라는 것이다. 둘째, 그 같은 동사들을 활용해 설명해야 할 이 작가의 작품들은 미학적으로 볼 때 아방가르드 예술운동의 전략과 계보학적으로 연결될 수 있다. 기존의 관습에 저항하며 새로운 것을 시도하는 전위적인 작가들의 예술실험, 즉 반미학(anti-aesthetics) 과/또는 반미술(anti-art) 행위 말이다.

강홍구는 이를테면 내가 생각하는 한국 현대미술계의 탁월한 ‘예술가-포정’ 중 하나다. 이 작가만큼 신물 나는 일상 현실로부터 ―아니 사실은 절대적으로 바로 그것으로부터만― 비범하면서도 결코 젠 체 하지 않는 이미지를 떠내는 이가 없다는 뜻에서다. 또한 이 작가만큼 겉보기에 힘들이지 않고, 대단한 각오나 철두철미 심각함도 자랑하지 않으면서 날것의 현실로부터 즐거운 것, 기분 좋은 것, 감상할만한 것 그러나 송곳 같은 의표가 있고 영양가 높은 비판성이 담긴 무엇을 발라내기 어렵다는 뜻에서다. 요컨대, 작가가 말하는 “시시한 것”으로부터 미학적 용어로 ‘미적인/감각 지각적인 것(the aesthetic/aisthetikos)’ 각뜨기.

The exhibition of contemporary art STATION PARADOX is a dialogue between artists from South Korea and from Berlin working with painting, video art, installation, and performance. As the title suggests, cultural dialogue can often highlight the paradoxes inherent to questions of identity and shifting perspectives. The artists selected for this exhibition, each in their own way, push the boundaries of the expected: from Claudia Chaseling’s spatial paintings spilling out of the canvas and exploding off the gallery walls; to the transfigurative paintings of Milovan Destil Markovic, translating a digital language onto his canvases; the hyperrealist calligraphic ink painting of Jang Jaerok; the meditative emotional journeys of Jihye Park’s and David Krippendorff’s films; the socially conscious videos of Kira Kim and Hyungkyu Kim; the zany performances of Zinu Kim; the digital animations of Hye Rim Lee; and aaajiao’s interrogation of our post-internet culture. The works in this exhibition push the limits of their form, highlighting the paradoxes in how we perceive the world through the shifting perspectives of cultural landscapes mediated through technologies of viewing. Nothing here is quite what it seems.

The exhibition is accompanied by a dual language (English/Korean) catalogue. By way of this exhibition, MOMENTUM is proud to show works by three artists never before seen in Berlin – Jang Jaerok, Hyungkyu Kim, and Jihye Park – and to welcome four new artists and their works to the MOMENTUM Collection – aaajiao, Claudia Chaseling, David Krippendorff, and Milovan Destil Marković.

나는 최근 십여 년 사이 젊은 미술인들 중심으로 이런 현실에 근거한 새로운 미적 경향이 나타난 사실에 주목한다. 일상의 잡다한 유류품들/누군가 버리거나 여기저기 방치된 물건들 혹은 초저가로 유통되는 생활용품들을 대략 1평반에서 2평정도 공간에 쌓고 조립하고 펼쳐놓고 매만지고 전시하는 미술이 그것이다. 이름 붙이자면 ‘2000년대 한국적 삶의 정크아트’(문득 보들레르의 ‘현대적 삶의 화가’가 떠오르지만 그리 낭만적이지는 않)다. 거기서는 마치 고시원 방 한 칸의 내부처럼 궁핍하지만 성실하고 묘한 애정과 자기비애로 쌓아올린 사물들-미술의 절박함과 겨우 얻는 안락함이 동시에 느껴진다. 그에 대해서는 아서 단토가 뒤샹의 <병걸이>나 워홀의 <브릴로 박스> 미술을 두고 “일상적 존재의 생활세계에 속하는 대상 (...) 예술작품으로 변화시키는 미묘한 기적”이라 미학적으로 논변한 내용을 결코 반복할 수 없다. 예술지상주의와 고급미술 내적 논리를 반대 항으로 삼아 레디메이드미술과 팝아트 이후의 예술을 승인하는 그런 미학으로는 현재 한국 젊은 작가들의 정크아트를 비평할 수 없다는 뜻이다. 단토가 일상용품의 미적 변용과 슈퍼마켓 상품이 작품으로 승격되는 기적의 미술을 말할 수 있었다면, 지금 여기 우리는 생계가 다급한 작가들의 생활밀착형 변용과 자력 구원/위안으로서 가성비 미술을 논해야만 하는 것이다.

This article examines a series of video works by Okin Collective, a group of three Korean artists (Jin Shiu, Kim Hwayong, and Yi Joungmin) who have over the past few years been productively concerned with an array of political, social, and cultural issues from both local and global perspectives. Such issues include the process of urban redevelopment in Seoul, the global environmental crisis, utopian aspirations in the neoliberal economy, and the Korean authorities' ideological control of citizenship. The collective's imperative to engender sensory and affective engagement with these issues has led them to produce several video works derived from their open-form performances. I argue that the videos can be read as projects that foreground and explore an array of interrelated ideas or issues revolving around collectivity. Taking individuals' performative acts as their nodal point, the videos demonstrate open forms that are produced through and resonate with these individuals' collective participation. Presenting both the catastrophic situation of contemporary society and utopian aspirations, the videos present the “space of the common” that is made by participants' performative practices. These performances produce a common affective understanding of the present and a shared envisioning of the future as the overlapping temporalities of collectivity.
