École de Paris

« Septembre 1944. […] Mais c’est l’art des invasions barbares  » ! Ainsi s’exprime Waldemar-George (1893-1970) à son retour à Paris, après deux ans de vie clandestine. Dans l’immédiat après-guerre, Waldemar-George, qui avait été naguère le promoteur de l’École de Paris, n’a pas renoncé aux valeurs du Néo-Humanisme dont il a été le fondateur vingt ans plus tôt. Ce mouvement, qui fait de l’homme la mesure de toutes choses en art, a beaucoup souffert de sa proximité avec les sympathies fascistes de son théoricien. En 1946, curieux malentendu : c’est à Waldemar-George que l’on demande un texte pour une exposition sur l’art des « malades mentaux » présentée à l’hôpital Sainte-Anne. Le critique d’art persiste et signe : « L’art des fous sera-t-il l’ultima ratio des élites corrompues par l’abus des alcools spirituels et intellectuels ? » Pourtant, petit à petit, Waldemar-George, ennemi de l’abstraction comme de toute figuration déformante, finira par trouver dans la figuration quasi abstraite de peintres tels que Jorn ou Pignon, puis, à la fin des années 1950, dans la tendance informelle ou tachiste de l’avant-garde parisienne, une forme d’expression acceptable pour son inlassable quête de l’homme en art.

Cette anthologie analytique a été élaborée dans la continuité de la thèse de doctorat à partir d’une sélection de 1660 textes écrits par le théoricien de l’Art corporel, sociologique et critique, François Pluchart, fondateur des revues "arTitudes" (1971-72), "arTitudes international" (1975-77) et "L’Art vivant" (1984-85).

In 1925 André Warnod declared in the daily Comœdia that: “The École de Paris exists. Later art historians will be able […] to define its character and study its makeup but we can still today affirm […] its power of attraction which brings to us artists from around the world.” As Warnod then set forth, the École de Paris denoted a loosely affiliated network of independent artists, both French and foreign-born, whose collective talents offered an alternative and preferred ‘School’ to the obsolete academic model. More remarkably, he insisted upon the contribution artists born outside France working in Paris made to the “prodigious richness” of contemporary French art. As a label, the École de Paris soon narrowed in contemporary writing to distinguish the work of foreign artists vis-à-vis that of French counterparts; at the most conservative, reactionary end of the critical spectrum it signified all that was the antithesis of and a threat to true French tradition (the École française). Yet the École de Paris never entirely lost its impetus as a means of laying claim to foreign artists whose art and success was perceived to reflect, first and foremost, the city in which they had chosen to live and work. This was to become all the more apparent during the 1930s when, having lost momentum as a critical term indicating a practising group of artists, the École de Paris developed as an art-historical and museological category in which national origins were subordinated to the project of identifying Paris as the locus of modern art. Did the École de Paris exist as Warnod (or later others) described it? His epithet has proved both enduring and yet amorphous, but my purpose is not to attempt to establish a definitive body of artists, united along ethnic, national or even stylistic lines. Of more interest here are the competing definitions which the term itself provoked, as evidence of the changing reception afforded to foreign artists practising in Paris between the wars.

In 1978, the Swiss art collector, Dr. Oscar Ghez, donated his important collection of works of art by artists who perished in the Holocaust to the University of Haifa. Consisting of oil paintings, watercolors, drawings and sculptures, the collection includes over 130 works by 18 artists who lived and worked in Paris before the Holocaust in the Ecole de Paris. Arrested by the Nazis and their French collaborators, many of these artists were interned in the transit camps of Drancy, Gurs, Compiègne before being deported East to death camps. Ghez conceived of the collection as a memorial to artists who perished in the Holocaust, but it is also an important record of their lives and creativity. Naum Aronson, Georges Ascher, Abraham Berline, Jacques Cytrynovitch, Alexandre Fasini, Adolphe Feder, Nathan Grunsweigh, Jacques Gotko, Karl Tobias Haber, Joseph Hecht, Henri Epstein, Moise Kogan, Max Jacob, Georges Kars, Nathalie Kraemer, Roman Kramsztyk, Joachim Weingarten, Leon Weissberg.

L’analyse consacrée à la diffusion et réception critique de l’œuvre de Chana Orloff aux États-Unis entre 1929 et 1947 aspire à démonter un avant et un après – le déplacement du centre artistique mondial de Paris à New York – et le chemin qu’emprunta cette artiste pluridisciplinaire afin de considérer sa place en tant que telle, le déploiement de sa carrière aux États-Unis et particulièrement, l’accueil critique qui lui fut concédé. À travers cette critique d’art, l’importance de la culture française aux États-Unis, dans la première partie du XXe siècle, se fait jour. D’une part, des artistes, des architectes, des écrivains et des mécènes américains vinrent à Paris dans la première moitié du siècle. D’autre part, en se rendant outre-Atlantique dès l’entre-deux-guerres, Chana Orloff ne fut pas une singularité. Elle comprit l’intérêt de s’allier aux Américains, qui Juifs pour la plupart, étaient pétris de culture européenne et désireux de resserrer les relations franco-américaines. En exposant à l’étranger, Chana Orloff représenta en quelque sorte l’État français aux États-Unis.

In 1951, Hersh Fenster published Undzere farpainikte kinstler (Our Martyred Artists), a 300-page yizkor book in Yiddish that commemorated 84 Jewish artists who had worked in France in the interwar period and perished in the Holocaust. Unlike most memorial books, which are collaborative group endeavors sponsored by landsmanschaften groups or communal organizations, this volume was researched, written and published entirely by one individual. This article situates Fenster’s initiative within the genre of the yizkor book and commemorative practices in the immediate postwar period more broadly. I argue that Fenster’s volume is not only a memorial tombstone (matseyve) for the murdered artists; it also offers a “window” (a fenster) into an entire generation of Jewish artists lost to art history, illuminating their lives through not only portraits, critical reviews and reproductions of works of art but also anecdotal information based on the recollections of friends and family who survived. Whereas Holocaust scholars have generally resisted using yizkor books as historical documents, this article suggests important ways Our Martyred Artists opens up new frames for art historical inquiry.

      Au début du XXe siècle et jusque dans les années 1950, Paris, capitale de l’art, incarna le lieu de la création mondiale. De nombreux artistes et hommes de lettres vinrent se former, créer et se confronter à la capitale française.
Toutefois, la Seconde Guerre mondiale mit un terme à ces voyages artistiques et littéraires de plus ou moins longues durées. En outre, les mesures raciales antisémites prises par l’occupant nazi et la France du Maréchal Pétain s’intensifièrent, empêchant les artistes d’exposer et de vendre.

      Après le conflit mondial, ce fut la découverte de la Shoah et de l’horreur humaine. Dans une logique de reconstruction, l’époque délicate qu’incarna l’après-guerre, fut marquée par l’arrivée d’étrangers. Parmi ceux-ci, sept jeunes femmes artistes venues de la Palestine mandataire, puis du tout jeune État, Israël, et de la Hollande.
Leur fascination pour Paris apparaît ambivalente et paradoxale. D’une part, « la ville Lumière » perdit de son aura avec l’avènement de l’art abstrait et le déplacement de la capitale artistique de Paris à New York. D’autre part, le rôle collaborationniste que la France joua, au début des années 1940, entacha l’image de la capitale internationale des arts. Or, en Palestine, puis en Israël, Gabriel Talpir, avec sa revue Gazith, servit de passerelles entre les artistes juifs de Palestine puis d’Israël, diffusant une image idéalisée des artistes de l’École de Paris et suscitant le désir, chez les premiers, de se rendre à Paris. Puis, au cours des années 1950 et 1960, les relations franco-israéliennes correspondirent à une période d’« âge d’or ».

      Ces sept femmes débarquèrent à Paris dans des conditions socio-économiques, des statuts personnels (célibataire, mariée, divorcée, avec ou sans enfants) et avec des niveaux d’études divers et variés (formations supérieures dans leurs pays d’origine ou à l’étranger ou bien sans) ; sans oublier des réseaux sociaux plus ou moins bien développés - galeristes, photographes, collectionneurs -, qui contribuèrent à la diffusion et à leur reconnaissance. De surcroît, ces femmes s’inscrivent dans une logique complexe ; à savoir une redéfinition sociétale avec d’importants mouvements migratoires en France, leur place en tant que femmes et étrangères avec les évolutions et bouleversements qui rythmèrent le pays, sans oublier leur conception ou l’idée qu’elles se firent de leur carrière artistique et la place qu’elle accordèrent à leur judéité.
Si ces femmes se réunirent autour de nombreux points communs - les lieux de formation, les enseignants, les photographes, les galeristes, les critiques d’art, les cercles de sociabilité comme les cafés - ; il eut cependant des dissemblances sociétales et culturelles (milieu d’origine, niveau de formation, façon de s’exprimer artistiquement, situations personnelles et durée de séjour à Paris).

La Maternité de 1914 est la première des vingt-quatre sculptures (1888-1968) réalise sur le thème de la Mère à l'Enfant.
Ce motif, qui résonne avec l'art chrétien, est repris par les artistes juifs en tant que symbole de la "renaissance juive".

Depuis la thèse de Germaine Coutard-Salmon, soutenue en 1980 et consacrée à l'étude monographique de Chana Orloff (1888-1968), peu de travaux ont porté sur cette artiste. Cette thèse se propose donc de mettre en perspective l'œuvre sculpté et l'œuvre graphique (dessins, gravures et illustrations) de l'artiste, de 1910 à sa mort, exécutés entre Paris et Israël. L'étude privilégiera les sujets, les techniques, les supports, mais aussi les orientations esthétiques qui parcourent l'oeuvre et l'inscrivent dans l'histoire et dans l'histoire de l'art Commencée à Paris sous les auspices d'un héritage cubiste et d'une tentation Art déco, son œuvre - où abondent les portraits, les Maternités et les sujets animaliers - , développe une esthétique reposant sur la simplification des formes, leur apurement et leur étirement et sur des compositions frontales traversées par une ambition décorative, qu'on a rapproché tour à tour de Modigliani, d'Archipenko ou de Nadelman. Puis, à partir de la fin de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale et au moment de la création de l'Etat d'Israël, son art devient plus tourmenté et plus expressif. C'est aussi le moment où lui sont confiées, par l'Etat juif, d'importantes commandes monumentales. D'un point de vue méthodologique, la thèse s'appuiera notamment, mais non exclusivement, sur l'exploitation scientifique des fonds conservés à ce jour d'œuvres et de documents issus de l'atelier de l'artiste et interrogera la réception critique de l'œuvre de Chana Orloff à partir des années 1920, ainsi que les conditions de sa diffusion internationale (les galeristes, les marchands, les collectionneurs...) dans la perspective d'une histoire culturelle, sociale et politique de l'art.

La Maison d’Editions Verve a été fondée par le critique d’art et éditeur grec, Tériade (1897-1983), avec le financement de David Smart, directeur de la corporation américaine Esquire-Coronet Inc (1937-1939). Verve a acquis une solide réputation internationale, au cours des trente-six ans d’activité, tout en poursuivant des résultats de haute qualité pour la reproduction en couleurs des œuvres d’art à travers la publication de la revue artistique et littéraire Verve (1937-1960) et la série de vingt-sept livres de peintres (1943-1975) illustrés par l’élite des artistes contemporains. La thèse présente l’activité d’éditeur et de critique d’art de Tériade (Cahiers d’Art, l’Intransigeant, Minotaure, La Bête Noire) à partir du moment de son arrivée à Paris en 1916 jusqu’en 1973, quand l’exposition Hommage à Tériade a eu lieu aux Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais à Paris, en mettant en lumière des aspects inconnus de la vie et l’œuvre de cet éditeur à travers la contextualisation de plus de 200 documents inédits et l’analyse d’un demi siècle de vie artistique en France ; de la fin du cubisme au triomphe de l’école de New York. Le deuxième volume de la thèse présente un répertoire complet de plus de 300 textes critiques de Tériade, une liste de ses publications, un index complet des textes et des illustrations de la revue Verve, photographies, images d’archives et 55 notices biographiques.

É liane Amado Levy-Valensi n'est pas à présenter sur la scène intel-lectuelle juive française. Sa biographie, son oeuvre et sa venue en Israël en 1968 sont bien connus et font partie de l'épisode qui clôt une période de l'École de Paris. Son arrivée en Israël a eu une résonance particulière sur le judaïsme français et il eut été raisonnable de penser qu'elle génère une dynamique particulière sur le judaïsme israélien. Tant son génie que son parcours personnel, philosophe, psychanalyste, femme, figure de proue du judaïsme français d'après-guerre, tout cela aurait dû susciter des émules et engendrer des cercles d'études autour de sa personnalité et de son oeuvre. Rien de vraiment significatif ne s'est vraiment passé. Non qu'elle ait été totalement méconnue ; il suffit de citer un de ses principaux élèves israéliens, le professeur Avi Sagi, qui compare sa décision de s'installer en Israël à « l'installation d'Albert Einstein dans un laboratoire perdu au bout du monde » 1. Elle a eu une influence certaine sur un cercle d'élèves dans le cadre de son enseignement au sein du département de philosophie à l'université Bar Ilan et y a été appréciée à sa juste valeur. Mais il est tout de même surprenant qu'une intellectuelle juive française marquante comptant à son crédit une oeuvre littéraire riche de vingt-deux ouvrages et plus de cent vingt articles passe quasiment inaperçue en Israël, alors qu'elle fait partie dès son arrivée de l'establishment universitaire 2. Le monde israélien ignorant totalement la réalité et le concept d'intellectuel non affilié à l'institution universitaire, et n'accordant de légitimité qu'à des

Modigliani at the Cité Falguière: The first phase of his sculpture in its immediate context.
Modigliani embarked on sculpture in an unusual environment – the studios at 14, Cité Falguière in Paris – whose actual physical and social aspects are examined here. The story of Modigliani's various places of residence has been neglected to date, and yet useful information concerning the chronology of his sculpture can be gleaned from the places where the artist lived and the testimonies of his neighbours. The still controversial dating of some works, including the stone caryatid at the MoMA in New York, can thus be firmly established. The article also shows, through drawings, how his transition to sculpture developed; it traces the guiding principles of his graphic production in 1910 – a year that seems to have disappeared from critical studies – and it is on these that the identification of Modigliani's first sculpture is based.

Modigliani à la Cité Falguière: la première étape de la sculpture dans son contexte immédiat.
Modigliani a entrepris la pratique de la sculpture dans un décors particulier – l'ensemble d'ateliers du 14 de Cité Falguière à Paris – dont on se propose d'analyser ici les aspects aussi bien matériels que sociaux. L'histoire résidentielle de Modigliani a jusqu'à présent été négligée; pourtant, les lieux où a vécu l'artiste et les témoignages de ses voisins permettent d'obtenir des informations utiles pour la chronologie de la sculpture. La datation, jusqu'ici controversée, de certaines œuvres, parmi lesquelles la caryatide en pierre conservée au MoMA à New York, trouve ainsi un fondement solide. L'article montre également, à travers les dessins, la manière de laquelle s'est développée la transition vers la sculpture; y sont individués les principes-guide de la production graphique de 1910 – année qui semble 'évaporée' des études – sur lesquels s'appuie à notre sens l'identification de la première sculpture réalisée par Modigliani.

REPERCUSSIONS OF THE FIRST EXHIBITION OF THE PARIS GROUP OF POLISH ARTISTS (GRUPA PARYSKA PLASTYKÓW POLSKICH) IN 1935.
In the first part of this article, I am focussing on an artistic scandal which took place in 1935 in Paris. Polish sculptor Leopold Kretz was accused by his fellow artists of committing plagiarism. This accusation led to a division of a newly created society of Polish artists in two separate groups. Those who were convinced of Kretz’s “guilt” where gathered by another sculptor, François Black. In the second part of my article, I am trying to describe Black’s œuvre and comprehend his position in the controversy mentioned above. This work is based mainly on a research which I carried out in June 2016 in the Musée de Saint-Maur-des-Fossés – Villa Médicis near Paris.

Il rapporto tra la semiotica di Hjelmslev e quella dell’École de Paris è il tema centrale di questa riflessione. È noto che i lavori del linguista danese hanno contribuito in maniera determinante alla formulazione della teoria greimasiana come alle sue evoluzioni più recenti.
Un primo bilancio di questi rapporti era stato realizzato nel 1986 in una conversazione con A. J. Greimas. Trent’anni dopo quell’intervista, attraverso una ricostruzione concettuale dei lasciati, il saggio traccia un quadro più completo degli apporti della teoria di Hjelmslev agli sviluppi della semiotica francese. L’articolo si interroga sulla definizione di semiotica a partire dalla proposta avanzata nei Fondamenti e ripresa da Greimas e Courtés nel primo volume del Dizionario, dove la semiotica è definita come una “gerarchia di relazioni”. Questa scelta, determinata dalla svolta logica dei primi anni ‘40, giustifica la scomparsa nella sua opera più conosciuta dei precedenti modelli non gerarchici  e delle opposizioni partecipative, stimolando la ricerca di una definizione alternativa più vicina a una semiotica del continuo. Attraverso la ricostruzione del destino editoriale del saggio “Struttura generale delle correlazioni linguistiche” [1933] – come delle conferenze tenute da Hjelmslev nel Texas [1961] – sono ripercorse le esitazioni dell’autore danese sul ruolo delle opposizioni partecipative nei lavori destinati alla pubblicazione. Una definizione alternativa di semiotica si fa strada attraverso l’archeologia degli scritti secondari: al modello  gerarchico jakobsoniano, fondato sulle opposizioni privative per contraddittori e qualitative per contrari, il saggio del 1933 contrappone le opposizioni partecipative dei modelli a rete. Una posizione più sfumata sarà ribadita, due anni dopo, ne La categoria dei casi (1935), dove il pensiero logico per opposizioni privative e quello prelogico retto dalle opposizioni partecipative  saranno riuniti per costituire il sistema sub-logico. Il presente articolo, più vicino alle posizioni del saggio del 1935, si conclude proponendo una definizione di semiotica in grado di conciliare i modelli discontinui a gerarchia con i modelli continui a rete. Questa definizione, capace di rendere conto della relazione stessa dell’umano all’animale, pemette di pensare la partecipazione della semiotica antropologica alla semiotica del vivente.

Ce mémoire de master 2 fait suite à un premier travail de Master 1, consacré à l’exposition Art sénégalais d’aujourd’hui, tenue en 1974 au Grand Palais à Paris. 
Ce mémoire retrace et analyse les échanges culturels entre la France et le Sénégal dans le contexte de la décolonisation et de la coopération. Un échange d’oeuvres d’art opéré dans les années 1960, témoigne ainsi à la fois des négociations entreprises par le Sénégal pour exister sur la scène artistique internationale et décentrer un monde politique et artistique organisé autour de l’Occident (chapitre 1). Ce mémoire se concentre plus particulièrement sur les expositions tenues à Dakar sous la présidence de Léopold Sédar Senghor (1960-1980). J’y explore plusieurs lieux d’exposition à Dakar, comme le Centre culturel français qui organisait alors de nombreuses expositions didactiques. Le Musée dynamique, inauguré dans le cadre du premier festival mondial des arts nègres, avait d’abord accueilli des expositions historiques (Témoins des temps passés, Fresques du Tassili) (chapitre 1). Les années 1970 marquent un tournant dans cette politique d’exposition. Senghor, souhaitait organiser des expositions d’artistes français modernes. Secondé dans cette entreprise par le conseiller culturel français Gérard Bosio, Dakar ambitionnait de recevoir de grands artistes et avait choisi les artistes « officiels » de la France : Chagall, Picasso, Soulages (suivis d’Alfred Manessier et André Masson). Senghor accompagnait ces expositions de discours d’inauguration, de colloques internationaux, cherchant ainsi à créer l’évènement et à négocier avec la France sur le terrain des arts, poursuivant toujours le but de voir advenir la Civilisation de l’Universel et un monde nouveau (chapitre 2).

Le parcours personnel et artistique d'André Claudot (1892-1982) se confond avec l'histoire du XX e siècle, à travers des oeuvres influencées par le fauvisme, l'expressionnisme et la caricature.

Anarchiste avant 1914, caricaturiste pacifiste et antimilitariste après la guerre, socialiste vingt ans plus tard, antifasciste et résistant, puis communiste, il participe très tôt aux groupes d'artistes engagés de l'école de Paris et son empreinte sur toute une génération d'artistes à Pékin et Hangzhou est indéniable.
Si son travail à l'encre est fondamental, c'est la couleur qui dirige sa peinture, ses paysages comme ses portraits et scènes de genre, que ce soit à Paris, en Chine, en Bourgogne.
Richement illustrée, cette première monographie donne à explorer et à comprendre l'homme tout autant que l'artiste, ses engagements et ses oeuvres.
Enrichie par trois essais écrits par les deux codirectrices du catalogue (Rachel Mazuy et Jessica Watson et ), ainsi que par Philippe Cinquini et Bertrand Tillier,  cette première monographie scientifique comporte en outre un important abécédaire, une chronologie et un index, en plus du catalogue des oeuvres de l'exposition André Claudot La couleur et le siècle (Musée des Beaux-arts de Dijon du 25 juin au 20 septembre 2021).

Throughout the early twentieth century, Paris enjoyed an unrivaled cultural hegemony, attracting artists worldwide. While some may have been obliged to leave their places of birth because of pressing sociopolitical or economic factors, the choice of Paris for many was motivated by artistic pursuits. The creative practice of foreign-born artists working in the city in the first half of the twentieth century represents an artistic corpus through which we might study (voluntary) migration as a collective artistic experience, with rich examples of the ways in which artists drew on the visual culture of their new home while dwelling upon their respective national and ethnic origins. The reaction of artists to their new environment is, however, but one part of the process engendered by migration. In the reception offered to artists by their adopted home and audience, there is equally evident a negotiation through which the work of migrants is alternately included in and excluded from the predominant cultural realm. The objective of this paper is thus twofold: to nominate specific examples of the idioms which artists from diverse backgrounds developed in response to their experiences in Paris; and to offer a brief comparative analysis of the way in which their work was subsequently received within the critical and institutional networks which had emerged in the late nineteenth century, and which continued to evolve throughout the interwar period.

Over 75 years since the Holocaust, scholarship has still not adequately studied the countless persecuted and murdered Jewish artists working in France before the war. Most have eluded close critical or academic attention. This article discusses one Jewish woman artist working in Paris. Her name was Nathalie Kraemer, and until now there were few details about her life other than that she was born in Paris in 1891, wrote poetry and died in Auschwitz in 1943. Kraemer was “discovered” and pulled from obscurity by a private collector named Oscar Ghez who purchased her paintings in 1973, but they have remained, for the most part, out of public view. Her story highlights how incomplete mainstream accounts of modernism are and how badly the canon of “Holocaust art” needs to be expanded. Based on new research in the archives, this richly illustrated article fleshes out her life and career.

Hans Hartung (1904-1989) is regarded as one of the founders of gestural painting in Europe, a variety of expressive or lyrical abstraction, the first truly ‘international style’ to dominate art on both sides of the Atlantic in the mid-twentieth century. The adjectives ‘lyrical’ or ‘expressive’ suggest a direct, almost physical painterly approach to material, canvas and form. However, the process of organizing the studio inventory after the artist’s death revealed that for every painting, seemingly the result of a largely expressionistic and uncontrolled working  process, there was a preparatory drawing, patently contradicting the superficial appearance of the painting and the ‘expressionistic’ or ‘lyrical’ clichés attached to it. The contradiction between the stereotypes dominating the discourse and the reality behind them was known to critics of the 1950, but they wouldn’t bother about drawing the inevitable conclusion that their discourse was wrong and misleading. Even when the evidence again turned up after the artist’s death, a well-known gallery advised the foundation representing the artist’s estate to destroy the evidence in order to protect the artist’s market.
This text focuses on this strange and still not well-known aspect of the artist’s reception as a case study for art criticism’s notorious tendency to base its discourse on misleading stereotypes. It was written for the compilation Hartung – 10 Perspectives, edited by Anne Pontégnie and published by 5 Continents Editions srl. Milan in 2006.

Catalogue essay in English and Hebrew on Eretz-Israeli and Israeli Artists impacted by Chaïm Soutine from the 1930s to contemporary and emerging artists and the artist himself, culled from original artist statements and based on new research. Exhibition at the Mishkan Museum of Art Ein Harod, Israel (9 November 2019 - 18 April 2020), with about 20 paintings by Soutine and some 100 artworks by about 45 Israeli artists. Entre junio de 1949 y agosto de 1950 circuló por diversos países de América Latina la exposición de pintura francesa contemporánea "De Manet a nuestros días". La muestra, organizada por el gobierno de Francia, se enmarcaba en un proyecto de recuperación de la hegemonía cultural parisina, posición que había sido hábilmente arrebatada por Nueva York durante la década del cuarenta. Este artículo detalla las complejas gestiones que permitieron la llegada de la exposición al continente americano, así como las premisas estético-políticas que la motivaron, para luego enfocarse en la recepción crítica que la muestra tuvo en algunas de sus locaciones. Siguiendo una metodología comparativa, se propone calibrar el estado de los sistemas de arte re-gionales hacia 1950, para comprender cuáles fueron los efectos que tuvo la exposición en las discusiones estéticas y teóricas que marcaban entonces la fisonomía de la crítica de arte sudamericana.

Pojava umetnika jevrejskog porekla u prvoj polovini 19. veka uslovljena je s jedne strane pokretom prosvetiteljstva u državama u kojima žive; s druge strane procesom prosvetiteljstva medju samim Jevrejima (Haskala). Želja za emancipacijom i borba za jednaka prava potiču kod Jevreja u tom period razvoj nacionalnih identiteta i osećaj pripadanja narodu (nemačkom, poljskom, ruskom…) u čijoj sredini zive, ali istovremeno, naročito u trenucima netrpeljivosti tih istih naroda prema Jevrejima, pobudjuje se želja za preispitivanjem vlastitog, jevrejskog identiteta. Takva dualnost se ispoljava u radovima niza umetnika aktivnih u periodu 19. i prvoj polovini 20. veka. U toku četiri predavanja, uz pomoć autoportreta Moritza Oppenheima (1800-1882); Mauriciya Gottlieba (1856-1879); Marca Chagalla (1887-1985) i Felixa Nussbauma (1904-1944), pokusaćemo razumeti na koji način taj konflikt, dalje komplikovan željom za pripadanjem univerzalnoj sferi Umetnosti, dobiva vizualna rešenja, dodatno uslovljena prostorom i periodom u kojima umetnik stvara.

The article examines the formation of the creative method of Francis Gruber in the framework of the development of figurative French art of the 1930–1940s. Through the analysis of the works of Gruber, his theoretical statements and through the comparison with the works and ideas of his contemporaries, such as A.Giacommetti, A.Fougeron, Balthus, B.Taslitsky, the author seeks to define the artist’s place in the history of art. The principles developed by Gruber and his creative method formed the basis of such an artistic language as miserabilism and created the conditions for the development of a new generation of figurative artists.

В статье рассматривается сложение творческого метода Франсиса Грюбера в рамках развития фигуративного французского искусства 1930–1940-х гг. Анализ произведений Грюбера, его теоретических высказываний, сопоставление с работами и идеями современников – А. Джакомметти, А. Фужерон, Бальтюс, Б. Таслицкий – позволяет определить место художника в истории искусств. Разработанные Грюбером принципы и его творческий метод легли в основу такого художественного языка, как мизерабилизм и создали условия для формирования нового поколения фигуративных художников.

This paper analyses the reception of the researches of the “Paris school” in the context of the German “Klassiche Archäologie” which, more or less at the same moment, was also entering a period of renewal aiming at a conjunction of history and archaeology. Despite the initial enthusiasm, this reception was only partial. Indeed, the rethinking of the classical disciplines in France and Germany took diverging roads because of both the different respective traditions under discussion and their different goals. One can identify four major differences between the two projects: (1) the “Greek art” pays a much more dominant part in the “Klassiche Archäologie” than in the Greek archaeology in France; (2) Greek religion is at the heart of the anthropological approach of the “Paris school” while it is marginalized in the German classical archaeology; (3) political history is essential to the conjunction of history and archaeology in Germany, while the “Paris school” conceptualizes history in a different way, overlooking factual history and micro-chronology; (4) the utopian dimension of the Greek past, that the “Klassiche Archäologie” rejected though it was deeply rooted in his own tradition, while some kind of utopia was still operating in the “Paris school” whose researches put the emphasis on the alterity of a premodern society, freed from any normative value for the present time, and functioning rather as a critical discourse addressing the contemporary culture.

The Norwegian-born French painter Anna-Eva Bergman (1909-1987) was a multifarious artist. Prior to the 1950s she drew illustrations and caricatures for the press, kept notebooks on her ideas about art, published articles, wrote an autobiography, a novel and a cookery book. At the same time, she explored the realm of painting, embarking down the path of abstraction since the early 1950s and ultimately forging a unique style using gold and silver foil as pictorial elements and archetypical forms derived from nature or based on Nordic mythology.
This text focuses on the theoretical foundations of and her artistic evolution towards abstraction linking both to several decisive biographical events. It was originally written for the monograph Anna-Eva Bergman published in 2011 by the Fondation Hans Hartung / Anna-Eva Bergman and Les presses du reel.

From the Sublime to the Spectral – Lyotard/Deleuze - an approach of the art of István Farkas, a painter from the School of Paris. His spectral painting is a symbolic extirpation of the bourgeoisie, of the illusion of embourgeoisement, and also a self-extirpation, a withdrawal to a radical figurativeness that is devoid of sensory organs and transparent in the literal sense, in which the outlines of the living allow us to see through them into their surroundings, their past, their mortality. "Facing catastrophe" also alludes to the fact that from the 1930s onwards, Farkas, driven by some strange foreboding, cast his gaze almost exclusively on a single motif, as though awestruck, dumbfounded, mesmerised: on human nature, like the head of a gorgon, from which we must escape, anywhere, leaving behind the planet, our home, our body – and this spellbound gaze, cast self-reflectively back upon ourselves, has never been more relevant than it is today. István Farkas, scion of a prominent and wealthy Hungarian Jewish patrician family, son of the publisher József Wolfner, became a valued member of the „École de Paris”, exhibiting alongside such artists as Matisse, Giacometti and Delaunay, he moved in the same circles as Segonzac, Gleizes and Kisling, and his art was lauded by writers such as Paul Dermée, Pierre Flouquet, Guy de la Brosse and André Salmon. He died in Auschwitz, in 1944.

The expression "École de Paris" (School of Paris) was born in the visual arts community of the 1920s to designate foreign artists living in the French capital. Then applied to music, it was used to indicate realities as different as a group of immigrant composers in Paris in the inter-war period (C. Beck, T. Harsányi, B. Martinů, M. Mihalovici, A. Tansman and A. Cherepnine) and all composers of all periods who have lived at least part of their lives in the City of Light.
An investigation through the press, correspondence, radio broadcasts, scores and scholarly works reconstructs the origins, history and challenges of this versatile label (hence the plural of the title). A new look at the cosmopolitan reality of interwar Paris music is thus offered to the reader: xenophobia, internationalism, the defence of the "genius of race" and fascination for exoticism coexist in discourse and in practice. This book sheds light on the issues surrounding the place occupied by the works of foreign composers in Paris within "French" music, thus offering a new perspective on the history of immigration in France.
