Fibrin Glue Prevents Complications of Septal Surgery: Findings in a Series of 100 Patients2003 •
Septal surgery is a common type of otolaryngology–head and neck surgery, and it is often performed in combination with other procedures. Complications of septal surgery include bleeding, hematoma, infection, abscess formation, and perforation. The most common methods of preventing these complications are the use of nasal packing, septal splints, and quilting sutures as a means of approximating the septal flaps. In this article, we describe our study of an alternate method: fibrin glue. We used fibrin glue as the sole method of approximating flaps on 100 consecutive septal surgery patients. Our results indicate that the use of fibrin glue is effective, rapid, comfortable, and inexpensive.

Use of Aerosolized Bovine-Prepared Fibrin Glue for Skin Fixation After Primary Open Rhinoplasty: A Prospective Randomized and Controlled Trial2006 •
Fibrin glue has been used in diverse areas of plastic surgery. To the authors' knowledge, no clinical controlled trial studies have reported its use for open rhinoplasty. A prospective, randomized, masked clinical trial was designed to demonstrate that aerosolized bovine-prepared fibrin glue used in open rhinoplasty controls skin fixation (flap movement), edema, hematomas, ecchymosis, bleeding, and cosmetic results 1 and 12 months postoperatively. The results were reviewed by two blinded plastic surgeons who assessed postoperative photographs using the Strasser score. Other items such as columella scar, pain, surgery/recovery time, and patient satisfaction also were evaluated. A computer system was used to randomize 22 consecutive open primary rhinoplasties. Cosmetic analysis did not differ significantly between the group redraped with fibrin glue and the control group. Patient satisfaction was the only outcome that significantly favored the active group. None of the other items or adverse events significantly differed between the two groups, including operative time and pain. Fibrin glue is believed to reduce bleeding and to improve the adherence of tissues. The only statistical difference in this study favored the patient satisfaction cosmetic score of the group that received fibrin glue.

Efficacy of Nasal Splints in Reducing the Incidence of Intranasal Adhesions Following Septoplasty2016 •
Objective: To determine the efficacy of nasal splints in preventing adhesion formation in patients undergoing septoplasty for deviated nasal septum (DNS). Study Design: Quasi experimental study. Place and Duration of Study: The study was carried out at ENT department, Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi from January 2010 to January 2011. Materials and Methods: Two hundred and sixty patients with DNS requiring septoplasty were included in this study. They were divided in two groups A and B with each group consisting of 130 patients. In group A splints were used postoperatively after septoplasty while in group B no splints were used. In group A nasal splints were removed on 14th postoperative day. All patients in group A and B were followed up regularly in OPD for six weeks for development of adhesions to determine efficacy of nasal splints in prevention of adhesions. Results: In group A average age was 29.13 years+10.11SD while it was 27.6 years+ 9.5SD in group B. Male to female ratio w...

ROLE OF INTRANASAL SPLINTS IN PREVENTING POSTOPERATIVE NASAL MUCOSAL ADHESIONS2018 •
ABSTRACT Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of intranasal splints in the prevention of nasal adhesion following septal surgery. Study Design: Randomized control trial. Place and Duration of Study: Ear, nose and throat (ENT) Department, Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Kharian, from Aug 2014 to Dec 2015. Material and Methods: Patients undergoing septal surgery fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected. All the patients were randomly allocated a group (A or B) by using the random numbers table. All surgeries were performed by consultant ENT surgeons under general anaesthesia. After septal surgery in group A, both the nostrils were packed with simple nasal packing using vaseline gauze packs. In group B, silastic nasal splint was placed on operated side only and both the nostrils were packed with vaseline gauze packs. Vaseline gauze nasal packs were removed 48 hrs postoperatively. Nasal splint was removed after seven days of surgery. Nasal cavities were inspected for adhesions after 2 weeks from the date of operation. For follow up sconac number of patients was recorded. Results: In our study, out of 234 cases (117 in each group), 57.26% (n=67) in group-A and 53.85% (n=63) in group-B were between 16-30 years of age while 42.74% (n=50) in group-A and 446.15% (n=54) in group-B were between 31-55 years of age, mean ± SD was calculated as 31.45 ± 6.41 and 30.57 ± 4.54 years in group-A and B respectively, 62.39% (n=73) in group-A and 68.38% (n=80) in group-B were male while 37.61% (n=44) in group-A and 31.62% (n=37) in group-B were females, comparison of the efficacy of intranasal splints in the prevention of nasal adhesion following septal surgery was recorded as 86.32% (n=101) in group-A and 96.58% (n=113) in group-B while remaining 13.68% (n=16) in group-A and 3.42% (n=4) developed nasal adhesion. A p-value was calculated as 0.000, showing a significant difference. Conclusion: We concluded that the frequency of efficacy of intranasal splints for the prevention of nasal adhesion following septal surgery is significantly higher when compared with nasal packing.
