Avallone G. & Torre S., Do migrations have an urban vocation yet? New trends in Italian urban settlements2012 •
"""Italian statisticians and demographers observed in XXth century that generally the trend to settle in the largest urban areas is leaded by individuals seeking to enhance their quality of life. Franco Alasia and Danilo Montaldi introduced in 1960 one of the first researches on Italian internal migrations recognizing that «migrations have an urban vocation». Researches made in other national contexts obtained the same conclusions. It is possible to conclude that migrations have an urban vocation in an increasing intensification period of industrialization. Industrial crisis that started in the second half of the 70's and the following changes of labour market have made less secure the correspondence between city and immigration. Since the 80's the trends of the territorial settlements started to change; while Italy was becoming an immigration country, the settlement processes become less predictable and counter-urbanization and urban diffusion phenomena began. In this deeply change, it is useful to highlight the new spatial distribution of immigrant population and which territorial areas have been most affected by their presence. Over the last two decades, between 1991 and 2010, this question has become particularly important in Italian case. We can assume that vocation of migration is still urban, but it is associated to the new socio-territorial configurations, as, for example, the periurban or neo-rural configurations, and to new processes of social segregation. The research tries to answer to this question."""

International audienceThis paper aims at analysing the causes of internal migrations in Italy that provoke population decline and shrinking in some areas of the country, with a particular regard to medium-sized cities that, despite being considered in many cases central places for accessing services provision, are experiencing phenomena of shrinking. These territories are characterised by a recent but strong process of demographic contraction, poor mobility and lack of services, yet these areas have historically made the country’s wealth and diversity. Contrasting and comparing different statistical data at national scale, this work projects to identify the emerging geographies of demographic loss in Italy, with particular reference to medium-sized cities. As matter of fact, observing these places and their populations allows us to grasp more radically the fragility linked to population shrinking in urban contexts, the reason behind it and the extent of the ongoing transformations.C...
Changing demographics and modified settlement patterns have reshaped the socio-economic context of Southern Europe in the turn of the century. Within this context, Italy has become one of the major European destinations for migrants, as their volume has more than tripled during the years 2000-2010. This paper analyzes the changing demography of (legal) migrants to Italy, as well as their settlement patterns and spatial distribution over time. Since the onset of the new millennium, immigrant populations in Southern Europe in general, and in Italy in particular, have been experiencing rapidly increasing volumes and rapidly changing demographics. The feminization of foreign population, its changing age structure and ethnic composition are some of the most striking features. Meanwhile, noteworthy changes have been registered in the spatial distribution of immigrants. Different ethnic groups follow different settlement patterns and register different levels of spatial dispersion. Though the migrant population in Italy remains more concentrated in the North, disparities between North-Center and South have decreased over the last decade. Analysis at a lower spatial level (NUTS III) shows a higher variability across time and counties, partly due to a changing ethnic composition and the increased numbers of immigrant population.

In recent decades Italy has been affected significantly by multiple, complex and varied migratory flows as a consequence of demographic and socio-economic changes in Italian society. The processes, driven by the country’s social conditions, have more or less over 20 years seen Italy change from a country of emigration into a destination country characterised by significant inflows. As a result of the economic crisis, recent years appear to show a resurgence of emigration, with numbers and conditions differing from the past. Immigration continues to be an integral part of the country’s social and demographic structure; indeed, it is the predominant factor in population growth today. To understand these dynamics, this article analyses historical official statistics taking a medium- to long-term perspective that also considers changes in migratory systems, especially in South Eastern Europe. For a better understanding of the phenomenon, we describe the Italian situation within the fram...
Italy is a country with a long history of emigration and a very short experience of immigration. The paper first surveys the Italian emigration pattern describing the characteristics of the Italian emigrants (age, sex, skill level), their area of origins and the directions of their movement. The determinants of the migration choice are then analyzed as well as the policies affecting the decision to migrate. The end of the first section provides an analysis of the emigration effects in the areas of origin, namely the positive effect of the remittances and the changes in the composition of the remaining population. The second section surveys the recent Italian immigration phenomenon with a description of the immigrant characteristics, such as area of origin, sex, age, and location in the country. Special attention has been given to the illegality issue because the majority of the immigrants became legal by applying for an amnesty. The determinants of the emigration in the country of origins and the effects in the destination close the picture. The conclusion provides a look at the future and the policy changes that should be adopted.

Italian immigration: the origins, nature and evolution of Italy’s migratory systems2004 •

Internal mobility in Italy, after periods of intense growth and stagnation with different directions and actors involved, showed a marked increase also thanks to the contribution of the foreigners residing in Italy. In the last years, in fact, international immigration seems to have affected greatly the nature and features of internal mobility. Between 1995 and 2010, the changes of residence between Italian municipalities increased of more than 20%. Simultaneously, the contribution of the foreign population to internal migrations reached the level of 17%. The increase of the number of foreign residents, their greater propensity to move within the country, and structural factors such as the greater incidence of foreigners within the younger age-groups, may only partly explain these changes. We use data from the population register on changes of residence, which allows the knowledge of individual movements and which is the source mostly used to study internal mobility. This work aims ...
