Abstract How far have changes in mobility practices transformed the relationship between people and territory, and altered urban rhythms? In which way can urban planners deal with these transformations? What are the new spaces and habits of people on the move? In answering these questions this article investigates some cases of highly mobile people in Italy, and tests an innovative research method based on the direct observation of people’s mobilities and their stories of this mobility. The article takes on a double perspective: on the one hand it tries to offer an overview of the Italian case, collecting general data about changes in the structure of society and mobility behaviours; on the other hand, it describes and maps in detail stories of highly mobile people, investigating mobility paths, the reason behind their choice and, finally, their consequences. The final results are expected to open up new lines of research in the design of mobility: first and foremost, a more holistic approach to mobility may help to better identify mobility demand and define mobility strategies on a territorial level; secondly, the use of a sensitive approach to mobility analysis, one that considers the feelings and perceptions of mobile people, may bring about a more conscious and performing design of mobility spaces and services.

Book Description This book explores how emerging mobility practices have transformed spaces in order to fit the needs of highly mobile people, as well as the changing relationship between people and territory. It establishes an interdisciplinary and a multiscalar approach to mobility analysis and mobility design through the application of a mobile method of research. Drawing on mobile people in Italy, the book highlights how influential movers appropriate and configure space for their own needs, centring their activities on continuous but distant places and configuring territories with uncertain and evolving limits. This change of perspective allows us to redefine the concept of mobility space, including all the spaces that support the development of emerging mobility practices. It also encourages new perspectives on the way in which the relationship between the individual and territory is evolving into a less sedentary way of inhabiting space. This book will be of interest to architects, urban scientists and sociologists, as well as postgraduate students who are interested in understanding how mobilities are transforming contemporary cities and territories.

This work aims to connect the new information technologies with the transformations they have triggered on physical environment. If from one side is possible to understand that new information technologies create several possibilities for social relations, and for the exchange of information and knowledge, from the other side, it is still difficult to recognize how these technologies are distributed in physical space and what are the influences that they have in our everyday life. One of the main difficulties to read ICT effects on the physical Word is that: as they are ephemeral and in many cases invisible, is not always possible to know their position in space and to map their presence. Many recent researches are focused on the understanding of this relation. A survey conducted on the State Library of Queensland’s by Dan Hill, for example, showed that the distribution of the WI-FI system inside the building influenced the localization of people. This is true both at the scale of the single building as well as at the city scale. Matthew Zook underlines that even if Internet is a horizontal network, it grows around some hubs. Zook’s work highlights that the most important hubs correspond to the Word Global Cities, suggesting that the development of new information technologies contributes to make those cities more competitive. These two examples demonstrate that the presence of ICT contributes to raise the concentration of people and business, intensifying networking capacity. It has become clear that ICT influenced our lifestyle, reducing the distances between people, increasing our capacity to make relations and, as a consequence, creating new possibilities and new reasons to live and to travel trough a wider territory. At the same time, people using ICT are sensors making possible to analyse the physical world and the on-going transformations. Going through some research projects that use innovative technologies to study urban space, we will understand the importance of this tool to comprehend the processes in act.

Sustainable urban planning refers to the implementation of urban project through land use models that empower the existing potentialities of the site. Sustainable urban projects should consider the growing expansion of urban peripheries towards rural areas, the high number of unused buildings, the degradation of some abandoned areas, the location of infrastructures, and the preservation and improvement of the system of urban green spaces. The project presented in this paper, winner at Europan 11 competition for the site of Sambreville (BE), was developed in 2011 by the teamwork composed of Giovanni Aurino, Danilo Capasso, Laura Falcone, Anna Sirica and Bruna Vendemmia. The project site is 5 ha large and is located in Sambreville, in the south of Belgium, in Wallonia. Despite its proximity to the city centre, it shows the typical features of leftover spaces and hasn’t been touched by urbanization yet. This is probably due to the presence of two elements that acted like barriers, sepa...

This paper based my research on the relation between the local and the global in the metropolitan region and tries to clarify, looking at the case of Naples, the consequences of regional strategies considering the unexpected effects of global choices on local city growth. In 2010 Naples lies on a huge conurbation: the high-way infrastructures reduced the distance, increasing the accessibility of the region but without building a clear relation with the surroundings; as a consequence the city sprawls messing up the previous rural structure. At the same time, the industrial areas produced visible fractures on the configuration of the territory.

This chapter aims to study some emerging mobility practices in Italy and the consequences they have had on the use and configuration of spaces. A growing number of people live their lives across a vast space consisting of work, family, and friendship networks, and are travelling longer distances, in shorter periods of time, than ever before. This paper addresses the hypothesis that those transformations are modifying the relationships between people and territory, allowing people to live simultaneous lives, and increasing relationships within multiple territories. I will use biographies of highly mobile people as a tool to describe this process. Describing and analysing their mobility behaviours allow to show how people try to “catch ubiquity and simultaneity” (Ascher in Cahiers internationaux de sociologie. PUF, Paris, p. 53, 2005) in their everyday lives, highlighting how far those practices have transformed the relation between people and territory and the spaces of mobility. The first results presented here consist on the identification of three territorial profiles based on the geography of personal relationships and revealing how this geography interacts with a general transformation of everyday urban rhythm in the construction of simultaneous lives.

International audienceThis paper aims at analysing the causes of internal migrations in Italy that provoke population decline and shrinking in some areas of the country, with a particular regard to medium-sized cities that, despite being considered in many cases central places for accessing services provision, are experiencing phenomena of shrinking. These territories are characterised by a recent but strong process of demographic contraction, poor mobility and lack of services, yet these areas have historically made the country’s wealth and diversity. Contrasting and comparing different statistical data at national scale, this work projects to identify the emerging geographies of demographic loss in Italy, with particular reference to medium-sized cities. As matter of fact, observing these places and their populations allows us to grasp more radically the fragility linked to population shrinking in urban contexts, the reason behind it and the extent of the ongoing transformations.C...

This lexicon aims at interpreting the concept of ‘Territorial Fragilities' toward different approaches. Abandonment, Accessibility, Adaptation, Connection, Housing, Landscape, Narrative, Peripheries, Policies, Prototyping, Regeneration, Segregation, Shrinkage and Welfare, are different points of view that open to design directions and strategies to work on territorial fragilities. Material and immaterial fragilities are linked to: lack, poorness or obsolescence of existing building and infrastructure, changes in social structure, emerging individual needs. After a theoretical introduction, the headwords will present different tactics that may lead to the construction of ‘thick description' as well as furnish guidelines for more effective design and policies to manage territorial fragilities.

The project site is 5 ha large and is located in Sambreville, in the south of Belgium, in a region called Wallonia. Despite its proximity to the city center, it shows the typical features of leftover spaces and hasn’t been touched by urbanization yet. This is probably due to the presence of two elements that acted like barriers, separating the site from its surroundings: the Sambre river and the railway.
The project main idea is the creation of a public riverside park, beginning in the site and extending northwestward, along the Sambre river. On a territorial scale, the park will be the framework of an integrated system including woods, wild green areas, leftover spaces and residential quarters; on an urban scale, it will be a major urban attractor and will facilitate the visual and functional connection between the two parts of the city. For this reason, the project title is “ville+Sambre+ville”.
